I am the new pastor appointed to Bethel United Methodist Church. My wife, Janet, and I are excited to be here and we are looking forward to meeting you and getting to know you personally. We are thankful for the wonderful reception we have received already, thankful for this great community, for our new home near the high school, and especially thankful for … nametags! Your name is important, and I will be doing my best to remember all of your names, but I would not say that this is one of my greatest strengths. Nametags are a big help, however, and I appreciate Pastor David’s encouraging you to wear them back in the May Bellringer! Thanks for your support and patience during this time of transition. You may not realize it, but along with the 182 names in the Bethel directory, I am also trying to go beyond that and remember other names as well. Let’s see, Larry and Mary live across the street; Mike, Barbara, Vera and Vivian live two doors down; Seth is the Branch Manager at Wells Fargo; Mike is the High School principal; Christie is the executive director of WeCan; Kenny is the one who tells jokes and does impersonations at the Wednesday dinners; Lisa works as a checkout lady at Jubilee; Christie cleaned our last motel room and has a little boy that is 6 years old; etc. etc. etc. Now, some of you may be wondering why I even try to remember the names of all of these people, especially the name of the checkout lady or cleaning maid. Well for one, I do believe that Christ values each and every one, and I am to do the same. And two, somewhere in my past, the following story was shared with me; it made a lasting impression on me, and goes like this… During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one: 'What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?' Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. 'Absolutely,' said the professor. 'In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say 'hello.' I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned - her name was Dorothy. I encourage you to take time to pay attention to the ones who wait on you, who serve you in big and small ways, and who often go unnoticed and unthanked. Remembering their name may be all it takes to lighten their day. It is one more way we can reflect the love of Christ to those around us!
