Youth Ministry

SBC (New Site) YOUTH MINISTRY SPRINGS INTO ACTION TO SERVE THE MICAH COMMUNITY MEAL

Micah 6:8 teaches us "to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” This scripture is the inspiration for Fredericksburg's Micah Ecumenical Ministries. Since 2005, Micah Ministries and its partnering area churches have worked together to care for those in need in our community. One of Micah's programs provides meals and for almost 8 years, Shiloh New Site has opened our kitchen to host the Friday evening meal. Churches from the city of Fredericksburg and the surrounding counties come together and prepare meals for the Micah guests and any in the community desiring a meal. Usually on the first Friday of each month, Deacon Douglas “Sox” Richardson invites the ministries from New Site, to be responsible for hosting the meal. On Friday, April 6th, the Shiloh Youth Ministry planned, prepared and served the meal. The menu consisted of fried fish and chicken, corn, green beans, cornbread, coleslaw, assorted desserts and drinks (iced tea, hot coffee and water). As the meal coincided with our area schools Spring Break, we partnered with 220/2nd to None Track Team of Stafford, Virginia. Min. Donald Bryant, Bro. Don Brown and Dea. Sox ministered unto the guests with the Word of God prior to the meal, with some of the young men joining Dea. Sox in blessing the meal. The youth served the meals, fellowshipped and even stayed to clean up. It was truly a blessing to have the youth and some of their parents out for this community outreach event. Much thanks to 2nd to None and Track Team Chairman Micheal Lewis and Coach Jacinto Jones for partnering with us to man the fryers and supplying desserts and to Sis. Daisy Moorer, Culinary Arts Ministry, for directing the kitchen and keeping the pots hot. The Shiloh Baptist Church Youth Ministry looks forward to other opportunities to serve in the future. “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.“ John 13:35

This article was submitted by Deacon Anna Griffin, Youth Director, SBC(NS).

The Junior Missionary took charge of the 10 A.M. worship service on Sunday, April 29,

2018. The worship leader was Ahzadara Scott and the responsive reading was done by

Alexandra Njie. Our visitors received a warm and friendly welcome by Sean Britt, Charlotte

Holland, Alfonso Matthew and Micaela Trent. They were assisted by Nadya Britt. Aleyah

Coleman blessed the offering. What a pleasure it was to see our youth serving and

honoring the Lord! May God continue to bless the Junior Missionary Ministry.

“African Americans in Times of War”

Commander Arthur Wiggins, Jr., U.S. Navy, Chaplain Corps

BLACK HISTORY MONTH. Keynote Program. The annual theme for the 2018

Black History Month celebration was “African Americans in Times of War”. Based

on that theme, Shiloh New Site hosted its annual Black History keynote program on

Sunday, February 25, 2018. The keynote speaker was Commander Arthur

Wiggins, Jr., U.S. Navy, Chaplain Corps. Commander Arthur Wiggins delivered a

very personal and inspiring message on how God orchestrated his military life

through many challenges and also blessed him with great opportunities.

We continued our celebration with our “Soul Food” dinner in the Lower

Sanctuary, where we learned even more about our very own members who served

valiantly in Times of War. They graciously shared their uniforms, awards, and

regalia with us and gave detailed descriptions of their military memorabilia. All in

attendance gained a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the sacrifices African

Americans made (and continue to make) in Times of War.

One of our Associate Ministers, Donald Bryant, Sr., earned the Silver Star (the

third highest medal for valor in combat). In addition, Deacon Moses Brooks earned

the Bronze Star (the fourth highest medal for valor in combat). Therefore, Minister

Donald Bryant and Deacon Moses Brooks have demonstrated bravery and

courage above and beyond the call of duty in the face of enemy fire.

A few Diaconate members, namely Nathaniel Harley and Mary Tyson, rose to

the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the US Marine Corps and US Army, respectively.

In addition, Brother Arthur Patterson rose to the rank of “full-bird” Colonel in the

U.S. Air Force and Brother James L. Greene rose to the rank of “full-bird” Colonel

in the U.S. Army. Therefore, all four of these individuals were high-ranking field-

grade officers in their respective branches of the service.

Additionally, other church members served in various capacities in all branches

of the US military: Navy, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps. They

also shared their stories. What a blessing from God to have survived many

challenges and live to tell the stories! We are so grateful and thankful to God!

From the Library Shiloh Baptist Church Authors

We have had several authors among the current and past members of our congregation. For the next few newsletters, the library will be featuring them. Our first feature will be Deacon Nathaniel Harley, who wrote Strengthened By the Struggle in 2013. Shortly after he published his book, he was interviewed by the library staff. Here are excerpts from that interview.

1. How is it that you came to write this book?

It started years ago when I wrote a series of emails to deacons during our fasts. As I continued those emails over time, I realized God gave me material that should be shared with others outside of Shiloh. So, after praying about it, I expanded those emails into meditations for distribution to a larger audience. Initially, I wanted to do a blog but didn’t have the technical knowhow at that time. So, I published the meditations in a book. 2. What joys and challenges did you encounter/experience through this journey?

There were many joys and challenges, but I’ll highlight one of each. I am

especially grateful to have the support of my family, church family, and friends. Yet the greatest joy is getting encouraging feedback from people I don’t know. It is exciting to hear how the book, or the blog has impacted people in a positive way. That’s when I can see this has been worth the effort.

The greatest challenge was overcoming my own doubts. An author subjects himself to public scrutiny and criticism, and I wasn’t sure I was ready for the criticism that comes with publishing a book. After one editorial review, I literally threw the

manuscript in the trash. My wife had to remind me to do what God said do and leave the rest to Him as to whether the book was accepted or not. 3. What have you learned about yourself through this experience?

First, I discovered strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes I didn’t know

were there. For example, I like the actual writing process; thinking through an idea and exploring how to convey that idea in writing. But I found I don’t like marketing and selling a book after it is written; that’s just not something I do well. Second, I discovered writing is therapeutic for me. I wouldn’t classify myself as a good writer, but I enjoy writing as my personal healing mechanism. Third, I learned that my writing style evolved over time. I am a different writer now than when the book was published. I read the book and see how I could’ve been more concise in my language. Finally, I discovered personally what I have known mentally; God can use anyone to do anything He wants done. Despite my imperfections, God could use even me to do His work. That is encouraging. 4. Other than the messages we get from the devotions, what message do you have for your readers?

Life experiences over the years, good and bad, proved to be an inspiration for the book. But my Shiloh experience was the key inspiration; that’s what brought it all together and became the trigger for me actually writing. The book and the blog are proof that Romans 8:28 is a powerfully true and relevant scripture—ALL THINGS worked and continue to work together for the good. 5. There are others who say, I want to write a book. What advice do you have for them?

I give them four points that worked for me: 1) Have a note taking system to record every thought that comes to mind as soon as it comes to mind. Don’t try to organize the flow; the organization comes later. 2) Be patient. Wait for the inspiration before you try to write anything. 3) Use a professional editor (or two) who will challenge your writing style, logic and research. 4) Proofread, proofread, then proofread again; a lesson I learned the hard way. As the author, you have final responsibility for what is put on paper.

6. You are working on a second book. What will it be?

I started on a second book with intentions of publishing it by the end of 2015. Midway through, I stopped to focus on developing the blog I originally wanted to do. Right now, I am writing slowly, still trying to determine whether a second book will be of similar format to the first book, or something different. I haven’t gotten an answer on that yet. 7. What is next for you? Same as #6 above.

Page 9: THE CAPSTONE E-NEWSLETTER SHILOH BAPTIST ......Shiloh New Site hosted its 2018 Spring Revival on Monday, April 16 through Wednesday, April 18. Our guest minister was Reverend Dr. Harold

8. What was/is your writing process like? Any special way, time, location, etc. that you write?

Sometimes the idea comes from a scripture I hear or read. Other times it is something I experience firsthand, and then I search for a scripture that helps deal with the situation. I take notes on my phone, so I can write down an inspiration any time. Once I get sufficient notes to justify the idea becoming a meditation, I put the notes in my working draft where I try to expand and better organize my thoughts. I have several topics going at the same time so for me, the process is very slow. I write in spurts. Between work and the realities of life in general, I may go days or weeks without writing. Then I get inspired and I will go days (and nights) nonstop. I write late at night or early morning when it is quiet. Typically, I write at my desk at home, but I have found the location isn’t as important as the need for quiet time alone. 9. How long did it take?

Because this started as a series of emails, and I never set out to write a book, it was a few years in the making. Once I decided to write a book, I still wrote in spurts and actually put the draft aside for a few months. Overall, I’d say it took about 18 months, off and on. 10. What has been the response of the blog?

Response to the weekly blog (Strengthened By This Week) has been very similar to the response to the book. Both have had pretty small, but relatively strong audiences so far. One difference, the blog has provided a broader audience platform. While most respondents to the blog make comments to me personally, I am revising the blog and website to encourage more online dialog.

Thank you, Deacon Harley, for the inspiration of the book and your weekly blog.

Stephen Ministry Recruits Participants for Fall 2018 Training Program

Much has happened since 2016 when two members were trained to lead the Shiloh Baptist Church Stephen Ministry. Nine trainees have completed the program and are actively involved in ministering to care receivers as Stephen Ministers. Additionally, two new leaders were trained in 2017 and are active on the leadership team. Truly, God is blessing and growing this ministry! There is a need for more Stephen Ministers to serve our congregation. Applications are now being accepted for the new class that will begin on September 8, 2018. Classes are held on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. Prayerfully ask God if this might be a ministry to which He is calling you? Plan to attend one of the Information Sessions that will be held on the second and fourth Saturdays in June and July in Building Three from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Feel free to ask any Stephen Minister or Stephen Leader for information or for a Stephen Minister Application. Information packets are available on the Stephen Ministry table in the vestibule and on the table located at the main entrance on the lower level. Contact Stephen Ministers: Deacons Sidney Hankerson (540-538-4829), LaZalia Richardson, and Jerdeline Swann; Ministers Nathaniel Hayes (540-295-5092) and Bernadine Parrish; Sisters Verlean Harley (540-720-1976), Colette McBeth (540-907-9791), Patricia Parker, and Cynthia Watkins (540-760-2695). Mother’s Day Poem

A Mother's Love

There are times when only a mother's love

Can understand our tears,

Can soothe our disappoints

And calm all of our fears.

There are times when only a mother's love

Can share the joy we feel

When something we've dreamed about

Quite suddenly is real.

There are times when only a mother's faith

Can help us on life's way

And inspire in us the confidence

We need from day to day.

For a mother's heart and a mother's faith

And a mother's steadfast love

Were fashioned by the angels

And sent from God above.
