1 APPLICATION FORM THE BESSIE BELLAMY PARKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND I. Purpose This scholarship was created by the 1986 Annual Conference to honor and perpetuate the memory of Reverend Bessie Bellamy Parker (19121986), the first woman ordained in the South Carolina Conference. Its purpose is to provide scholarship assistance to women at United Methodist seminaries who are preparing for ordained pastoral ministry in South Carolina. One or more scholarships will be presented annually to women students who demonstrate promise for the kind of ministerial excellence that Bessie Parker embodied and pioneered. II. Eligibility To apply one must meet the following requirements: Female Certified Candidate for ordained ministry Committed to ministry in the local church in South Carolina Completed one year full time (minimum 24 hours or equivalent) in an approved United Methodist seminary Currently enrolled for the second or third year of seminary Maintaining at least a “C” grade average III. Selection All applications will be reviewed by a Scholarship Committee appointed by the Chairperson of the Board of Ordained Ministry. Selection of the recipient of the scholarship shall be based on the following criteria (in descending order of importance): (1) Selfunderstanding of one’s ministry and intended future direction. (2) Promise for ministry (3) Financial need related to particular personal situation (4) Academic performance in seminary

THE BESSIE BELLAMY PARKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND 

I.  Purpose 

This scholarship was created by the 1986 Annual Conference to honor and perpetuate the memory of Reverend Bessie Bellamy Parker (1912­1986), the first woman ordained in the South Carolina Conference.  Its purpose is to provide scholarship assistance to women at United Methodist seminaries who are preparing for ordained pastoral ministry in South Carolina.  One or more scholarships will be presented annually to women students who demonstrate promise for the kind of ministerial excellence that Bessie Parker embodied and pioneered. 

II. Eligibility 

To apply one must meet the following requirements: •  Female Certified Candidate for ordained ministry •  Committed to ministry in the local church in South Carolina •  Completed one year full time (minimum 24 hours or equivalent) in an 

approved United Methodist seminary •  Currently enrolled for the second or third year of seminary •  Maintaining at least a “C” grade average 

III.  Selection 

All applications will be reviewed by a Scholarship Committee appointed by the Chairperson of the Board of Ordained Ministry.  Selection of the recipient of the scholarship shall be based on the following criteria (in descending order of importance):

IV. Procedure 

1.  Complete standard “Application for Ministerial Education Fund Service Loan” form for the current year.  MEF Forms may be obtained from Rev. Gene Ammons, Box 129, Cheraw, SC 29520.  If you have already submitted this form to MEF, please send a copy of it with this application. 

2.  Submit a copy of your Mentor’s report addressing your promise for ministry.  If you wish you may ask her or him to expand the statement or write another. If you feel that another person in a supervisory capacity can offer a more accurate assessment of your potential, you may submit an additional statement from that person. 

3. Write a brief (100­300 words) statement in response to the following questions: 

A. What is your own understanding of your ministry?  Include current areas of particular interest and commitment. 

B.  Why do you feel that you need this scholarship?  Since you have already indicated on the MEF application form the data regarding details of your financial situation, you do not need to repeat that here.  Rather, describe particular circumstances, relationships and responsibilities that create your own personal financial situation and need for financial assistance. 

4.  Submit an official copy of a current  seminary transcript. 

5. Mail completed application and supporting documents post marked by MAY 1st
