Dear Parents and Carers

I hope you are all well and have avoided as much as possible the colds,

sniffles and worse from this winter. Though this term and the next are short

ones they are very busy. Can I take this opportunity to praise and congratulate

Chobe in the primary phase and Frederico in the secondary. Both have

worked incredibly hard to gain great achievement.

Chobe entered a competition to write a poem about the holocaust. Her

thoughtful and moving poem won the competition and in January she read her

poem at the Derby Holocaust Memorial Event at the Quad in the presence of

the Mayor. This is an amazing achievement. Well done Chobe.

Frederico entered the city wide election to become Youth Mayor of Derby

2018. Federico with his charismatic hustings got through to the final vote.

The election was voted on by all 11-18 year olds in Derby City and I am very

pleased to announce that Frederico has been duly elected as Youth Mayor for

Derby. This is an honour and achievement, well done Frederico.

Punctuality to school is vital for a prompt start to the day.

Can I remind parents and children that school starts at:

8:30am Secondary Phase – Period 1

8:40am Primary Phase – Challenge Activities.

Children should be on the school site 5 minutes before their day starts.

Finally, for those of you who follow twitter, the school has a twitter account

@BemroseSchool. Please follow us and find all of the current news that link

to other school accounts for items of interest.

We wish you a good half term and look forward to seeing your children on

Monday 26th February 2018.

Yours faithfully

Upcoming Roadworks

The next phase of the building project is to connect power and services.

This is at least a two week job and will begin on Monday 19th February with

an anticipated completion of 2nd March. During this time there will be traffic

lights on the bend of Rowditch Avenue by the primary phase. Can I ask that

parents avoid arriving by car during this time where possible as the road will

be heavily congested between 8:00-9:00am and 2:30-3:30pm.

The diagram below shows the works being undertaken.

Roadworks on Rowditch Avenue

Year 10

En

terprise D

ay On Monday 15th January, our Year 10 students took part in an

Enterprise Day which was led by a company called Learn by

Design.

Learn by Design bring education to life by providing curriculum

and extra-curricular support workshops to schools both directly

and on behalf of business. They use a range of innovative and

creative methods to engage and motivate learners to bring out

the best in them.

An ex professional football player Tony Lormor was part of the

delivery team and spoke of his plans and aspirations and the

importance of having a Plan B, since he was injured and could

no longer play his favourite sport.

The students took part in five activities which helped to develop and build

their skills in a variety of areas. The activities were as follows :

Sales and Marketing : which introduced the students to the tricks of the

trade and the techniques used in targeting adverts. Students then worked

in small groups to design their own adverts and develop a sales pitch

designed to build confidence and presentation skills.

Personal Target Setting : included four pieces of cutting edge sports testing

equipment to help our young people to understand more about the

principles of setting SMART targets. The students were given progressive

levels of detail to measure targets and to establish a trend. The session

closed with target setting techniques and application.

Business Planning : involved a number of tasks to help the young people

identify the key skills that entrepreneurs possess. Prioritisation was a

highlight with a focus on high profile entrepreneurs to demonstrate the

differences in career path.

Finance : looked at cash flow using a simple but effective model. The

benefits of a variety of finance sources was covered along with examples of

capitals costs and revenue expenditures.

Who wants to be an entrepreneur? – a quiz with a twist. The students used

wireless remotes, our Year 10’s were guided through series of questions

based on the workshops.

The day was a success, with positive feedback from staff and students.

The students conducted themselves in a positive and energetic manner,

demonstrating confidence and representing the school in a respectful

manner.

Meynell Langley Farm

The Bemrose School is looking forward to forming links with Meynell

Langley Farm.

Our partnership will give students the opportunity to gain field experience

in various subjects and also Curriculum Enrichment opportunities for the

whole School, including KS2.

There will be an addition to Meynell Langley Farm in March with an

inaugural planting event of “The Bemrose Coppice”, comprising some 30

trees, to officially kickstart what we hope to be a long and happy relation-

ship between us.

On Friday 26th January, the students went to the polls.

The whole school voted for the Youth Mayor of Derby.

This was an incredible experience for the students to experience the

democratic voting process.

What made the day even more special was our very own Frederico (year 11)

was standing and we are very pleased to announce that Frederico has been

duly elected as Youth Mayor for Derby. Congratulations Frederico.

Young Driver Scheme.

The Young Driver Education Programme is delivered to Sixth Form students by police

and fire services in a bid to put the number of

serious road traffic incidents in Derbyshire into

reverse.

Organised by the Derby and Derbyshire Road

Safety Partnership the four one-hour sessions

are designed to reduce the number of people

killed and injured on our roads. In 2016, 390 people were killed or seriously injured in

road traffic collisions on Derbyshire’s roads and 104 of these casualties were in

incidents involving young drivers.

The workshop included information on roadside testing, the consequences of drink,

drug, driving, how their actions and behaviour as a passenger can have an influence on

how the vehicle is driven and distractions including mobile phones and seatbelts.

Head of Post 16 Marcus Wesley, said: “Educating our young drivers to be safe and

responsible road users is incredibly important and these sessions taught our students

that passing their driving test was only the start of this process. The sessions delivered

by the DDRSP were excellent, they really helped them think about these responsibilities

and understand the risks involved."

Mr Minto took three Year 8 students, Kaine, Ashley and Adam to a city gymnastics

competition on Friday January 12th.

The competition involved them performing: a vault, a ‘body management’ routine

and a floor routine.

The boys were slightly anxious at first as this was the first time they had competed

in any form of gymnastics competition but they showed great attitude to perform

against experienced gymnasts and in front of a large number of people.

Unfortunately Callum could not attend on the day due to injury but should be

commended for his effort in preparing for the competition.

Congratulations to all the boys for their amazing effort.

Let the school know in advance if your child is going to be late or needs to leave school early.

Section 444 of the Education Act, 1996 says:

“If a child of compulsory school age, who is a registered pupil at a school, fails to attend regularly

at the school, his/her parent is guilty of an offence.”

If the reasons given for your child’s irregular school attendance are not satisfactory, then the Ed-

ucation Welfare Service may take legal proceedings against you for failure to comply with the

Law.

to £2500 and/or 12 weeks imprisonment.

The Law also says that “Lateness constitutes absences!” It is held that persistent lateness is not

“full time” education. (Hinchley v. Rankin 1961).

Remember: Secondary Phase starts at 8.30am

Primary Phase starts at 8.40am
