POTENTATE “2018” Lloyd S. Doughty, II

Nobles, Ladies and Friends of Bektash Temple Shrine, It is with so many emotions that I send pen to paper and write this, my final message as Potentate of Bektash. Time has flown. Seems like yesterday that I was installed with all the pomp and circum-stance that is what we do. I think about the many things I wanted to accomplish and while it has been successful year, there is so much more to be done. Last evening Donna, Mac-Kenzie and I attended the tra-ditional Potentates Last Sup-per. As I remarked last even-ing, I looked over the assem-bled group and could not get over the fact of what a di-verse group was there and, in

reflecting at that moment, what a diverse group our Nobility is. It has been my privilege and honor to be your Potentate and I can only hope that at least is some way or in some instance I have made you proud to be a Shriner at Bektash. There is much work that needs to be done however. Our future leadership will address those matters, working together, mov-ing forward. Our finances and reporting has made great strides and this process must and will continue. Of this I am most proud and would be com-pletely remiss if I did not com-mend Treasurer George Langwasser for the job he has and continues to do!! Thank you George!! Our building needs work. The focus this year was the renova-tion of the Ladies Room in the front of the building. Additional-ly we have installed baby changing stations and I am sure the future holds more updates and renovations to include other restrooms and flooring to name just a couple projects. Membership and rekindling the fire of our present membership to become more involved will continue to be another area of focus. We must do this work as

the future of our Fraternity and Philanthropy depends on it. I am certainly proud of the strides made in this area this past year but this work will nev-er be over and we must contin-ue to be welcoming to our past and most importantly to our fu-ture Nobles. On the fundraising front I would be remiss if I did not congratu-late Chief Rabban John and La-dy Deb Puckhaber and the Fez-Tival Of Trees team for another wildly successful event. It ap-pears that from early reports that another double digit per-centage increase occurred dur-ing this Fez-Tival. And while Chief John and Lady Deb did a magnificent job, to not mention and recognize Past Potentate Ted Dooley and Lady Barbara would be a gross mis-carriage of justice. Barbara and Ted have been the leaders’ ex-officio of this event for years. Their expertise and hard work throughout the years for this event and Bektash as an entity will be extremely difficult to rep-licate. We thank them both and wish them all the best in their retirement!! Please do not be strangers though!! We want to see you!!!!

As always Lady Amy Free-man, Lady Kristen Lowe and Lady Judy Hill were amazing. Past International Shrine Yacht Club Commodore Noble Ray and Lady Betty DesRochers kept the volunteer tables manned throughout. THANK YOU!! To the Chefs, too numerous to mention singularly, the Candy Cane Café food was simply delicious as usual!! OUT-STANDING JOB!! And so the time has come for me to move on to the last events of my tenure as Poten-tate. First is the annual Christ-mas Party on Saturday De-cember 8th. If you haven’t made your reservations PLEASE DO!! Donna and I have been working with our friends at Allan’s of Boscawen and Scott Spradling and his Band to make this party a truly momentous occasion. Please come and enjoy the holiday spirit with your fellow Nobles and their ladies!! And please feel free to bring friends!! Love to welcome and see you ALL!! Please see the details on page 25 in this issue!!

...continued from page 9 On Monday evening the 5th our monthly finance meeting will be held in the Nobility Room. We try to begin at 5:30PM as schedules allow and this will be the case. ALL are welcome to attend and gain further insight into what we are doing as a Temple. And yes YOUR questions and input are always welcome. The final Stated Meeting of the year and one of the most important duties I will do as Potentate will be on Monday December 10th. Nobles, please make sure to attend this meeting as we nominate and vote for our next year’s slate of officers!! Lady’s please also come and join in the festivities and congratulate our future leaders on their election!! Nobles, Ladies and friends, it’s time for Donna, MacKen-zie and I to call it a year. What an honor and privilege it has been for us. As I wrote earlier, the time has simply flown by. We will never forget the help, guidance and most importantly the fun we have had this year being with all of you.

THANK YOU also to the BEST DIVAN in Shrinedome!! You all are truly special peo-ple doing a tremendous job. Please keep working together, moving forward!! A SPECIAL THANK YOU to Dixie Thoroughgood. You are simply amazing!! And finally, one last indul-gence. Recorder , Past Poten-tate Guild “Bushie”Hill, you have been my rock. I couldn’t have done this without YOU. You know the void you have filled this year and I truly appre-ciate YOU sir. THANK YOU!! So allow me to conclude by saying that we must never for-get that what we do “To enrich the World” has and will contin-ue to be the greatest gift we can give!! There is no doubt in my mind that we have the greatest Shrine Temple in the Fraternity doing great work for the absolute finest and greatest philanthropy in the world, Shriner’s Hospitals for Chil-dren!! May you all have the Merriest and Happiest Holiday’s ever and all the best for the coming year!! Fraternally, Ill. Lloyd S. Doughty, II Potentate

December is here and the end of another year here at Bektash Shriners. The year of 2018 was a good one for us with another success-ful “Fez”tival of Trees. This was our 18th year

hosting this event and I can tell you from experience that this money maker has not let us down yet. We like it because the public has picked it up and enjoys our efforts and we benefit from their interest. Nice combo.

The Bektash membership wants to thank Ted and Barbara Dooley for their hard work and devotion to the “Fez”tival of Trees for the last eighteen years. They have told us that this year, 2018, will be their last as the chair people. They will be back next year to help out as much as they can. I will say this for everyone, Ted and Barbara, thank you from all of us for the wonderful job you have done with our “Fez”tival of Trees. Good job, “well done”.

I will now ask you all to give a big round of cheers for Nobles Ill. Mark A. Simard, PP and HP & P Noble John Freeman for their time, material and labor contributions to the front La-dies Bathroom and to Noble Cedric H. Dustin Jr. for the size-able monetary gift for the same project. Thank you all, No-bles, for what you did to make Bektash better.

Please do not forget our Christmas Party on December 8, 2018 and our Stated Meeting on December 10, 2018 featuring our Election of Officers for the year 2019. I hope to see you all there.

Judy & I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Yours in the faith, Guild “Bushie” Hill, PP Recorder

"Fez"tival of Trees

Committee Meeting Date

Tuesday, December 11, 7:00 PM at the Shrine Center In the Nobility Room

Shriners and their Ladies are invited.

FEZTIVAL—THANK YOU

Nobles, Ladies and Friends of Bektash, Thank you for your enthusiastic support of the 2018 Feztival of Trees. Your contributions of time, energy and generous donations made the Feztival very suc-cessful and make it possible for us to fulfill our mis-sion.

This event would not have been a success without your involvement. Due to your support more reve-nue was raised this year than ever before. We could not have done it with out you! The success of the Feztival is a reflection of the dedication and enthusi-asm that you display on a continuing basis.

On behalf of the Feztival of Trees Committee, we look forward to working with you again next year.

" NOBLES " We invite YOU to become a Member of the HIGH ROLLERS We continue to grow our membership, our trucks ( now at eleven )and requests by communities to participate in their parades. We need part time and full time Nobles who want to drive these vehi-cles who want to put a smile on their faces and those parents and children who line the many streets and the many parades we par-ticipate in. Your requirements are as follows: If you are not legally blind or like to wear a blindfold while driving you probably don't need to contact us. Otherwise, if you breathe and can see out of at least one eye we need you. Even though some of us have 20/20 vision If your eyesight is 20/60, 30/90. 40/80 then you'll fit right in with the rest of us. After your first trial period, which is driving in one parade and after the smile on your face relaxes enough that you can respond you will be asked to purchase a hat, jacket, polo shirt and t-shirt. The unit pays for half the cost. We are so proud of our new trailers which we pull in each parade. Watching children jumping up and down with excitement as we come down the road and in many cases hear cheering and clap-ping as we go by is truly heart warming. If your wives or children would also like to participate by driving the vehicles that pull the trailers would be a great help. So, if you are interested to join a fun loving and professional group of men then please contact Ray Barbuto @ 603-391-1287 or [email protected]

THE100MILLIONDOLLARCLUB The 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children have provided lifesaving and life-changing medical care to more than 800,000 children, regardless of their ability to pay. The money to provide these needed services at 22 hospitals comes from many sources: community donations; fundraising events; investment income; and support from the Shriners Inter-national. As health care costs increase, Shriners Hospitals needs your help, more than ever, to continue to provide more specialized care, offer medical education and conduct more research. Too many people believe that if they cannot donate or leave a large sum or money, their gift will not count. Every contribution helps. In order to encourage donors to contribute to Shriners Hospitals for Children, the HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR CLUB was es-tablished in 1972. The club is named for its goal of adding 100 million dollars to the endowment fund through gifts or bequests of $100 or more.

HOWTOJOIN There are three ways to become a member of the 100 Million Dollar Club: (1) By contributing $100 or more to Shriners Hospi-tals for Children; (2) By having your will include a bequest of $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children; or (3) By adding a provision to an existing will leaving $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Shriners. Please fill out the form on the right and send your contribution to Bektash Shriner's, ATTN: Recorder.

WHATYOURECEIVE Each donor receives a handsome 100 Million Dollar Club certifi-cate. By contributing $100, you can feel like a million, knowing that you have helped to ensure that Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren will be able to continue helping children in the years to come.

SPRINGFIELD HOSPITAL PATIENT STORY—JESSICA

If there is one thing to know about Jessica, it’s that she is a dedicated athlete, participating in cross country running, downhill skiing and softball. These activities take a lot of breath. So when Jessica began having trouble breathing while competing, her family began to worry. “It was really hard to watch because she loves her sports so much and she was literally in tears when she’d finish a ski race.” Jessica’s mom said. “We wanted to do everything we could to fix the problem.” Jessica’s parents brought her to the doctor, where she was diagnosed with asthma. After receiving that diagnosis, Jessica’s breathing prob-lems persisted. Eventually, she was taken to a pulmonologist, who said Jessica’s breathing difficulties were not due to asthma. They were at-tributed to her sunken chest.

Page 45: THE BEKTASH NEWS · 2018-11-30 · December 2018 THE BEKTASH NEWS OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF BEKTASH SHRINERS—CONCORD, NH Member Northeast Shrine Association Volume XXXI, Number 12

December 2018 43

Jessica was diagnosed with pectus excavatum, a condition where the breastbone is sunken into the chest, leaving a dent. X-rays revealed that Jessica’s sternum was so deep in her chest that it was only a few inches from her spine, putting pressure on her lungs. Jessica’s doctor recommended she come to Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren — Springfield for treatment. In June 2018, she had surgery to cor-rect her sunken chest. A metal bar was inserted under her breastbone to move the sternum away from her spine. The bar holds the breastbone in its normal position and allows for easier breathing. When Jessica woke up, the results were immediate – it was much easier to breathe. She spent a week recovering in the hospital. During that time, her school was holding elections for senior class president, for which she had been running. Unable to be there in person to give her speech, Jessica wrote a letter. Her friends read it aloud to her classmates on her behalf, and she won the election Four months after her surgery, Jessica convinced her doctors to let her go back to cross country running a little early. Since she has returned to the sport, Jessica has taken four minutes off of her personal record. She’s looking forward to continued running and skiing, knowing she can breathe much easier.

In Memoriam

MELVIN E REEVER MILFORD, N.H. Deceased: 09/13/2018 Born: 11/02/1925 Created: 01/15/1972

To the promised land our friends have gone, To the land of perfect rest;

Their work is done—and the setting sun Has sealed their life’s request.

They have left this earthly strand, For the house beyond the sea,

Though the past is gone, they will still live on To us all—Sweet in our Memory.

WILLIAM H PRENTISS WEST CHESTERFIELD, N.H. Deceased: 05/12/2018 Born: 07/02/1929 Created: 06/08/1974
