April is an exam-filled month with students cramming for the upcoming exam. In order to relieve the tension and stress in campus, graduating students from the Student Executive Committee (SEC) organised an exam welfare event; Take a Break on 21st April 2017 at PoMo level 7 study lounge.

Game booths were set up for students to have a go at it with prizes to be won. Drinks are also distributed to students who attempted any game booth.

Additionally, we collaborated and invited Gobblershop Happy Carts to the campus, who offers basic necessities with monster savings.

As the saying goes, “When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping!” With that, Kaplan students and staff were invited to purchase snacks and

household items at low prices in classroom PoMo706.

We hope the game booths and happy carts had provided students some ease to their stressful minds and helped them to prepare better for their upcoming papers.

Kaplan Student Affairs organise monthly events with the student leaders from the Student Executive Committee for all students in Kaplan. Do enquire from us on the monthly activities and workshops which are specially organised for Kaplan students. Graduation

Organised by the students from the Chinese Student International (CSI) Club, a popular card game, “Werewolves” otherwise known as <<狼人杀>>, were held on 21st and 28th April 2017.

“Werewolf” is a role playing card game with players secretly assigned to a role. The game begins as a small village which is haunted by werewolves. There is a moderator who controls the flow of the game. The game alternates between night and day phases. At night, the werewolves secretly chooses a villager (player) to kill. During the day, the villager who was killed is revealed and is out of the game. The remaining villagers

deliberate and vote on a player they suspect is a werewolf to be executed to a death sentence. The “Werewolf” is a funny social game that can accommodate any large group of players with a different hidden role of identity.

Though no prizes are awarded to the last man standing in the games, everyone enjoyed the dinner and snacks provided and the students had a lot fun playing the games. In fact, due to overwhelming response, CSI club is planning to hold regular sessions of this game.

We want to thank all the members for being so participative and fun!

Career Development Series

A student’s perspective: You are starting your first semester of your university programme. It will be a long way till you graduate from your studies. Thinking about your career upon graduation is not important for you right now. Your career plans can wait. Maybe you will only start thinking about it when you are finishing your studies. A working professional’s perspective: You have been working for your current employer for the last ten years. You receive a fairly comfortable pay cheque every month and you believe that as long as you work hard, you will get your timely promotion and your job is secure.

The scenarios above are common perceptions that students and working professionals have. While

every individual have their own preference when it comes to their career planning, I believe that it is important to plan ahead.

Misconception One: I am still a student. I can think about my career when I am working

Dealing with schoolwork and extracurricular activities can be enough to keep most students tied up during their study years. However, the importance of career planning during these times should not be overlooked - you’ll be glad to be ahead of the job hunt race once graduation rolls around. Students today are graduating into one of the most competitive job markets as compared to recent decades. With more young people equipped with university education, the fact that you have a bachelor’s degree isn’t

enough to make you stand out from the crowd. Students need to do more during their study years to prepare for the job competition they’ll face after school is over. The importance of career planning in college can be overwhelming to some students, but in the end you’ll benefit from the extra work you put into planning your career path.

Misconception Two: As long as I continue to work hard for my company, my role will be safe.

With the constant changing landscape in many industries, the term “job for life” principle is getting less relevant. In fact, it will be a norm for individuals to have 4 to 7 job changes throughout our working lives. It is therefore important for working professionals to have a strategic career development plan in order to stay marketable and maintain the employability status in the job market.

Misconception Three: I have already had a formal education and I do not need further training and learning.

Consumer demand, technology and the highly evolving market means that you cannot afford to take on a complacent attitude towards ongoing knowledge and professional development. In fact, complacency may lead to outdated skills and eventually be a redundant asset to the company. Try to sign up for

short courses and workshops which can help you to stay in touch with the latest knowledge, skills and trends in your industry. Attending networking events can also help you to expand your professional circle which may enlighten you with other practices the industry is practicing. The knowledge you gain may be adopted by your company or open up your doors to a better career prospect.

Career planning is important in order to succeed professionally. Setting goals with no thought process as to how you are going to achieve them more often ends in failure. Lack of experience and knowledge can create pitfalls that make achieving these goals highly unlikely. Remember, career planning is a lifelong process and you need to actively continue your career development in order to achieve your desired goal. You need to set goals, objectives and work hard at ensuring you meet them. Approach our career counsellor or the Student Affairs and Graduate Services Office located at PoMo Campus Level 6 if you need help for your career planning.
