Dear friends in Christ, It seems to me that many people today are living their lives in fear. On the personal level there is the fear of illness, fear of losing a job, fear of failure, and vari- ous individual fears, to name just a few. On a larger level we find fear of terrorists, fear of people who are different from us, fear of the way the world is going. To top this all off there are those who feed these fears hoping to manipulate people into go- ing along with what they want. While acknowledging that some of these things are legitimate concerns, I also believe that they should not cause us to be afraid. I am reminded of the words of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in his first inaugural address, “So, first of all, let me as- sert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is...fear itself”. As followers of Jesus Christ we are called to live in faith rather than fear. Fear is a lack of trust in God, saying that God can’t or won’t handle the situations we face. We do not deny the seriousness of the issues, the difficulties of dealing with disease or financial problems, the reality of terrorism and crime, or the other prob- lems. We believe that all these things are within God’s ability to work all things to- gether for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Rom. 8:28). We affirm that God is in control and that in His time He will establish His kingdom, putting an end to all forms of evil. On the night before His death Jesus told the disciples, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.(John 14:1), “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.(John 14:27) and “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.(John 16:33). We cannot control what may happen to us, but we can choose how we will respond. We can let our lives be controlled by fear or we can turn to God for help, trusting that He will provide what we need. We can listen to the fear-mongers or we can listen to Scripture. When trials come, and they will come, what will your attitude be? May it be like the prophet Habakkuk’s when he was facing the coming invasion of the Babylonians and the destruction of Jerusalem: Habakkuk 3:1719 Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights. Dear friends in Christ,

It seems to me that many people today are living their lives in fear. On the personal level there is the fear of illness, fear of losing a job, fear of failure, and vari-ous individual fears, to name just a few. On a larger level we find fear of terrorists, fear of people who are different from us, fear of the way the world is going. To top this all off there are those who feed these fears hoping to manipulate people into go-ing along with what they want.

While acknowledging that some of these things are legitimate concerns, I also believe that they should not cause us to be afraid. I am reminded of the words of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in his first inaugural address, “So, first of all, let me as-sert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is...fear itself”.

As followers of Jesus Christ we are called to live in faith rather than fear. Fear is a lack of trust in God, saying that God can’t or won’t handle the situations we face. We do not deny the seriousness of the issues, the difficulties of dealing with disease or financial problems, the reality of terrorism and crime, or the other prob-lems. We believe that all these things are within God’s ability to work all things to-gether for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Rom. 8:28). We affirm that God is in control and that in His time He will establish His kingdom, putting an end to all forms of evil.

On the night before His death Jesus told the disciples, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.” (John 14:1), “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27) and “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33).

May it be like the prophet Habakkuk’s when he was facing the coming invasion of the Babylonians and the destruction of Jerusalem:

Habakkuk 3:17–19 Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights.

Blessings in Christ,

Pastor Leigh

FROM THE DEACONS

Submitted by Jim Plummer

Devotional

We worship by surrendering our will to God.

We must never rest until everything inside us worships

God. —A.W. Tozer

That statement from Tozer is a tall order, isn’t it?

“Everything inside us, God? Really? How about 73%

of what’s inside us? Is that enough? Can we keep 27%

of our own will, and do things our way?” We could, but

it would be in our best interest to surrender all. Do not

be misled: surrendering your will shows anything but

timidity. It’s one of the most laborious things you’ll

ever do. Yet, it can be one of the most freeing and

peaceful acts at the same time.

We are blitzed, pestered, and harassed on every side

with “stuff” that is vying for our attention. And not just

stuff, but events, ideas, dreams, mindsets and plans that

seem to be amazing. They appear to make sense in a

society that has vaccinated itself against God. But God

calls us to a higher standard. One where we cast aside our own agenda for a

higher purpose.

One that will introduce us to “His good, pleas-

ing and perfect will.” As Christ followers, we are called to fufill His purpose,

not ours. To love Him with our whole hearts, disregard-

ing all else that competes for our devotion. To love oth-

ers as much as we love ourselves. (And that's a whole

lot.) To make His name known, and to

build His legacy, rather than ensuring that our name is

known. What if, in the midst of the temptations this world

throws at us, we choose not to conform to the standards

that everyone else seems to think are normal or, even

worse, expected? What if we instead yield our will to

what He calls us to do? We’re called to push all of our

affection to a loving God who adores us — not to wor-

ship the material possessions that this world offers.

This God that we get to spend the rest of our

days worshiping is good. His plans are spectacu-

lar, and He invites us to join Him. Even the most

outrageous and dazzling ideas we have for a

good life aren’t even in the same universe as the

plans He has for us.

Our God is mighty, majestic, all-knowing, and non-

slumbering. He is the founder of the world, the

maker of the seas, the wind-rider, the star-namer,

the sin-forgiver and the joy-giver. God is holy,

good, great, and the healer of the brokenhearted.

And He loves us so much. Now, let’s spend the rest of our days worshiping

Him. Reflect

Read through Psalm 96, and declare it to

your God as you do.

Ask God to reveal to you any purposes or plans

you’ve set in place that are not His best.

Write down any revelation that God speaks to you

through today’s Bible reading or devotional.

In His Service,

Jim

We are called by God to tell everyone about Jesus.

We invite you into a personal relationship with Him and into our community of

changed lives where we support each other, praise God together, and share our gifts in love.
