The Book of James“A Tongue On Fire”

 1 My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall 

receive a stricter judgment.

2 For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a 

perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. 

 

3 Indeed, we put bits in horses' mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body.

 

  4 Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder 

wherever the pilot desires.

 

  5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a 

forest a little fire kindles!

 

 

 

 

6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and 

it is set on fire by hell.

master will make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food in due 

season? 43 Blessed is that

servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 44 Truly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all that he has. 45 But if that servant says in his heart, 'My master is delaying his 

coming,' and begins to beat the male and

female servants, and to eat and drink and be drunk, 46 the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the

unbelievers. 47 And that servant who knew his master's will, and did not 

prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48 But he who did not know, yet committed 

things deserving of stripes, shall be

beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been 

committed, of him they will ask the more.

Psalm 39:11 I said, "I will guard my ways, Lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle, While the wicked are 

before me." 

Matthews 12:33-3733 "Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. 34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the

abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men

may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your 

words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."

Matthew 12:3636 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.

 

Proverbs 15:1-41 A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. 2 The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness. 3 The eyes of the LORD are in every place, 

Keeping watch on the evil and the good. 4 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, But perverseness in it breaks the spirit.

James 1:19-2019 So then, my beloved brethren, let 

every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; 20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of 

God.

words, And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit. 28 Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.

also.

Proverbs 21:23Whoever guards his mouth and tongue 

Keeps his soul from troubles.  

Proverbs 26:20-23   (Living Bible Translation)20 Fire goes out for lack of fuel, and 

tensions disappear when gossip stops. 21 A quarrelsome man starts fights as easily as a match sets fire to paper. 22 Gossip is

a dainty morsel eaten with great relish. 23 Pretty words may hide a wicked heart, just as a pretty glaze covers a common clay 

pot.

them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast 

into the lake of fire.
