Started in Harlem by a writer and activist Amir Baraka

Started in 1967

The movement was one of the most important times in Black American Literature

It inspired black people to make their own publishing houses, magazines, and art institutions

MUSIC

Baraka said that jazz was a way that black people could share their expeirence uncensored

Baraka believed that black music could promote black identity and show political struggle

MAYA ANGELOU

an American author and poet who has been called "America's most visible black female autobiographer" by scholar Joanne M. Braxton.

Her most famous book was the, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” which was about her life and struggle being a black girl till the age of 17

NIKKI GIOVANNI

A poet who put an emphasis on the individual and the power they had to make a difference in their lives along with others

Her poetry united the black community cause she wrote about racial pride and respect for family

Still alive today and is a professor at Virginia Tech.

SONIA SANCHEZ

She advocated the introduction of “Black Studies” courses in California

And she was the first to create and teach a course based on black women and literature in the United States

She is a poet who teaches at Temple University
