Years from now, we might remember 2016 as the year drones officially took over. Thanks to continued leaps in technology, dramatic decreases in pricing, and an undeniable appeal, the world of commercial drone piloting has exploded into a bona fide phenomenon. Never before have there been so many aircraft in the sky—everything from indoor mini-drones to high-speed racers capable of 70 mph. If you’re one of the many people looking to join this high-flying craze, or if you’re already a pilot but thinking about switching disciplines—say, from drone videographer to FPV racer—we’ve compiled a list of the best brands to help get you off the tarmac and into the air.

Best brands for beginners

Whatever your goal is, all pilots start out at the same place: as beginners. And as a be-ginner, your main objective is learning how not to crash. With that in mind, novice drone pilots will want to learn with something that is both tough and relatively inexpensive. Tough, so that it can survive a head-on col-lision with a piece of furniture or tree; inex-pensive, so your bank account can survive even if your drone doesn’t.

UDI RC is a brand that offers some of the most capable and cost-friendly drones on the market—many of them in the $50-or-less range. One such example is the U818A model, which is a great beginner drone. It’s easy to fly and features a four-loop frame de-sign that protects the rotors from damage. If you do manage to hurt it, props and other ac-cessories are cheap and easily replaceable. As an added bonus, the U818A comes with an integrated camera, so you can get the feel of aerial recording while you’re learning the ropes of flight.

Now, while the U818A is a great choice for beginners, it’s also emblematic of the UDI

brand. Almost all UDI drones feature simi-lar functionality and protection, making any of their quadcopters a strong candidate for entry into the world of drone piloting.

Toy and mini-dronesDrones—or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)—typically have certain characteristics that qualify them as such: flight stabilization, GPS functionality, etc. Technically speaking, these traits are what make a drone more than just a radio-controlled flyer. However, thanks to the popularity of the market, there are quite a few R/Cs out there being billed as drones that don’t quite have the specs to live up to the name. However, just because a plane doesn’t have all the features of a tra-ditional drone, doesn’t mean it can’t be fun or useful. There is a whole market of innova-tive flyers out there—call them toy or mini-drones—that are as every bit as cool and capable as their older siblings.

In addition to these toy R/Cs, Parrot also of-fers more sophisticated vehicles. The BeBop 2 quadcopter, for example, is a great inter-mediate drone for pilots who want to record high-quality video without shelling out high-er costs. FPV racing

First-Person-View (FPV) racing is one of the hottest trends currently sweeping through the aerial R/C community. Using specialized goggles and transmission equipment, FPV racing puts you inside the cockpit, where you’ll have to rely on quick reflexes and split-second decision-making to navigate courses and best your competition—all at speeds of up to 70 mph!

Like traditional drone piloting, when begin-ning with FPV racing, it’s best to start with an introductory package, something that’s tough, reliable, and won’t break the bank.
