Explanation of LTC Report Column Headings

Kinds of Licenses to Carry California Penal Code establishes a license to carry a concealable firearm at § 26170 (formerly § 12050). Penal Code § 26220 distinguishes different types of licenses to carry by to whom issued and by duration of the license:

• Civilians – A license to carry is valid for two years for ‘civilians’ (26220(a)) • Employment – Ninety days for ‘civilians’ when based on the licensee’s place of

employment (26220(b)) • Judicial – Three years for a judge of a court of record, court commissioner, or

magistrate of a federal court (26220(c)) • Custodial Officer – Four years for a custodial officer who is an employee of a

sheriff (26220(d)) • Reserve Officer – Four years for a reserve police officer (26220(e))

License Status A license may be

• Active – all requirements have been met and the license has been issued • Pending – some step in the process is not yet completed • Cancelled – the licensee has chosen not to proceed further in the licensing process • Revoked – the issuing agency has revoked the license • Prohibited – after investigation, the licensee was determined to be prohibited from

receiving a license to carry Population Comparison Licenses to carry/1,000 adult residents in the city or county.
