From Page 1wardrobe officers found the gun Colemanhad brandished, which turned out to be arealistic-looking gas-powered BB gun, loaded and ready to fire.

Mr Hunka pointed out that Colemanalso had to be dealt with for possessing aknife at the George Eliot hospital inNuneaton in April, which he denied buthad been found guilty of after a trial in themagistrates’ court.

He had gone there with a friend whowas seen to have the knife, so with theagreement of a security guard he hadtaken it from him – but instead of gettingrid of it, he put it under their car, andfailed to disclose it when the police askedabout it.

Mr Hunka added that at the time of theoffences Coleman was subject to a two-year suspended prison sentence for pos-sessing heroin and crack with intent.

Ian Windridge, for Coleman, made thepoint that the gun was an imitation firearmand had not been discharged, adding: “Itwas produced to reinforce the debt.”

James Doyle, for Kowalik, said: “Hehas demonstrated remorse for his foolish-ness. It wasn’t his gun, it was Coleman’s,but he accepts he was the custodian of it.

“He had been working as a ware-houseman and as a delivery driver. Hemet the co-defendant socially and it isseems he fell under his spell anddescended into the darkened recesses ofdrug-dealing.

“He has fallen foul of the temptation ofeasy money and the false glamour ofbeing a drug dealer.”

Coleman, 24, of Salford Close,Coventry, who also pleaded guilty to pos-sessing heroin and crack cocaine withintent to supply them, was jailed for four

years for the drug offences, with a consec-utive 14-month term for the gun – on topof 12 months of his suspended sentence, which he was also ordered to serve.

Kowalik, 22, of Tulliver Street,Coventry, who admitted further charges ofhaving a bladed article and possessingcrack cocaine with intent, was given two-and-a-half years for the drugs, ninemonths for the gun and three months forthe lock knife.

Of the incident with the gun, JudgeBarry Berlin said: “You, Coleman, threat-ened him with a black handgun. He wasterrified by this, as anyone would be.”

The churchman, who has been dis-missed from his post, also had 121category B images.

Judge Anthony Potter adjourned the

POLICE are showing theirsupport for RemembranceDay by sporting the sym-bolic red poppy on theirpatrol vehicles.

Officers from the Warwick-shire force were among thosewho went to war and neverreturned.

Remembrance Day on 11thNovember recognises the sacri-fices made by the armed forces inconflicts over the past century, and the annual poppy appeal sup-ports the Royal British Legion’swork helping veterans.

Chief Constable Martin Jelleysaid: “It is at this time of year thatwe reflect on all those who havegiven the ultimate sacrificeduring the Great War as well as insubsequent conflicts.

“The red poppies are a way ofremembering the sacrifices thatwere made, including two of ourown officers, Special ConstableWilliam Merrick and PC William

Rowlands, who died on 17thMay, 1941, during the SecondWorld War.

“They were killed by an explo-sion while extinguishing incen-diary bombs during an air raid.

“Last year we displayed thepoppy on our fleet of police vehi-cles, and due to such positivefeedback from our communities

and from armed forces veteranswho approached our officers toreminisce about their time in theforces, we are displaying the pop-pies again to show our support.”

Philip Seccombe, Warwick-shire Police and Crime Commis-sioner – who was a reservist inthe armed forces and also chairsthe West Midland Reserve Forcesand Cadets Association – added:“This is a very fitting way toshow our respect for all thosewho serve in our armed forcesand to remember those who gavetheir lives defending our country, including those who worked forWarwickshire Police, the War-wickshire Regiment and the War-wickshire Yeomanry.

“The annual appeal to help vet-erans organised by the RoyalBritish Legion is both hugelysymbolic and helps to fundmuch-needed help for veteransand I hope this will encourageeven more people to give theirown support this year.”

Students learnabout careers

MORE than 75 businesses, universi-ties, charities, colleges and appren-ticeship opportunities were show-cased at a careers fair in Stratford.

The fair was organised by StratfordSchool’s careers advice and guidancemanager Sarah Miles.

She said: “It is important that stu-dents get the chance to speak directlywith employers to discuss what typeof skills, experience and qualifica-tions are expected when they startapplying for jobs.

“Employers can have a significantimpact on students in opening theireyes to the range of opportunitieswhich are available and the best

routes to start their careers when theyleave school.”

Headteacher Neil Wallace added:“We are very proud that our innova-tive approach to careers educationcontinues to reach new heights. Theimpact of this was brought homeseeing groups of Year 10 students dis-cussing which degrees they wanted tostudy and reading university prospec-tuses in the canteen at lunch, whilsthearing others talking enthusiasticallyabout apprenticeship opportunities.

“This was reinforced by hearingfrom exhibitors how impressed theywere with the proactive engagementof our students.”

Festival’s much morethan just storytellingPUPILS from Henley MontessoriPrimary School were among thou-sands captivated by tales from awhole host of voices at the Univer-sity of Worcester’s annual story-telling festival for children.

A record number of school-children took part in the two-weekevent, now in its 13th year, witharound 5,000 youngsters from 55schools in Warwickshire, Worces-

tershire, Gloucestershire and theWest Midlands.

They were entertained by awide variety of storytellers, authors, illustrators and theatreacts, designed to engage childrenwith stories, literature andlearning.

One of the most popular was theage-old classic Jack and theBeanstalk.

A host of different performersentertained the youngsters, including storytellers PeterChand, Ben Haggarty, Amy Dou-glas, Daniel Morden, Sally Tongeand Cat Weatherill. Authors AbiElphinstone, Caroline Lawrenceand Kristina Stephenson and thepoet Atinuke were featured, aswell as shows from a number oftheatre companies.

This year we are particularly excited to be introducingHealth and Social Care (BTEC) to our curriculum offer. This has added an additional option to our post 16 package and will pro-vide students with a pathway into a range of different professions, espe-cially in the caring sector.

Alongside this we retain a strong suite of academic A levels, with Mathsbeing particularly popular with traditionally strong outcomes. T

he opportunity to mix and match A level and vocational qualificationsensures that we are able to personalise oursixth form offers to enable students to moveon to their chosen post 18 destination. I

n addition, our extensive enrichment opportu-nities allow students to develop employmentand personal skills through activities such asour whole school sponsored walk and SixthForm led charity week.

This provides a number of leadership oppor-tunities that compliments their academicstudies to ensure they are fully prepared forlife after A Levels.

Students will be available to discuss theseevents and other aspects of Sixth Form life atthe open evening.
