All parents will be invited by their child to show their work and discuss their progress. Secondary Samples Last week Secondary Portfolios were distributed to parents. Please look through these portfolios and discuss your child‟s work with them. These tasks then need to be signed and returned to school for the next collection of work to be included. These portfolios will be used as the basis of discussion for Three Way Interviews. Unsure About Uniform? Just a reminder that students are expected to be in full school uniform at all times. In this edition of the Bridge there is a detailed list of the uniform requirements. Currently there are a number of students wearing black canvas shoes rather than leather, these are not acceptable. Students are also wearing a range of different coloured jumpers over their school jumper. Students are able to wear a green jumper (without any brand names etc) over their school jumper, preferably this should be the green polar fleece, available from Blue Sky (Outdoors First). Can you please ensure that your child is in full school uniform at all times. If they are not in uniform then please provide a note. Students out of uniform without explanation will attend a five minute detention at lunch time. Thank you for your cooperation. If you need any assistance with uniform etc, we have a uniform pool at school where goods can be purchased for a small donation. Excellent Student Representation I would like to congratulate all students on their achievements during this term. There have been a wide range of activities on offer and our students have represented our school admirably and should be recognised for this. I have received a range of emails and phone calls commenting on the wonderful behaviour of our students. Some of these include:

Year 7/8 Maths Challenge Excursion to

Balranald

Year 7/10 Bell Shakespeare Excursion to

Balranald

The PSSA Sports Day

The students participating in the Artist in

Residence Program

The Young Leaders Excursion

Jump Rope for Heart

I was also extremely impressed with the students who wrote an article for our Gen Why? section in the Guardian last Wednesday. These students gave up their own time to write and produced some quality pieces of work. They should be very proud of their efforts.

What bus? Just a reminder that if there is a change to your child‟s bus routines then it is important that you let the front office know. Attached to the back of the Bridge are Bus Variation slips which your child can hand to their teacher during Roll Call or you can phone the Front Office. Please ensure you follow this process to eliminate any confusion at bus time. Awesome Auskickers Last Saturday saw the completion of our Auskick program with participants playing a match against the Nyah Auskick kids at the football. Our Auskick program has been extremely successful and we must thank Tim Hoare our coordinator and Jack Spinks, assistant, for their efforts in implementing this program. They have been wonderful coaches and our students skills have improved as a result. Melanie Wait Principal

Big thankyou‟s need to go to the P & C for running the BBQ and Mrs McKindlay and Year Five and Six for selling the drinks. Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated. Thank you to

Chris Telephoni, Jason Forster and especially Jaide Berg for being the time keepers on the day. Jaide Berg was an excellent assistant on the day and kept me organised as to where age groups needed to be next. Mick Heslop was fantastic as our starter and marking out the oval. The biggest thankyou must go to Terri Ogle who was responsible for the administration of paperwork on the day. She kept track of all placings, scores and certificates. Thank you Terri. Year Three/Four Report This term has been busy for students in Year Three/Four. They are currently learning about the history of Gold and the Eureka Rebellion. As part of this study they have had to research methods of finding gold. Below is Hannah Everitt‟s Information Report on a Cradle and Laura Domaille‟s on Shaft Mining.

Cradle A cradle is a piece of mining equipment that was used in the eighteen fifties for finding gold. It was much quicker and the non back breaking way, than panning which was slow. The cradle consisted of a box fitted on rockers, so that when the operator pulled and pushed the handle, the cradle rocked to and fro. All three layers of the cradle have different names; the first layer is called a sieve, which is made out of metal which has holes punched in it while the other two were called inclined. At the rear of the cradle was the hopper which kept all the dirt, gold and gravel inside the cradle. Inside the cradle were two sloping shelves with thin strips of wood fastened across them, these were called riffles. The rifles were used to catch the gold and wash the dirt and soil away. Often, two men worked the cradle, one shovelling wash dirt onto the sieve and the other working the cradle with one hand and using a dipper (bucket) with the other to take water from the creek and pour it over the wash dirt as the cradle was being rocked. The gold cradle was used for separating gold from dirt, soil and gravel. One digger shovelled dirt into the cradle then rocked it back and forth while another digger poured water through. As the gold was so heavy, when the cradle was being rocked the gold passed all three layers and sat at the bottom of the cradle.

The cradle was invented in eighteen forty nine. Panning was slow back breaking work so the next development was the cradle. With a cradle the diggers can find gold much easier then when the diggers go panning but with the cradle it is a cheat. By Hannah Everitt

Windlass-Shaft Mining A Shaft Mine is a hole dug in the ground that miners use to search for gold. In the gold fields time, Miners used a basic tool called the Windlass. The Windlass would sit above a Shaft Mine. Miners used this to collect dirt/gold from the Shaft Mines. A Windlass is four planks of wood (2 used for sides, one used for a top and one used to wrap rope around). It also has a handle so that miners could wind the rope and bucket up, bringing the soil/gold from the bottom of the mine to the top. The Shaft Mines were up to 50 m deep and they dug with shovels & picks. A Windlass is to help collect gold. A miner would shovel dirt from the bottom of the Shaft Mine into a bucket that would get wound up to the top of the Shaft Mine. The miners would then empty the bucket and search for gold in the soil. Miners would have to be confident to go Shaft Mining because they would have to risk their live, as Shaft Mining was dangerous. Often mines would collapse. Miners would find far more gold there then any where else and would find bigger pieces of gold. Over the Shaft Mine a Wind sail would often be built to ventilate the Shaft Mine this would catch the breeze and send it down. This was necessary because when a shaft was 15~20 feet (5~7 meters) deep or more, there was not enough natural air flow to provide fresh air and the shaft became stuffy and uncomfortable. The mine could collapse trapping the miner. The rope could snap because the gravel/gold is so heavy. If the miner dug into a water trench the mine would fill up with water and he could drown. The Windlass was only effective to a depth of approximately 40 meters because it was too slow and the work was too hard to use on deeper shafts. By Laura Domaille

Students are currently undertaking projects at home relating to Gold. A number of projects have been handed in so far.

Science Week Kinder to Year Two Activities On Wednesday the 18th of August Kinder, Year One and Year Two joined together for an afternoon of science fun. At first they played a game on the Interactive Whiteboard linked with this year‟s focus for „Science Week‟ (biodiversity). The game was called „Garden Detectives‟ which involved the students locating and collecting minibeasts from a garden and reading about them. Once they had collected four minibeasts the students had to place them back into the garden. Due to time we were not able to complete the game. If any parents would like to play this game at home with their child, go to http://www.tale.edu.au/ tale4students/ and type in the code X01UU After this game the students were broken into six groups. Each group had a different mini-experiment to undertake. The experiments all had focus questions. Experiment One: Paper Porthole; focus question – How is it possible for you to walk through an A4 piece of paper? Experiment Two: Leap Frog? No … Leap Ball; focus question – Can you make a ping-pong ball jump from one cup to another without touching it? Experiment Three: What a Strong Grip; focus question – Are you strong enough to pull a plastic bag out of a jar? Experiment Four: Sticky Coin; Will water drops stick to a coin and if so, how many? Experiment Five: Star Search; focus question – What do stars and toothpicks have in common? Experiment Six: Crafty Colours; focus question – Can you make colours disappear? The students were given time to work through their experiment and then each group had a chance to show their experiment to the rest of the students. As a special treat for the students because they worked so well together and behaved fantastically all afternoon Miss Rutherford showed them some film canister rockets. Leeta Rutherford and Andrea Hazlett

Mitchell, Cooper, Sam and Joseph undertook the experiment ‘Paper Porthole’.

Natalia, Jenae, Corey, Montana and Hiva undertook the experiment ‘What a Strong Grip’.

Tarini, Paddy, Jack and Indianna undertook the experiment ‘Leap Frog? No … Leap Ball’.

Congratulations to all the primary students who participated in Jump Rope for Heart on Friday 13th August. We were blessed with a sunny afternoon. All students participated in the various activities with much enthusiasm. Well done. Congratulations also goes to the Year 5-6 students who organised the activities. They did a wonderful job instructing and encouraging the younger students. Leading up to our “Jump Off”, students were busy collecting sponsorship money for the Heart Foundation. Our small number of students raised a massive $883. Congratulations goes to the students for raising this amount for a very worthy cause. Well done. Canberra Cake Stall On Saturday, 28th August 2010, the Year 5/6 students will be holding a stall in Swan Hill to raise money for their Canberra Excursion. Donations by parents and community members would be greatly appreciated. Donations of fruit, plants or produce would be fantastic. We appreciate your assistance and look forward to seeing you in Campbell Street on Saturday. Regards Year 5/6

Secondary Report Math Masters A magnificent competition was held last Friday between the budding mathematicians of Tooleybuc and Balranald Central schools. Students in Years 7 and 8 all travelled to Balranald to demonstrate their mathematical knowledge in a series of spine tingling events. All of our students were actively involved in the event that gave them the opportunity to use Maths in a different context and to interact with students from another school. Thank you to Mrs Martin for taking our students and to all who attended and demonstrated the exemplary behaviour we expect from our students. All welcome All parents are invited to participate in the literacy and numeracy celebrations that will take place on Tuesday 31st August from 10:00 am till 11:00am. Secondary students will be involved in a series of activities to demonstrate their literacy and numeracy skills and we look forward to working with any parents that would like to join in. Year Seven/ Eight Science Students have been studying the concepts of energy and the impact it has on our lives. In the coming weeks students will investigate different forms of energy to use when we run out of non-renewable resources Year Nine Science Students are finalising their study on ecosystems. In this unit they have been looking at the different effects of humans on these systems. They will be conducting a class debate in the coming weeks associated with nuclear power and its influence on ecosystems. Biology Good luck to our senior students who are completing their final exams. We wish you all the best and hope the study goes well. It is important that students are studying all subjects regularly to ensure they have the best understanding possible prior to sitting their external exams. Year Eleven/Twelve Agriculture Senior Agriculture students are completing a study on agribusiness and are looking at meeting with the Commonwealth Bank Agribusiness

manager in the next two weeks. This will assist with their understanding of the topic. Artist Installations Over the last few weeks we have been lucky enough to work with Artist Vicky Lowry from Wakool. So far we have made poppies from old LP records, painted tiles with glass paint, made lino prints and experimented with colour wire. We are enjoying our time working with Vicky and look forward to exhibiting our finished work later in the year.

Rowena, Vicky Lowry, Skye, Naomi, Kristyn and Remy enjoyed their artistic endeavours.

Careers Another busy fortnight for Careers. Last week our Year 10 students all undertook Mock Interviews at the Tooleybuc Sporting Club. All students were required to have a completed resume and application letter addressed to a job they were interested in applying for. Two panels of interviewers conducted interviews with each of the students, giving the students feed back on their dress, ability to answer questions, communication skills, eye contact, positive application letter, resume and their ability to sell themselves. This program will benefit students with their job seeking process for years to come.

A big thank you to all who gave up time to be on an interview panel and to the Tooleybuc Sporting Club for providing the venue. Year Ten are now all ready to participate in Work Experience next week and we wish them good luck for this. I shall visit them during the week.

School Based Traineeships/Apprenticeships Last week I visited Maria Telefoni a Year Tweleve student undertaking a School Based Traineeship. Here are her comments: For the last 18 months I have been completing a School Based Traineeship in Office Administration at RMonPro (Marelize Fourie). Some of the things I have done include: counting blossoms on the almond trees, surveying how many almond trees are on the property also doing other office administration which includes typing up statistics, filing, typing letters, general cleaning and organisation of the office. By Maria Telefoni

Maria entering statistics during her SBT

In addition to Maria we currently have the following SBT/SBA occurring:

Geoffrey Richardson - SBA, Certificate III in

Carpentry based with Luke Shadbolt.

Ricky Wilkins - SBT Agriculture Certificate II

on family farm.

Tim Hoare - SBT Agriculture Certificate II on

family farm.

Kennedy Lockhart - SBA Certificate III in

Automotive, based with Gary Lenon.

We thank all employers for their wonderful support with this program. Any students in Year Ten who would like to undertake a SBA/ SBT as part of their senior studies should be thinking of this now, firstly finding a willing employer and secondly gaining information from Mrs Morton on the process.

Year Twelve Students wishing to continue into university studies need to be reading through their VTAC‟s and UAC‟s – next week Mrs Morton shall spend time lodging these applications with the students. All other Year Twelve students should be updating their resumes and thinking through their options for 2011. Year Eleven Students undertaking VET subjects are undertaking work placement at present. Photographs of these shall be in the next Bridge. Open Days Coming Up 29 Aug Ballarat Uni LaTrobe (Bundora) Secondary Homework

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS 2010 The New South Wales Government provides much of the necessary equipment and materials for the efficient running of the school. However, to keep up to date with the latest textbooks and to supply materials for such subjects as technics, craft and food technology, parents are asked to make a voluntary contribution. These are reviewed each year and kept to an absolute minimum, and are payable at the beginning of each school year. These contributions are important in ensuring that we can optimize learning opportunities for students. Your cooperation in this regard is greatly appreciated.
