Goodness me it is now 2016 – so Happy New Year. I hope you all received the 2016
prospectus and are looking forward to the programs coming up this year. Keep an eye out
for the Short Courses that will be advertised in the Buzz.
The last part of December was very sad with the passing of Elizabeth Grounds. A very
unexpected event. We will remember and be encouraged by Elizabeths memory. Thank you
to those members who attended her funeral.
The first of our trips will be advertised in the BUZZ – thanks to the efforts of our Trading
Table Team we will be subsidising this trip to the tune of $500.
Look forward to seeing you all soon.
Jill McArthur

COURSE COORDINATOR’S NOTES – KEITH THOMPSON 5443 7399
ENGLISH LANGUAGE: Myths, Lies and Half Truths in the English Language.
Diana Collier 5443 0137 will begin on Monday FEB 8th R1 at 10:00
Then every 2nd , 4th and 5th Monday except 29th Feb.
HAND CHIMES: with Graham Robinson 5439 5332, R2, 2:15, 1st Mondays
beginning Feb 1st.
“We have two instruments, a two octave set of tuned hand chimes, and two octave set tuned
bell plates. With these we play two notes each when the tune needs them to be played, so we
need 8 or 9 players for each set; but with 4 or 6 we can play a reasonable selection of tunes.
You do not have to read music – we go with a count of the beats, and you do not have to
“find” your note – the tuned note is in your hand.”
SHARE GROUP: starting 15th Feb, 10am—12noon
THE HISTORY OF EUCALYPTUS DISTILLING IN THE BENDIGO REGION
Presented by John Lindner 5448 3406 and Rex Fisher 5442 4611
Session one: Thursday March 31st in R1 at 2:30.
The history will be shared through a set of unique slides and sound track of the process used
by the original small scale distillers. John Lindner, who taught at the Huntly Environmental
Centre, has taken and preserved this set of images (now on CD). This program was prompted
by the discovery of abandoned distilleries by the bush walking groups. There will be other
historical input.
Session two:
A visit to the Inglewood Eucy Museum will be arranged for the following week. (About 3
hours including travel time, Museum cost $5.) This is proposed for Tuesday 5th April. Date
to be verified in session one

GARDENING AND GROWING THINGS
Our garden group have enjoyed a most successful 2015, we have visited
some lovely gardens, small and large, some local and some far afield. We
have come across some wonderful generous people, enjoyed meeting with
the U3A Castlemaine garden group, U3A Maryborough were also very
helpful in finding gardens for us to visit in their vicinity.
We are planning to visit with another of our regional U3As this year. A bus trip to a garden
down Macedon way is also planned for late March.
A reminder of events to come
Friday January 29, 10am- during Summer Days with U3A, Derek from the Habitat
Nursery will be leading a talk on native plants
Tuesday February 12, 10am- at St Mary’s the garden groups first meeting of the year to
find idea’s and make plans for the year ahead. Would you please bring a small plate to
share for morning tea.
Unfortunately Marg will not be able to assist me in running the group this year so an
offer of help would be wonderful.
