Recollection The season of Autumn is a time of recollection. We remember God's goodness as we give thanks for the harvest; we remember the saints of old and those who gave their lives in the service of their country. Recollection is at the heart of church life. Every week in the benefice at least one of our churches celebrates Holy Communion when we recall the love of God for us in His Son who died for us, who rose again and we wait with expectation for him to come again. Historically, recollection formed part of an individual's spiritual life. This has been retained in the Christian Contemplative tradition. However it may be something from which we could all profit. We mark and recollect family events such as birthdays, marriages and anniversaries of death. How much more should we be mindful of Christ's love and presence with us each day? The first stage of recollection is attentiveness to the voice of duty, to the law of God. We all know what is right and wrong, we just need to follow the right way. The second stage is recollection of the promptings of the Holy Spirit in our inner lives. This comes by practise and by listening to that inner voice. The third and final stage is recollection of the love of God. Thus perfect recollection consists in abiding in the love of our God. In the words of Jesus “Abide in my love”. This autumn may we grow in recollection, living at peace in the love that God has for us all. With every blessing, Revd Stephen Coulter can be contacted at the Vicarage, Stourpaine. 2013

RECTOR: THE REVEREND STEPHEN COULTER STOURPAINE VICARAGE - TELEPHONE 480580.

With every blessing,

BENEFICE WEATHER

RAINFALL - July/August 2013 MEASURED AT LAZERTON FARM since 1963

2013 Over the last 50 Years July Highest Lowest Average

1.33 in (33.9mm) 6.12 in (155.8mm) Jul 2012

0.31 in(7.8 mm) 1983

2.00 in(51.0 mm)

Following the trend since the end of March, this month gave us another below average month ……..for rainfall. A 26 day period ending on 24th July with a thunder storm was rainless apart from 1.4mm on 2nd July. The rest of the month’s rain fell in the last 8 days. Temperatures, on the other hand, were high 20s for the first 3 weeks. Much watering of veggie patches and borders all round. What a difference from last year!

August Highest Lowest Average 1.26 in(32.0 mm)

6.18 in(157 mm) 1997

0.42 in(10.7 mm) 1981

2.43 in(61.7 mm)

And so to August with another below average month. Two thirds of the rain fell in the first week leaving many rainfree days for the rest of the month. Watering has remained an important part of the routine for veggie patches even though temperatures are heading, gently, towards autumn. Fruit trees are showing the benefit of more normal pollination conditions in spring; it is great to have an apple crop again and for the first time we have a full pear tree.

DURWESTON YOUTH CLUB . We have managed to keep the club going through the summer holidays despite numbers being low at times. It’s difficult with numbers as some go away or have other family commitments. However, for those who did come there was tennis, rounders, football and general chilling out on the new cradle swing in the Durweston playing field. A highlight was the 70th anniversary of Dorset Youth Association on Monday 22nd July. We were invited to take along a few children to a garden party celebration at Moreton Gardens near Dorchester. His Royal Highness the Earl of Wessex KG KCVO and other special dignitaries were there. His Highness and followers were super with the children and spent time speaking to each and everyone of them. All the clubs in Dorset were present and the event was designed to promote the work of the charity and to celebrate the legacy of

providing services for young people and communities in Dorset for the last 70 years. The children will remember it as a special day in their life. Youth Club continues to run every other Thursday. Dates: October17th (only one this month due to Hall prior booking), Nov 14th,28th, Dec 12th. See you there. Rog and Jules. CHURCH NEWS Do you sing or play an instrument? Extra singers are always welcome in the Benefice Choir, we are on tour round the Benefice for Christmas Carol Services at each church and will meet for rehearsals in November. Some of us also sing regularly in the choir at the 11 o’clock service on the 3rd Sunday of each month throughout the year at Durweston, and 18.00 Evensong at Stourpaine on the same day. Any pianists or musicians with own instruments out there – come and see me about playing in an occasional group at Durweston for the family service . Good sense of rhythm to lead the hymns more important than virtuoso standard playing. Please contact me for further details. Alison Davies, Benefice Music Director. Despite trying for several months, I have not been able to fill 50% of the coach capacity, therefore our trip would not be a viable proposition. I contacted Highclere to find out how many group bookings were still available but I was informed that all slots for 2014 were now full! It was suggested that I try again in a few months when the 2015 slots become available, however I do not think I will repeat the exercise. There are some individual bookings available for 2014 for those of you who still wish to go. Jenny
