Under the baton of Musical Director, Brian Keech, our annual Autumn concert in the Parish Church of New Bradwell opened with the march “Castell Coch”. Dedicated to the old Melingriffith Works Band by the composer T.J. Powell, who was known as the Welsh Sousa, this was a good rousing start to the evening’s entertainment. We had been warned beforehand that it might be cold in the Church tonight as the heating was not working, but the problem had been fixed and by the end of evening it was going to get very warm. The first soloist of the evening was Keith with the tenor horn solo “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” This well known song was a hit for the Hollies and this arrangement for brass band was written by Brian Crookes. A useless fact for you here, Keith went to the same school as the son of the Hollies manager! This was followed by the first of two classical items in tonight’s programme, the overture from Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro”. This is a technically difficult piece to play, and as Brian reminds us, Mozart did not compose the music for brass band! It requires a lot of fast but delicate playing with many sudden changes in dynamics. There were one or two blips but all in all we made a pretty good attempt with this. We slowed the tempo down with Alan Fernie’s arrangement of "Someone to Watch Over Me", a song composed by George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin from the musical Oh, Kay! (1926). It has been performed by numerous artists since its debut and is a jazz standard as well as a key work in the Great American Songbook. Our second classical offering came next, the ballet suite from “Le Cid”. Le Cid is an opera in four acts by Jules Massenet, based on a play of the same name by Pierre Corneille. While the opera itself is not in the standard operatic repertoire, the ballet suite is a popular concert piece and this arrangement by Howard Snell shows why.

Our second soloist was Fraser with the euphonium solo “Myfanwy”. Myfanwy is a popular Welsh song composed by Joseph Parry and first published in 1875. Parry wrote the music to lyrics written by Richard Davies and the song is still a favourite with Welsh male voice choirs. Fraser gave a sensitive interpretation of the music with plenty of expression. It made an impression on at least one member of the audience as can be read further in this report!

The next item was “The Olympic Spirit”, written by the prolific American composer John Williams for the 1988 Summer Olympics held in South Korea and arranged by Steve Sykes. The music opens with a fanfare played by the lower instruments and is followed by a stately theme. An exciting finale brought the first half of the programme to a close. After an interval for refreshments there was a performance by the Development Band. Under the direction of Clive Keech, they presented two contrasting numbers, “Aria From Peasant Cantata” by J S Bach and “Beetle Drive” written by Alan Pring who spe-cialises in music for beginners groups. These were played really well. It shows a lot of promise for the future and the Development Band deserve our encouragement. We also should remember to thank those of our members who give up even more of their time in helping to teach these learners.

Our final soloist for the evening was Sue with the cornet solo “Solitaire” written by Neil Sedaka and Cody arranged by Stephen Corbett. Sue played this with style and confidence and was warmly applauded for her performance.

Sue was then joined by Ralph, Tug, Gary, Julia and Clive, her colleagues from the cornet section for “Buglers Holiday”. This bright and cheerful piece is an old favourite written by Leroy Anderson, an American master of light music. He composed “Buglers Holi-day” in 1954 and it is cleverly written around standard American bugle calls and bugle call-like figures. As usual in Anderson's mu-sic, both the solo parts and the rest of the orchestration are highly accomplished. This arrangement for brass band gives the cor-net section the chance to shine and they took full opportunity with a showy presentation.

Slowing down the tempo again, we played Robbie Williams popular song “Angels”, arranged by Steve Sykes. Karen excelled in the opening section and the Band showed that even the more modern music lends itself well to brass band treatment. The finale of the published programme was Ray Farr’s”Adventures For Brass”. An original work for brass band, this opens with familiar snatches from Carmina Burana and develops into a Latin-American dance in mixed metres followed by a chorale and dance. The composer wrote that it’s not very original but it’s fun! It also gives the horn section a chance to play the tune for a change and got the full treatment. We were thanked for the evening’s entertainment by the Vicar, the Reverend Chris Collinge who enquired if the euphonium solo was to be included on the new recording. She seemed delighted when Brian confirmed it was to be featured on the new CD! Per-haps we should put a photo of Fraser on the front cover.... As an encore we played “Amparito Roca”. This was written by Jaime Texidor Dalmau who lived most of his life in Baracaldo, a pic-turesque city in northern Spain. Though best known for Amparito Roca, Texidor was a prolific composer of music for band. His compositions became so numerous that he decided to start his own publishing company. “Amparito Roca” is one of the band world's most recognisable and popular Paso Dobles although there remains some confusion about its origins. Texidor copyrighted the work and had it published in Madrid and also in London. There is a school of thought that suggests it was actually written by the British bandmaster Reginald Ridewood, a Boosey and Hawkes advertisement in 1936 included the work as “Amparito Roca (The Sheltered Cliff". However, the director of the Baracaldo band once directed by Texidor contends that Texidor dedicated the work to a girl named Amparito (diminutive of Amparo) Roca who lived in that area. It had been a good performance and Brian was pleased with the Band’s playing and general deportment. We were grateful for playing help tonight from Tug, Liz, Lisa and David. As always we are also indebted to members of the Supporters Group who provided the front of house services and sold raffle tick-ets.

It has been ten years since the Band last had a recording session when they brought out “Centenary Brass” to mark Bradwell Band’s 100th Anniversary. Next year we will be

commemorating 110 years and it was decided to make a new CD as part of these cele-brations. The venue hired for the recording was the Old Stratford Community Hall. The building was modern and spacious with a high roof. The bottom half of the wall is

breeze blocks, the upper half of a rougher texture and it has a splendid wooden ceiling.

Arriving for a 10:00 playing start the chairs and microphones were in place ready for the session.

For the recording Musical Director Brian Keech had chosen a balanced selection of items

from this year’s repertoire. After warming up with some hymn tunes, the first item to be recorded for posterity was “American Trilogy”. This was followed by the first of our solo-

ists, Ralph on soprano cornet play “Carrickfergus” with Karen up next on flugel with “Concerto De Aranquez”. After several slower pieces it was a bit of a relief to have the chance to let rip with the march “Blaze Away”.

We slowed the tempo down again with “Shepherd’s Song” before playing “Do-Re-Mi” which has proved to be a popular favourite during our concerts this year. As the after-

noon continued we managed to lay down the tracks for “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” and “New York, New York” and ended day one with “Death Or Glory” although by then lips were understandably tired.

For Sunday, which was Halloween, two of our younger members entered into the spirit of the day by dressing up. Sam wore a witches hat and Dan covered his face in white

make-up. After a warm up with a hymn tune we started off with a re-take of “Death Or Glory”. Two more solos were then recorded, Keith on tenor horn with “He Ain’t Heavy,

He’s my Brother” followed by Fraser on euphonium with “Myfanwy”.

“Someone To Watch Over Me” took us up to lunch and after refreshing ourselves we continued with “Raiders of The Lost Ark” and finally “She’s The One”. At the conclusion

of the recording Brian thanks all the players for their efforts over the week-end.

Secretary Robin Allen then had a few words, thanking the members for giving up their

time for the recording. In particular thanks were given to Adam Keech, Sian and Joe who all returned especially for this week-end. There were also thanks given to John the

recording engineer for his patience and expertise and to the members of the Supporters

Club who looked after the catering arrangements for the week-end.

Today was to be the last engagement with Bradwell Band for three of our members. Bryn is giving up to devote more time to his other musical activities, Luke Wilson is join-

ing Stantonbury Brass and Laurence is taking a break from playing. Robin made a pres-entation to each of them as an acknowledgement for the services to the Band and we

look forward to seeing them all again in the near future.

The week-end had been long but I believe most of us enjoyed the experience and look forward to listening to the finished recording. To have 31 playing members present on both days demonstrated a great commitment as people re-arranged their normal week-

end schedules to be present.

We mentioned the 2001 recording at the beginning. You might be interested to know that apart from Brian there were only eight members at the week-end who also played

on the last one. These were Adam Keech, Keith, Sian, Fraser, Lisa, Dave Sanderson,

Robin and Ozzy.

The new CD is expected to be available in April next year.

CLEMENTINE CUSTARD TART.

Serves 8:

175g (6oz) ready-made shortcrust

pastry8 clementines (or satsumas)

2 level tablespoons caster sugar

2 level tablespoons plain flour

12 cardamom pods, split, and

seeds crushed

150ml (¼ pnt) double cream

20cm (8in) flan ring on a baking

sheet

To Serve:

Demerara sugar

Creme Fraiche

Clementines have just come into season.

Roll out the pastry, on a lightly floured

surface, to line the flan ring. Roll it as

thinly as possible, to ensure it bakes prop-

erly. Chill. Set the oven to Gas Mark 7 or

220ºC.

Peel the fruit and slice each one across into

3 pieces. Arrange the slices over the pastry

in two layers.

Mix the sugar, flour and ground cardamom

seeds well, then whisk in the cream and

then spoon over the fruit in the flan and it

will run down between the fruit.

Bake in the bottom half of the oven for 30-35 minutes until just set.

Let it rest for 10 minutes, then cut into wedges.

Serve warm or chilled, sprinkled with demerara sugar, if you

like.Accompany with creme fraiche.

You can also try this recipe with 500g (1lb) forced young rhubarb,

chopped into small chunks, with cinnamon instead of cardamom.
