Chili Cook Off

The other item I want to make sure to plug is our 257th Annual

Temple Bnai Israel Chili Cook Off.

For centuries, our greatest culinary artists and visionaries have gathered in the frozen waste of the Willimantic winter season to share the tasty delights of their own personal vegetarian chili recipes, in some cases passed down from Bubbe and Zadye themselves! And while it may be true that my family has won this event 178 times, going all the way back to my great-great-great-great-great grandfather Aloysius Alfredus Chiliriffic Golden and his greater Tri-Baltic State Area award winning recipe "Ochi Chernye," our stock has been fading somewhat of late. My daughters have basically grown out of the phase where they can simply "cute-ify" their way into getting everyone to vote for us. That's right, ladies and gentlemen, the field is wide open, and anyone could be the big winner.

The event this year will be held on Sunday, February 28th (snow date Sunday, March 6) and I strongly encourage everyone to attend. Whether you cook a pot of chili or simply come to judge the entries, your presence will be welcomed. Moreover, even if you don't like chili, my parents will make sure that there are alternatives, like whitefish, available, so there's really no reason not to come. If that wasn't enough, there will also be a pasta bar (with gluten free offerings), a make-your-own ice cream sundae buffet, a pinata for the kids, beer for the adults, and more. This is one of my favorite events of the year, and I truly hope to see you on February 28th! No pressure, but you better be there! That's all for this month, kids. See you around the synagogue. Until then, take care, be well, and do good! David Golden, President

MISSION STATEMENT

Visioning

Shalom! The first thing I want to let everyone know is that the second phase of our Temple's Visioning process is kicking into high gear in the early months of 2016.

We have formed four very strong task forces consisting of volunteers from both inside and outside our congregation, in the areas of Spirituality, Culture, Intellectual Offerings, and Families with Children/Youth.

These task forces will focus on their respective areas, work with the information we've already gathered from you and other members of our greater community, and help us come up with meaningful concrete suggestions for ways we can improve our Jewish community, congregation, synagogue and beyond.

Overseeing and coordinating all of this, while at the same time looking at the bigger picture, will be the Long Term Planning Committee. This committee and the task forces have either already started having meetings, or will do so in February. As we continue on this great adventure, we will endeavor to keep the greater congregation informed, and seek input from everyone before we commit to any larger changes.

Thank you again for your interest and participation in this process. As always, if anyone wants to get more involved, please do not hesitate to contact either Rav Jeremy or myself.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Page 4: The Bulletin - Temple Bnai Israel€¦ · If The Oceans Were Ink An Unlikely Friendship and a Journey to the Heart of the Quran By Carla Powers Thank you to Susan Meisler and Sheila

I’d like to encourage you to read Anne Willenborg’s Tikkun Olam report, in this edition of The Bulletin (pg. 6), about our Temple’s participation in a Northeast Connecticut interfaith effort to co-sponsor the settlement of refugees in our area. The topic of refugees has been much on our minds and in our hearts lately. If our hearts haven’t been completely hardened like Pharaoh’s, the news and images of refugees flowing out of Syria, Africa, and the wider Middle East, sometimes dying on the way, has been heartbreaking. And hearts that are open will also acknowledge fear and anger in response to the sheer magnitude of the humanitarian challenge, and to attacks in Europe carried out sometimes by people from the same places, or of the same religions, as the refugees (broadly speaking – like we at Temple Bnai Israel are the same religion as Jewish fanatics who recently burned a Palestinian family to death in the West Bank town of Duma).

But our heritage isn’t one of fear and anger.

We relate to our ancient slavery from Egypt not with anger, but by celebrating our freedom and by trying to create a society of freedom. We laugh at Haman. Our history and identity are entwined with being “other” and “foreign” and “powerless” and we try to act as people who “know the heart of the stranger.” It’s no coincidence that the words on the Statue of Liberty were penned by a Jew, Emma Lazarus.

My understanding is that the United States has the most rigorous vetting process for refugees in the world, and that no one who has been admitted through our refugee process has committed an act of terrorism in the U.S. I think it’s reasonable to assume that no system is perfect and some day, some refugee will commit a terrorist act here. Natural-born Americans of many different ethnicities and religions also commit terrorist acts and mass-murder attacks. That’s not a reason to refrain from acting Jewishly, out of love and hope. I’m proud that our Temple Board thought it obvious that we cannot be deterred by those dangers, and must live up to the Prophet Isaiah’s words that we read every Yom Kippur:

Is not the fast that I desire the unlocking of the chains of wickedness, the loosening of exploitation, the freeing of all those oppressed, the breaking of the yoke of servitude? Is it not the sharing of your bread with those who starve, the bringing of the wretched poor into your house, or clothing someone you see who is naked, and not hiding from your kin in their need? Then shall your light burst forth like the dawn, your waters of healing soon flourish again, your righteousness will travel before you, and the glory of THE ALMIGHTY will encompass you.

SERVICES

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 9:30am—BAGEL & BIBLE

Please note that the next meeting of the combined Spiritual Task Force/Ritual Committee will be Wednesday, February 10 at 7pm. We will work on continuing to develop concrete plans from the input we received at the Small Group Vision meetings and the Spirituality Brunch.

We ask Task Force members to come to the meeting with ideas for specific programming that they think could be implemented to meet the expressed desires of the community, or specific research for the Task Force to carry out, or specific ways of organizing and planning our spiritual life.

We’ll share and compare our ideas and decide on priorities for next steps. For more information, contact Judy Stein or Rav Jeremy

CARING COMMITTEE

COMMITTEE NEWS

Temple Bnai Israel’s, and the Tikkun Olam Committee’s, response to the Refugee Crisis

Last month the TBI Board approved support for the Refugee Resettlement Co-sponsorship Program that is being organized by Reverend Ann Plumley, Steve Lane and the First Church of Christ of Mansfield.

Integrated Refugee & Immigration Services (IRIS) is a program of the Episcopal Church dedicated to resettling refugees in Connecticut. The mission of IRIS is “to enable refugees and other displaced people to establish new lives, regain hope, and contribute to the vitality of Connecticut’s communities. Refugees are men, women and children who fled their countries of origin due to persecution on the basis of their race, nationality, religious belief, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.”

The United States has the most rigorous screening process for refugee resettlement in the world. In 2016 the U.S. will take in 85,000 refugees up from 70,000 in 2015. As other States have decided to decrease the number of refugees entering their states, IRIS is committed to helping a larger number of refugees enter Connecticut. Up until now, about 250 refugees have come to Connecticut each year. The hope is that this number can increase to 500 refugees in 2016. IRIS has an organized system for refugee resettlement. This involves a very large commitment including but not limited to ensuring refugees have housing and furniture, clothing, health care, education, language support, job opportunities and food security. IRIS limits the resettlement process to 4-6 months and greatly discourages producing financial dependence.

A prime directive is self-sufficiency. Since there will be a larger influx of refugees in Connecticut, and IRIS has received an overwhelming number of requests from people who want to help with refugees, IRIS has put together a co-sponsorship program. Communities can gather together resources and then apply to co-sponsor a refugee family (or families). These co-sponsors will be trained by IRIS and go through a rigorous training process. This is where TBI comes in. We have committed to being PART of the large group of individuals and groups organized by the First Church of Christ involved in co-sponsorship.

Our work has already begun to a small degree as some of us have been asked to help secure health care, jobs, and gather support for the program. We are happy that the TBI community is part of this process. Once co-sponsorship is approved, the group can receive notification that a family may arrive within 24 hours. We will keep you informed of the process and if you are interested in helping out please watch for requests for help on email and Facebook. As always, if you have any questions please ask.

Thank you, Anne Willenborg and the Tikkun Olam Committee

We have almost two thousand wonderful and varied Judaica in our library and we will be very grateful for your ideas on making it more accessible. Far too many CD’s and tomes have never been borrowed! Please write, e-mail or call, and share your ideas with Rav Jeremy, Brenda or Sue-Ellen. After-all, it is your library!

Here is a sampling of what awaits you:

For our children: One People, Many Stories This is a great 6 CD set of Jewish stories from around the World. From the Los Angeles Public Radio Series hosted by Jerry Stiller as the Story Peddler.

For Adults A gift from Judy Stein, thank you for donating the New American Haggadah by Jonathan Safran Foer and Nathan Englander (translator).

Remember Eating Animals also by Mr. Foer? Described by reviewers as “Brilliant reinterpreta-tion of the traditional text…” with commentary that is appreciated. How about augmenting your Passover this year with new text? I also enjoyed the artwork in this volume.

Ellis Island Interviews. In their own words by Peter Morton Coan. This book offers first- person insight into those Jewish emigrants from Eastern and Western Europe, the Middle East, Northern Europe, Italy and the British Isles who preceded us. A great read in part or entirety. I was so fascinated that I lost time reading some of the entries and not tending to “library business”. I think that you, also, will find it fascinating and heart rending.

The Book of Jewish Food by Claudia Roden and donated to us by Rav Jeremy and Merle. Thank you! This book was a recipient of the James Beard Foundation Cookbook of the Year Award. It has more than 800 recipes from both Ashkenazi and Sephardi. Try some new recipes from India, Italy, Turkey, Syria and more. Yum!

The Daughters of Abraham were invited to a traditional Muslim Turkish food luncheon by one of our members at the Peace Islands Institute in New Haven www.peaceislands.org. We traveled by carpool and met and enjoyed the company of the Sisters of Spirit and other Muslim friends of our hostess.

While there, we learned about the Institute, and each other, in a relaxed supportive atmosphere. As Virginia Fulton said, "the seemingly simple, universal act of gathering around food, conversation, music and dance has such power."

We hope that the understandings we gained about each other that day continue and spreads everywhere. Please join us.

"It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade." - Charles Dickens

Temple Bnai Israel is a welcoming Jewish community which offers a spiritual, religious, and social home for all Jews. We cherish a belief in one God, the Torah, prayer and the music and beauty of our Jewish culture. We are commanded and committed to passing these blessings on to all future generations.

We observe and celebrate Jewish traditions and laws, while remaining open to change which meets the needs of our time, and which will stand the test of time.

We intend to be a force for good and comfort as individuals and as a whole. We seek to offer justice, tolerance, and charity within the Temple Bnai Israel community, the larger Jewish community, and the non-Jewish worlds within which we live.

Our synagogue recognizes the equality of all Jews. Jewish men and women, including those Jews in interfaith marriages, are entitled to participate equally in all religious rites, and all secular and religious leadership positions. Our congregation also reaches out to all who welcome Judaism into their lives.

We believe in the ancient teaching: “to do justly, love mercy, and walk

humbly with thy God.”
