HermitcrabsarecuriouscreaturesfoundnearthecoastsofEuropeandtheAmericas. Most aremarine, but a few species, like the coconut crab, live onland and can grow up to 18 inches in length. They are sometimes called“robber crabs” because they are born armor-less and must survive byborrowing the empty shells of dead mollusks as a protective home. Thesecomical scavengers insert their soft abdomens into theabandoned shells anddrag them around for defense. Their strong abdominal appendages areespeciallymodifiedforgrippingtheshellfirmlytotheirbody.

Later in life, hermit crabs are often forced to seek new and bigger shellsbecause theyhaveoutgrown theiroldones,or sometimes theymight changetheir housing whenever they chance upon a stronger shell. But these shellsdon’tofferprotectionfromallpredators—theirmost-fearedantagonist istheoctopus,whichcanuseitsparrot-likebeakstopluckthehermitcrabsoutfromtheirshells.

Both hermit crabs and anemones benefit from this arrangement. Thehermit crab gains the use of potent toxins as a predator deterrent, and theanemone can feed on food fragments producedwhen the hermit crabs eats. This mutual relationship, where both organisms benefit, is known assymbiosis.

Long perceived as themost abominable creature because of its repulsive

The largest flying bird on earth is a vulture, the Andean condor, with awingspread of up to 12 feet, but the turkey vulture is probably the mostgraceful soaring bird in the world—reaching heights of 20,000 feet. Bioluminescenceisanamazingphenomenoninwhichachemicalreactionin living organisms produces light without any appreciable heat. This coollight, usually green or blue, results from a chemical reaction involvingspecializedphosphorus-containingmoleculesintheorganisms.

Bioluminescence is found in creatures ranging from the common fireflyand glowworms, to some species of bacteria, algae, and fungi. This built-inlighting system can also be found in many invertebrate animals like squid, jellyfish, worms, and crustaceans. Bioluminescence is used in nature for a large variety of reasons. Somedeep-sea fish are equipped with fleshy organs that produce luminescence towhich prey is attracted. Years ago in the old Russian Empire, the ruling Czar Nicholas II was

strolling throughhis vastpalace gardenswhenhe cameupona lonely guardstanding at attention in a secluded corner of the greatmeandering gardens.“Whatareyouguarding?”askedtheinquisitiveruler.

The curious Czar then ordered a search to find out why. The palacearchives finally yielded the answer: Years before, Catherine the Great hadplantedaspecialrosebushinthatcornerandshehadfirmlyorderedasentry
