Outline

A planar map is just a graph drawn in the plane (or on the sphere)viewed up to continuous deformation.It should be interpreted as a discretized model of the sphere.

Goal: To show that a large planar map chosen uniformly at random ina suitable class (p-angulations) and viewed as a metric space (for thegraph distance) is asymptotically close to a universal limiting object :

Strong analogy with random paths and Brownian motion: Brownianmotion is the universal continuous limit of a variety of discrete modelsof random paths.
