Friday, July 13, 2018 - 7:00 p.m. Game No. 92 Second Half Game No. 22 Road Game No. 44 Grainger Stadium Kinston, N.C. MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn RHP Cory Abbott (1-4, 4.88 ERA) vs. LHP Joe Palumbo (0-0, 0.00 ERA) Myrtle Beach Pelicans (42-49, 8-13) at Down East Wood Ducks (44-48, 9-13) LACY DRIVES BIRDS TO 6-3 WIN Rollie Lacy allowed just one run over 5.1 innings to spur the Pelicans to a 6-3 victory Wednesday over Carolina. The right-hander recorded strikeouts on each of his first six outs en route to seven whiffs in his High-A debut. The Birds broke open a scoreless e with Andruw Monasterio’s RBI single and Luis Ayala’s RBI ground out to make it 2-0. The Muddies plated a run in the top of the sixth, but Myrtle Beach answered promptly in the boom of the frame on D.J. Wilson’s RBI double. Monasterio drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh and Roberto Caro followed with a two-run single to make it 6-1. Carolina scored twice in the eighth, but could not get any closer as Jose Paulino earned his first career save with 1.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. (POSITIVE) REGRESSION IS COMING Cory Abbo makes the start in Friday’s series opener at Down East. In five oungs so far with Myrtle Beach, the former LMU product is just 1-4 with a 4.88 ERA over 24.0 innings, meaning he is going less than five innings per start. However, there are some underlying numbers that say Abbo has been extremely unlucky with the Birds. Despite registering more ground balls than he did with Low-A South Bend (38.1 percent to 45.5 percent), Abbo’s 4.88 ERA in High-A has skyrocketed from the 2.47 mark he posted in the Midwest League. Abbo’s BABIP allowed with the Pelicans is .391, far above the .300 baseball-wide average. As that mark regresses back down towards .300, Abbo’s ERA should also drop towards the 2.47 ERA he had with South Bend, as well as his current 3.40 FIP with Myrtle Beach. BIRDS ON THE POND The Pelicans were just 5-for-31 (.161) with runners in scoring posion to strand a combined 26 runners on Sunday and Monday. However, the Birds are 11-for-28 (.393) with men on second and/or third over the last two games, padding their numbers in their best hing situaon on the season. Myrtle Beach is bang .252/.331/.348 (.679 OPS) with runners in scoring posion this year, which, while not overly impressive, is far beer than their line of .231/.307/.325 (.632 OPS) in all other situaons. The good news, or potenally bad news, for the Pelicans is that nearly every team at every level across baseball posts similar bang lines regardless of situaon. THE BIG REVIVAL Aſter falling 3-1 in Monday’s series opener with Carolina, Myrtle Beach’s offense has mashed over the last two days against a Mudcats pitching staff that had posted a 2.70 ERA over their previous 22 contests. The Pelicans have scored at least six runs in back-to-back games for the first me since plang six runs in consecuve contests on May 27 and May 29. Over these last two duels, Myrtle Beach has registered 24 knocks, with eight Birds recording mul-hit contests and six compiling mul-RBI games. HOW THE TURNTABLES... HAVE TURNED Rollie Lacy tossed 5.1 innings of one-run ball in Wednesday’s 6-3 victory over Carolina, connuing a sudden trend of strong starng pitching for Myrtle Beach. Over the last 13 games, Pelicans starters have worked 64.2 innings, yielding only 17 runs, all earned, on 48 hits (6.5 H/9) for a 2.37 ERA. The Birds’ starng staff has compiled 57 strikeouts against 25 walks over this span. In the seven games prior to this run, Myrtle Beach starters had posted an ugly 7.62 ERA thanks to 27 runs, 24 earned, on 39 hits (12.4 H/9) in 28.1 innings (30 K, 13 BB). CONNECT FOUR Thanks to a staff that ranks at or near the top of the Carolina League in nearly every single pitching category, the Pelicans do not necessarily need to score a plethora of runs to win games. Sure enough, when Myrtle Beach plates at least four tallies in a game, the Birds have a 33-9 (.786) record. This success has been exemplified of late; In the 66 games since May 11, the Pelicans have pitched well, posng a collecve 3.38 ERA (482.1 IP, 406 H, 7.6 H/9, 213 R, 181 ER). Myrtle Beach has scored at least four runs in 25 of those contests, and the Birds are 23-2 (.920) in those games. PELICAN POINTS Former Myrtle Beach right-hander James Norwood made his major league debut on Wednesday with the Chicago Cubs at San Francisco’s AT&T Park. Norwood took the loss in 1.2 innings, striking out two. The New York City nave pitched in 35 games with the Birds across the 2016-17 campaigns, going 4-0 with a 2.23 ERA (48.1 IP, 44 H, 18 BB, 49)... The Chicago Cubs signed former SIU Saluki Max Schell to a tryout to be the Pelicans’ bullpen catcher. RHP Cory Abbott (1-4, 4.88 ERA) vs. LHP Joe Palumbo (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (42-49, 8-13) at Down East Wood Ducks (44-48, 9-13)

LACY DRIVES BIRDS TO 6-3 WIN Rollie Lacy allowed just one run over 5.1 innings to spur the Pelicans to a 6-3 victory Wednesday over Carolina. The right-hander recorded strikeouts on each of his first six outs en route to seven whiffs in his High-A debut. The Birds broke open a scoreless tie with Andruw Monasterio’s RBI single and Luis Ayala’s RBI ground out to make it 2-0. The Muddies plated a run in the top of the sixth, but Myrtle Beach answered promptly in the bottom of the frame on D.J.

(POSITIVE) REGRESSION IS COMINGCory Abbott makes the start in Friday’s series opener at Down East. In five outings so far with Myrtle Beach, the former LMU product is just 1-4 with a 4.88 ERA over 24.0 innings, meaning he is going less than five innings per start. However, there are some underlying numbers that say Abbott has been extremely unlucky with the Birds. Despite registering more ground balls than he did with Low-A South Bend (38.1 percent to 45.5 percent), Abbott’s 4.88 ERA in High-A has skyrocketed from the 2.47 mark he posted in the Midwest League. Abbott’s BABIP allowed with the Pelicans is .391, far above the .300 baseball-wide average. As that mark regresses back down towards .300, Abbott’s ERA should also drop towards the 2.47 ERA he had with South Bend, as well as his current 3.40 FIP with Myrtle Beach.

BIRDS ON THE PONDThe Pelicans were just 5-for-31 (.161) with runners in scoring position to strand a combined 26 runners on Sunday and Monday. However, the Birds are 11-for-28 (.393) with men on second and/or third over the last two games, padding their numbers in their best hitting situation on the season. Myrtle Beach is batting .252/.331/.348 (.679 OPS) with runners in scoring position this year, which, while not overly impressive, is far better than their line of .231/.307/.325 (.632 OPS) in all other situations. The good news, or potentially bad news, for the Pelicans is that nearly every team at every level across baseball posts similar batting lines regardless of situation.

THE BIG REVIVALAfter falling 3-1 in Monday’s series opener with Carolina, Myrtle Beach’s offense has mashed over the last two days against a Mudcats pitching staff that had posted a 2.70 ERA over their previous 22 contests. The Pelicans have scored at least six runs in back-to-back games for the first time since plating six runs in consecutive contests on May 27 and May 29. Over these last two duels, Myrtle Beach has registered 24 knocks, with eight Birds recording multi-hit contests and six compiling multi-RBI games.

HOW THE TURNTABLES... HAVE TURNEDRollie Lacy tossed 5.1 innings of one-run ball in Wednesday’s 6-3 victory over Carolina, continuing a sudden trend of strong starting pitching for Myrtle Beach. Over the last 13 games, Pelicans starters have worked 64.2 innings, yielding only 17 runs, all earned, on 48 hits (6.5 H/9) for a 2.37 ERA. The Birds’ starting staff has compiled 57 strikeouts against 25 walks over this span. In the seven games prior to this run, Myrtle Beach starters had posted an ugly 7.62 ERA thanks to 27 runs, 24 earned, on 39 hits (12.4 H/9) in 28.1 innings (30 K, 13 BB).

CONNECT FOURThanks to a staff that ranks at or near the top of the Carolina League in nearly every single pitching category, the Pelicans do not necessarily need to score a plethora of runs to win games. Sure enough, when Myrtle Beach plates at least four tallies in a game, the Birds have a 33-9 (.786) record. This success has been exemplified of late; In the 66 games since May 11, the Pelicans have pitched well, posting a collective 3.38 ERA (482.1 IP, 406 H, 7.6 H/9, 213 R, 181 ER). Myrtle Beach has scored at least four runs in 25 of those contests, and the Birds are 23-2 (.920) in those games.

PELICAN POINTSFormer Myrtle Beach right-hander James Norwood made his major league debut on Wednesday with the Chicago Cubs at San Francisco’s AT&T Park. Norwood took the loss in 1.2 innings, striking out two. The New York City native pitched in 35 games with the Birds across the 2016-17 campaigns, going 4-0 with a 2.23 ERA (48.1 IP, 44 H, 18 BB, 49)... The Chicago Cubs signed former SIU Saluki Max Schell to a tryout to be the Pelicans’ bullpen catcher.

ABOUT CORY

-Abbott went to Serra High School in San Diego and served as the team’s primary catcher until his junior year. Even after setting a school record with a 0.73 ERA as a junior and posting a 1.52 mark as a senior in 2014, Abbott was eyeing Division II schools to play collegiate baseball. However, Loyola Marymount assistant Bryant Ward, who is now at UCLA, spotted him on a trip to watch another player. Soon after, Abbott signed with the Lions.

-During three seasons at Loyola Marymount, Abbott went 17-8 with a 2.69 ERA over 56 appearances, including 28 starts. He struck out 196 batters over 217.2 innings.

-Abbott’s breakout season came as a junior in 2017. He was named a First Team All-American and WCC Pitcher of the Year after going 11-2 with two complete game shutouts and a 1.74 ERA in 98.0 innings (15 starts). Abbott set school records for lowest opposing batting average (.173) and strikeout rate (11.9 K/9) to help the Lions to their first WCC title since 2000.

-The crowning moment of Abbott’s junior season came in a start on March 25, 2017 against BYU. The San Diego native fired the first perfect game in LMU history, striking out 13, throwing 106 pitches and only going to four three-ball counts.

2018 SEASON

-With Myrtle Beach, Abbott has struggled early in games. In the first and second innings, he has yielded 10 runs on 17 hits in 10.0 innings for a 9.00 ERA. From the third inning on, he has surrendered just three runs on 10 hits in 14.0 frames for a 1.93 ERA.

-Abbott was promoted on June 5 to Myrtle Beach from Low-A South Bend. At the time of his promotion, Abbott was ranked second in the Midwest League in batting average against (.207), third in WHIP (1.01) and fourth in ERA (2.47). Among the circuit’s starters, he had the third-best strikeout rate (10.8 K/9).

-The Chicago Cubs’ Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May, Abbott made six May starts with South Bend, going 3-1 with a 2.67 ERA (9 ER in 30.1 IP). He struck out an organizational-best 41 batters against just 11 walks. Opponents hit only .227 against him over the month.

-With South Bend, Abbott overpowered right-handed batters. These same-sided hitters batted just .185 with a .474 OPS in 116 plate appearances. In comparison, left-handed hitters hit .246 with a .743 OPS in 69 plate appearances.

2017 SEASON-After he pitched 98.0 innings for Loyola Marymount during his junior season, Abbott was limited to just 14.0 frames over five starts for Short Season Class A Eugene.

ADDITIONAL CAREER NOTES-As a sophomore at Loyola Marymount in 2016, Abbott pitched to a 5-5 record and 4.24 ERA over 14 appearances, including 12 starts. He only struck out 34 hitters in 70.0 innings.

-As a freshman in 2015, Abbott made 27 appearances and one start. The right-hander compiled a 1-1 record and 2.37 ERA, recording one save and 32 strikeouts against 10 walks in 49.1 frames.

-Abbott majored in sociology while at Loyola Marymount.

-Offensively as a senior at Serra High School in San Diego, Abbott hit .421 with 23 runs scored and 27 RBIs.

-Born and raised in San Diego, Abbott has one sister, Aunica, and two brothers, Dylan and Brandon.
