Cyrus was the king of Persia during the Babylonian exile when the Jewish people were conquered and taken off into captivity. During the exile, King Cyrus the Great conquered Babylon and set the Jewish people free, rebuilding their holy temple out of his royal treasury. In our first reading this foreign king, a pagan, is called Gods anointed, that is Messiahor Christ, the only non-Jew ever to be called so. This reading proclaims in no uncertain terms that God is in control. The universe belongs to the Lord, who can use even those who are outside the dispensation of faith to bring about his salvation. This reading is paralleled by todays Gospel, which mentions Cae- sar, the emperor of the Roman Empire. In a certain sense the Romans can- not be compared to the Persians, since the Romans actually conquered and oppressed the Jewish people and eventually sacked Jerusalem, destroying her holy temple. They also oppressed Christianity and at times used the Christian Church as a political device. Yet in another sense, it cannot be denied that through the Roman Empire, salvation was brought to the ends of the earth. That is not to say God made the Romans oppress and destroy, but that God always has the power to make the best out of the worst possible situation. Death can lead to resurrection. For while Ro- man rule and oppression made all seem hopeless to both Jews and Chris- tians alike, God was indeed working, and over time the network of the Empire became the medium by which the faith spread throughout the en- tire world. So because of Gods light shining in a dark place, though at times it may have seemed dim, Europe became Christian, and as a result we here in Australia are able to know Christ. This brings me to a question I have. What belongs to God, and what belongs to Caesar? Of course Jesus was right that the denarius belongs to Caesar, but our readings together show us a bigger picture. Ultimately the denarius belongs to God, for everything, including Caesar, belongs to the Lord from whom all things proceed and to whom all things will return. I believe this leaves us with at least two important messages: Firstly, since we belong to the Lord, lets act like it! Let us fulfil Jesuscommand and give ourselves daily to our Lord, which is what true freedom consists of. Secondly, let us not be tempted to despair. God is constantly working, and if God can use the Roman Empire to spread salvation, he can make good out of any situation. Lets look carefully with the eyes of faith for the traces of God, for that light which shines in the darkness, though it may at times seem dim. By: Thomas Duncan

29th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A

The Scriptures proclaimed to us today contain a fascinating reality. Listen to the opening words of our first reading from the prophet Isaiah: “Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him.” Allow me to put things in perspective. Cyrus was the king of Persia during the Babylonian exile when the Jewish people were conquered and taken off into captivity. During the exile, King Cyrus the Great conquered Babylon and set the Jewish people free, rebuilding their holy temple out of his royal treasury. In our first reading this foreign king, a pagan, is called God’s “anointed,” that is “Messiah” or “Christ,” the only non-Jew ever to be called so. This reading proclaims in no uncertain terms that God is in control. The universe belongs to the Lord, who can use even those who are outside the dispensation of faith to bring about his salvation.

This reading is paralleled by today’s Gospel, which mentions Cae-sar, the emperor of the Roman Empire. In a certain sense the Romans can-not be compared to the Persians, since the Romans actually conquered and oppressed the Jewish people and eventually sacked Jerusalem, destroying her holy temple. For while Ro-man rule and oppression made all seem hopeless to both Jews and Chris-tians alike, God was indeed working, and over time the network of the Empire became the medium by which the faith spread throughout the en-tire world. So because of God’s light shining in a dark place, though at times it may have seemed dim, Europe became Christian, and as a result we here in Australia are able to know Christ.

I believe this leaves us with at least two important messages: Firstly, since we belong to the Lord, let’s act like it! Let us fulfil Jesus’ command and give ourselves daily to our Lord, which is what true freedom consists of. Secondly, let us not be tempted to despair. God is constantly working, and if God can use the Roman Empire to spread salvation, he can make good out of any situation.
