I reflected with him about the countless times I stood with families over the grave of a loved one or at the shiva house that followed. That valley was the thoughts, the feelings, the sense of loss, the emotional depths that the mourners were experienc- ing at that moment. Walking, in my opinion, was simply more than grieving – it was helping each mourner experience the valley on his or her own level so that they could then move forward through it to begin climbing the next mountain, experiencing the challenges and the joys of life. But first, they needed to experience their pain of loss, the emotional reality, and the stories of life, both with laughter and with tears. Rabbi Kushner then asked me, What does, Thou preparest a table before me?mean?I wondered: is it the table in Gan Eden that I constantly reference as to what might appear in both Gan Eden and Gehinnom. In both places sumptuous meals are prepared. In both places, the individuals have no ability to serve or feed themselves. In Gehinnom the meal has not been partaken of, whereas in Gan Eden individuals are satiated by the delicious meal. The difference is simply based on the community of those who are there, how they share, how they are kind to one another, and provide for one another. Rabbi Kushner suggested to me to look at the words more carefully, and in doing so he taught me that the words are not about Olam Ha-bah, the World to Come, but about Olam Ha-zeh, our world right here. The words reflect how individu- als and the community have the divine responsibility to provide for the individuals who are walking through the valley, with meals of comfort and consolation, which involve preparation, orchestration of calendars so that many days would be covered for the individual, and comradery. In many ways, we are all experiencing that same walking through the valleywear- ing our face masks and social distancing. G-d never promised a world only of joy and celebration. Pain, suffering and fear, also are a part of our world. What was promised was that people do have the ability to prepare tables of hospitality with a welcome and a kindness to help the traveler through that valley. I shared with some of you during one of our Coffee without Coffeesessions, that I believe that our current normalwill be a part of our lives for some time, our walking. My wife expressed that to me when she brought home a few more packages of cotton face masks for us all to have extras. Several years ago, I had the pleasure of studying with

my colleague Rabbi Harold Kushner. As the rabbi laureate in the next town over, Rabbi Kushner was always welcoming. With his newly published book in hand, he shared with me some of his thoughts within it related to the 23rd Psalm. Most of us have the ability to reference its words by rote. Needless to say, we most

often relate its words to attending a funeral, based on the verses “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures,” or “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.” Rabbi Kushner asked me to ponder what it means to walk through the valley of the shadow. I reflected with him about the countless times I stood with families over the grave of a loved one or at the shiva house that followed. That valley was the thoughts, the feelings, the sense of loss, the emotional depths that the mourners were experienc-ing at that moment. The words reflect how individu-als and the community have the divine responsibility to provide for the individuals who are “walking through the valley,” with meals of comfort and consolation, which involve preparation, orchestration of calendars so that many days would be covered for the individual, and comradery. The Beth El Bulletin

Our Mission Statement: The mission of Congregation Beth El is to foster a welcoming, diverse, and egalitarian community within the framework of Conservative Judaism, and to enrich the lives of its members through worship, learning, fellowship, celebration and tikun olam—healing the world.

Dear Congregants, Rabbi Kideckel has been part of our community for several weeks now, and we’re doing our best to give you an opportunity to meet with him, either through Zoom or outside with social distancing. Since his arrival, Rabbi Kideckel has been meeting congregants in groups of 10 to 20 people in out-door venues with social distancing and masks. His warm, upbeat personality, with a bit of humor thrown in, has been evident. These meetings have been fun and entertaining, and as Nancy Brand commented, in getting to know Rabbi Kideckel, we are also getting to know more about each other in these “Coffees without the Coffee.” If you haven’t yet signed up for a “Coffee with the Rabbi” please call the office (860-442-0418), Judy Engel (860-912-0600) or me (213-505-6756). We’ve seen Rabbi Kideckel’s more serious side in Shabbat services. So far, I have received incredibly positive feedback on Shabbat services. Congregants have commented on his beautiful, powerful voice and his thoughtful and interesting Torah discussion. It is clear that one of his many strengths is as a teacher, and in his ability to engage with congregants. If you haven’t yet done so, please attend a Shabbat service and give us your feedback/opinion. Rabbi Kideckel and I have also been discussing High Holiday services. Given the age of our population and the fact that singing is considered to be a particularly hazardous activity for spreading COVID-19, Congregation Beth El will be holding its High Holiday services virtually (Zoom) this year. The High Holi-day Task Force held its first meeting July 15th, which was attended by Rabbi Kideckel, Diane Maran, Va-lerie Popkin, Michael Sherb, Lenny Cohen, Judi Goldberg, Elliot Kimmel, Ella Sackett and me. Rabbi Kideckel has also been working with Cantor Sanford Cohen to plan a meaningful and beautiful High Holiday experience. For those of you who feel comfortable gathering outside, we’re planning to have an in-person Tashlich service (with social distancing and masks), and you will be able to hear the non-virtual shofar blasts at that service. We haven’t yet picked a location, so stay tuned! In closing, I can guarantee you that you will have a High Holiday experience like no other in

2020/5781! Let’s hope that it will be our first and last High Holiday experience by Zoom!

small groupings to learn about each other and learn how to grow together. I appreciate all of your efforts to “preparest the table,” either by hosting or by attending either in person or in a Zoom conference call. You have invited me into your lives in your backyards, porches, homes, and restaurants both in person and on Zoom, for get-togethers and services. While we are continuing this month to engage in more of these sessions, I welcome the opportunity to meet you as individuals with a more personal opportunity to be your rabbi, within each of your own comfort level (not to mention mine.) Rav Yosef, a wise rabbi of today, penned a simple yet wise thought. It is the mantra I have always used and that I will continually use as your rabbi, not only during our “new normal,” but also G-d willing, as the 23rd Psalm states “You have anointed my head with oil,” with a vaccine protecting us all. Here is Rav Yosef’s thought: “Every hand that we don’t shake must become a phone call that we place. Every embrace that we avoid must become a verbal expression of warmth and concern. Every inch and every foot that we physically place between ourselves and another, must be a thought as to how we might be of help to that other, should the need arise. “ L’shalom, Rabbi K

Zooming the Dinyan by Dana Kline

I wasn't there when it began. Who thought of the name Dinyan? Meeting for pizza at the Recovery Room. Driving to Beth El for a minyan. So, I called Nancy and she was most generous in filling me in on the details. It all began with Klezmer music. There was a concert at the Yiddish Center in Massachusetts, and Irene and Mickey were going. Did she want to join them? Nancy loved the lively klez tunes and was delighted to have a chance to hear the concert.

Whose idea was it? No matter. Irene and Nancy decided to ask a few people to consider coming to a weekly min-yan with the idea that there might be someone who wished to say Kaddish for a loved one or for the Yahrzeit of a parent or spouse.

And so a tradition was born. I don't remember when I joined this lively group of women, but Wednesdays were set aside for pizza and prayer. We all sent in our reservations to Sunny who sent out a weekly announcement. The list contained many names and all were invited to join us. Sometimes we were 11 and sometimes we were 5. On a few occasions Jerry spotted us and shared our Gorgonzola salad and Florentine eggplant pizza. The staff knew us and always reserved our table, making sure we had delicious focaccia bread brought out as we sat down.

The conversation was always spontaneous and over the years we celebrated our simchas and supported each other when life presented sorrow, always accompanied by a group donation to Beth El.

When we were still at 660 Ocean Ave. we stopped by the gift shop to pick out a bar or bat mitzvah present, a wed-ding gift or a mezuzah for a housewarming party. Nancy always had the key as this was hers and Nadine and Har-riet's baby. I bet they miss their buying jaunts to the Big Apple.

Later we moved to Shaw St., gathering in a small intimate room around a conference table. Rena was always ready to lead the service, and her constant care for our group was appreciated. I'm not sure how this part of our service began. Was it Rena who encouraged those who were reciting the Kaddish to say a few words about our loved ones? A story. A memory.

My Dad's Yahrzeit was late in June this year. And I was comforted in knowing that I would meet up with the min-yan via zoom. But more than that, I knew I would be transported back to my hometown, at least virtually.

You see with COVID-19 in the air, Marty and I decided to remain in Sarasota. It was a difficult choice. There were many reasons for me to return. Loved ones we wanted to see, even if socially distancing. Meals I wanted to cook for friends who needed a lift. And to be honest, I was a bit homesick.

The Dinyan has always been a date I try and keep. Over the years, it has given me a chance to sit quietly, in a sa-cred space, and approach prayer as best as I can.

That night, my Dad’s Yahrzeit, I reflected on this gentle man - his love of family, friends, food, and golf. What hap-pened next was an added bonus. Myrna told a story about Dad that ends with him treating his buddies to corned beef sandwiches on the 9th hole of the New London Country Club. Bob said he even had a crab cake. We're from Baltimore. I wonder what else was in that golf bag. And then there was one more story that night. A member of Beth El who had passed away many years ago, was mentioned on the Yahrzeit list. Stephen added his tale of how Mr. And Mrs. Sheriff always greeted him at their door with a welcome smile and a handful of candies. It seems that they had lost their own children and relished the idea of Stephen stopping by to say hello.

For me the Dinyan has always been about connection and community. Zoom has allowed me to be there in the room where it happens. For that I am very grateful. Oh, and by the way, we have a big crowd.
