What will happen after 2010• BJD International Steering Committee decided to carry on

beyond 2010

• “Our resolution for continuing as an organisation is to ensure that the valuable achievements, unique programmes and networks which have been built up since the Decade’s initiation, will have a communication platform on which to continue and flourish even after the end of this decade” (Prof. Lars Lidgren, Chairman BJD ISC)

• NANs continue to play a vital role

What will happen after 2010

Carl T Brighton Annual Workshop, Dec 11-14, 2007. Ahmadabad, India – Dr Cyril Toma

• Will operate as a foundation (a non-profit organisation) which is a status that the BJD has already obtained and is free to carry on with.

• BJD has obtained the status of a WHO Collaborating Centre and the plan is to capitalise on that.

• The idea is to give leverage at the national / local level based on the status as a global movement.

• Ideas will be adapted on a regional basis and implemented through regional councils.

Page 16: The Bone and Joint Decade SICOT

What will happen after 2010

• First Step

– To establish a structure for initiating a global musculoskeletal forum.

– Continue to be a multi-discipline, multi-nation network which acts as a facilitator and a catalyst for change.

– Aim to operate as a ‘think-tank’ – the officially recognised source of expertise and information in the global musculoskeletal arena.

Carl T Brighton Annual Workshop, Dec 11-14, 2007. Ahmadabad, India – Dr Cyril Toma

Page 17: The Bone and Joint Decade SICOT

What will happen after 2010

• Second Step

– BJD will encourage increased regional collaboration.– Regional councils (Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific, and the

Americas) may be formed to take the lead on regional issues, and use the existing networks and regional organisations to influence regional policy for musculoskeletal health and science.

– Their focus will be in harmony with the central mission of the BJD, but with a local flavour.

Carl T Brighton Annual Workshop, Dec 11-14, 2007. Ahmadabad, India – Dr Cyril Toma

Page 18: The Bone and Joint Decade SICOT

What will happen after 2010

• Second Step (cont.)

– Foster the development of patient advocacy by the use of existing organisations to assist new organisations, particularly across regions, and in developing countries.

Gap Analysis• 61 Supporting Governments• 61 National Action Networks• 1250 Corporate Partners and participating organisations• Web site www.boneandjointdecade.org• An internet portal project was initiated to develop a web-based

communication and education system between the BJD, its professional societies, their members and patients of the members (15.000 hits / month).

• Newsletter (12.000 Physicians)

Page 22: The Bone and Joint Decade SICOT

Gap Analysis

• 61 National Action Networks

• 96 BJD National Coordinators

• 35 countries in which the networks are not yet recognised by

their own ministers of health as a priority or as deserving

support - even that of the non-financial kind

Page 23: The Bone and Joint Decade SICOT

Gap Analysis

• What are the barriers to policy change? Why doesn’t evidence translate into action?

• Why do policy makers sign on, and then fail to do anything?• We have to face the reality that just talking about the aims of the

decade simply is not enough!!!!
