My Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Welcome to October, a month chock full of wonderful activities to demonstrate
our love for GOD and all the people around us.
We have pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins; tens of thousands of pounds of pump-
kins. Yes, that’s right. Fall is here because the pumpkins have arrived. I don’t see
many leaves changing but I do see glorious pumpkins. Remember that all of the
proceeds from our pumpkin patch support our youth on their mission trips and
other ministry opportunities.
We can help by signing up to watch the pumpkin patch throughout this month.
The sign-up board is in the office so you can stop on by with calendar in hand to
sign up or give our Youth Director Pam Szymczyk a call. If you missed the first
opportunity to unload thousands and thousands of pounds of pumpkin (like I did)
you still have a second chance as more pumpkins will arrive later this month.
This coming Saturday, October 5th, we have our Third Annual Missions Golf
Tournament. Our Missions Golf Committee has been working for months and
months now to make sure our golf tournament raises as much money as possible
for the homeless school children of St. Lucie County and our other mission em-
phases. If like me you don’t play golf and know you will do a great dis-service to
both the game and the event you can come for lunch at Gator Trace Golf Club and
participate in the fabulous silent auction. Call the church office for more infor-
mation. Fore!
Our Fall Festival is fast approaching on Saturday, October 26th. The Fall Festival
is frankly the best opportunity we have all year to welcome guests to our church.
There will be thousands of people here that day so please make plans now to be
here that day to welcome our community in a variety of ways. You should have
already begun to hear just how we can help to welcome all of these folks that are
on their way to our church on Saturday, October 26th. You know what they say in
cinema land: “If you build it they will come…” We have built they will come.
There is more to October at First United Methodist Church than these wonderful
busy days. We will take a good look at who we are in GOD’s eyes this coming
Sunday as we celebrate my favorite Sunday of the year, World Communion Sun-
day. This month we will also celebrate our Youth Ministry as they lead us in wor-
ship and throughout this month we will see all GOD has done for us and all GOD
has done through us this year at FUMC. I look forward to seeing you all through-
out this vibrant, glorious month.
In the Amazing Love of Jesus Christ,
Pastor Brian

September was a good month for youth ministry. We reached out beyond our doors to help
our neighbors here and our neighbors in the Bahamas. On September 11th, we walked to the
neighborhood fire department that is very close to the church, we took cookies and wanted to
say thank you for their service and that we appreciated what they do every day. They were
so kind; they gave us a tour of the station and the trucks.
We wanted to help the Bahamas by collecting baby wipes, food,
toilet paper, tooth brushes, tooth paste and a 12 man tent. We
placed them on our stage then circled around them and prayed
that God would take them where they needed to be. The next
day I drove them to Missionary Flights International where they
had a very smooth donation drop off collecting from those who were donating. There
was a steady stream of cars doing the same thing.
Philippians 2:4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the
others. When we see and hear how others are living, we are so blessed and we have
to not forget that in the business of our lives that there are so many people living with-
out anything in this moment. Luke 6:31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.
What a wonderful world we would have if we put God in the center and lived outside
the circle.
Wednesday small groups have started back for the fall. The girls small group is studying
“Looking for Lovely.” It is reminding us in the middle of all that we do that there is good.
Our Scripture is Romans 5:3-5 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we
know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character,
hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our
hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
Our journey will take us through this time in our life and help us to understand what God is
doing in our everyday life.

PUMPKINS ARE HERE AND WE NEED YOU!!!!!! Please help us by signing up to sell pumpkins for this month. This is the fundraiser that supports us all year. We can’t do it
without our congregation. We have school and homework and sports. We need you to help us during the day when we are at
school. We would also like to work with you to get to know the adults in our congregation better. This is also a ministry to
our community. We can pray for them, invite them to fall festival and most of all invite them to church on Sunday.
Thank you for your support.
Our Lay Servant Ministry conducts
a worship service each Monday at
11:15 am at the WaterCrest Senior
Living facility in St Lucie West. We
would love to have you join us by
11 am. The facility is located at 279
NW California Blvd. (just north of
St. Lucie West Blvd, just beyond the
Sparkle Carwash). For more
information, please call

PRAYER SHAWL
MINISTRY Knit & Crochet Every Monday at 1 pm
(except Holidays)
ALL ARE WELCOME!! We teach beginners! Teenagers and
older. We share patterns, yarn and
stories. We will help you with
problems you may have.
We are a fun group!
Northport K-8 Update The connection with our neighborhood school, the
Northport K-8 School, continues to grow and strengthen! On September 8 we were delighted to have Mr. Glenn Rustay, the school’s principal, and Mrs.
Lynne Gruszka, the school’s media specialist and volunteer coordinator, speak at all of our
worship services. Mr. Rustay expressed his deep appreciation for all the things our
congregation does for the school. He noted that Northport, as a Title I school with students eligible for free and
reduced fee breakfast and lunch, is not “supposed” to be a school with a strong “B” grade – because of our
collective efforts, the school has exceeded expectations! Please come by the church office to see the letter Mr.
Rustay read to our congregation and view the beautiful picture signed by all the school’s staff.
Speaking of books: we are still accepting new and gently used books that are appropriate for children in grades
Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. Right now we have around 2,200 books packed up, well on our way to our
goal of 3,600 books! Students get to pick out some books near the end of the school year so they will have their
very own books to keep and read (and reread!) over the summer. In many of these families, these are the only
books in the house. So keep your eyes open for thrift shops, yard sales, and library sales that may have books
our Northport children would enjoy!
NEW: Several teachers from Northport have reached out to us for help with funding special projects. One is a
Spanish teacher that would like to purchase a novel in Spanish for each of her 8th grade students; the STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) teachers need funding help for a trip to the NASA Space Center for
their students; and basic school supplies are especially helpful at mid-semester (pencils, pens, lined paper,
colored pencils, and markers). If you’d like to donate funds for these projects, please place your gift (marked
“Northport”) in the offering plate. School supplies and books can be brought to the church office.
Thank you for your constant prayers for Northport’s children, teachers, and staff as
we work together to make Northport an “A” grade school!

WEDNESDAY EVENING FELLOWSHIP POTLUCK
October 9th
The Wednesday evening fellowship potluck will be starting back the second Wednesday of
October and then on the second Wednesday of every month following. The meal runs from
5:30—about 7 pm. This is a time to get together and share a meal with other parishioners and
guests. The meals always have a variety of dishes and the fellowship is fantastic. You will
have the opportunity to meet people who attend other services and to bring new people to the
church in a friendly atmosphere. We look forward to seeing you there, sharing a meal and
spending time together. You might be surprised what you learn about the people you see in
church on Sunday.
For further information contact Cheryl Patterson at (720) 480-3461 or
Cathy Felber at (786) 393-8276 or ask the church office.

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome anyone interested in
making friends and getting involved with people that enjoy sewing or making
quilts for charity needs. This is a mission of First United Methodist Church of
PSL that was established about five years ago with the idea of bringing people
together with a similar interest led by God. The group started out with women
who either wanted to learn the art of quilting or were experienced quilters
helping others enjoy and learn the art of quilting.
Over the past five years, we have grown in members and shared much
knowledge amongst each other,. The experienced quilters have been able to put
on classes and shared their knowledge about new techniques and patterns. We
have taught the basics of quilting to new quilters that have the desire to learn
new techniques and over time we began charity sewing and quilt making. To
name a few of our ongoing projects are feminine hygiene pads for young girls in
Haiti, quilts for new homeowners with Habitat for Humanity in St. Lucie
County, quilts for Hospice patients and quilts for the new Veterans home to be
opened soon in Port St. Lucie.
The Habitat for Humanity quilts included attending the dedication ceremony
and presenting the quilt to the new homeowner. These quilts are made with love
and are appreciated by the recipients.
The new Veterans home in Port St Lucie will be a 120 bed facility and we hope
to have a quilt for each occupant. The home is in Tradition and the veterans hold
a special place in our hearts.
Quilts are also made for shut-ins from our own church.
We also work with the police department and fire department to supply quilts
for children who have gone through traumatic experiences. This supplies comfort
in their time of need.
The quilt group meets every Thursday in Room 101 of the Beacon Life Center
from 9 am to noon. We will continue to be open to new ideas and opportunities.
Come join us regardless of your skill level. We only want to share our love of
sewing and quilting to comfort those in need. The room is large and thanks to
generous donations we have ample supply of material to work with. It is a time
to make new friendships that will last a lifetime. This group is open to anyone
whether they belong to our church or not. Please come and check us out, you are
more than welcome.
In the past year we have also expanded the group and meet on the first, third
and fifth Tuesdays of the month from 6-8 pm in Room 101 of the Beacon Life
Center. This is also open to anyone and allows those that work during the day to
become part of the group.
So we extend an invitation to anyone who would like to get involved, doing
God’s work here on earth.
This is open to all members of the church and non-members so feel free to bring
a friend or neighbor. We welcome anyone with an interest in sewing of any kind.
We have received a request to start making clothing for both local and
outside people in need of clothing, especially children. We want to take God’s
work where ever it is needed.
For further information, contact Cheryl Patterson at (720) 480-3461
or Hope Murphy at (719) 510-6486.

The Music Note
What a great summer we had during worship! The fall
always brings new and exciting things. Can’t wait to see
what the Holy Spirit brings!
We will not be meeting this month for our monthly
sing-a-long. Be sure to join us in November. You’ll be
glad you did!
The choir is diligently practicing lots of Christmas
music, as well as regular worship music. It’s nice to have
them back in worship as a group again.
Wasn’t hearing the bell ensemble a beautiful thing?
Thanks to all who took their time to practice and bring us
awesome music!
I have used all of the “favorite hymn” selections that
you previously picked, its time to send me some more for
the next hymn sing. Drop a note in the offering plate or in
the office and let me know what you’d like to sing in
December.
We are looking for additional help in the sound booth
for our traditional services. If you are interested in helping
out, please see me or any of the wonderful people who are in
the booth. They’ll be sure to help you find your spot. Training
is available and you will be so happy to be a part of this
wonderful team.
Thank you to everyone who sent cards, messages, and
prayed for my recent surgery. Prayer is so powerful, and
was very much appreciated.
Thanks again,
Debbie

CHURCH GARDEN The mission of the Church
Garden is to grow delicious fresh
herbs and vegetables to support the
feeding ministries of the church. The work of the
garden will be performed by volunteers from within
the congregation, including the youth group. The
garden is located behind the Outreach Center.
We have laid out the cinder blocks to form the
walls of raised bed number one. We have put down
2 layers of cardboard. We have a workday planned
to install pavers to form a path between the two
beds. We also plan to layout the cinderblocks to
form bed number two.
We have modified the design of the garden to
ensure we have adequate space for activities in and
around the garden area, such as retrieving the pallets
for use in the pumpkin patch. The Church Garden
will now consist of two (2) raised planting beds.
Each raised bed will be four (4) feet wide and forty
(40) feet long. In total, there will still be three
hundred and twenty (320) square feet of growing
space. With the approval of the Finance Committee,
we are looking for sponsors to step out in faith and
sponsor one square foot of garden space for ten
dollars ($10). You may sponsor more than one
square foot if you feel led to do so. Donations may
be made by including it with your Sunday offering.
Indicate on your envelope or your check how much
is for your offering and how much is for the Garden.
So far, we have 12 square feet of garden space
sponsored.
Your sponsorship will provide for the initial
supplies to create your square foot of garden bed
and the initial planting of herbs and/or vegetables.
The garden beds themselves will consist of a mix of
peat moss, vermiculite, manure, garden soil, and
various other soil amendments.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO
ANY GARDENING AT ALL! All of the gardening will be done by volunteers
from within the congregation, including the youth
group. Additional expertise will be provided by the
University of Florida/Institute of Food and
Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS).
We look forward to your prayerful consideration
in support of this worthwhile ministry. Your
support will feed the hungry, provide the youth with
an opportunity to serve, and help beautify the church
grounds.

SIX KEYS TO OPEN THE DOOR TO MISSIONS
3 * THE THIRD KEY: THE VISION MUST BE PRESENTED
It is not enough for the mobilizer to have missionary vision and to prepare. His or her function is to contribute to the missionary development of the entire congregation. That is why the vision must be aimed at a serious, thoughtful and progressive project.
Making this project known requires a well thought out preparation, given in a timely manner and in an appropriate manner. It will be essential to have an interview with the pastor or church manager. When requesting the interview you have to make it known it's
purpose, briefly and concise.
Here are some topics to consider for the interview: Prepare a sketch with the presentation. Prepare well what you will communicate. A vague, inaccurate presentation will not be well received. We must always seek that the presentation of the missionary project is within the interest of the church and its immediate reality. For this, the congregation, its strengths and weaknesses must be known. The presentation must be accompanied by written material that explains it's purpose in detail. * Request permission and pastoral support to form a group or committee of missions in the congregation. * It must be ensured that the pastor integrates it. Otherwise, it can be one of the leaders of the congregation, in order to be the link between the missions committee and the leadership. Seek other recognized people to integration the team. But don't worry if just a few approach with "missionary mentality or
concern." Do not forget that you should Start with those who are willing. * Coordinate a periodic meeting with the pastor, to give reports of how it is being carried out and the progress of the task. This wiil be a moment to inform the pastor of the progress and difficulties, and about the projects and ideas. * Always maintain a servant's attitude and be prepared to give a report or presentation when require to.

Missionaries--from everywhere to everywhere! Joseph Paul was an African American Methodist, a former slave, from South Carolina. He migrated to the island of Abaco in the
Bahamas, in 1783. Paul is credited as the first to introduce Methodism to black communities in the islands. You can pray for the Bahamas with this video as a guide: https://prayercast.com/bahamas.html

Disaster Response and Recovery United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) responds to disasters in the United States and around the
world by working with communities and local partners. When a disaster overwhelms a community’s ability to recover on its own, UMCOR provides essential relief supplies and supports long-term rebuilding efforts. While UMCOR is not a first-response organization, it stands ready to accompany communities in need over the long
haul of their recovery until a “new normal” is established after a crisis. “EARLY IN AND LAST OUT” IS A GUIDING PRINCIPLE OF UMCOR.

RESPUESTA A DESASTRES Y RECUPERACIÓN

Autumn Leaves
Gen 1:12: The land produced […] trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. (NIV)
Activity: Have the children gather (or make) leaves of different colors before sharing this devotion. When you gather together, let the children show and talk about their collections. Ask them why trees have leaves. Accept all reasonable answers, and explain that leaves may be small, but they are part of God's plan for the world.
Look at the leaves you've collected. Are they green? No, and this is part of God's plan, too. The first day of summer is the longest day of the year, and has the most sunlight. As the season changes from summer into autumn, the days grow shorter and shorter. God created the trees to work with the sun, and when the days offer less sunlight, the trees know it is time to get ready for winter.
