*FROM OUR LEADERSHIP*

Commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation with a Tour of the LSTC Rare Book Collection

One way to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation is to schedule a tour of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC, 1100 E. 55th St., Chicago, IL 60615) rare book collection for a group from your congregation.

This collection features original copies of many of Luther’s most important writings (95 theses, Diet of Worms, Freedom of a Christian,

1522 translation of the NT, etc.) Tours take about 90 minutes and are free. To learn more

or to schedule a tour, contact Ralph Klein, curator of rare books ([email protected]) or call (773-238-1856).

During this time until we call our new pastor, we have

arranged for a supply pastor to be available each Sunday morning

for Word and Sacrament. Yet, you may be in need of pastoral care

at other times. If you have a special need for a pastor, please

contact one of our sister ELCA churches in Elgin:

Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 847-741-8434 (Pastor Carol

Book),

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 847-742-2025 (Pastor Jeff

Mikyska),

Zion Lutheran Church, 847-888-2882 (Pastor David Daubert)

Pastor Tolzmann, ESP (Extended Supply Pastor)

From Pastor Tolzmann First off, it is a privilege to serve our Lord again through

worship leadership at Christ the Lord. We give thanks to the Lord for all who have continued to serve faithfully during the two years we have been without a permanent pastor. Thank you also to all who have been faithful in worship and generous in financial support for our mission and ministry. Of course, worship participation in the summer goes down for most congregations. In case you missed some worship services, below are thoughts from each of my summer sermons.

1. How many times have we thought, “Why me, there are so many others more capable?” Welcome to discipleship.

2. Feeling worthless? Think of the sparrows and the cross; we are worth enough for Jesus to live and die for.

3. I only raised one person from the dead (you had to be present to hear the whole story).

4. As someone said, “God doesn’t have much trouble with enemies; it’s his friends who give God fits.”

5. Many Christians have a “personal trainer” approach to God - as long as they are taken care of, let the others fend for themselves.

6. What we are not willing to give up, says much about what our gods are.

7. We have two questions to answer: What am I doing here and what is the last thing I want to do, that God is calling me to do?

8. Most congregations are made of fairly similar persons, thus we become sort of a gated community for those like us. Note, however, that there is no gate to enter this place.

God’s Work Our Hands Meet with the other three

Elgin ELCA churches at CTL for “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday on September 10, 12:30 p.m. This is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. This year we will meet, along with other area churches, to choose places/projects to serve in our community. Our meeting will be on September 10 at 12:30 p.m. (lunch) here at Christ the Lord Lutheran Church. There is a signup sheet in the narthex for anyone who wants to participate in this most special event.

Website Information Anyone looking for current phone and address information

on members may appreciate knowing about this new improvement. The church directory is now located on the Members page of the website at http://ctlelgin.org/#/for-members. The most recent edition posted is through August 18, 2017.

Kid’s Hope USA School has started! How is that possible? Didn't we just

have the end of the year KH party? Oh my, how time flies. Six CTL mentors will return to Hillcrest in the first few weeks of September to greet their returning students. One mentor who had to take some time off and two new mentors who were trained in August will meet their children as soon as signed permission forms have been returned to the school. The principal and staff at Hillcrest are overjoyed that more children will be helped, thanks to these new mentors. Three other potential mentors took the training at CTL on Sat., Aug. 12. Hopefully, they will make the commitment and begin mentoring within the next year.

At this time we are in need of a prayer partner for one of our new mentors. A prayer partner prays for one mentor and mentee during the time they are meeting together. The mentor

Page 17: The Bridge - storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/christthelordlutheranchurch/documents/201… · Spring Hill Mall) Tue Sep 05 9:00 AM Needles & Pins Tue Sep 05 7:00 PM

reports to the prayer partner on progress or concerns. The relationship between mentor, mentee and prayer partner has been a huge factor in the success of the KH mentoring program. If being a prayer partner or a mentor is something you feel you would like to do, call Jeanne Tolzmann for more information.

Kids Hope USA - One Church, Once School, One Mentor, One Child, One hour a week. Sounds simple, doesn't it? It works and it's a wonderful gift that we can give some very special at risk children. Join us!

July Financial Report Gifts Given Gifts Expected Difference

June $14,746 $14,143 +$603

Year-to-date $104,208 $100,882 +$3,326

Gifts Received $104,208 Expenses $75,548 +$28,660

It is great to be over budget in income! That would not be

possible without each and every offering received. It is so important to the life of our church to keep having these positive months. Matthew says in chapter 16, verse 21, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

The above-mentioned income information does not include the AIM Appeal; our three-year pledge total is now $91,160! We have already received $31,507.51 as of July 31! Thank you so much for your response to this important fund! We should be seeing some of these important projects happening soon.

Meeting to Prepare for Craft Show Each year hundreds of people attend our annual Craft

Show, a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity, and there is a lot to

do to make the show run smoothly. If you would like to know what

goes into preparing for the show and how you can help, plan on

joining us at church on Sat., Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. Call Carol Earsley

at 847-695-0833 for more information.

Behind the Milkweed There is a story behind the statement "Ask us about our

milkweed." on the electronic sign in front of our church. A master gardener and environmentalist from the congregation cautioned everyone to leave the milkweed alone because there were monarch eggs and tiny caterpillars on the leaves. Her warnings and advice were heeded and suddenly many individuals and families became foster parents to monarch eggs and caterpillars. More and more CTL members become foster parents every week! The itsy bitsy eggs hatch and turn into tiny caterpillars. The very hungry growing caterpillars must appreciate the vast number of milkweed leaves that are harvested from the giant milkweed plants in the church parking lot just so there will be plenty of food. Some people might think we should take better care of our property and chop down the weeds. Others will know and approve of our efforts to save as many monarchs as possible. We are doing what we can to protect these beautiful creations of our wonderful God.

Social Ministry News Love Elgin Day: Love Elgin Day is coming on Sat., Sept.

30. It is a community-wide event run by the downtown churches. On that day, free clothing, food, and services are provided for families that need them. CTL is joining with other Elgin churches to provide fall and winter clothing and shoes (clean and in good condition), nonperishable food, personal care items, and Christian books. If you have any of these items to donate, please leave them in or near the designated box in the Narthex or in the Caring Cube. The deadline for donations is Sun., Sept. 24.

CROP Hunger Walk and Bake Sale: The Elgin CROP Hunger Walk is scheduled for Sun., Oct. 15. It is a 5K walk. Sign-in will be at 1:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Plaza; step-off, at 2:00 p.m. Prior to the walk there will be an all cookie bake sale at CTL on Sun., Oct. 8, before and after church. All proceeds from the bake sale will be donated to CROP. CROP distributes some of

these funds to local food banks; the remainder will be used for food, water, and disaster relief where needed in our country and internationally.

Thanksgiving Food Baskets: Before the Thanksgiving holiday, CTL gathers baskets of nonperishable food to be delivered to needy families in the U-46 school area. The recipient families are selected by the school social workers who oversee the education of homeless students. Sign-up for food donations will begin Sun., Oct. 22. Donations may be brought to CTL any time after that date and until the deadline.

Mitten Tree: A tree will be set up in the narthex early in November to collect mittens, gloves, and scarves for people who do not have them. Donations are needed for people of all ages. These items are then distributed regularly to schools, the Crisis Center, PADS, and food pantries. The tree will be available for donations from November through January.

White Gifts: The providing of White Gifts at Christmas is a long held tradition at CTL. Children in the U-46 school district are selected by their social workers because of family needs. The children are interviewed and a list of three wishes is prepared for each child. We choose a child, buy a gift from the list ($30 limit per child), wrap the gift in white paper, and bring the gift to CTL to be delivered to the child. White Gift sign-ups will begin on Sun., Nov. 25.

churches will gather in the afternoon at St. Mary’s Church for a joint prayer service. This is part of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Such services are being held throughout our country and the world.

Intergenerational Events Watch the bulletin, the Bridge and Blasts for information

about when the Intergenerational Events will resume, the dates and the topics. Children of all ages are welcome! That means every person who walks through the door at CTL.

Protecting Our Children On Sun., Sep. 17, during the children's sermon, children

and adults alike will be treated to a presentation of CTL's child protection policy. The presenter will be Jeanne Tolzmann and her puppet friends. During this time, the congregation will learn how CTL keeps the children who attend our church's events safe. After church, the Protecting Our Children document will be available for all interested people to take home and read and there will also be Acknowledgment sheets to be signed and turned in to be kept on file. All people who work with CTL's children and youth, including in the education, nursery and music programs, need to have signed an Acknowledgment sheet each year.

Bound and Ungagged Bound and Ungagged, a book club, is reading "The Turner

House" by Angela Flournay for Sat., Sept. 2 meeting. For Sat., Oct. 7, we will read "The Children Act" by Ian McEwan, for Sat., Nov. 11 (date change due to craft show), we will be reading “The Book That Matters Most: A Novel” by Ann Hood and for Sat., Dec. 2 we will be reading "Lowcountry Christmas" by Mary Alice Monroe. We meet at 8:00 a.m. at Colonial Cafe on McLean Blvd. Come join us for some great fellowship, a delicious breakfast and some wonderful discussion about the books that we read. If you have any questions or would like to suggest a book that you think the book club would enjoy reading please contact Carol Helmers.

Volunteer Help Wanted (on the technical side of things at CTL).

Do you have some specialized skills CTL needs? You can make an important contribution to the life of the church by volunteering your time and abilities. Right now, we’re looking for folks to take on these responsibilities as part of a team.

Sunday Morning Sound Board Technician If you have ever run a sound system – or wanted to learn how – here is your chance! This ministry lets everyone hear what is going on in worship! You will be responsible for the microphones and sound levels during the service. We would like to add more people to this team so the time commitment is less of a burden on everyone.

Worship Service Projection This team uses PowerPoint to project what the congregation needs to participate in the worship service, and creates graphic design to increase the visual appeal. The team also incorporates artwork and video that helps communicate the message. We would like to add more people to this team so the time commitment is less of a burden on everyone.

Let the church office or the congregation council know if you’re interested in volunteering, or hearing more about any of these ministries. The first of these is accountable to the E-team. The other is accountable to Worship, Music and the Arts.
