FROM THE OFFICE OF PRINCIPAL DARRELL BARNES

MR. BARNES

Summer is upon us!!! Even if the weather doesn’t agree!

It was an interesting and exciting year at Newman Grove Schools. We graduated the Senior class on May 11th, consist-ing of 9 graduates. This was a class that had invested much and achieved much during their careers here at NGHS.

Our elementary celebrated their academic successes at the end of the quarter with a Rockin’ Rally down at the football field! We are very proud of the effort put forth by our teachers, sponsors, and coaches throughout the year as they aid our students and athletes in their various pursuits. I wish to also thank those students that put in so many hours of hard work to achieve their goals and to represent our school and community so well during the year.

As most know I am retiring after 40 years in education with the last 5 here at Newman Grove. Mrs. Erin Forre will be taking over the position and I want to wish her well as she steps into this role. Some other staffing changes have taken place as the year wound down, with Mr. & Mrs. Amen taking jobs farther east to be closer to family. Ms. Niewohner is going back to her alma mater to teach. Mandy Nygren is moving out of town and will turn the cooking duties over to her sister Lorie Hodges.

New teachers coming in this fall will be: Mrs. Katie Stone (elementary), Mrs. Tina Sauser (technology, library, etc), Mr. Brett Miller (Science).

Enjoy your summer; fill it with friends, family and reading!

Graduation Ceremonies

Saturday May 11, 2019 marked the 120th Commencement Ceremony of Newman Grove Public Schools. Nine young women and men made up the graduating class of 2019. The total number of students who have graduated from Newman Grove has now reached 3,590. The students were led in procession by the Junior Class Honor Escorts McKenna Haase and Madison Friedrich. "Pomp and Circumstance", the traditional graduation processional, was played as they walked in. The class colors were blue and white, the class flower was a white rose tipped in blue, and the class motto "It matters not what you are thought to be, but what you are.” Superintendent Mikal Shalikow provided a welcome address and encouraged the seniors to return to school and let the educa-tors know how they are doing in future schooling and careers. Sarah Johnson, the class President, urged her classmates to keep pushing forward toward their goals. Sarah Johnson gave the Salutatorian address. She thanked each of the staff members, parents, and classmates for all they have done for them. She also talked about special memories and unique personalities of each of her classmates that made their years together unforgettable. Ms. Theresa Schmedding, the school's Guidance Counselor, presented scholarship awards, and recognized individual students for their achievements. Students who maintained an "A" average throughout high school were Tyson Haddix-Jorgensen and Sa-rah Johnson. National Honor Society Members were Cheyenne Cleland, Tyson Haddix-Jorgensen, Sarah Johnson and Brady Sokol. The Valedictorian of the class Tyson Haddix-Jorgensen and the Salutatorian, Sarah Johnson were given awards. A total of 45 scholarships, with a value of $32,959.75 were presented to 7 students. Tyson Haddix-Jorgensen gave the Valedictorian address. He said his classmates were like ships, now safe in the harbor but have been preparing to set sail out into the ocean. There will be challenges, but the school staff, faculty, parents, and families have helped get them ready for what lies ahead. They have made the most of what they had, and they should be ready for the 3C’s—choice, chance, and change. The Senior slide show was presented. This year’s show was prepared by Cheyenne Cleland and Sarah Johnson. The mem-bers of the class then made special presentations of flowers while the song "Fast" by Luke Bryan was played. Principal Darrell Barnes then presented the class to the President of the Board of Education, Mrs. Jeanie McCloud. After the students received their diplomas, they recessed from the gym to music by Imagine Dragons - "On Top of the World”. Pictured are clockwise: Ms. Schmedding presenting scholarships, Mr. Shalikow giving his welcome speech, Tyson Haddix-Jorgensen giving his valedictorian speech, Sarah Johnson giving her salutatorian and presi-dent’s speeches, junior class ushers (Logan Hodges, McKenna Haaase, Madison Friedrich,

Fourth Quarter 2019 7-12 Students of the Month

Sponsored by BD Ag

Sierra Velarde is in 8th grade and was nominated by Mr. Coby Amen who said “I am very happy to nominate Sierra Velarde for student of the month! She has been a great addition to her class this year and I am so proud of the way that she has conducted herself while in New-man Grove. Sierra has demonstrated a great work ethic as well as an outstanding attitude in both my class and while in her extra-curricular activities. Even though she is new to our school this year Sierra has grown into a leader in her class and has always been considerate to others! She is very deserving of this award!” “Maddison is always kind and considerate to under classmen. Always has a smile on her face to start the day and truly enjoys helping others.” Written by Ms. Theresa Schmedding for Maddison Steffensmeier, who is a senior. Special thanks goes out to our sponsor BC Ag who provided Sierra and Maddison $25 in Newman Grove Bucks to spend. Pictured from left to right are: Maddison Steffens-meier, Bryan Dunlap (owner of BD Ag), and Sierra Velarde.

RULE 10 ANNUAL REPORT INFORMATION (2018-2019)

VISION STATEMENT

B Believe in yourself L Learn to be great U Uncover your potential E Evolve into a productive member of society J Join student extra-curricular activities, get involved A Appreciate people around you Y You can make a difference S Strive for excellence

MISSION STATEMENT

Newman Grove Public School District is committed to providing a safe environment where all students can develop academically. Students will be provided opportunities to acquire skills needed to accomplish their goals and to develop their po-tential as life-long learners, which will allow students to partici-pate in and contribute to society.

BELIEF AND VALUE STATEMENT

Every student will be given equal opportunities to succeed at Newman Grove Public Schools. All education resources and materials students need to succeed are provided and readily available to every student.

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT GOAL

The district began a new cycle of the school improvement process in 2018-2019. The co-chairs of the Continuous Im-provement Leadership Team (CILT) are Donna Miller and Erin Forre. Each year the CILT team leads the faculty to specifically analyze testing results to make decisions to drive instruction and programs. The goals for this cycle are 1. NGPS will increase the number of students showing growth on state and district Math assessments and 2. NGPS will increase the number of students showing growth on state and district ELA assessments. This complex process is ever growing and changing based upon the needs of the students.

STATE-WIDE ASSESSMENT ACCOUNTABILITY

Schools in Nebraska are held accountable for student achievement and progress. Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is a federally mandated law that requires testing of students in grades 3-8 and 11 in the subject categories of Reading, Math and Science to measure student performance and growth, graduation rate is also part of the formula. These components are used to determine the progress and growth of students who are consid-ered proficient in the areas tested. To meet the requirements of this law, Nebraska has established a state accountability system called AQuESTT. Each spring the students of Nebraska are re-quired to take the Nebraska Student-Centered Assessment Sys-tem (NSCAS) to fulfill both prior mentioned accountability measures.

Assessment results are published and archived for each school on the state level and can be found on www.education.ne.gov. When results are made available for public release, Newman Grove Public Schools submits a news article to summarize the results in the local newspaper and dis-trict bulletin. Assessment results are typically available in the fall.

STUDENT PERFORMANCE

The following information has been compiled to show how students of Newman Grove Schools have performed on college entrance exams, achievement tests, and the mastery of basic skills.

COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS (A.C.T.)

The ACT Company provides us with a five-year history of our ACT tests (2013-14 to 2017-18) and Ms. Schmedding has added our 2018-2019 scores to date. Table I shows our average composite scores as well as state and national composite averages. Newman Grove students nor-mally score at or above the national averages and at or slightly below the state averages. Sixty-eight percent of our students took the test the past five years with a composite average of 20.16.

The Class of 2019 has the following scores on the ACT: English: 16.1; Mathematics: 18.7; Reading: 19.8; Science: 20.3; and Composite: 19.1.

ACHIEVEMENT TESTS The Newman Grove Schools uses the NWEA MAP test to measure student achievement. During the 2018-2019 school year, 81% of our students scored at or above the 50th percentile in the four different subject areas on the MAPS achievement tests. We would expect 50% of the students to score at or above the 50th percentile. We are achieving better than average. Table II shows the percentages of Newman Grove students by grade level scoring at or above the National Norms in each subject area. Example: 68 would mean that 68% of the class was at or above the national norm compared to students who took the test nationwide. For most of the classes, we are achieving higher than “average”.

Newman Grove Parent-Teacher Organization

The PTO finished the year off with “Muffins with Mom” on April

18th. Elementary students were invited to bring mom or another representative to have a muffin with before school. They also served a nacho luncheon to the staff during teacher appreciation week.

The NGPTO would like to invite you to participate in “The Save-A-Label” program which helps non-profit organizations raise mon-ey. This is an extremely successful program that over 13,000 non-profit groups participate in. Just save the labels of Best Choice prod-

ucts and our group will earn $.03 for each Best Choice UPC symbol redeemed. Thank-you for your support!

Shell Creek Student Field Trip to University of Nebraska Lincoln

The April 22 (Earth Day) field trip for students monitoring water quality in Shell Creek was a great success.

Unfortunately, Schuyler students were not able to attend, but Newman Grove sent a contingency of eager stu-

dents. All of the presenters were eager to discuss their work with the students and relate it back to issues in Shell

Creek. Surprisingly, most of them have done or currently are doing research on or related to Shell Creek. The stu-

dents met with six UNL professors and with the NDEQ (Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality) moni-

toring coordinator on their trip.

Dr. Tiffany Messer discussed the impact of in-stream and in-lake vegetation on water quality and discussed her

work with floating wetlands as a tool for removing nutrients from lakes and streams. Her work studies efficiency

of various combinations of plant species in removing nutrients from the water column. Students used electronic

meters to measure dissolved oxygen and nitrates in different treatment and control tanks. They then compared

their observations to determine which treatments removed the most nitrate.

Dr. Dan Snow led the students on a tour of the Water Sciences Lab and discussed work being done on measur-

ing emerging contaminants such as antibiotics in flowing waters and work done on age-dating nitrates and other

contaminants in groundwater. His graduate student led the students through a discussion on citizen science and

an exercise in using several commercial kits to measure contaminants in water. In the kit exercise, students were

directed to follow the instructions exactly. However, there was a trick. The instructions were poorly or incorrectly

written, so the results were open to interpretation. This led to a discussion about quality control and data interpre-

tation.

Dr. Jamilyn Poletto showed students her work on the impact of water quality on aquatic life using catfish as an

experimental model. The focus of her work is to assess how stressors (pollutants such as Atrazine) affect feeding

behavior in catfish and their sensitivity to temperature changes and other environmental conditions. The students

used electronic probes to measure temperature, nutrient and dissolved oxygen in various treatment tanks - and

they got to pet a catfish.

Ms. Elyse Watson, the tour guide, discussed various careers in water sciences and natural resources manage-

ment over the lunch hour. She also discussed educational programs and internship opportunities offered through

UNL.

Dr. Thomas Franti gave a presentation on the types and sources of nonpoint source pollutants in different land-

scapes: cropland, forest, grassland, a wheat field, urban residential and urban industrial. He then discussed how

the water cycle and land use affect the flow of nonpoint source pollutants into surface and ground water. The stu-

dents did an exercise using runoff curves to calculate the relative contribution of contaminants from the different

landscapes.

Ms. Colleen Steele discussed Nebraska’s Quality-Assessed Agrichemical Database. The database is a clearing-

house for groundwater samples collected to assess pesticide, nutrient and other contaminates in groundwater. Ms.

Steele discussed the importance of assessing the data for accuracy and coding the data relative to its level of quali-

ty so it can be used or discarded according to the users intended purpose. The students then did an exercise to re-

trieve groundwater data for a contaminant of their choice in an area of their choice.

Ms. Teri James discussed landscape designs and methods to manage water and contaminant flow in an urban

environment. She then led the students on a tour of storm water

management practices, such as raingardens and bio-swales, in-

stalled on campus and discussed research being done to evaluate

and improve the effectiveness of these practices in removing

runoff pollutants.

Mr. David Schumacher led students on a tour of the NDEQ

bio-lab and discussed NDEQ’s monitoring programs and meth-

ods. He demonstrated how to use the Colilert system that NDEQ

uses to analyze water samples for E. coli bacteria. Students

counted fluorescent cells in the detection tray under black light

and compared the numbers to a metrics table to determine the

E. coli count in the water sample. Afterward, the equipment and

supplies were given to the school on loan to use in the students’

water quality monitoring program.

Measles Information Submitted by Teresa Wondercheck, RN

ESU 8 School Nurse

Measles is a very contagious respiratory viral infec-tion that causes a rash all over your body. Measles can lead to serious health problems such as pneumonia, and in rare cases, it can cause seizures or meningitis. Fortu-nately, there is a vaccine to protect against measles. First symptoms of measles are usually fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes. Within a few days, a red rash starts on the face and can spread to the rest of the body. If you notice those signs, tell your doctor right away. The best way to prevent measles is to get vac-cinated. You get two doses of the MMR vaccine. Children usually get the first dose when they are 12 months old, and a second before kindergarten. The vaccine is very effective. Do adults need the MMR vaccine? If you received a measles vaccine in the 1960s, you may not need to be revaccinated. People who have documentation of receiving LIVE measles vaccine in the 1960s do not need to be revaccinated. People who were vaccinated prior to 1968 with either inactivated (killed) measles vaccine or measles vaccine of unknown type should be revaccinated with at least one dose of live attenuat-ed measles vaccine. This recommendation is intended to protect those who may have received killed mea-sles vaccine, which was available in 1963-1967 and was not effective. Check with your doctor if you have any questions. Nebraska has not had a reported case of measles this year. Iowa, Missouri and Colorado are the states close to Nebraska that have had reported cases. The majority of the cases being reported are in unvaccinat-ed residents.
