THE BRANCH NEWSLETTER Of the Hervey bay
rsl sub-branch Inc.
Proudly supporting The
Veteran community
June 2017

Another ANZAC Day has passed and what a magnificent turnout by Veterans and the residents of Hervey Bay at both Services. I have had some dislikes but I have had more likes, so like everything, there is room for improvement. Next year will no doubt be bigger and better. Refer to our website for more information on the above commemorations: http://www.herveybayrslsubbranch.com.au
After ANZAC Day the Sub-Branch has gained more members. The number of members has increased to nearly 1800 which is large compared to most Sub-Branches. Please remember, my door will always be open to any member who wishes to come and have a chat or has a problem and hopefully they can be fixed immediately or, things may take more time but most can be dealt with to a satisfactory outcome for all parties. Until next time stay in good health and be happy. Brian Tidyman President June 2017

BROOWEENA BRIDGE COMMEMORATION
Members of the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-branch 9th Battalion WW1 Re-enactment Group took part in the
Brooweena Bridge Ceremony on Saturday 20th
May. 2017
The Brooweena Bridge was built in 1921 by local employees from the properties surrounding the now well-
kept monument which is approximately 16 km north of the village of Brooweena.
The Re-enactment Group under command of the Re-enactment Group CSM Ian Williams, mounted an
honour guard on the bridge, also 2 members carried out flag orderly duties for the Australian National Flag
and the WW1 9th Battalion battle flag, while another member held the Eternal Flame on the middle of the
bridge as a mark of respect and in memory for those who enlisted in WW1 from the community of
Brooweena. Many did not return to their homeland and to live out their lives in peace. Mr Jim Wilson (Re-
enactment Group Commander) delivered a prayer for the service. He also conducted the ode, in prelude to
the Last Post, minutes silence and Reveille.
The master of ceremonies for the service was the President of the Brooweena Historical Village Mrs Michelle
McLeish who opened and closed the service. Mrs Gail Gaul recited a poem in dedication to the soldiers of
the district.
The service was well attended by the members of the local community of Brooweena. Many of the local
attendees wore period costume to relive the era of the Great War which added to the setting for the service.
Mrs McLeish has requested that the service be an annual event to honour those from the community who
served their country with pride and gave the supreme sacrifice.

The Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch was delighted with the thousands of people who turned out for the Dawn
Service at Freedom Park. The crowds further swelled for the Main Service and showed their appreciation
to all who marched. A private function was held for Sub-Branch members and their guest at the Services
Memorial Club and was well attended.

RSL WOMEN’S AUXILIARY NEWS June 2017
ANZAC DAY: Auxiliary members distributed programmes at both services when our knitted red poppies adorned the trees near the Cenotaph. The small white commemorative crosses that we introduced last year were available again and more than 300 of them were placed in the ground below the flagpole. It was gratifying that so many people chose to use the crosses to make a personal commemoration. They have been stored until 2018 and the funds raised this year will be donated to local community organisations.
T.S. KRAIT INSPECTION PARADE: The Auxiliary was invited to attend the parade in May and our President, Secretary and Treasurer were there to see the Naval Cadets on parade. They were most impressive, as always, and it was good to see their numbers are increasing. The T.S. Krait cadets are amongst the recipients of the funds the Auxiliary gives to local organisations and we are happy to be able to give them our support. TOMBOLA: Our annual tombola will be held in Hervey House at the RSL Club on Tuesday 27 June from 9:30 am for a 10:00 am start. A lot of good prizes has been collected and there will be six raffle prizes and three lucky door prizes, as well as a complimentary morning tea. Tickets will be $5.00 and $10.00. It will be a relaxed and friendly morning with chances to win something worthwhile and we hope many people will come along to enjoy it. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING STATE COUNCIL OF AUXILIARIES: The AGM will be held in Brisbane on Friday 23 June. Our Auxiliary is sending a Delegate again this year. COMING UP: We will be getting together for lunch at the Black Dog Cafe on Tuesday 20 June. The next bus trip is on Tuesday 25 July when we will be going to Childers and then on to Woodgate for lunch. Visitors are always welcome but as seats are limited it is necessary to let us know if you would like to come by ‘phoning Esme Fay on 4194 0666. MONTHLY MEETINGS: The Auxiliary meets on the second Tuesday each month, February-December, at 10:30 am at the RSL Club with lunch afterwards for those who choose to stay. We are always ready to welcome new members and a military affiliation is not necessary for membership. If you would like to join us and need further information please contact Barbara Campbell 4128 9110 or Joan Hawkes 4125 4049. FROM THE AUXILIARY’S ARCHIVES – MEETING MINUTES 9 SEPTEMBER 1947 “On August 30th the Women’s Auxiliary ran a dance in the soldiers’ hall which was well attended. Max Peter’s orchestra provided the music and we gave free supper and three novelty dances, all for two and six admission. We hope to net a profit of about fifteen pounds when all expenses are paid.”
BUS TRIP AND LUNCHES: Cyclone Debbie caused the post-ponement of the March bus trip but we finally made it to the Maryborough Market and the Hospital Museum in May. We enjoyed a wander through the market, morning tea at St Paul’s and a tour of the Hospital Museum which was about to celebrate its centenary. The day ended with lunch at a local hotel and a chance to shop at Station Square. The bus trips are bi-monthly so we meet for lunch at a variety of restaurants in Hervey Bay during the alternate months.

Z Special Unit Tours into Z Commando Training School, Fraser Island. Jimmy Swan of TEAM Pty Ltd, supported by his wife Cathy, run these professional tours into Z Commando school on Fraser Island, just 3km south of Kingfisher Bay resort. Refer-rals from customers, as young as 9 and as old as 78 years old have all unequivocally la-belled these tours as Educational, Memorable, and Emotional and feel at these standards, schools should enrol students in these tours that mean so much to our freedom and way of life today. Jimmy has clearly stipulated his admiration for these men and their daring mis-sions, the fact near 50% of the men who went abroad never returned alive or in many cases never seen again. Jimmy is a Commando veteran, with massive guerrilla warfare combat experience, still jumps from aircraft, is a member of both Australian Special Force Associations and the tours endorsed by both. Jimmy participates in memorial services and military meetings on a regular basis and attended the Plaque dedication to Z in Canberra on 1 August 2016 meeting many Z men, wives and families and in turn learning so much personal info. He and Cathy have organised Z family weekends and tours this year and basically brought the Z Commando School on Fraser Island to life. Kingfisher Bay resort have kindly allocated TEAM their Z corner opposite reception in-cluding artefacts and Z illustrations, some museum pieces and includes leaflets offering their services to Groups. Any group 10+ pax (paying clients) may contact Jimmy 7 days a week and he will arrange a quote to be given. This would generally be a Day away package, includes the ferry 2 ways and a meal and the Z tour. Veterans are offered 50% discount and direct Z families FOC on the Z tour portion. The tour is 6 km both ways, a nice easy walk ad takes 3 hrs and includes a full initial brief on Z and their purpose, their missions, their training including at Lake Mackenzie and Maheno, then the walk in and intros to tracking, survival, trauma medics, a full brief on buildings and their usage in Z, the activities and training areas, an emotional Service at their own wreath memorial of some of the men, in-cludes the Ode and Last Post. On the return to Kingfisher resort, we visit a few more parts of the camp that remains nicely hidden. A client stated.. “We have been coming to Fraser for years and done many walks into Z alone. My kids and I joined a group and did the tour. It was so interesting, the service so touching, I state it is in fact cheap and great value. You must give this a go if you truly feel for these forgotten heroes.”
Jimmy airborne salutes all men and woman serving now, all vets and is a avid supporter of help to stopping veteran suicides by
supporting them.

The Naval Association of Australia Fraser Coast Sub Section
“Each for All-All for Each”
Postal Address: Fraser Coast Sub-section of N.A.A. c/-Hervey Bay RSL & Services Memorial Club Inc.
PO Box 3042, Pialba QLD 4655
Membership:
The Sub-section has recruited in excess of 60 financial full members to date. We are looking carefully towards the Maryborough area with the view of either attracting new members, or helping to set up a new Sub-section.
Our general meetings are well attended with our quarterly average attendance is creeping up into the low to mid 30’s. This has resulted in our meetings being moved to a larger room in the RSL club.
If you are eligible for membership, and would like to be part of our extremely social group, please contact Rod Beckinsale (M) 0409625570, or Peter McDermott (M) 0409260255.
We meet at the Hervey Bay RSL Club Board Room at 1100 on the 2nd Sunday of the month (Feb-Dec). Community activities: Following on from our Commemoration service on 1st March, 2017 to recognise the 50th anniversary since the
adoption by the R.A.N. of the Australian White Ensign, we have seen another very successful Anzac Day. The Naval Association were given the honour of leading the ESO part of the Anzac Day parade this year and it was very pleasing to see over 60 marchers in our ranks. The Naval Cadets at TS Krait held their annual inspection on Saturday 6th May. The cadets were well turned out and their marching drill was very good. The inspecting (cadet) officer was very pleased with the overall presentation. Coming up in July are the RIMAU Commemoration (9th July) and Korea Memorial Day (27th July).
Southbank Naval Memorial: The ceremony to unveil the Southbank Naval Memorial (“Sailor with his kit-bag”) was held on Saturday 27th May at South Brisbane
Memorial Park. Dignitaries included Chief of Navy and the Queensland Governor. Fostered by the F.E.S.R. Association (a special mention for Rudi Bianchi) and with funding from many sources, this statue is the only
public memorial in Queensland to honour
those who serve or have served in the Royal Australian Navy since Federation in times of
both war and peace. The bronze statue was sculptured by Catherine Anderson.
A good number of Fraser Coast NAA
members made the trip down to Brisbane to
attend the service.
Social:
Our social life for the quarter continues to run quite well and is gaining strength: We continue to conduct our get-togethers on a fortnightly basis at the RSL Club Anzac bar;
We attend lunch together after our GM’s; Are planning a BBQ at the Botanical Gardens in June; and
Our annual dinner will be held in early July.
