TESTIMONY OF THE PAST

On the 24th November 2010 our class

3A  of  the  secondary  school  E.

Armaforte  in  Altofonte  took  part  in  a

very  interesting  meeting  about  the

massacre  in  Portella  della Ginestra  on

the  1st  May  1947,  when  a  group  of

farmers were together to celebrate the

national  festival  of  Labor  day.  This

murder was  attributed  to  the  criminal

separatist  bandit  Salvatore  Giuliano

and  it  is  perhaps  one  of  the  darkest

pages of Sicilian history.

This  meeting  was  part  of  the

informative  project  “Exploration  of

memory”, a project focused on the oral

interaction with  some old  people who

were witness to the crime.

First we met Mr. Schirò. He told us he

was 15th that very day when 11 people

died  and  27  were  wounded.  It  was

really  shocking  for us  to  listen how he

suddenly  found himself  in the midst of

shooting and how he could save hiding

away  behind  a  rock.  Finally when  the

shooting was over, he ran  in the street

and  saw  his  grandfather who,  in  spite

of  the chaos,   was waving  the  socialist

flag,  just  that  flag which  couldn’t have

been waved for 20 years because of the

fascism.

After these words Mr Tinervia began

to speak and he told us that during the

second word war he was very afraid to

keep  on  living  in  Palermo  because  of

the  heavy  bombardments  and  so  he

decided  to  move  with  his  family  to

Montelepre (hometown of  S. Giuliano)

and  right  there  he  was  witness  to

another murder  of  farmers  signed  up

by Giuliano and his bandits.

Talking  to  these  people  was  very

important for us because through their

words  we  had  the  opportunity  to

consider  and  think  about  the  bloody

peasant revolts of the past and we also

understood  we   must  always  keep  in

mind  their  sacrifice  and  never  forget

the  price  they  have  paid  to  build  a

better future.

IMPORTANT EVENTS IN GERMAN HISTORY ‐ WHAT EVERY

GERMAN STUDENT MUST KNOW

The fall of the Berlin Wall - a really short historical overview

After World War II, Germany was divided in 4 occupied zones. They were controlled by the United States, the United Kingdom, France and the Soviet Union. Some time later, Germany was not occupied anymore but divided in two German states - West Germany and East Germany. This also divided families and friends because East Germany was controlled by the Soviet Union. So, a lot of people wanted to leave East Germany and move to the west. This was not easy as there was a border dividing the two states and border controls were strict. But there was one chance to become a citizen of West Germany: escape to the western part of Berlin. This city was in the middle of East Germany but was divided. Only the eastern part belonged to East Germany, but the western part was not controlled by the

Soviet Union. When too many people decided to escape the communist regime, the East German government discussed the construction of the wall in 1961. A certain Walther Ulbricht signed the order to close the border and to erect a wall. They started to construct the wall on 13th August, 1961, because they wanted to cut East Germany completely off West Germany. Somebody who tried to climb over the wall was sometimes even killed by soldiers. The people were complaining about the wall and became more and more unsatisfied with their government until there were so many protests and people fleeing to the West that the borders were finally declared open in 1989. Today Germany is united and we all live in a democracy without any barriers. We hope it will always remain that way…

chosen in memory of the brutal 1960 murder of the three Mirabal sisters, considered revolutionary women. In Italy only since 2005 several Anti-violence Centers and Women Houses have started to celebrate this day. In recent years, institutions and various

organizations such as Amnesty International celebrate this day through political and cultural initiatives.

INTERVIEWS

A new face at our school in Kronach: Interview with Eszter Borlay

Since September there is a Comenius assistant at our school. Eszter Borlay teaches Hungarian at Polish at our school, which is really great because Poland is one of our Comenius partners and we also have an exchange with Hungary. She was really nice and friendly and answered our questions.

Where are you from?

- I'm from Budaörs/Ungarn.

What languages can you speak?

- I can speak Hungarian, Polish, German, English and a bit of Russian.

What's your job?

- I'm going to be a teacher for Hungarian and Polish.

Can you learn German in Hungarian schools?

- Yes, you can. I learned German at school because there is a GErman minority in our town.

How long do you have lessons in Hungary?

- You usually have lessons until four o'clock in the afternoon.

How did you hear about "Comenius"?

- A friend told me about "Comenius" and so I applied.

How many people are in the Hungarian and in the Polish lessons?

- In the Hungarian lessons we have two groups; one group with seven people and the other group with five people. In the Polish group there are seven people. I teach these pupils in the afternoon because the lessons are not obligatory. They learn these languages because they want to and because they are interested in the countries and cultures.

Do you enjoy it here in Germany?

- It's very nice here, I like Kronach and the castle. The people are friendly, too.

Have you ever been to Germany before?

- Yes, when I was in class 7 and 8 we had a school exchange. I could make new friends and learn German.

MUSIC

Music culture in Germany

"Love oh Love, I got to

tell you how I feel

about you, like a

satellite......."

Who doesn’t know this

song?!

It is the German

Eurovision Song Contest

winner song by Lena

Meyer Landrut of the

year 2010.

She is a normal girl, 19

years old and she is

from Hannover.

She took part in the

castingshow “Unser

Star für Oslo Our star

for Oslo”. She was one

of 4,500 competitors.

She convinced the

audience with the help

of her good voice and

her character.

She is someone who is

always herself, she is a

very honest person, she

shows a casual

behaviour and a

laidback lifestyle. These

are the reasons why

people adore her.

With Stefan Raab, her

manager, who always

respects her wishes, she

became famous.

But Lena is an

exception...

In Germany there are

many people who took

part in such casting

shows, but only some of

them remain famous.

Some of the casting

shows in Germany are

for example

“Deutschland sucht den

Superstar”,

Page 24: The Bridge

“X Faktor” or

“Popstars”.

In our opinion there are

too many casting shows

in Germany because

most of the winners

aren’t successful or have

you ever heard of

Merzhad Marashi?! We

do not think so.

We believe the only

purpose of these shows

is to make money and

not to further artists.

They also don’t care

about these artists’

careers in the music

business.

These are the reason

why teenagers prefer

stars and bands like

“Seeed”, a band who

comes from Berlin. It is

a rap, raggae dancehall

group and their most

famous song is called

“Ding”. Other bands are

“Die Ärzte”, “Tokio

Hotel” or “Scooter”, who

also enjoy worldwide

success. They got

famous without casting

shows, they have been in

this business for years

and they are still

famous.

A good example is “Die

Ärzte”.

They are a punk rock

band founded in the

year 1982.

This group is one of the

most popular bands in

Germany and they have

sold over 23 millions of

CDs so far.

But in Germany we

don’t only listen to

German music.

German teenagers listen

to music which is

produced in the USA or

has English lyrics.

In Germany bands and

stars like the “Black

Page 25: The Bridge

Eyed Peas”, “Rihanna”

or “David Guetta” are

very popular with

teenagers.

At the weekend, when

teenagers go into clubs,

most of the songs which

are played there are

international and

everybody likes dancing

to this music.

You can also find

international music on

TV. There is a special

channel, where you can

find many new songs,

produced in other

countries but mainly

produced in the USA.

There is also a misson

called “VIVA Top 100”,

which is aired every

week, where teenagers

can vote for their

favourite song, no

matter if it is German,

English or from other

countries.

80 of the songs in the

charts are written in the

English language.

So you can see that

German teenagers like

international music more

than music which is

produced in Germany.

German teenagers listen

music whenever they

have the time. No matter

if they do their

homework, sit in the bus

or talk to their friends.

Music is an important

part of our life and we

can't escape it, because

music is everywhere

everytime. We are

exposed to music in our

everyday life and

consequently, music is

our companion. We

listen to it when we go

shopping at the

shopping centre, in a

restaurant or when we

sit in a waiting room at

a doctor.

Page 26: The Bridge

Sometimes we don’t

even hear the music in

the background because

it is part of normal life.

Moreover, a lot of teens

make music. They can

play the guitar or the

violin. So we think that

music is one of the

biggest and important

things of our teen lives.

This is the music culture

in Germany as seen by

teenagers and we think

that it doesn’t differ so

much from other

countries. When I was

in France for a week

and I listened to the

radio, they were playing

the same songs like in

Germany. You can see

that nearly every

country likes the same

kind of music...

And what do you listen

to??

SCIENCE

Scientific women

Women’s participation in the field of science has been a recent occurrence, happening suddenly. Sociologists have compared it with some events of the medieval age: in that period the first universities were set up, giving rise to women who had previously only been mothers, nannies, wives, housewives, etc. This change allowed them to become women of science.

Nothing was easy in those times, but without a doubt, women marked a turning point by joining universities. However, science and technology are also social processes and, as such, it is necessary to analyze them in close dialectic relation: the field of science, technology and society constitutes in an international one which - within its subjects of discussion - is the main problem, one which has existed and will continue to exist for a very long time.

Women, when accessing university and scientific research, did not abandon their role as mother and wife, and therefore found themselves with two priorities: their work and their family. Men, however, continued to solely dedicate themselves to their work. As a result, women needed to organize their time and their ambitions for progress in accordance with the men. This means that their focus on studying and investigation was very different to that of the men’s. Nonetheless, at university, women still had higher marks than men in general. According to several studies, in the domain of investigation, women usually published less pieces of work than men but they were just as influential, despite some fundamental aptitudes being more developed in men than in women.

Refundar a negative argument against women in both a cultural or scientific scope which would seem both contemptuous and offensive to feminists and the values under which we have built our society; therefore, we will not mention any argument of any kind against women, since we are all equal in every task and aspect of life.

for another two lessons. There is a break and then two last lessons

again and then I finally can go home.

When I arrive, I eat something, do my homework and have some

free time. I can meet my friends or practice a hobby. It is the best

time of the day.

The last thing I must do for school is revising for the next day.

And this is my life every Monday to Friday!

There are a lot of marks and tests, too. We know when we have to

take some of the tests the "big" ones, but unfortunately there can

be little "surprise" tests. So I must revise every day.

When I was in elementary school, there weren’t any grades in the

first and second class. But from the third class on, there were tests.

After the 4th class I went to the Gymnasium, because I had good

marks. Some of the others in my class didn't make it because their

marks were not good enough and they had to go to other schools.

The best of the whole school year are the holidays. I have holidays

in autumn, on Christmas, on Carnival, on Easter, on Pentecost and

in summer. Two school years are divided by the summer holidays.

Now, you know something about my school life!

Love & greetings,

A student from a Gymnasium

COOKING

"GERMAN DELICACIES  What you have to taste"

Our article is about typical German dishes. We listed two of them and also added their recipes.

These three dishes are the following:

Butterplätzchen and Bratwurst&Kartoffelsalat.

All of them are easily to make and taste fantastic. German cooking can be very different and

special, so we´ve chosen something, so we´ve chosen something of pastries (Butterplätzchen)

and something of the typical Bavarian cooking. (Bratwurst und Kartoffelsalat)

                                    Potato salad

If you want to prepare a potato salad for four people you need:

‐1kg potatoes

‐1 onion

‐125g bacon

‐oil

‐vinegar

‐salt & pepper

‐parsley

At first you must cook the potatoes. Then cut the onion  in small pieces and put  it  in a bowl.

Then you must roast the bacon and give it in the bowl, too. Afterwards peel the potatoes and

cut them in small pieces. Then you mix them with the other ingredients. Last, taste everything

with oil, vinegar, salt, pepper and parsley and mix it well.

It tastes really good with our German "Bratwurst" !!!

Fränkische Butterplätzchen

Here is a recipe for "Franconian buttercookies"

What you need is: 375g butter, 200g sugar, 5 egg yolks, 500g flour
