What an evening it was . . . . The lobby looked like a neighborhood park with City signs and tubs oficed soda pop. Thunder and lightning called us inside to the ballroom, which was festooned (asalways) with partner banners from churches, schools, ministries, agencies, and businesses. . . .

Part of SLF’s mission is to help generate resources for ministries, schools, nonprofits, andcommunity initiatives. For three years — from 1999-2001 — SLF refrained from hosting its ownfundraiser. The strategy worked. Well, sort of. SLF did succeed in meeting its budget without afundraiser. And SLF did help others raise money — more than $2 million during that period. Butone day a longtime SLF supporter asked, “When are you going to do your fun event again?” More ofthe same input arrived over the course of 2001, and so in March 2002, the SLF “Fancy Dessert”was born. Not an ornate dinner, just some tasty desserts. No national speakers, but plenty of goodlocal stories. Stories that come in the form of SLF’s “Leadership Awards,” which are presentedannually, and a trio of short-story videos that highlight the Gospel servanthood of churches in theirneighborhoods.

Everything we do at SLF is pretty low-key, hence the term “Fancy.” . . . . SLF’s mission is to engagePeople of Faith and People of Goodwill to collaboratively transform the City, neighborhood byneighborhood. SLF is a bridge-builder that brings together uncommon allies to deploy the “sacredart of servanthood” to kids, families, and neighborhoods, especially those most in need. . . . TheFancy Dessert merely highlights these collaborations and seeks to inspire.

Despite the resurrection of its own annual fundraiser in 2002, SLF still helps raise money forothers: more than $5 million by the most recent count.

Graduate Chapter activities for 2007 includedfour lunches with prominent local dignitariesas guest speakers, including Wes Crawford,KO ’06, recipient of the Wilkinson Award as theoutstanding Fiji nationally for 2006. Otherfunctions were a Fiji Portland Trailblazer night, which included a buffet dinner and a Blazergame at the Rose Garden. Four KO under-graduates were in attendance. We also held aGraduate Chapter beer bust at the GooseHollow Inn, which is owned by brother BudClark, former mayor of Portland.

We are also in the beginning stages ofbuilding a Graduate Directory for the purpose of improving our networking. If anyone knows ofany graduates not receiving the Graduate Chapter e-mail announcements, please contact AlLindstrom at [email protected].

We will not be having any formal luncheons during the summer, but rather will convene againin the fall. We hope that some KO undergraduates will be able to join us. Also, please visit ourWeb site: [email protected]. Pergé!
