The Brain

Spinal Cord

Transfers messages from brain to the body and the body to the brain.

The Brain

Medulla

The lowest section of the brainstem (at the top end of the spinal cord); it controls automatic (involuntary) functions including heartbeat, breathing, swallowing, etc. A MUST FOR SURVIVAL

The Brain

Pons=Connecting fibers that are part of the brain stem. Send messages from the spine to the brain. Plays a role in sleep and relaxation.

The Brain

Cerebrum=Latin for “Brain”It is divided into the left and right cerebral hemispheres that are joined by the corpus callosum, which communicates between the two hemispheres. The right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, and vice versa. Each cerebral hemisphere is divided into 4 lobes.

Additional info: The brain has ridges which are called gyri or singular, gyrus. The "valleys” on the brain are called sulci or singular, sulcus.

The Brain

Thalamus=CONTROL CENTERA small structure at the top of the brainstem in charge of relaying messages to the appropriate part of the brain.

This is Thalas. All she does is relay messages

The Brain

Hypothalamus=A region in the upper part of the brainstem that acts as a relay to the pituitary gland - it controls body temperature, blood pressure, sleep, moods, the release of hormones, hunger, and thirst.

Pituitary gland=a gland attached to the base of the brain that secretes hormones.

The BrainHypothalamus=“ I am hungry, hot, tired and in a bad mood.”

“Maybe you have high blood pressure, or maybe it is hormonal.”
