Host Families Needed

SOL is a unique and innovative language school and educational charity that provides exciting English language courses for students from Eastern and Central Europe and beyond.

We are looking for caring host families in the Bideford and Barnstaple areas who would be willing to offer accommodation and some of their time to enable our students to experience family life in North Devon. We need both regular and occasional hosts.

Our students have a full daily programme from Monday to Saturday with Sunday being a day to enjoy with their host families. The courses are from 7 to 10 days in length starting in February through to December.

If you feel you may be interested in being a host family and earning some extra money, please contact us.

Welcome to the September edition of The Link. It’s the start of a

new academic year and I would like to wish everyone who is going back to school, starting a new college or university good luck for this coming year. Good Luck also goes out to my

youngest son who is starting college. However, I’m pleased to say that he will continue to help me by keeping the website updated and monitor our social media sites so he is going to be

kept busy! We will also be updating our website software so that it will be easier to read all the content from a mobile or tablet as I am aware that this can be an issue at the moment.

We had a great response to last months anniversary competitions both in the magazine and on twitter. Thank you to everyone who took the time to enter. I will be contacting the

lucky winners soon and you will be able to find a list on www.thelinkpublications.co.uk. The lucky winners will have some great prizes from our local businesses to enjoy,.

I really can’t believe we are in September already, this year has gone so quickly and it would be lovely if this month we get

some good weather so sadly missed in August. Fingers crossed...have a good month

Loving Libraries by Nick Arnold

This month’s serving of local Library news is as jam-packed as summer fruits in an under-sized jam-jar. And just as sweet and tasty

Let’s get sweet

with the good news – there’ll be FREE WI-FI in

Devon Libraries by the end of September. And

APPLEDORE LIBRARY tops the list. The dramatic announcement came at

the Devon Friends Group Conference. The Conference also heard plans for the mutual set to run Devon Libraries next year. If you want to

know more there’s info at all libraries. Last month the head of the mutual, Julie Dent visited Appledore Library for talks with Friends of

Appledore Library. She was impressed with the refurbished building for which Walter’s Emporium in Myrtle Street has now raised

more than £30,000. She also heard plans to show visitors a film about Appledore at the Library.

And talking about the Library, on Thursday 3rd

September the Men’s Group meets in the Events Room at 7.30 pm. All gentlemen are welcome – bring drink and a small donation to

cover room hire. The Library is once more the heart of the famous Appledore Book Festival. As we go to press the only events in the Library that haven’t sold out are: Tuesday 29th Sep-

tember – 10 am Comedy Writing Workshop with Tony Kirkwood and Friday 2nd October,

12.30 pm, John Godrich talks about his fa-ther’s battles in the Frist World War. See bro-chure or ring the box office (01237) 424949 for

tickets and availability.

Over in NORTHAM LIBRARY Friends of Northam Library will be sprucing up the

building and could

do with your support. Just ask Lisa in the Library

how to join them. On Friday 25th September there’s

another marvellous Macmillan Coffee

Morning at the Library starting at 10 am and next month Lisa is planning three exciting events. I’ll tell you about 14th and 21st October

next time – for now all I’ll say is that on 9th October there’s a walk called the Three Libraries Challenge. It will link our local

libraries and tickets cost £2.50. Feeling energetic? Well, it’s a good excuse to front-load your energy intake with those yummy

W.I cakes at the Coffee Morning!

TORRINGTON LIBRARY hosts Bouncing Bees sessions for toddlers at10 am on

Tuesdays. On Monday 14th September The Reading Group meets at Glentor, the Abbeyfield Home in Villa Road at 10.30 am.

Ask at the Library if you want to join them. There are Tuesday Bounce and Rhyme for tiny tots from 15th September and Kate is

planning more visits from school groups for next term

At BIDEFORD LIBRARY Thursday morning pre-schooler Story Sessions begin with the new school term and the one at 9.30 am on 10th

September is unmissable. Two singing Bideford Community Support Officers will join the fun!

Elsewhere in the month the usual groups

are gathering but it’s a good idea to check

that the Feel Better with a Book group

really is meeting on a Wednesday at 10.30 am.

Finally here’s three lovely photos of summer

craft events. Alma reports crafty fun at Appledore, whilst in Northam where 200 kids joined the reading challenge valiant volunteer

Ruth was super-busy. Finally in Bideford, fun has been the order of the jam-packed happy loving libraries day

Looking for Alaska - John Green

Fitting in at a new school is never easy, but Miles

Halter’s life is transformed the day he starts at Culver Creek Boarding School and meets the eponymous

Alaska Young. She’s beautiful and smart and funny and incredibly sexy, thinks Miles. He’s a smitten kitten

but she is more than just a little bit complicated and confused. First comes love and then comes tragedy -

and we’d expect nothing less from the author of the blockbusting ‘The Fault in Our Stars’, John Green.

How will Miles cope with life on a rollercoaster ride? It’s a really funny book and like your first love, will

stay in your heart for a long time.

Goodbye, Mr Chips - James Hilton

As the students move through the years and eventu-

ally leave school, there are some masters and mis-tresses who live out their days in the same

establishment; the school becoming as much a part of their lives as their own family. Mr Chipping or ‘Mr

Chips’ teaches classics at Brookfield School and is something of an institution. The kids think classics

and Latin are antiquated subjects, and that their master has perhaps ‘had his chips’, but he perse-

veres as a staunch believer in discipline and education. Time does move Mr Chips on though, as

he falls in love with the young and challenging

Page 25: The Bideford Link Sept 2015

Katherine and worries about the world that lies beyond Brookfield as times change and life continues.

I’d Tell You I Love You, but Then I’d Have to Kill

You - Ally Carter

The Gallagher Academy sets itself apart as being for ‘exceptional women’ and the high achievers among

us. It’s actually a school for future spies. Here the young ladies learn combat and martial arts, code-

deciphering and even have the odd bit of tuition in chemical warfare. Cammie is one such highly-

intelligent student who’s being primed for a life in espionage. However, she can’t escape the fact that

she’s also just a girl who’s got a bit of a crush on a boy. How does she go about concealing her identity

from the one person she might be falling in love with? It could be a case of mission: impossible.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie - Muriel Spark

Most people would say that they have one teacher

who really sticks in their mind and who had a significant impact on their future. Unconventional

and unorthodox schoolmistress Miss Brodie nurtures the high-achieving ‘Brodie set’ and has a great I

nfluence over her girls, through her charm and her guile. She fills her lessons with personal accounts of

her love life, her politics and her unique slant on life and the future of the Brodie set. Miss Jean Brodie

has become an iconic literary figure and has been brought to life both on the stage and in film, by

Dame Maggie Smith no less. It’s a back to school must. Stargirl - Jerry Spinelli Another unusual and left-of-centre teenage girl now, in the form of ‘Stargirl Caraway’. She arrives like a little sprinkling of sunshine at Mica High, strumming her ukulele and taking care of her pet rat. Leo Borlock falls head over heels for her and for a while it looks as though everyone at the school has a soft spot for Stargirl. But, teenagers are fickle, and as soon as you’re up they’ll bring you crashing back down to earth again. The one thing that might save Stargirl is the one thing that could also destroy her: Leo thinks she needs to blend in. Can you make someone be ‘normal’? Can you pretend to be something you’re not? This enchanting book celebrates our quirks and eccentricities and should be read by everyone- whether their ‘freak flag’ is flying, or it’s hidden. The Catcher in the Rye - J.D. Salinger Holden Caulfield is cheesed off. The original personification of teenage angst, he narrates a couple of days in his life after being expelled from his stuffy prep school, and generations of adults take him into their still-adolescent hearts. The fact that, to this day, it remains on banned book lists should give you some indication of the power of this anti-establishment novel. Teenagers tend to either revere Caulfield, or absolutely detest him and can’t see what his problem is. Either way, it makes for controversial reading, and a great escape from the ‘olds’ who’ll just get on your case.

CALLING ALL SINGERS! ENCORE! hold Open Auditions ENCORE! is a theatrical singing group made up of performers from the Bideford and Barnstaple area, many of whom have sung as principals in major musical theatre productions in North Devon and be-yond. Over the last few years the group has had great success with their theatrical concerts which mix

four-part harmony singing, duets and solos in events which help raise funds for local charities. Due to a couple of members leaving the North Devon area, the group will be holding open auditions for new singers on Wednesday 16th September in Lavington United Reform Church, Bridgeland Street, Bideford at 7.30pm. Potential auditionees will be required to perform a solo taken from musical theatre, as well as being given the opportunity to sing in harmony with the rest of the group. If you are interested in auditioning, or would like further information, please contact Caroline Hunt on

01237 429798, or email [email protected]

Visit of Swansea Excelsior Ladies Choir In October last year the Torridge Male Voice choir was invited to sing in Swansea with the Excelsior

Ladies Choir. This choir, formed in 1941, has sung internationally and been part of many musical festivals. In the past 15 years the choir has raised over £40,000 for various charities. The concert in Swansea was a great success. The Torridge Choir always gets a good reception in

South Wales. The ladies arranged, in turn, to visit the Little White Town. They had hoped to come in May but both choirs had busy schedules and so they had to put it off until this month. The concert in aid of the Devon Air Ambulance will be in Bideford Methodist Church, High Street, at

7pm on Saturday 26th September. Tickets are £5 and will be available at the door.

THE APPLEDORE SINGERS - A NEW SEASON It’s the beginning of autumn and the Appledore Singers are starting their new season, so here’s an invitation to all ladies who enjoy singing: why not come along to one of our Monday night rehearsals (7.15-9pm at Appledore Baptist Church) and experience singing with us? We always welcome new

members and have a variety of musical arrangements on offer, from gospel and show-stoppers to Top Ten hits. You’re sure to enjoy yourself! For more information contact our Musical Director, Pam Beechey on 01237 420652 or see our website: theappledoresingers.co.uk ‘Seek a Smile thro’ Song’

NEW SEASON FOR BIDEFORD MUSIC CLUB

In October Bideford Music Club begins its new season of concerts at Bideford Methodist Church Hall, High Street. Once a month until March there will be concerts of very varied music played by artists

more accustomed to playing in The Wigmore Hall and other international venues. First up on October 7th will be The Marlebone Trio, a classical wind trio of oboe, clarinet and bassoon, followed by violinist Katy Stillman with Simon Lane on piano in November. Well-known and admired Harry the Piano (Paul Harris) will give the Christmas concert on 2nd December. He can “play any tune in any style”, “a keyboard genius” and performs on “Friday Night is Music Night” on BBC Radio 2 – don’t miss him!

For the first time, the January concert will be on a Sunday afternoon, the 10th. Those who do not like dark and cold evenings will enjoy listening to the guitar duo of Tom Ellis and Laura Snowden and others could perhaps bring their young people to listen to a grown-up concert!

Trombonist Peter Moore is the youngest ever BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2008 and he was appointed co-principal trombone of the LSO in 2014 at the age of 18. He will perform in February with pianist Jonathan Ware accompanying him.

We are fortunate in North Devon that these international artists of such high calibre are happy to come and perform to us and we need to try and ensure our audiences match them. You do not have to be a member to come to concerts but there are four and six concert memberships available as well as single

concert tickets. For members only there will be a pre-season talk given by John Hobbs introducing the music and musicians of the season ahead with a cream tea afterwards. Programme brochures and membership details can be obtained from Lindy Johnson 01237 423112 or email:

[email protected]. Please note for those who already have their brochures, Katy Stillman is a violinist and will not be playing the oboe.

Do you ever find yourself shouting at the television when the “great and the good” are telling us how we ought to be thinking about the big issues of the day? Would you like to have your say on such

issues? Well, a new group in Barnstaple could offer you that opportunity. THINKING MATTERS! is a new, Barnstaple-based discussion group that meets on the fourth Wednesday of every month, at the Cedars Inn, Bickington Road, Sticklepath, EX31 2HE which aims to provide the opportunity for an open

forum discussion on a subject of topical interest. Each month’s topic, whether serious or more light-hearted, will be chosen by those attending the meetings. All points of view will be respected, so everyone can expect to have their say. There is no membership fee, (£1 voluntary donation on the

night), just come along, make yourself known and join in an evening of lively debate and stimulating conversation. For further information please contact the Meetings Organiser Barry Zussman on (01237 474225) or visit the website. www.thinkingmatters.org.uk We look forward to welcoming you.

The first meeting will be on Wednesday 23rd September at 7.30pm, when the subject will be ‘Referendums: Power to the People?” ST. MARY’S CHURCH, APPLEDORE THE CHURCHYARD - AN APPEAL FOR ASSISTANCE

Each year we ask all residents and friends of Appledore to contribute to the Churchyard Appeal. We are always immensely grateful to all those who respond to this request, for the funds raised enable us to pay for the grass to be cut regularly during the growing period and the trees and pathways to be maintained.

But there is, of course, so much more that could be done. We are, therefore, endeavouring to put together a team of helpers, who are willing to contribute their time and efforts to improving the overall appearance of the Churchyard. We want it to be a place of beauty and tranquillity, where villagers or

visitors can walk or sit, contemplating the achievements of our forebears and admiring the well-kept grassy walkways, bordered by wild flowers. We are aware that many graves are lovingly cared for by relatives of the deceased and we would not wish to impinge upon the peace and privacy of such visits to

the Churchyard. There are, however countless graves, which, as the years pass by, no longer have any remaining relatives to tend them. We hope to update the plan of the Churchyard and assist in tidying up tombs of earlier generations, which may otherwise become neglected and forgotten. If you feel able to

help in any way, please contact one of the Churchwardens, who would be so pleased to hear from you. Further advice and suggestions would be much appreciated. Churchwardens - Tom More (01237 475044) Sue Austin (01237 421281)

A Dairyman's walk to the Counties of

Cream Teas

Poole dairyman Roger Bromby, 76, has worked in the dairy business his whole life, from the horse

and cart days as a local lad, delivering milk to doorsteps for farming families, to founding and running S&R Dairies and serving five thousand

local customers from 1968-1999. Now fifteen years into his retirement, he is taking on a new challenge. Roger will embark on a 'Walk of Memo-

ries' along the South West Coast Path from Mine-head to Poole, ending at the Sandbanks Ferry, a distance of 630 miles in total. Roger is supported

by a long-time family friend Peter Mortlock, who has worked alongside Roger since his early days. The walking challenge is raising funds to support

two charities close to their hearts and both Roger and Peter would like the public to get behind the challenge and help them raise money and aware-

ness for the 2 valuable causes. The Charity to benefit are The Shane Alderman Charitable Trust, founded in the name of Peter's grandson, the

Trust supports disabled and paralympic athletes. The challenge will also raise money for Poole Hospital Charity’s Children's Unit Fund, in memory

of Roger and wife Sheila's daughter Adele who passed away aged twelve after a short and tragic illness in 1974. Poole Hospital children’s unit pro-

vides expert paediatric treatment and assessment for thousands of local children. Charitable dona-tions are used to improve facilities for the children

and on occasion additional equipment that the NHS doesn’t cover. Roger will embark on what he sees as his 'Walk of

Memories' at the end of the summer, taking with him his memories of a lifetime spent working for his own and other local dairies, his many custom-

ers served throughout Poole and surrounding areas and of course his memories of Adele. Roger and his wife Sheila, with the help of

others, hope to use Roger's walk to raise as much as possible for these two important causes. Roger will start the walk on Tuesday 1st September from

Minehead and hopes to complete the 630 miles in the following weeks. Roger and Peter would love company “Anyone interested in joining us on the

walk for a day, a week or even the whole distance, please contact Peter on 07710 623464 the more the merrier”Donations to be shared by the two

good causes can be made using https://charity checkout.co.uk/1128710. Press enquiries to Peter Mortlock 07710 623464
