Bewdley Twinning AssociationBewdley Twinning Association

This year has been a great year for anniversaries and celebrations in the UK and Bewdley hashad its share.

Through August and September Bewdley Museum held an exhibition featuring the links be-tween a history of the Free French at Ribbesford House, the shared relationship between Be-wdley and its TwinTown Fort Mahon Plage, in Picardy, France and the formation of BewdleyTwinning Association. 2012 celebrates 70 years of history at Ribbesford, 50 years of towntwinning and 25 years of the BewdleyTwinning Association.

Over the last weekend of September, there was a significant gathering to recognise these an-niversaries. From Paris we were joined by a small party representing the Association of the“Cadet de la France Libre”. Two of the party, Rene Marbot and Rene Lemoine, were actuallystationed at Ribbesford in the 1940’s, each with a vast hoard of memories; they were accom-panied by the Secretary of their Association M Serge Arvengas. From Fort Mahon Plage camea delegation of 30 people, hosted by members of ourTwinning Association.

Celebrations were held in brilliant sunshine on Saturday the 29th ofSeptember in the Museum courtyard. Fort Mahon’s Chairman of theCommittee de Jumelage had collected from the Museum of Charles DeGaulle, Paris, original panels supporting the history of events atRibbesford and these supplemented the exhibition for the weekend.

The Deputy Lord Lietenant ofWorcestershire, Colonel Patrick Holcroft,in company with our Mayor, Councillor John Latham and our MP, MarkGarnier, were also present and, following speeches, everyone was invitedto enjoy the museum and the exhibition.

Later in the day a simple and dignified act of Remembrance was held atRibbesford House, courtesy of Columb and Merryn Howell, where wreaths were laid.French visitors were also able to inspect artefacts from the time of the French being sta-tioned at Ribbesford that have remained in the archives. We learnt from Rene Marbot at firsthand that the rumour of French cadets using the weather vane on St Leonard’s churchsteeple for target practice was not a rumour but an established fact.Stuart Williams

Not one of the year’s best months, is November; cold, wet, grey and thestart of another Bewdley winter. Let’s call in a few good memories fromlast month to help get through it. Here’s my selection:

1. Going into Jubilee Gardens and seeing a tree dressed in a flamboyantmulticoloured bodystocking.

2. Festival Sunday, walking a visitor up a crowded Load Street past morrisdancers, apple pressers and market stalls of local food and hearing himsay “What a lovely place!”.

3.Watching a sideways duck drifting in stately fashion downriver andbumping into another duck it hadn’t noticed.

4.A really fantastic rainbow stretching from one side of the sky right over to the other.

5. Laughing myself silly in Ian MacMillan’s talk during the festival …. And plenty more goodmemories if I try.

Having just spent what seemed like half a millennium trying to sort out my new mobilephone, then getting a parking ticket for my pains, I really needed to write that so that I couldremember why I still got up this morning. Then Gary came round with the photos from theOpenViews day and I had a lovely time looking at them. What a clever lot you all are.

And finally…… we all sat round the other day choosing the photos for this years’ Bridgecalendar. You’re going to love them; you might actually be in one of them! And that remindsme: I want to persuade Gary to take a more flattering one of me for this page. One thatmakes me look more like my 26-year-old self.

Community NewsBiographies are very popular with Bewdleypeople, be it historical figures, politicians orthose from the world of entertainment. Many borrowers work their way through ourbiography section. It's reassuring when youfind out that those in the public eye havehuman failings after all; occasionally you discover something that makes your hair

stand on end. Edwina Currie and John Major – who saw that one coming?

Just to make things awkward though, not all of our biographies are in this section. Many appear in the non-fiction section in the appropriate subject area (music, entertainment, sport) and if you're not careful you can miss out on some good reads. Have a look next timeyou're in, as gradually all the biographies are going to be absorbed into the Dewey system.

A few recommendations to get you going:

Nicky Haslam's Redeeming Features

Rupert Everett's Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins

Paul O'Grady's At My Mother's Knee and The Devil Rides Out (a personal favourite)

Happy rummaging!

Down at the Kemp ShopWell, that was a summer to remember, but at least wesold a lot of umbrellas!

It’s Friday and J and her sister come in for a browse. J works in Bewdley but her sister isfrom “out of town.” Boy - when they come do they spend! J is easily led and her sisterkeeps finding clothes for her to try and explaining how she couldn’t possibly do without anyof the fifteen garments she has tried on!

Pete is next; he’s a real local, born and bred in Bewdley. What hedoesn’t know isn’t worth worrying about. Now, I think he is ex- forces as his shoes positively sparkle and you can see yourreflection in them. He pops in two or three times a week justto make sure all is well at KEMP and to gossip with the Volunteers and me of course!

Joan comes in on Saturdays. She has the most beautiful gardenand she holds open days for the NGS. Her garden is her passionand she can identify any plant or weed you care to challenge heron.

Now that you’ve had an overview of some of our customers. I shall let you in next on a fewsecrets regarding my Volunteers!

And did those feet…?Do you have a pair of shoes that have a

story attached to them?

If so then I would like to hear from you.

I am working with a team of people to create an exhibition of shoes and stories from peopleconnected with Bewdley and the surrounding area.

They might be regular shoes or they might be trainers, sandals, boots, brogues, ballet shoesor some other footwear;

they might belong to you or someone else;

but the important thing is that they are connected to a story or an experience, which is important to you (or whoever was wearing the shoes).

We will take great care of the shoes and will of course return them.

The exhibition will be in Bewdley in 2013 – dates yet to be finalised.

The shoes that are used will be selected to show the different circumstances and life of theowners and will include a variety of people. You can phone me on 01299 402275 or emailme: [email protected]

Safari Park helps makes a dream come true

Wendy Jackson, Public Relations Officer at The West MidlandsSafari Park, was intrigued to receive a call from a millinerwanting to photograph her hats at the park. Everything became clear when Caroline explained that she had

created a hat collection inspired by African animals. Bob Lawrence gave permission for Caroline to hold a fashion shoot at the park, and Caroline asked friends to model her hats.

“Seeing some of the world’s most majestic animals with people wearing my hats was a trulyamazing experience.”, she said.

Caroline is donating 12% from the sale of her Wild Collection hats to the Safari Park’sNamibian Wildlife Conservation Trust.

TThhee BBeewwddlleeyy YYoouutthh FFeessttiivvaall 22001122The Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre opened the Bewdley Youth Festival 2012 withan exhibition that shared history, art and poetry. The work was created by KS3 learners aspart of The School Heritage Project, which was supported by the Bewdley Civic Society.

The main aim of the project was to encourage young people to develop an interest in thetown and its future, and appreciate its heritage and its environment. Learners used theleaflets, The Lost Industries of Bewdley* and The River Severn in the Bewdley Area ** created by two local historians, who are also members of the society, as starting points. In additionto the leaflets, the main resources used were photographs from the collections of Ken Hobson, TheBewdley Museum and publications by the Bewdley His-torical Research Group.

Staff at the school co-ordinated the project with KS3learners. In the English Department, learners ex-pressed their ideas about the industrial heritage of the town, the changes that have takenplace and the constancy of the River Severn, all through poetry.

The Art Department worked with learners to produce mixed media 3D pieces depictingtheir vision of Bewdley, its history and its future. Heather Flack, a local historian, and Bar-bara Longmore, both from the Civic Society, worked with the History Department, wherelearners researched historical aspects of Bewdley.

Bewdley Civic Society would like to congratulate the learners from the school, who haveworked hard to make this project a success.

During the Youth Festival, learners from across the school also participated in a variety ofdifferent events, which included an art competition, photography exhibition and music concert.

During the Festival Art Competition, Reuben Howles, a Year 8 learner, was awarded firstprize for his outstanding three- dimensional piece depicting aspects of Bewdley from thepast, and his vision of the town in the future! Will Roff, Bethany Carter, Chloe Mulders andBeth Knowles who are also in Year 8, were highly commended for their inspirational artwork. The artwork was judged by local artist Kate Wigglesworth.

Harvest Fair

Harvest Fair Soup TrailWhat a brilliant idea and what a lot of fun! Westarted at the Woodcolliers, then on to Grannystap, into the High Street for a sneak preview into Po-modoro’s in the Bailiff ’s House, then across the roadto Clementine’s and on to the Little Packhorse. Wedetoured into the Jubilee Gardens to see what wasgoing on there as part of the Harvest Fair, then outonto Severnside for the two stalls representing theHop Pole and Emma Passey’s Paisley Catering, finallyending up in the Mug House, where we met peoplejust starting out and doing it the other way round.

Everywhere there was a warm welcome as well asinteresting tasty soups – vegetable in several guises, fish, two lots of mushrooms and a very interestingpear, courgette and ginger. We chatted with peoplewe knew and those we didn’t and thoroughly en-joyed ourselves. Bewdley was at its best in the au-tumn sunshine and buzzing with people and activity. How lucky we are to live here.

The announcement of the winner was made outsidethe Guildhall in yet more lovely sunshine the following day, while the Local Produce Market wasgoing on and Morris Dancers entertained everyone. The prize went to Clementines, to their obvious de-light, but all eight were winners, for taking part andreminding us of how lucky we are in Bewdley tohave such a range of eateries with friendly staff, goodfood and great buildings.

Cards for Good Causes(Multi-charity Christmas Card shop)

Bewdley Library7 Nov - 20 Dec

OpenMon, Wed-Fri 10.00 am - 4.30 pm

Sat 9.30 am - 1 pmWe can’t do it without you!

Times are hard this year, and more so for those needing help from the 100s of Charities selling

Christmas Cards each year. If you buy Christmas Cards, do consider Charity Cards. Your money will work twice as hard. ‘Cards for Good Causes’ have 33 Charities

represented in our temporary shop in Bewdley Library this year. CFGC will return to these charities 79p in the £1. We also have small gifts, paper and ribbons etc.

Do come in, if only to browse - we’d love to see you. NB: We no longer supply plastic bags.

Bewdley Games MakerI was lucky enough to be one of the Games Makerson the Mall last month for the Olympic athletes’ parade. The atmosphere was very special again andwe were entertained prior to the parade passing.Almost opposite was the choir from the openingceremony and they sung their hearts out for mostof the time we were waiting. It was a bit like a miniopening ceremony, because there were also peoplewith the hats with lights on, drummers and nurses.

Although we didn't get to be outside BuckinghamPalace, we could see a big screen and what wasgoing on. Eddie Izzard, who has worked very hardwith the Games Makers before and during theOlympics, was going up and down the Mall 'high fiving' as he went.

After arriving in London in the morning,we went to London Bridge to photograph theParalympic symbols hanging from it. Sitting opposite us on the tube was an athlete on theway to the parade. She was a previous winner of the BBC Sports Personality of the Yearand a silver medalist this time around. It was none other then Zara Phillips. Not somebody you see on the tube every day.

Tails of a Veterinary Practicelife at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat.

I usually enjoy human celebrations and often come downstairs to joinin. Recently some of my humans have had birthdays and last week Hannah brought in her baby daughter for me to see.

However, not all human celebrations are fun for animals and one in particular is very unwelcome. I hate Bonfire Night and find all theflashes and bangs really scary. Luckily my humans are very kind and

make sure that I am safe inside and well away from the nasty fireworks. Not all animals are so fortunate and often vets have to treat animals that have been badlyinjured by bonfires and fireworks.

Keeping your animals safe in and around November 5th is important, because we get sofrightened and stressed. Try to keep us calm and relaxed, but take care when handling us;a human I know had a serious bite on his finger when he picked up his cat just as a firework went off!

Some of my animal friends get so stressed with fireworks that they need help to keepcalm. If you think that your dog or cat might get very stressed, then it is possible to get aplug-in or tablets that can help them.

I hope that all you humans enjoy Bonfire Night, but remember we hate it. so please lookafter us.

More again from me next month. Gavin.

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 1ST OCTOBER 2012

Christmas LightsCouncillors agreed to go ahead with the purchase of some replacement feature lights forSevernside South. Like those that were purchased for Load Street a couple of years ago theywould be more energy efficient and enable the Council to make some savings on its electricity bill. It was agreed that the lights on the Christmas Tree by St Annes Church shouldalso be replaced by more modern and energy efficient ones.

Parish GamesThe Council had received a letter from the District Council to say that the old format of theParish Games, which had been suspended this year on account the clash with the Olympics, would not continue in 2013 and beyond. Instead there was talk of an inter-parish quiz beingarranged rather than a series of individual games. Councillors were disappointed at the newsbut awaited more details.

Civic AwardsJust a reminder that 30th November is the closing date for anyone to nominate a worthy individual for a Civic Award. The scheme which has been in place for over ten years is to reward people with the honour (and a medal) who have given outstanding service to thelocal community in Bewdley/Wribbenhall.

Trees at Anton Close and Campion Way WribbenhallThe Planning Committee agreed following a site meeting with residents and the DistrictCouncil’s Arboricultural Officer that they would look more favourably on applications thatrelated to the removal or management of this old avenue of trees given there were concernsas to the size of the trees and the risk of branches falling off suddenly and causing injuries. This would be subject to replacement trees being planted of a size more suitable for the estate.

Phone Mast on A456 Roundabout at Catchems EndThe Planning Committee also heard of a proposal by one of the phone operators to install a30 metre high phone mast next to the Safari Park by the roundabout. Councillors questioned the height which they felt would be obtrusive at the “gateway” to the town.

Dear Editor,

Your thoughts about David Glenn’s contribution to theBridge magazine in the last edition made me think of all hisother work in the Town.

As a Director of Bewdley Development Trust over the last 2 years, his enthusiasm, passionand skills did so much to contribute to the work of the Trust.

In particular, David was instrumental in shaping the recently re-designed Bewdley websiteand providing a professional approach to publicising the Local Produce Market and manyother events in the town.

He contributed a great deal and is missed by all of us who worked with him.

Yours sincerelyRobert SmithChairman Bewdley Development Trust

NN oo vv ee mm bb ee rr ii nn tt hh ee FF oo rr ee ss ttNN oo vv ee mm bb ee rr ii nn tt hh ee FF oo rr ee ss ttAt Uncllys Farm we get a little glow of satisfaction from seeing our new log store fullof seasoned firewood. We know we are readyto keep the kitchen range and the Ruskin Stu-dio stove burning through the cold, darkmonths.

Like us, the forest wildlife is preparing for thewinter, following instinctive seasonal behaviourto survive the hard times ahead. Moles areseldom seen in person but in the autumnspend time collecting dry grass and leaves fortheir sleeping chambers underground. Theypatrol their tunnel network looking forworms and other soil invertebrates, includinggarden pests such as cockchafer and carrot flylarvae. They dig with their powerful, heavy-clawed forepaws, pushing the soil behind them, while bracing themselves against the walls ofthe tunnel with their hind limbs. When a goodpile of soil has accumulated. the mole turnsand pushes it back along the tunnel to a shaftleading to the surface, creating the familiarmole hill. The shallow, linear tunnels, whichyou sometimes see as slightly raised ridges ofsoil, could be a sign of moles colonising newareas. The ground seldom freezes, so molescan continue to feed through the winter, mainly on worms, which they often store un-

derground in large numbers.

Please forgive me for mentioning it in Novem-ber, but the time is coming when the Discov-ery Centre will be decorated with aromatic green boughs and fairy lights, Charliethe Deer will wear his holly crown, andschoolchildren will be visiting the forest indroves to find out what happens to thewildlife in winter. Our celebration of theseason is open to all members of the publicthis year at the Wyre Days of Christmasthrough the weekends of December at theCommunity Discovery Centre. As well as of-fering some very fine specimens of Norwayspruce and Noble fir as Christmas trees, there will be decoration workshops for adultsand children over 8 (on 8th December only),local producers’ stalls and a visit to Father Christ-mas’s forest cabin!

Please call the Recreation Team on01905 533839 for more information or

to book for the workshops.

Meanwhile, if you would like to get as far awayfrom such things as possible, or even spendsome time creating home made gifts forfriends and family, you’ll be very welcome tocome and share the Ruskin Studio at UncllysFarm on Mellow Mondays. For a small chargeof £5 (drinks included) you will be able to usethe studio as a base to sit and spin, paint, knit,or whatever your chosen craft, from 9.30amto 4.30pm.
