Did you know? The “Casoar Cap” at Bewdley Museum hasbeen selected out of a total of ten itemschosen to tell the history of Worcester-shire and Herefordshire and their place inthe world. It is included in the wider ‘AHistory of the World’ project, formed outof a partnership between the BBC, theBritish Museum and 350 museums and in-stitutions across the country. This cap was presented to Bewdley Mu-seum by L’Amicale des Cadets de la FranceLibre in 1999, in a ceremony recognisingthe role the town played in assisting theFrench Resistance. In 1940, after the

armistice of France with Germany, General de Gaulle created a military training academy, which was housed at Ribbesford House. The ‘Casoar Cap’ represents an important part in Bewdley’s history. It was presented to themuseum to recognise the friendships that formed between the French cadets and the com-munity. It is a bond, which still lasts to this day.The museum opens for the 2010 season on 2nd April, the Cap can be seen in the ‘History ofBewdley Gallery’. In the meantime to find out more, take a look at ‘The Collections’ pagehttp://www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/cms/leisure-and-culture/museums-and-galleries.aspx

We didn’t have any correct guesses for last month’sphoto.I’m not sure whether to be relieved or offended!

Where are they now?

Do you have anold photo of your-self which whichwe could use in Where are they now - then just let us know

Page 3: The Bridge - March 2010

This month you will see that we have devoted space and pictures to theworks that have taken over the town since January. Its had a big impacton Bewdley and affected us all in one way or another, and mostly not in agood way! I’ve been impressed, though, by the grin-and-bear-it attitude ofmost of the people I’ve talked to, who usually say something like, “Well, ifwe want our water to come out of our taps and not out of cracks in theroad, we’ve got to let them get on with it”. But yes, its had a big effect ontrade, and on those people who have to pass through the town to work, and I’m sure we’ll all breathe a sigh of relief when it’s finished. In themeantime I think we should all back the Bewdley traders and continue to use our localshops.

Meanwhile, the first tentative signs of spring poke out their nervous noses round the town. The shop windows come over all yellow, and people shed their thickest coats and undo theodd button. The sun has a bit of warmth in it, and the tourists start coming to see us. Oh,and the news from Florencegate, aka next door’s hen house, is that she’s co-opted a partnerin crime, and, in spite of having a few flight feathers clipped, she and her bestest new friendDorothy are making furtive bids for freedom. I fully expect to see two hens hurtling over myfence on a motorbike any day now.

You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home tofind and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work isover, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle.Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expandyour horizons?

If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings sosee if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we caneven arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for aninformal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts- just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like tobe able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you.

A Fishy Taleby Richard Perrin

The best swimming hole in the river Severn at Bewdley inthe 1950s was near Blackstone rock about a mile downstream from Bewdley Bridge. There was a nice sandybeach on the Ribbesford bank, which shelved down gradually into deeper water (alas it is no longer there). In

the summer the flow was smooth and gentle. On the opposite bank is the Rock; a sheer cliffof red sandstone sixty feet high, which plunges straight down into deep water, very deep. 32feet. I have plumbed it.

The place had a reputation for drownings and while this had become exaggerated I do remember one or two fatalities being reported there over the years. One day there was aletter to the editor in the Kidderminster Times putting forward a theory for the tragedies. The writer explained that a giant pike lived in an underwater cave under the cliff at Blackstone. When a swimmer ventured too far into the middle of the river, the pike swamout and pulled the unfortunate person under the water and carried him into his lair. The letter writer was adamant. He had seen the pike lurking in the water. Not only that, hehad seen the fish jumping and splashing, sending great waves across the river. He went on toexplain that the drowned bodies, when pulled from the water, showed no teeth marks, because the great pike pulled the swimmers under by his swimming trunks (woollen in thosedays). To be Continued...

Citizens Advice Bureauofficially opened the doors on the new bureau in Bewdley.John Gordon the Chair of the Wyre ForestCAB said they had been searching foryears to find the right town centre location with disabled access and StGeorges Hall on the Load Street car parkwas a real gem of a find. The bureau hastwo interview rooms both accessible forwheelchairs and a reception waiting area.Open every Thursday morning for generaladvice without prior appointment 10.00am–1pm. Bewdley Horticultural SocietyMarch: reducing the load, maybe! Now that winter’s hopefully on its way out, it’s time to make astart and there are a thousand and one things to get going.

So, as we’re looking at projects at present, let’s have a go atpruning. As there has been quite a lot of snow that has lainaround, there will be a need to lightly prune shrubs to removeboth snow and frost damage. Prune back to healthy, clean shrubgrowth and do this before other pruning is undertaken. Pruninghas three main functions, which, as previously mentioned, are theremoval of dead, damaged or diseased material, the control of

growth and finally one of improved growth for flower or fruit.

All cuts have to be clean and not cause damage to the outer layer of cells that will healwounds. Prune just above a node making the cut start opposite the bud and slanting so thatit ends above the bud. Buds should be pointing away from the body of the plant toencourage growth away from the centre. Hard pruning, often almost back to ground levelwill stimulate the root system into producing new and vigorous growth. A light pruning, thatis reducing last year’s lateral growth and headers before active growth in this season, willencourage better fruit or flower. Don’t forget that active growth makes demands on theplant, so don’t forget to feed and mulch where needed.

Bewdley LibraryOn Mothering Sunday we show our appreciation of everything thatmothers do for us.With memories of big bonuses and expenses rows fresh in the mind, it’sa puzzle that so many people accept a job working twenty four hours aday, seven days a week with no pay, no holiday, no cash bonuses and noprospect of retirement. If you’re lucky you’ll get the occasional ‘Thankyou’.Our ‘Parents and Carers’ section contains books on parenting from be-

fore birth to school age; about feeding, behaviour, how to talk to your child, even what to callhim/her (if you need any help with that). If you don’t have a parenting problem, or, like me, your problem isn’t in any of the books, whynot grab something for yourself? We’ve got everything from quick reads to classics, as well asbooks on aromatherapy, yoga and other pleasant ways to get some much needed relaxation. And don’t forget the magazine swap box! When I was a stay-at-home parent, for me the library was a bit like Tiffany’s; nothing bad everhappened to me in there!

Traidcraft sales figures for 2009 here in Bewdley were just over £27,500, which although excellent, were nearly £2,300 down on last year and the lowest for some time. So come ongood Bewdley folk, let’s see if we can boost them back up again.

Where better to start than purchasing from the wonderful array of goodies featured in theTraidcraft Spring/Summer Catalogue, now available from me or the stall in St Anne’s Church.Already people are commenting on how bright and cheerful the range is, so order soon orpop into St Anne’s Church before lines sell out. There’s everything from jewellery and accessories, children’s games, gardening gifts, T-shirts, household items and gifts for men tothe usual foodstuffs and essentials like fairly traded tea and coffee, as well as beautiful handmade cards

Traidcraft works with farmers and craft workers across Africa, Asia and South America. Thisyear sees the introduction of a new producer group, African Heritage from Kenya. JosphatOmundi is a jewellery maker for African Heritage. He said: “I like working here because I get some money for myself and my family. I assist my parents because they are not able topay school fees for my brothers and sisters.” Let’s help Josphat and so many more with our purchases.

Hope to see you shopping in St Anne’s soon! Thank you.

The Mulberry restaurant is tucked away just off Load Street in Bewdleyby the entrance to the George Hotel, with an entrance also from the carpark via The Farm shop. The building was a silk warehouse built in the16th century with original brick/stone fireplace, and crammed with brassjugs, and other hollowware hanging from every beam, and crook andcranny that could be found. The tables have highly patterned table cloths, and mix match cutlery and china. Being a small owner/chef restaurant, there is a massive menu, but what quality and care to attention is received to every dish! You may have thought you were dining at some Michelin starred establishment. The customary soup ofthe day was on the menu, with freshly baked bread followed by BakedMushroom with garlic & shallot in a stilton sauce, Fish pie, or Griddledpineapple with fruit in a mascarpone sauce - all worth their wait, servedpiping hot, well presented.

The main courses were Lamb shank in honey, roasted parsnips with garlic and rosemary gravy, or Duck, with sweet potato and caramelisedpear in port sauce, but for me the Chicken, with cranberry and thymestuffing in puff pastry with a red wine sauce, was the meal of the night. The chicken was cooked to perfection, as you would have expected. Also available was Paupiettes of sole in a white wine and chive sauce andSalmon with red pepper and tomato chutney wrapped in filo pastry.

The cheese course and sweets were served from the trolley, and consisted of fresh strawberries, cheesecakes, trifles, etc, etc, all very tasty. The restaurant is unlicensed so take your own drinks, or soft drinks areavailable there. A beautiful place to eat, but book a table.

Junior RowingJunior Rowing

Ten or eleven years old is about the lower age limit for rowing, and there are several flourishing junior groups at the club. It is equally popular with boys and girls, and there isa good social life too! Youngsters all start by sculling (rowing with an oar in each hand). This is to make sure that the work is evenly distributed on the right and left side of thebody. (Sweep-oar rowing where you are in charge of one larger oar and the movement ismore onesided does not begin until around 16 years old.)

New scullers all begin in ‘Yellow boats’- bright, stable plastic craft, which are good forlearning the basics. The progression is then into a training single scull (one person) and ul-timately onto a fine single scull, or double or quad.

The juniors race in their own age group in Regattas, which are both competitive and so-ciable events! After what has felt like a long winter I know of more than one junior rowerwho is looking forward to light evenings and more time on the water!

I’ve just been hearing on the radio that spring isstarting on average 11 days earlier than it did 30years ago. This means that natural events suchas the spawning of frogs and toads are happen-ing earlier in the year. This is not a good thing if,as the report suggested, parts of the food chainare responding faster than others, in which casefoods that are depended on may not be aroundat the time they are most needed.

Local naturalists have been involved in monitoring such things for many years. For instance the Wyre Forest Study Group’sfrogspawn survey checks ponds large and smallthroughout the forest to find out how manyclumps of spawn appear each year and roughlywhen. You can become involved with similar ex-ercises by registering with Nature’s Calendar, acampaign run by the Woodland Trust. (Seewww.naturescalendar.org.uk.) You can recordyour own observations of bud burst and flowering in plants and the first appearances orbreeding behaviour of animals.

So keep an eye and an ear open for signs of spring as you wander in the forest this month. If I’ve got it right, you should be able to hear Goldcrests and Siskins singing, while others suchas Blackbirds, Mistle Thrushes and Song Thrushes start to build their nests. On warm dayssome of the cold-blooded inhabitants of the woods – Wood Ants, Adders, Grass Snakes andSlow Worms – should emerge from hibernation. Primroses, Celandines and Speedwells willbe flowering and “pussy willow” buds appear on Sallow trees.

On a completely different subject, I’m afraid that our Deer Watch event that was to be on13th March has had to be cancelled. The reason is bovine TB, which is widespread in thisarea not only in cattle but also in wild animals such as badgers and deer. The greatest risk ofspreading the disease from one species to another occurs if they share feeding areas, and forthis reason the Wildlife Ranger, Phil Rudlin, cannot follow the usual practice of putting outsugar beet to attract deer to the hide. (You didn’t realise we cheated, did you?) The Teme Val-ley is one of the areas where the government (DEFRA) will be carrying out a pilot scheme toinoculate badgers against TB – a welcome move away from talk of a cull. Setts are currentlybeing mapped in readiness for the inoculation programme to start this summer.

We hope to see you on the Discovery Centre’s next event for children:

Friday 2nd April Easter Trail – Take part in our forest scavenger hunt to win your chocolate treat. Ages 3 - 11, £3 per child. No need to book: come any time from 10.30am to12noon.

Community News

Dear Readers,

You may have heard of the ‘Policing Pledge’,which is a Government inspired initiative toincrease public confidence in the police. One aspect of the pledge is that LocalPolicing Teams spend 80% of their time visibly working on their area. Some peoplehave misinterpreted this to mean that wewill spend 80% of our time wanderingaround the streets. Although high visibilityfoot patrol is an important aspect of therole of a CSO, it is only a small part of whatwe do to engage with our community forwhat is actually in excess of 90% of ourwork time.

Bewdley and surrounding parishes have alarge number of young people who are a vitally important part of the community; infact they are its future. We believe it is essential to engage positively with ouryoung people to ensure that they grow intoresponsible adults with respect for others, and that they keep themselves safe. Weasked students at our schools throughPACT what issues concern them, and oneof those was that they saw the police as unapproachable.

To address this we introduced ‘Cop Stop’ atthe local high school. This is a drop in session whereby the students can speak tothe local policing team about any personalissues that maybe affecting them, their family and friends or just to gain advice onsocial networking safety, cyber bullying etc.

In addition to this, we also patrol regularlythrough the school grounds, giving the students further opportunity to engagewith us in an informal setting to breakdown barriers between police and youths. With the younger children we deliver theTag Rugby project. More about this nexttime. 99% of the younger generation in Bewdley are good and that small minoritywho do go into bad ways are swiftly identified and monitored. We actively en-gage in multi-agency interventions to pre-vent and deter further negative behaviour.

We haven’t got a gang culture in Bewdleyand certainly don’t have uncontrollable kids.No one in Bewdley is on an ASBO becauseno one deserves to be. I ask that you don’tgive the kids a bad reputation, as they certainly don’t deserve it.

What young people and parents say about the services of Mentor Link

As regular readers of the Bridge will know, Mentor Link is a local charity dedicated to recruiting volunteer mentors to support young people facing difficulties such as family breakdown, friendship issues, illness etc. The nature of our work means that mentoring isconfidential but we have asked some young people and parents for some feedback on theservice that we provide. Here are two quotes:

One parent writes…

We are extremely grateful to Mentor Link for supporting our daughter through a very difficult and unhappy time at school. Mentor Link's independence has been its main strength:not only is our daughter able to discuss the problems she has with school in complete confidence, but she can discuss issues she would rather not share with us either. The Mentorherself has been approachable, friendly and reliable and the advice is structured, practical andencouraging. Mentor Link has helped our daughter to regain confidence and a positive attitude to school life. Thank you again.

One young person writes…

Mentor Link has helped me a lot and many other children in Bewdley. I have a mentor who Igo and see every week in school, I go over, have a cup of tea and a good chat! My mentorhas helped me a lot. My life at home wasn’t very stable and I wasn’t behaving well at school.I was smoking heavily and drinking a lot; not coping very well with everything going onaround me. My mentor helped me change that all around. Having someone to talk to everyweek really helps me. In fact I can’t think where I would be without it. I don’t drink muchanymore and am currently giving up smoking, but none of that would have happened withoutmy mentor.

We are very pleased to be able to offer you the opportunity to attend an important day conference, which is FREE to all who are attending. Compassionate Communities is a newproject, looking at how communities can support one another through the experience ofdeath, dying and bereavement and looking for ways to build up networks of compassion andcare within the community.

The conference is open to anyone with an interest in this area and aims to bring together a broad cross-section of groups, organisations and individuals who are involved in both delivering and receiving end of life care, including representatives from clubs and societies, social groups, community groups, faith groups and schools.

Our keynote speaker will be Professor Allan Kellehear from the University of Bath. Professor Kellehear is a world authority in the field of end of life care and we are delightedthat he is able to be with us for the whole event. We will also have presentations by documentary film company Rosetta Life and poet Sue Hulse.

The conference will take place at Stourport Civic Hall on Thursday 18th March from10.00am – 3.30 pm and will include refreshments and a buffet lunch. Friends of Bewdley MuseumThe Friends of the Museum are looking forward to the newseason; the regular help and support of volunteers at the museum will be as valuable as ever. There will be specialevents to look forward to, which will be enhanced by havingextra people on site, helping with craft activities or stewarding exhibitions.

Volunteers will be on hand before the museum reopens onFriday 2nd April for the annual pre season clean up.

Museum stewards have a variety of roles, including the ever successful brass rubbing, exhibition stewarding and some new children’s activities for 2010.

The Air Raid shelter can only open when there is a volunteer to open it. We have a superbteam who enjoy sharing their knowledge of this shelter and of life in WWII, often learningeven more from the visitors along the way.

This season the Friends have been asked to help in the planning and maintenance of the allotment garden next to the air raid shelter, and a “bee garden” with plants that will attractbees as part of the new permanent Bee Exhibition. If this or any of the other activities inspire you to get involved, we would love to hear from you.

PENN & COACCOUNTANTS

ELDERLY TAX PAYERS You may be entitled to a tax refund.

H M Revenue have recently written to tax payers who received a repayment in previousyears, advising them that they are no longer required to complete a tax return. This is misleading, as tax repayments will be lost if no return is submitted.

We have successfully secured repayments for clients who erroneously believed that their af-fairs were correct.

If you have received tax repayments before, speak to Nigel or Tim, who will advise you freeof charge, whether a submission would prove beneficial.

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 1st FEBRUARY 2010

Snow & Ice Clearing on Town Centre FootpathsCouncillors voiced their concern and misgivings about the state of the town centrepavements following the snowfalls last month. Whilst Load Street became reasonably clearfor traffic, the adjoining pavements remained quite treacherous with the compacted snowturning to ice. Some salt and grit was eventually spread, but it was insufficient to make it safefor pedestrians until the snow had virtually melted naturally. The Town Council agreed tolook into the possibility of purchasing its own small automatic spreader and employing oneof its staff to do the job instead in future winters.

Bewdley Car Parking ReviewWyre Forest District Council have now set up a Parking Review Panel to consider some ofthe issues arising from the enforcement of the “23 hour” rule preventing holders ofResidents’ Season Tickets from parking in the same space for a longer period. This hadproduced a host of complaints last autumn.

The Town Council has been asked to cooperate in setting up its own Panel (of up to fivepersons) who would act as a conduit to represent the concerns of Bewdley residents as awhole and who would then have a chance of going before the District Council’s ReviewPanel later in the Spring

The Town Council is keen to cooperate and invites anyone who would like to act in that wayto get in contact immediately with the Town Clerk at the Guildhall.

Town Centre RoadworksThe road works are now well under way and one positive spin-off from the works has beenthe agreement of the contractors, Enterprise, to dig a trench whilst the road was closed andinsert an electricity cable leading to the War Memorial so that at some future date it can beproperly illuminated. Our thanks go to Enterprise for that goodwill gesture.

Growing Our OwnA Meeting of Bewdley Transition Land Group

13th March 2 – 4 pmBewdley Baptist Church

Would you like to grow your own food but have nowhere to do it?Are you interested in local food? Does the distance traveled by your food concern you?

In 1649 the chaos of the English Civil War inspired a group that declared our land to be acommon treasury and began to plant fruit and vegetables on common land in southern andcentral England. It was a response to a shortage of food and what the Diggers saw as themisuse of productive land by the large landowners (www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00qbz09).Today groups around the country are working to make use of derelict and unloved plots ofland. A good example of this is in the Yorkshire town of Todmorden, where the Incredible Edible Todmorden project is reaping many benefits in the town.

To get us in the mood, we will be showing the film “Grow Your Own”. The film is a comedysuitable for all the family and will be shown free of charge.

Come along to enjoy the film and have a chat about local food, growing our own fruit andvegetables and discuss how we can make the most of underused land in our town by workingtogether as a community. Both gardeners and non-gardeners welcome.

Tea/coffee and cakes will be available after the film.

For further details contact Chris Leck: [email protected] or tel. 07788 995170.

John Henry Newman ExploredOne hundred years later, the figure of John Henry Newman is still veryprominent amongst English Christians. This year, in particular, the expectedvisit of Pope Benedict to England and the hope that this will coincide withNewman’s Beatification has especially brought him to our attention. Herein the Wyre Forest we are anticipating these significant events with twopresentations, which we hope will be enlightening to Christians of all denominations.

They are given by eminent Newman scholars and will be hosted by St Wulstan’s and St Thomas of Canterbury, Stourport.

The Spiritual Themes of Cardinal Newman 7:15pm Tuesday March 9th

Newman founded the first English Oratory. The Provost of the Birmingham Oratory, Fr Richard Duffield, will share with us his insights into the spiritual themes that were thebasis of Newman’s preaching and teaching and life as a pastor.

Newman and the Church Today 7:15pm Tuesday March 16th

Fr Ian Ker is Senior Research Fellow in Theology at St. Benet's Hall, Oxford and the author of“John Henry Newman: A Biography”, (reissued last year by Oxford University Press). He willtalk about the continued appropriateness of much of Newman’s thoughts to Christians today.

I’m afraid you got my “Famous People” memory wrong.I shook hands with Sir John Barbirolli, not nursed him. It happened when some staffnurses were selected to sell programmes at a memorial service for Kathleen Ferrier.(She had been treated at University College Hospital from the start of her illness.)There we were in full uniform – striped dresses, starched frilly collar, cuffs, and aprons inthe Royal Festival Hall. Afterwards we were taken backstage to meet Sir John and heshook hands with us all. Janet Kirk

Community Transport Helpline

I brought community transport into Bewdley 12 years ago when it operated under a well-known international charity aimed idealistically at helping disadvantaged people intheir communities. It worked well, and grew rapidly. In 2006 I was asked to take charge ofa new project in Birmingham, but to close our “unprofitable” operation here – I refusedand lost my job, the Bewdley branch was closed, and our funds and vehicle taken away. Butwe understood the real need in this area and grasped the opportunity, and within twoweeks we were back in operation with our own charitable business and a new name, thanks to the loyalty of our volunteers and the support of all at St Anne’s.

That first year was hard but most rewarding. We received a lot of funding in that first year, but then it becomes harder to find for each year ahead – yet we manage.

We now help people in our communities with advice and transport to essential appointments, lunch clubs, social visits and holidays. Our volunteer drivers and office staffare the keys to our success; they care about those who genuinely need us and go out oftheir way to help. They do it because they enjoy it - our passengers are a delight to talk to;they each have a whole lifetime of experiences and they love having someone interested to listen.

And now our new wheelchair car has arrived!

£25,000 of hardware, manufactured in Italy and converted in Newcastle upon Tyne to provide a spacious and comfortable mode of transport for people who have to travel intheir wheelchairs or find it impossible to access public transport. It’s also very wellequipped and comfortable for the driver.

We now have a fleet of two such vehicles, either available for “self-drive” – friends, relatives or carers can use them on day trips or holidays away for their wheelchair passengers, or our volunteers may be able to help. Our fleet insurance accepts peopleaged between 21 – 70 with a full UK driving licence and a reasonable driving record.

To justify two cars I have to find more passengers and more volunteer driv-ers. We need your help. If you enjoy driving and helping other people, please do ask me for a test drive; if you would like to help in other ways docontact me. Vince Taylor 01299 405832
