These changes are called METAMORPHOSIS.The butterfly’s METAMORPHOSIS happens in FOUR STAGES.

STAGE ONE: THE EGG

First Stage

A girl (female) butterfly lays eggs

The butterfly lays the eggs on a leaf

About 5 days after the eggs are laid, A tiny worm-like creature will hatch from the egg

STAGE TWO: The Caterpillar

Also known as the Larva

A worm-like creature

HUNGRY! HUNGRY Caterpillar!

Eats all the time!!!  

Grows & Grows very quickly

Becoming too big for its skin, it sheds or gets rid of its old skin

Gets new skin 4 OR MORE times while growing

Caterpillars do not stay in this stage very long. While they are in this stage, all they do is eat.

STAGE THREE: The Chrysalis Also known as the pupa

When the caterpillar is done growing, it makes a chrysalis

Chrysalis is brown or green
