For the second year in a row, the Brooklyn Center Music Department has officially been recognized as one of the “Best Communities for Music Education in America” by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation!

Brooklyn Center High School is one of only 10 schools in the nation named by the NAMM Foundation to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to providing music education for their students.

Tonight, representives from the NAMM Foundation will be here with a special presentation to celebrate earning the designation of Best Communities for Music Education. This honor celebrates communities supporting music education throughout the United States that exemplify a commitment to music education and the importance of keeping music programs strong in our schools.

University of Minnesota - Morris Jazz Festival 2012This past April, the BC Jazzers traveled to the University of Minnesota - Morris for an overnight band tour. A fancy coach bus took them to Morris where they spent the afternoon attending the festival. Then, after a fun-filled night of hanging out at the hotel in pool-side rooms, they performed at the world-renowned Jazz Festival.

Over the course of the four-day festival, hundreds of high school students from around the region participated. The BC Jazz Band had five members receive top festival honors - “Best in Festival” for their superior performance: Moua Lee, Marcus Taylor-Loyd, Jason Tyacke, Tommy Sweany and Michael Lee.

This past April, the trumpet players from the High School Band performed the National Anthem for the Minnesota Twins vs. Boston Red Sox game.

They joined 120 other trumpet players, including the Principal Trumpet Player for the Minnesota Orchestra, Manny Laureano. It was an amazing experience and we plan on making this an annual event.

The Brooklyn Center Bands were featured in the October 2011 issue of School Band and Orchestra Magazine. Each month, this magazine goes out to every single music teacher in the country, so it was quite an honor for the students and the program to be recognized nationally for all of their hard work and dedication to the band program! Way to go Bandos!

B A N D S E N I O R SFavorite Band Memory:Jazz FestivalsFavorite Band Song:April by Aaron PerrineMemorable Moment:Eau Claire Jazz Festival last year and the Jazz

Combo was outside in the middle of the parking lot practicing. We had no instruments so we did our fingering and sang our parts while Marcus pounded on a wall. By far one of the best moments ever!!!!!Advice to future band members: Practice and don’t waste this opportunity. I met some of the best people in band; some great friends, and someone who treated me like I was her daughter. I will never forget what all these people did for me and am so grateful for all the lessons and opportunites I got through this program!

K E L L A A U L DFavorite Band Memory:Too many to choose from, but I would choose my first jazz trip to Eau Claire in 2010 because we had goooood times.Favorite Band Songs:

An American Elegy and Flight of the ThunderbirdMemorable Moment:Anytime we bandos play music beautifully, I had too many good moments with the band it’s hard to choose from it. Porter, you are no doubt the teacher that I had the longest, like my quote to the people who ask about the band program, “Before band you have one mom, but when you join band, you have two moms, momma mom and Porter mom.” I thank you for the greatest experience of my high school career. Thank you. Advice to future band members:Practice to exceed the past class. Make yourself proud. Also, instead of just hitting the notes, PLAY the notes, make music beautiful. PASSION. Oh, one more thing, music is fun when you’re good, so practice to be good. Don’t be the one that brings the group down, be the one they look up to to play with.

Favorite Band Memory:All of the Field TripsFavorite Band Song:An American ElegyMemorable Moment:Playing An American Elegy, Porter wearing a dress

and make-up and putting on a fashion show at the Morris Jazz Festival and going all out at the homecoming game.Advice to future band members:Keep on committing and never let fear hold you back from your skills - use that as your target to achieve your goals. I will miss band a lot and wish you guys the best of luck.

Favorite Band Memory:Tri-Metro All Conference OrchestraFavorite Band Song:Among the CloudsMemorable Moment:

The Christmahanakwanazaka party this past December when Alanna wrapped up the $5 with a TON of duct tape and other things that took Rosie forever to open, and the Transformers Bowling Ball we gave to Porter.Advice to future band members:Stay committed to the songs you play in band. Remember, with practice, you can only get better! I’m really going to miss band.

E R I C H A Y E S

Favorite Band Memory:Jazz Fests: Morris and Eau Claire were both radical.Favorite Band Songs:Get it On and MantecaMemorable Moment:At Eau Claire in 2011,

Jazz Combo wanted to practice our songs, but we didn’t want to get our instruments out and disturb other people at the hotel. So we gathered outside and sang our parts. There’s a video of it somewhere. It was very amusing.Advice to future band members:Practice outside of class. It will help you to become a better musician and help the entire band sound better.

M A T T P A L L O

Favorite Band Memory:I loved doing the Concerts of Rock and going on all of the field trips like Camp Friendship and the U of M.

Favorite Band Songs:Flight of the Thunderbird and DisarmedMemorable Moments:When Paul tried to conduct the band and also the first day of jazz band. I saw tons of older kids, 3 bassists and guitarist (which intimidated me so much), but other than that it was an amazing experience.Advice to future band members:Be willing to learn. Don’t take band to just get a good grade or else youre going to be bored and may not even get that good grade. Join for your own enjoyment and let the good times roll ;) There will be plenty of good times in band. It’s been such a wonderful 6 years. Thank you so much Bandos, Porter, Winslow, Mr. Nelson, and Dan.

M A R C U S T A Y L O R - L O Y D

Favorite Band Memory:Going to Camp Friendship in tenth grade. I was the first to do the “Barbarian Run”. It was a blast!Favorite Band Song:Flight of the Thunderbird

Memorable Moment:Playing the sax solo in the Flight of the Thunderbird. Advice to future band members:Practice may be boring and seem useless but it’s not. I had an awesome experince during my four years here in band. It helped me grow, learn to work with others and was a great mix of work and fun! Thank you again, may you never give up and have the energy to keep going strong.

Trudy Allen “Band Grandma” Scholarship - Jason TyackeA scholarship has been started this year to honor Ms. Porter’s grandmother, Trudy Allen, or “Band Grandma” as she liked to be called. Band Grandma was one of the band’s most loyal fans and loved music her entire life. She loved coming to ALL the concerts and watching all the kids. She always brought cookies to the band because “that’s what grandmas do.” Every spring, Ms. Porter would bring 50 to 75 students to Band Grandma’s senior building, and

they would perform a concert. Grandma was very proud of her granddaughter, Christine, and the work that the students in the BC Band program had accomplished. Each year the performance was excellent, and all the residents marveled at the music and wonderful behavior of the students. They had that building rocking! After the performance, Grandma made sure there was lunch and lots and lots of goodies for the kids. It was definitely one of her favorite days of the year.

Everyone who came into contact with Trudy Allen would hear about the accomplishments of the BC Band. Grandma always believed in helping children, so even though she will no longer bring cookies to the concerts, this scholarship will continue her spirit of giving. She was a believer in the power of education and in the band students that have demonstrated unlimited energy to strive and drive for excellence.

Christine Porter Band Scholarship - Michael LeeThe Christine Porter Band Scholarship was started by an anonymous donor in 2006 : “The Christine Porter Scholarship is presented to an outstanding band student in honor of the exceptional service and tireless devotion to BCHS and to the band displayed by their director Chris Porter.

Every student who has had the opportunity to work with her, whether they pursue music as a career or not, is better for having been a part of the band and for having known and worked with Ms. Porter. Whatever they do, if they can take even a portion of her devotion to quality, her amazing creativity, and her example of exemplary conviction and tireless effort, they will doubtlessly excel at whatever career they choose. With this scholarship we would like to say to Ms. Porter that we are immeasurably grateful for what you have done for all our students.”

Directors Award - Kella AuldThe Directors Award is giving to one senior each year who goes above and beyond what is asked in the Instrumental Music Program. These students show leadership, character, and an involvement in multiple facets of the music program. The Directors Award is an honor to receive.

Louis Armstrong Jazz Award - Marcus Taylor-LoydThe Louis Armstrong Jazz Award was introduced in 1974 with the approval of his widow, Lucille Armstrong, to honor outstanding jazz students. Because the Armstrong Award recognizes the highest achievement in jazz performance at each school, quantities are limited to one per school, except in the event of a tie.

John Philip Sousa Band Award - Tommy SweanyThe pinnacle of achievement in a high school band program, the Sousa

Award recognizes outstanding dedication and superior musicianship.

The award has become a nationwide symbol of excellence in musical

achievement.
