BRIDGES

Extreme high water and milch driftwood in the most northerlyend of the Fort St. John Highway District caused the col/apse ofthe Tuya River Bridge centre span recently. A bove picture is anaerial view of the remains of the bridge and the inset shows P. J.

Fort St. John District bridge crew under Foreman Floyd Erick­stad recently constructed a new bridge over the Alces River onthe Cecil Lake Road 6 miles west of the British Columbia-Albertaborder. The deck system, a departure from past practice in thedistrict, consists of 24 prestressed-concrete box section stringers,

permitting increased span length-30 feet as compared to 20 feetfor wood-as well as greater durability and simplicity. Consider­able care was needed in handling the units weighing in at aboutJ2 tons each.

Severalguests from other Dep artments knew Regand worked with him in the Dep artmentof Public Works in the early 1930's. Apresentation of gifts was made in theoffice of the Minister. He has servedcontinuously with the Department sincehis appointment May 22, 1930, except forleave of absence to serve in the SecondWorld War. Reg was active in the Vic­toria Symphony Orchestra as a cellist,and his hobbies are gardening, photog­raphy, and stamp collecting.

ter , une ,at Victoria. Jack was amember of the RCAF from March 1943to October 1945. In March 1949 hejoined the Department of Lands, Fore sts,and Water Resources at Kamloops andstayed until March 1952, when he left togo into business for him self. In Novem­ber 1959 he joined the Department ofHighw ays Regional staff at Kamloops asMechanical Superintendent 3, and waspromoted to Mechanical Superintendent5 in April 1963. Later that year hetran sferred to Victoria as Superintendentof Equipment where he remained in thisposition until his early retirement.

HAROLD DEWARhas retired after 23years' service with theDepartment. Haroldspent a good deal oftime in the northernpart of the Provinceat Pouce Coupe and

Fort St. John, before coming to Nanaimo.John Morris, District Superintendent, pre­sented him with a gift and meritoriousservice scroll.

Back on the jobafter a brief retire­ment is HARRYSCHULTZ, Yardman,Vanderhoof District.Harry worked on acasual basis with theDepartment from

1940 to 1950, became a permanent truck­driver until April 1964, when he tookover the duties of Yardman.

In 1969 he retired to his farm, but inthe summers of 1970 and 1971 he wasback as a Labourer. In February 1972the Yardman position became vacant andHarry was happy to return to his oldposition.

The second annual /ishing derby, Kam­loops District, was held recently at PaulLake. Ferry Superintendent Ted Blanchardwith his wife, Dorothy, who earlier thisyear christened the Kulleet, one of threenew inter-island ferries at the launchingin North Vancouver. A flying holiday across Canada was the experience of L. D.(Doug) Perkins, Regional Construction Engineer, Headquarters,Victoria, and his wife, Phyllis, in June. The Sth Annual "Fun" Golf Tournament for Region 3 was hosted bythe Rossland District this year on June 17. Golfers from New Den­ver, Nelson, Golden, Revelstoke, and K amloops participated. An en­ioyable day was had by all, especially the top winners, Regional Con­struction Engineer, Merle Sprou le, Mrs. H . J. Ke lsall, and Mrs. K. E.Dyson.
