The Cardiovascular System
It can be compared to a railway system. A
railway system consists of a central
station, train cars and railway tracks.
![Page 5: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
The Cardiovascular System
The cardiovascular system consists of the heart, blood
and blood vessels.
![Page 6: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
The Cardiovascular System
The heart is like the central
station. It is responsible for circulation of
the blood.
![Page 7: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
The Cardiovascular System
The blood is like the train cars, which carries the cargoes of gases, nutrients,
and other substances in the body.
![Page 8: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
The Cardiovascular System
The blood vessels act
like the railway tracks. They
carry the blood to the different
parts of the body.
![Page 9: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
The Cardiovascular SystemThe word circulate means “to move about.”
Circulation – pumping of blood through the entire body by the heart.
![Page 10: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
The Cardiovascular System (cont
• The Heart– It consists of four chambers.
![Page 11: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
The Cardiovascular System (cont
• The Heart
• The left and right atria are collecting chambers. They receive the blood and hold the blood until it can enter the ventricles.
![Page 12: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
The Cardiovascular System (cont
• The Heart
• The atria are thin-walled while ventricles are thick walled.
![Page 13: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
The Cardiovascular System (cont
• The Heart
The ventricles are pumping chambers. They pump the blood out of the heart and cause the blood to move around the body
![Page 14: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
The Cardiovascular System (cont
• The Heart
How does the heart pump blood?
The heart muscles squeeze together and push out blood from
inside.
![Page 15: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
The Cardiovascular System (cont
• The Heart
–Your heart is sort of like a pump, or two pumps in one. The right side of your heart receives blood from the
body and pumps it to the lungs. The left side of the heart does the exact opposite: It receives blood from the lungs and pumps it out to the body.
![Page 16: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
The Cardiovascular System (cont
• The Heart
–The blood enters into the Right Atrium (RA) and goes to the Right Ventricle (RV) then exits into the lungs where it exchanges carbon
dioxide load for oxygen.
![Page 17: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
The Cardiovascular System (cont
• The Heart
–This oxygenated blood goes back to the heart through the Left Atrium
(LA) then it goes to the Left Ventricle (LV).
![Page 18: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
The Cardiovascular System (cont
• The Heart– Blood flows through the heart in one
direction.– Valves control the blood flow.– The cardiac conduction system controls
the electrical impulses that cause the heart to contract.
![Page 19: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
The Cardiovascular System (cont
• The Heart
The heart contains two types of valves.
The tricuspid valve separates the right atrium from the right ventricle, and the bicuspid valve separates the left atrium and the left ventricle
![Page 20: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
The Cardiovascular System (cont
• The Heart
The heart contains two types of valves.
The tricuspid and bicuspid valves ensure the blood flows from the atria to the ventricles.
![Page 21: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
The Cardiovascular System (cont
• The Heart
The heart contains two types of valves.
The other valves are the semilunar valves. They open and permit the entry of blood when ventricles contract.
![Page 22: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)

The Cardiovascular SystemThe blood vessels
3. The two largest veins are the superior and inferior vena cavae. The terms superior and inferior do not mean that one vein is better than the other, but that they are located above (superior) and below (inferior) the heart.
![Page 29: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
The Cardiovascular SystemThe blood vessels superior vena cavae- It carries deoxygenated blood from the upper half of the body to the heart'sright atrium.
![Page 30: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
The Cardiovascular SystemThe blood vessels De-oxygenated blood means most of the oxygen has been removed by tissues and the blood is darker.
![Page 31: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
The Cardiovascular SystemThe blood vessels The inferior vena cava is a vein that carries blood from the lower body to the heart. This vein carries de-oxygenated blood.
![Page 32: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
The Cardiovascular SystemThe blood vessels
A network of tiny capillaries connects the
arteries and veins.
![Page 33: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
The Cardiovascular SystemThe blood vessels Even though they're tiny, the capillaries are one of the most important parts of the circulatory system because it is through them that nutrients and oxygen are delivered to the cells.
![Page 34: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
The Cardiovascular SystemThe blood vessels In addition, waste products such as carbon dioxide are also removed by the capillaries.

The Cardiovascular System (cont.)
• Blood Types– Common blood types are O, A, B, and
AB.– Rh-factor is a type of antigen that
causes the body to produce antibodies.
• Rh+ means the Rh factor is present.• Rh– means the Rh factor is not
present.

What the Heart & Circulatory System Do?
• The circulatory system works closely with other systems in our bodies. It supplies oxygen and nutrients to our bodies by working with the respiratory system. At the same time, the circulatory system helps carry waste and carbon dioxide out of the body.
![Page 41: The cardiovascular system for demo](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081400/554b5e89b4c905793d8b510b/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)

Students are put in small groups of three or four and are asked to make a life-size drawing of the circulatory system. They trace a member of their group and use their book or the internet to draw the circulatory system, label the necessary parts, and color (unoxygenated blood blue, oxygenated blood red). They must have a title, group members names, and label the following: heart, lungs, vein, artery, brain, capillaries, right ventricle, left ventricle, right atrium, left atrium, and valves.
