PASTOR’S PAGE

Greetings all!

Here we are in February already. To me, February has always seemed like kind of a strange month. It’s after Christmas and New Year’s, but before the real onset of spring, and doesn’t seem to know how many days it truly has. Is it 28 or 29 days eve-ry four years? February, with the exception of Valentine’s Day, seemed like a pass through month where not much happened.

But then I think about February and realize, yes, Valentine’s Day is a big deal, and I have a wedding anniversary in February. And this year, on the 26th of February, we

encounter Ash Wednesday which, for us as Christians, symbolizes the beginning of the Lenten season as a time of reflection and self-awareness, all focused on the gift of Jesus Christ.

We know that Ash Wednesday is followed by six Sundays in Lent, then Maundy Thursday, followed by Good Friday, followed by Easter Sunday.

As a church congregation, we will serve at Second Harvest Food Bank on February 8th, celebrate and honor our Scouts (Cubs, Girls, and Boy Scouts) on Scouting Sun-day, February 9th, and gather at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 26th, for Ash

Wednesday worship in the Chapel.

As the waning winter days slowly lengthen, even with the gray skies that we know will hover over our area during February, I encourage you to be alert for opportunities to express your gratitude for the gift of salvation through Christ. Be mindful that there are many in our community who don’t know Christ, and your kind word, your listening ear, your spoken words of invitation to join you in worship, can make an

eternal difference in another’s life.

Enjoy the month of February, and let it be for you a time of service, celebration, wor-

ship, and drawing closer to Christ. Find the opportunities to share your faith. They are everywhere, even in a month like February.

Joyfully in Christ,

Pastor Jerry

A VIEW FROM THE PEW

February has much to offer. It gives us the opportuni-ty to celebrate many things including Ground Hog's Day, birthdays of American presidents, as well as the birthdays of friends and family members. For me, the most special day in February is Valentine's Day be-cause it is devoted to the celebration of love. Valentine's Day came about as European's chose mid-February as a time to commemorate love as evidenced by the beginning of the mating season of birds. Even today, this holiday is all about love notes, hearts, can-dy, and roses as we strive to let people who are special to us know that we love and cherish them. During this time of celebration, we should also be aware that there are some people who don't feel espe-cially loved or even lovable. They may not have a "special" person in their lives and therefore this holi-day can increase their sense of loneliness and sadness. This is when they need to be reminded that there is someone who always loves them unconditionally. We need to remember I John 3:1, “See what kind of love the Father has given to us that we should be called God’s children, and that is what we are!” (CEB) We need to know with certainty that God lavishes his love on us every day and in every moment. Paul states in Romans 8:38-39, “ I’m convinced that nothing can separate us from God’s love in Christ Jesus our Lord: not death or life, not angels or rulers, not present things or future things, not powers or height or depth, or any other thing that is created.” (CEB) It is therefore with the spirit of everlasting love that we enter into the celebrations during the month of February. We should never forget the words in John 3:16-17: “God so loved the world that he gave his on-ly Son, so that everyone who believes in him won’t perish but will have eternal life. God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” (CEB) As we continue through the New Year, may you al-ways feel God’s eternal love surrounding you with warmth. As one of my favorite Biblical passages from I Corinthians 13:11-15 states, “When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, reason like a child, think like a child. But now that I have become a man, I’ve put an end to childish things. Now we see a reflection in a mirror; then we will see face-to-face. Now I know partially, but then I will know completely in the same way that I have been completely known. Now faith, hope, and love remain—these three things—and the greatest of these is love.” (CEB) Dennis Henneman [email protected]

NEW BOOKS FOR THE 2020 UMW READING PROGRAM Check out some of the new exciting books for this year’s reading program. To participate, just read 5 books from the following categories—Spiritual Growth, Social Action, Leadership Development, Nurturing for Community, and Education for Mission. The following books are just a few from the 2020 UMW Reading Program. The reviews have been taken from the website. WHEN OTHERS SHUDDERED: EIGHT WOMEN WHO REFUSED TO GIVE UP by Jamie Janosz/ Moody Publishers (2014) EDUCATION FOR MISSION. Learn about eight women (Fanny Crosby, Mary McLeod Bethune, Nettie McCormick, Sarah Dunn Clarke, Emma Dryer, Virginia Asher, Evangeline Booth and Amanda Berry Smith) who were called to serve God and change the world. Their stories inspire us to follow God’s calling in our own lives and teach us that each individual person can make a difference. GOD UNBOUND: WISDOM FROM GALATIANS FOR THE ANXIOUS CHURCH By Elaine A. Heath/ Upper Room Books (2016) SPIRITUAL GROWTH. Just as Paul led the Galatians through a radical cultural change to expand their view of God, themselves, and the church’s mission, Christians are challenged to do the same today. Elaine Heath urges the church to boldly follow the Holy Spirit’s leadership beyond buildings and pro-grams and to join what Jesus is doing in the world. WRITINGS OF JOHN WESLEY/by Keith Beasley-Topliff, ed./ Upper Room Books (2017) SPIRITUAL GROWTH. The Upper Room Spiritual Classics series is a collection of authoritative texts on Christian spirituality by mystics, martyrs, and sages curated for the everyday reader. This volume presents excerpts from the hugely influential 18th-century preacher, writer, and founder of Methodism. It includes selections from Wesley’s journals, sermons and books, offering a clear picture of the spiritual vitality that ignited a movement and continues to transform lives.
