Mogotji Seun, a Limpopo local, writes: If rumour is to be believed thenthe Limpopo Legislature is in foranother cabinet reshuffle. The departments in which Members of

the Executive Committee (MEC) wouldbe losing their portfolios appear to beTransport, (who would prefer to buildpedestrian walk-ways rather thanimproving on the actual road),Cooperative Governance,(who couldn’treally care about maladministration, mismanagement, corruption, and self-enrichment within local councils)Human Settlement, Traditional Affairs,Education (where schools have becomethe ‘sacrificial lambs at the altar’ nothaving the necessary equipment andmaterial to function optimally) andPublic Works (where EPWP programs/projects are rolled out with politicalagendas).Ironically these are all departments in

which the Bolshevik Party of SouthAfrica has, on several occasions, voicedtheir serious concern regarding a lack ofservice delivery in the province. It now

Limpopo Cabinet re-shuffle onthe cards should include theirPremier Stanley Mathabathafinally appears that the anomalies raised atvarious levels have finally had the result ofsomeone realizing and understanding thatthose matters that have been so diligentlyreported had all been factual. These MEC’s who are to be removed have

not been named and shamed butconsidering their inefficiency, incapacityand incapability since taking office, one canmake a fairly safe guess. But then these MEC’s are under the

leadership of the Premier who should bemonitoring their mandates, (that is, if he hastime as he seems to be spending all his timein the Library Bottle store in Groblersdal)so for that matter the reshuffling should notonly be limited to get rid of the MEC’s asthe Premier should be the first in line, forfailing to lead his MEC’s and failing todeliver within the Province. Any effectivereshuffle should by all means includegetting rid of him as leader first.COSATU is calling for these MEC’s to be

removed from the Provincial Legislature, but it should expand on its demand to alsoinclude the Executive Mayor ofSekhukhune, and even the Mayor of Elias

Motsoaledi, who is cut from the samecloth as the Premier of the Province andtheir protection in their positions shouldbe eradicated with immediate effect. If you want to sweep let the sweep be a

clean sweep and in the process get rid ofall the ‘dirt’ and ’rot’ that has infestedthe province as a whole, and not beselective in your demands. But then this is eight months before the

next local government elections so oneneed to wonder what impact such a re-shuffle can really have on theadministration, or is this but a merepolitical ploy to accommodate people inthe Legislature that would ensure that itssupport base is maintained? Are these tobe appointed new MEC’s not only tobuy face before the elections, as theircontribution taken the time left, wouldbe miniscule in really making anytangible difference, so theirappointments in all likelihood is morepolitical ‘survival mode’ than reallymaking a change to the disastroussituations in these departments at themoment.

The event was attendedby scores of journalists and editors formacross the country, who packed theconference hall for the exciting annualexperience.Thursday night kick-started with

motivational talks and a musicalperformance by 21-year old VernonBarnard. Barnard was diagnosed with aneye condition at a young age and hasundergone a total of 16 eye surgeries, all ofwhich were unsuccessful. He has beendeclared clinically blind, but that has notstopped him from achieving his goals. The message that Barnard conveyed to his

attentive audience was that anyone cansucceed regardless of the challenges theymay face in life. The event wrapped up on Friday with a

variety of speakers lined up to share theirexperiences with the audience and was alsograced by the mayor of Steve TshweteLocal Municipality, Mike Masina, who wasdelighted to be part of the seminar. For the second time in 21 years, the

seminar was graced by two internationalspeakers who shared important informationwith an audience. They are: assistantprofessor of journalism at the University ofMinnesota Duluth in the USA John Hatcherand associate professor at the E.W. ScrippsSchool of Journalism at the Ohio UniversityBill Reader.Former Pretoria News Chief Photographer

journalist in 1981 and is currentlyconsidered one of the country’s leadingcorporate event and celebrityphotographers. When asked why she thinks it is relevant

for her to send journalists every year toattend the seminar, CEO Bea Emslie saidthat it is a good opportunity for journaliststo meet and network with colleagues fromother publications and share experiencesbecause one might feel they are working inan island in the sea with the challenges orproblems that they experience in their lineof duty.“Meeting other journos one realises that

they get to experience the same challengesthat they do or go through the samesituations. It also helps to stay in touch withthe new trends in the media, in our caseprint; because in our days we used to owncameras with films and I learned of newcameras through the seminar. It is good thatthey bring new lecturers and prominentspeakers every year so that journalistscontinue learning new things. The BEAT’s team also expressed their

feelings about attending the event and howthey benefit from it.Bapela said that “it is almost 10 years now

since I joined The BEAT and I did encounterchallenges and great highlights in my job. Igot to write stories considered the best, which won me several awards at thenational, provincial and regional level, andlike other journalists, I also got to receivecomplements, criticism and even threats. Butwhat warms my heart the most is being ableto make a difference in an ordinary person’slife through my job. It is through suchexperiences and events like the seminar thatI remember how important my job is to meand the readers and I do not plan to give itup anytime soon; not for anything,” she said.Ringane said: “I have learned a lot from

attending this event. Meeting veterans whohave been in the industry for so long, hasrevived my passion and enthusiasm. The21st No Guts No Glory seminar was worthattending”.
