Leadership Lakes Region I am proud to be a member of the Leadership Lakes Region Class of 2016 and so very appreciative of the support The Taylor Community has given me to com-plete this class. I have been learning alongside some truly amazing community folks. We have all been pro-vided with a wealth of information, introduced to some pretty incredible people, received lessons that we would otherwise not have and, of course, have made many great friends and contacts. There is no doubt that we will all carry this information on to our varying careers to the benefit of others. In addition to myself, both Paul Charlton and Diane Poh have also completed this class.

From their website, I share the following about this important program:

French III Class Hosts Special Guest Below, an excerpt from the Dexter Southfield Commu-nity News newsletter of April 11, submitted by resi-dent Joe Picard’s daughter, Lynne Picard-Landa:

Last week, French III class was honored to get a visit from Mr. Joseph Picard, grandfather of Class 10 student Jordann Landa. Mr. Picard was raised speaking French in a French-Canadian communi-ty in Springfield, Mass. As a young soldier in World War II, he used his language skills to act as an ad-hoc interpreter for fellow soldiers when they landed on the beaches of Normandy just over two weeks after the D-Day invasion in 1944. While visiting Dexter Southfield, he recounted his family history and wartime adventures in flawless French, assuring the students, “Il est bon d’être bilingue!” (It is good to be bilingual!). It was so special to hear the wisdom, strength, and experience of such a remarkable veteran and Dexter Southfield family member. Many thanks to Mr. Picard and to the Landa family for making this visit possible.

Thursday – May 5 – The Pemigewasset Choral Society presents their 2016 Spring Concert Series – “I Write the Songs” [Easy]. This performance will take place at the Gilford Community Church. Admission is by donation. The bus will begin picking up Laconia Residents at 6:15 PM.

Friday – May 6 – Tour the Merrimack Brewery and visit the fa-mous Clydesdales [Moderate]. We learn about the history of An-heuser Busch, Inc. and observe how they brew and package Bud-weiser. You will also experience a rare, up-close meeting with the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales when you visit the Clydesdale Hamlet. Given to August Busch, Sr. as a gift to celebrate the end of prohibition, sons Adolphus III and August Busch, Jr. presented the first Clydesdale hitch to their father. Since that time, the Clydesdales have become an American symbol of tradition. Following the tour, our group will lunch at The Lobster Boat - For over 25 years, the Lobster Boat Restaurant has been a local favorite, known for its mouthwatering sea-food dishes and excellent service.

With two convenient locations in the greater Nashua area and one on the seacoast, the Lobster Boat is a very popular destination for families, busi-ness people, senior citizens and couples. Have someone in your party that doesn't like seafood? No problem! They have a large and varied menu to cater to all appetites. Tour Tickets are $7.00 per person payable upon arri-val. The bus will begin picking up residents on the Laconia campus beginning at 9:30 AM.

Friday – May 13 – Currier Gallery of Arts – Killer Heels – The Art of the High-Heeled Shoe [Moderate]. A fashionista’s dream, Killer Heels: The Art of the High-Heeled Shoe will present 300 years of fabulous footwear, re-vealing high heels as both stunning architectural creations and works of art in their own right. About 100 contemporary and 50 historical high heels will be on view, including shoes by noted designers Prada, Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Miu Miu, Christian Louboutin, Ferragamo, Manolo Blah-nik and more. Drawn from the collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, the exhibition includes six films created spe-cifically for the show by noted artists, each exploring the cultural, social and aesthetic qualities that make the high heel so fascinating. (Tickets $8/person, in addition to regular Museum admission of $10.00 to be paid at the door). Lunch will be at the Currier Winter Café. Following lunch, we will enjoy ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s. The bus will begin picking up residents on the Laconia campus at 9:15 AM.

Fabulous Furriness Cricket, Woodside resident Don Foudriat’s Golden Retriever, is both fabulous and furry! And she has a job — Cricket listens carefully as she helps children build their read-ing skills at the Gilford Public Li-brary. In her spare time, she also provides visits and companionship to area seniors in several local fa-cilities including here at Taylor.

Foudriat rescued Cricket through Sunshine Golden Retriever Rescue

in Maine. Cricket subsequently attained her therapy dog certification through the New Hampshire Humane Society.

Dogs like Cricket have a natural ability to help build confident readers. They are non-judgemental, never critical. They simply won’t correct a mispronunciation! And research has shown, again and again, that this type of environment increases literacy and confidence in young readers. It’s no wonder they like to read to such an appreciative audience!

Hooray for Cricket! (We like you too, Don!)

Staff Spotlight Bonnie Swain

We should all take time to thank our own Bonnie Swain. Bonnie has worked for Taylor since 2010 as a Housekeeper. Every morning as the residents awake and employees arrive at Taylor Home, we are greeted by Bonnie, who always seems to have a smile on her face. Always able to keep busy even when she’s finished her daily tasks, she will always find something else to do. And she’s never too busy to help out our residents should they be in need. Often the first person to share a compliment, Bonnie is always quick to help any other member of the Taylor Team. Whether another housekeeper or an LNA, she will help anyone. And she always goes above and beyond her duties to help our residents any way she can. When Bonnie is not working she is enjoying her time with her daughter Jerikah, 11, who is active in sports. She also has 4 goldfish and a cat to keep her busy at home! ~ Eliot Davis

promoting and putting in place a network of effective volunteer leaders with a variety of skills and interests. The program focuses on the important aspects of civic life by exploring and increasing general under-standing of the History and Culture, Economic, Politi-cal, Social, Educational and Health issues unique to the Lakes Region. It is the desire of Leadership Lakes Region to pro-mote volunteerism and teach people how to become involved in their community as a "lifelong" activity. By the end of the program, participants will be more knowledgeable than most about the Lakes Region Area and will have developed a network of others, like themselves, who are anxious to volunteer and work together to improve our communities. Leadership Lakes Region was founded in 1996 by citizens of the Lakes Region committed to fostering strong civic awareness in the community. The group modeled the program after other successful leader-ship programs throughout the United States. So many “Thanks” to Leadership Lakes Region and to The Taylor Community!

Voices From Spoon River

On May 2 at 2:00pm in Woodside, The Taylor Playreaders will present Voices From Spoon River, their adaptation of Edgar Lee Masters 1915 Spoon River Anthology.

In his best-selling work, regarded today as the Peyton Place of its time, Masters created 214 compelling free verse monologues, which are spoken from their graves by the former residents of his mythical mid-western town. Their voices, as they regard their lives, are plaintive, anguished, angry, contemplative and evoke themes of love, hope, disappointment and des-pair. They range from the comic to the crushingly sad.

The Spoon River Anthology has been adapted by several playwrites. The most lavish production, in 1962, used over 100 performers and 17 musical numbers. The even dozen playreaders will have, thanks to the musical and vocal talents of guest artist Jane Ellis, two versions of a traditional folk song.

The Playreaders’ adaptation began with 34 characters which they whittled down to 26, who are appropriate representatives of American small-town life at the turn of the 20th Century. While the parent work is just over 100 years old, many of the situations revealed feel remarkably contemporary.

See You There!
