Bear’s Code keeps it classy It’s great to see so many parents and families supporting our teams at the start of a new season. As parents, we all get caught up in the excitement of seeing our kids play, and it’s great to see them win. Footy isn’t all about winning though, and it’s important that we set a good example for our kids, especially when it feels like match decisions aren’t going our way. We’d like to remind all parents that the Club Code of Behaviour is to be followed at all times, particularly when it comes to voicing concerns about match officials. Umpires, particularly junior umpires, need to be supported. If you have any serious concerns (such as player safety) remember that your concerns must ONLY be directed to your Team Manager, NEVER directly to the umpire or opponents. Thanks for helping keep the game fun, and the behaviour classy.

President’s Report Well, Round 2 is done and dusted and the Bears machine keeps rolling on with some impressive performances during the grading adjustment phase. It is important to remember that all clubs have changed during summer, and that weakens some teams and strengthens others; we have seen this ourselves with the ins and outs that have impacted out various line-‐ups.
What this means young Bears, is don’t get ahead of yourselves. As any senior AFL coach would tell you, footy should be taken one week at a time, and if you start believing in premiership glory in April you will forget what put you in that position in the first place. Keep working at it, keep listening and keep enjoying and the rest will follow.
The first family night for the year was a cracker, what better than a pie night for the footy and the very tasty Ivan’s Pies mixed well with our Bear families. The Under 10s and Under 11 Polars put on a great night, I didn’t think the raffle was going to end… and thanks to Romy and Gabi from the Kodiaks who helped set the room up. If you have never seen two Under 9 girls rolling out those big round tables from storage, I suggest you get down early for the next family night for a good chuckle.
Just a quick word on Justin Healey, the coach of the Under 11 Polars. Justin enjoyed the Polars big win over the Vampires from a hospital bed recovering from an illness, I am told he is fine and will be back on the track this week for training and lining up on Sunday with his team. The greater Bears community wishes you a speedy recovery.
Anzac Day was a great experience at The Bear Cave despite the weather. The Auskick crew did a fantastic job and the players showed all the respect of children much older during the ceremony phase. Thanks to Paul Mac for the sign writing on the ground, ‘Lest We Forget’, and Silvana and Prasheeta for a great morning of remembrance and footy.
Three Melbourne players also came down for the morning just to let Bully know they had beaten the Tigers the night before. Colin Garland, Jay Kennedy-‐Harris and Angus Brayshaw again showed to me that what makes a footy club successful is the quality of the individuals inside it, and teams like Melbourne and Bulldogs with a growing culture and self-‐belief are going to trouble many who were pencilling in wins.
In football, nothing can be taken for granted.
Work hard, listen and play with the right spirit and you will get the best out of your footy career.
On to Round 3.

Secretary’s Report What a wonderful weekend of footy, lots of wins, including one to my mighty Pies, a couple of very close losses and lots of tired families from organising the family night which was a spectacular success. The season is now starting to feel well underway, and hopefully it will be all smooth sailing from here on.
Can I urge you please to take the time to familiarise or re-‐familiarise yourself with some of the information on our brilliant new website

(thank you Clare Murphy and Katrina Anderson) dealing with our club policies, particularly the 2015 Information Booklet which is on the Forms & Apps page (http://www.caulfieldbears.com.au/juniorteam/our-‐club/forms-‐and-‐apps/ ).
VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION: Coaches’ Coordinator Last year, our coaches coordinator David Christiansen reinvigorated the coaching dept by putting together a coaches manual, and formalising more meetings and generally giving all of our coaches a terrific amount of information to work with. Gary Birrell who has the job this year has continued on with this great work, organising meetings, ensuring training times for all teams are fair and most importantly coercing the committee into spending large amounts of money to update our aging coach’s kits. This has been done, and I’m happy to say that the core “business” of the club (football) has benefited! Gary has also done massive amounts of work helping to get our 3 x U9 teams sorted out, and on top of all this has been coaxed into coaching the U11 Grizzly side. I’ve loved having Gary in our committee meetings this year, his dry sense of humour and WYSIWYG personality has helped us through many a stony issue. As with ALL of our wonderful volunteers, a huge thank you from the club Gary – we truly appreciate all your time and effort.
BEARS OF THE MONTH: Two lovely ladies who have been working tirelessly in the background this pre-‐season are Glenda Beecher (U9 Kodiak) and Bec Kovac (Registrar). Where would we be without our volunteers? We wouldn't is the answer! Glenda was going to manage the U11 Grizzly team this season, but stepped up when there was no-‐one else to help the U9 Kodiak team. She was going to do both at one point (glutton for punishment) until the U11 job was filled by someone else. As stated in last week’s newsletter, Bec has put every single player into the right place in Sporting Pulse, and sorted all our transfers etc. Well done ladies, enjoy your new celebrity status!
TIP OF THE WEEK: Relating to my excised rant above please be a supporter of your team, but leave the negative comments – whatever the provocation – unsaid. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER (you can’t have too many nevers) have cross words with an opposition player, official or supporter. There are procedures to follow if you want a complaint taken seriously, please follow them.
Good Luck to your team this weekend and GO BEARS!
Auskick Coordinator’s Update What a fantastic second session for our Auskickers! We started our ANZAC Auskick session with a special ANZAC presentation to honour the lives and sacrifices our fellow Australians made. Auskickers stood silent and still as possible listening to the Last Post, Rouse and beautifully sang our National Anthem. Well done! The Melbourne Football Club sent down three awesome AFL players Colin Garland, Jay Kennedy-‐Harris and Angus Brayshaw to spend our ANZAC Auskick Day with us. It was fantastic to see them so hands on, and to be directly involved with the kids throughout the whole Auskick session. They were each generous with their time and their instruction. They stayed longer for questions, autographs and photos. It was great to see all the kids, from Prep to Grade six enjoy this special Auskick Session. Thanks again to our Auskickers, Coaches and parents that get directly involved with the drills and training. Thanks for our BBQ helpers. We could not do it without all of you! Under 8 It was another rainy and cold morning at as the Under 8 team gathered at Koornang Park for their first home game of the season. After a warm up run and kick, the team gathered in the Club Rooms for a pre-‐match chat with our coach Mike, and then hit the ground full of anticipation and ready to play!
Q1 | The Bears came out firing with two quick goals by Jacques Land. This was followed by two amazing goals from Otis Karamihos. The Bears dominance in the forward line was well supported by Mack O’Keeffe, with great marking and accurate kicking to assist in setting up goals. Noah Will also featured in the forward line and came through with a point for the Bears from an amazing long kick. Jakob Sekker also had a huge first quarter, and scored a great goal for the Bears with a massive kick from near the middle.

Jacques went on to fire another three goals for the Bears, with a total of five for the quarter – well done Jacques!
Q2 | The Bears fired up again in the second quarter, with some amazing kicks and handballs. Tom Walsh featured in some great attacking play and scored an awesome goal. Oliver McCurdy also featured in the forward line with some great pick-‐ups and kicks during the quarter. Max Bremner had a great quarter in the forward line with a huge goal for the Bears. Patrick Rowlands and Charles Nelson had a great quarter with some strong attacking play. James Williamson and William Roberts also had an amazing quarter with some good kicks and handballs.
Q3 | Cheltenham scored their first point early in the quarter. This quarter saw some strong play from both teams, with the ball moving well to both ends of the field. The Bears continued to play well, with amazing efforts from Dom Nicolay, Oscar Liem and some great kicks from Bailey Cormick and Ben Fardell. Mack O’Keeffe and Noah Will continued to play outstanding footy with some awesome kicks and marks! Cheltenham scored their first goal late in the quarter.
Q4 |The final quarter of the game featured more great footy from the Bears. Joel Farrer and Jacques Land both took some amazing marks. Jakob Sekker scored an early goal and Charlie Boyles had a strong final quarter to score a point. Noah Will finished the game on a high by scoring his first goal for the Bears, and went on to score three goals for the quarter! The Bears were definitely the dominant team on the day, and tried their hardest for the entire match. It was a delight to watch.
Well done team and GO BEARS!
Under 9 Polars The Polars welcomed back Ashley, Finn, Jacob and Ryan into the team for their first home game of the season. The dark clouds looked ominous, the drizzle persisted and the crowd was keen to see the great teamwork and spirit the Polars are known for. Q1 | Lucas Bremner got the Polars moving with the first tap of the game but it soon became clear they were in for a tough game. The St Kilda City boys were hard at the ball kicking long into their forward line putting enormous pressure on our backline. Some great tackles and pressure from Matt and Ashley resulted in a well earned free kick to Ashley who used the ball well and found Jude further up the ground who had made great position to take a number of marks. Jude kicked long and soon Luke was able to take a great mark, moving the ball to Michael, then to Lucas Agar who kicked long to Lachy who kicked long from the boundary registering Polars’ first score the day – a point. The ball soon came back into the forward line with a long torpedo from Lucas B and despite great pressure from Jonno trying to keep the ball in the forward line the ball moved towards the opposition goal putting the Polars’ backline under great pressure for the rest of the quarter. Ash handballed to Finn who, combining with Lucas A, made one of many clearances for the term. Lucas took a strong contested mark, while James Thomas’ tackling, Liam’s pressure and some clever handballs from James Gearon and Michael kept the ball away from St Kilda City’s goals. Q2 |The second quarter started promisingly with Liam C clearing the ball from the centre. It wasn’t long, however, before the Polars’ backline was again under pressure. Michael was often first in for the ball with a lot of packs forming. Lucus B’s run and long kicks kept ball moving. Lachy was able to kick long again and score another point as goals were hard to come by. Jude kept kicking the ball back into the forward line creating opportunities for our forwards while James T continued his impressive attack on the ball and tackling earning a free kick. Finn’s kick into the forward line resulted in a great mark to Liam. The quarter finished with more pressure and tackling from Ged, Michael and James G in the backline restricting the opposition’s scoring opportunities. Q3 | Could the Polars mount a comeback in the third quarter and be rewarded for the great teamwork and commitment on display in the first half? Lucas Agar’s attack on the ball was impressive and he kicked long out of the centre. Jude was first to the ball and was paid a well-‐earned free kick. Jude’s long kick sailed towards the goals as the crowd watched in anticipation. The Polars scored their first goal and the boys lifted, sensing they were back in this game. The forward line work tirelessly to create more scoring opportunities with Ryan, Ash and Liam all contributing. Ryan and Matt worked hard in the midfield, both receiving free kicks for their efforts. Liam , Ged, Michael and Luke worked well together in the backline taking marks and tackling well. Q4 | The Polars continued to apply pressure and tackle in the last quarter working hard to try and create another scoring opportunity. Lucas led by example taking a mark and scoring another point. Lachy, Ged and Ash were getting plenty of the ball but the highlight of the quarter was the Wayne

Carey like mark from Jude bringing the crowd to their feet. The backline was holding up well again led by Jacob with some strong tackling. The commitment from the boys throughout the game was terrific and they should be proud of their efforts. Amongst the many courageous acts, clever ball use and great teamwork on display Michael, in only his second game for the Polars, set the bar high and should be proud of his efforts throughout the game.
Under 9 Kodiaks The Under 9 Kodiaks were again an amazing if undermanned/womanned unit on the weekend, taking on a taller unit from the Hampton Rovers down at the Boss James Reserve. With new coaches Chris Mathieson and Dale McCabe at the helm, the Kodiaks showed plenty or promise and will keep growing and enjoying their footy. Q1 | The game started well with the ball moving straight into our forward zone with a long driving clearance from Quinn who was already troubling the Rovers with his run and long kicking. Gabi got her first kick out on the win and the Kodiaks were fighting their way out of the congestion to find Ethan for a strong pack mark after banging heads with his opponent. Quinn, Tom Ritchie and Thomas Anderson (herein referred to as Tom and Thomas) combined for a quick chain of kicks that got the Kodiaks right into the scoring zone and Lachie Hudson has a shot from a tight angle, the ball rebounded by the Rovers only to find Quinn whose long bomb sailed through the middle for the Kodiaks first goal. Q2 | The message was clear at quarter time, watch your opponent because we were letting too many easy touches let the ball flow the other way. Marcus started the second half with as driving kick to Ethan who took another strong mark. On a Rover’s rebound, Quinn ended up the last Kodiak in defence and took a good gran on the goal line. Leo took a big mark and sent the Kodiaks into attack where Luca took off for a run only to kick into congestion again, where Romy and Jed were in and under again. Zade and Lachie H were now getting into it too, and they combined with a loan player from the Rovers to send it deep into attack where Johnny grabbed the ball and was running into goal when the siren sounded. Q3 | A quick shuffle of the line-‐up by the coaches and again the message of manning up came through loud and clear. Gabi took it to heart and stuck to her opponent like glue, hassling and harrowing the poor Rover like she was Luke Hodge, and like Hodge she won a Norm Smith Medal (perhaps we need a real name for this) for her defensive work. Perhaps the Kodiaks best play of the day followed, with a great link of play coming out of the back-‐line. Thomas kicked to Quinn who took mark number 10, Leo marked Quinn’s kick and he played on, passing to Lachlan M (now known as Matho to all) who got his kick away on the run while being dragged to the ground. Phoenix was next with the ball in his hands and he sent the Kodiaks deep into attack where a wall of unzoned Rovers rebounded. Not done, Luca had a long shot at goal out of a stoppage only to the find the same wall and rebound. Our Rover’s loan player was next to have a shot, and again the rebound… which left Quinn to have another crack. Same result, but now the Rovers had some of their forwards run down to get the ball out of the Kodiaks forward zone while the Kodiaks stopped at the zone changeover. Q4 | Gabi was applying pressure, Phoenix took a great pack mark and Quinn pulled down a screamer worthy of a new Toyota. Tom, Leo and Rocco then

combined to get the ball down to Zade, Jed and Thomas and again the shot on goal was rebounded. The coaching debut of Chris and Dale was starting to take shape, with the team splitting at the breaks for detailed conversations and the defensive messages were being sold to young ears. Stick to your opponents, and on the day that was only difference between the teams. Awards: Gabi and Lachlan
Under 9 Grizzlies Q1 | Playing their first game away from the Bear Cave, the Grizzlies seemed out of their comfort zone early against St Peters on the big ground at Centenary Park. The opposition were hard at the ball and it seemed our players were still musing about their cornflakes in the early stages of the first quarter. The ball spent most of the time in the St Peters forward line, and it was only through dogged defence that we were able to limit their scoring. Jake in particular was a Rock of Gibralter in the first quarter, repelling many an attack, and Jack Joyce and Caiden showed good endeavour with their tackling. We were however unable to send the ball past our half back line, and St Peters peppered the goals at will. Strong, desperate pressure on the last line of defence kept many certain goals to behinds, but it was clear the floodgates could open if we didn't turn things around. Q2 | The second quarter opened with the Grizzlies showing more vigour and run, with Ollie Calder showing good dash down the wing. We couldn't however penetrate our forward line, players often going for an extra bounce or short handball when a long kick would have served better. Improved decision making will come over time as the team grows in experience. Q3 | Coach Michael was clear at half time: we had to attack the ball harder and be first at it. It was obvious the shell-‐shocked team had taken in his words, as the contest became much more willing in the third quarter. It was evident that the Grizzlies' work rate had lifted early, with Tom Perry clearing the ball out of the centre, and a great linking handball from Seb to Jake finally sending us into our forward line. Strong efforts in tackling and smothering were rewarded, with Lachie Mackie and Felix showing good pluck, and Oliver Jackson working hard. Jack Joyce took a nasty blow to the head and had to sit the rest of the game out; it was a blow to the team as he had been one of our stronger players. The third quarter came to end without us scoring, but it was impressive to see the turnaround in endeavour. Q4 | The improved effort continued in the fourth quarter as Jack Kennedy laid a fantastic tackle in the back line. Tom Graham and Lenny were busy, and Jake was a handball machine in our forward line. Still, we couldn't quite get the pigskin within shooting distance of the big sticks, where Hudson was looking to emulate his legendary Hawthorn namesake, and the siren eventually sounded to end proceedings. Overall, the match was a good lesson in how being first to the ball wins games. St Peters were a strong team but we matched them fairly evenly in the second half when we lifted our work rate and the fighting Grizzly spirit came to the fore. It was encouraging to see the improvement in the team's performance after a slow start, and if they take this attitude into their next game from the first bounce, watch out the Black Tails!

Under 10 You would be forgiven for thinking it was the middle of June this past weekend with the cold, wet & miserable conditions for footy but that wasn’t going to dampen the spirits of our boys on this special ANZAC weekend.
Q1 | The Bears showed great spirit and determination this week but in the drizzle the Bentleigh boys started strong and were able to score in the first few minutes of the game. Bentleigh dominated in the centre and were able to get the ball down to their forward line with somewhat ease, until Nivvy put a stop to that by marking the ball and avoiding a second goal to the opposition. The boys in the backline had their work cut out for them right from the ‘get go’ but that didn’t stop Clance, Teddy and H-‐bomb aka Avo and their strong defence. Teddy was able to spoil a goal attempt resulting in a minor score for the opposition. Big Hazza stormed through the centre of the ground with a massive punch and then a tackle to almost single handedly get the ball down to Wizza who lined up after the siren but wasn’t able to convert.
Q2 |Bentleigh were strong in the 2nd quarter again but JJ was fearless with some great tackling, Big Fish strong in the backline and Ram who was able to take the ball to ground and force the turnover. Again Clance and Teddy were strong in the backline but Bentleigh dominated the quarter.
Q3 | At half time, Coach Adrian suggested that it was a “bit tough” down in the back half but he lifted the boys with his inspirational address which showed right from the 3 quarter bounce. There was great offensive play by Lucky, Wolfie and Banger. Rhino cleared it from another bounce and got it down to our forward pocket but we could only score one behind for the quarter while the opposition scored another 2 goals for the term.
Q4 | We came out fighting in the fourth quarter despite being more than 6 goals down. Haydos was strong in the middle, Teddy and Hazza again showed off their superb skills and Lucky delivered the ball straight into the arms of Bucket who was able to send that ball through for our only goal of the day. The game finished with what was a fairly convincing win to Bentleigh but Coach Adrian summed it up saying he was “really impressed” with the boys efforts.
Everyone contributed in some way, which was really pleasing, and the boys showed great mateship and courage in the true ANZAC spirit.

Under 11 Grizzlies Q1 | The bears travelled down to The Oakleigh Dragons ground on a very cold and wet day. Captain Jesse Rawack lost the toss and the Dragons kicked to the city end. Midfielders King, Margaritis, Cooper and Cauchi got off to a nice start with the first center clearance, only for Oakleigh to push straight into their forward line to score the first two points of the game.
The Caulfield defence of Soroczynski and Foldavari were holding on strong against the Oakleigh surge and it took Griffin Beveridge to dash down the wing and pass to Rawack for Caulfield's first goal. The game continued with

Cauchi intercepting the ball on the wing to pass to Beazley who marked and delivered a behind. Apart from some solid work on the boundary line by Byron Clarke, the Dragons dominated the rest of the quarter with a goal and a point.
Caulfield 1.1.7 Oakleigh 1.4.10
Q2 | The second quarter started fairly even with the ball moving freely across the ground. The dragons started to apply some pressure to the strong defence of Birrell, Spilkin and Margaritis only to score a minor. The long kickouts of Mavropolous helped the bears get out of the danger zone but to no avail as the Dragons kicked a nice goal. Byron Clarke rucked most of the day and did some heavy work on the boundary line where he opened up the play for O’Donnell to dash down the wing and send the ball forward for Johnston to see the ball roll over for a behind. The Dragons quickly ran the ball forward only for Rawack and Fiorenza to combine on the half back flank to put an end to the forward surge.
Caulfield 1.2.8 Oakleigh 2.5.17
Q3 | The bears started strongly in the 3rd quarter. Jack King and Benjamin King continually repelling the ball out of the back line and into the forward line for the likes of O’Meara and Ben King to do some nice small forward work and getting a behind for the Bears. The heavy body work started to increase as the game went on, Chen snapping out of the pack to Beveridge who received a high tackle and a free kick to go with it. Only due to some strong groundwork by Gerrand were the Bears able to stay in touch of the Dragons.
Caulfield 2.3.15 Oakleigh 2.7.19
Q4 | The last quarter had all the markings of a beauty if the Bears could get away to a strong start and they did with Cooper propelling the ball into the forward line for a Caulfield point. But the Dragons came back and went deep into the forward line where Edison McLeod Smith was waiting with open arms to push the ball back out. The ball went back and forward with some heavy tackling and long kicking and finally Caulfield were able to score another behind and looked like an upset was in place. However the fitter legs and home ground advantage saw the Dragons kick the last 4 of the game to run out comfortable winners.

Under 11 Polars With coach Justin out of action for the game, our Auskick coach Mark Callaghan stepped into the role. This was a home game and East Brighton Vampires looked very ready to play. Q1 | Bears took charge early in the first quarter with Kobi booting the first goal within 3 minutes after the bounce. Nathan's mark again allowed the Bears to push forward again deep into Vampire territory. But Vampires were not to be taken lightly. They replied, getting the ball out of their half. Haddi combined with Hayden to stop the Vampires' push and Hayden managed to boot the ball forwards again, accurately finding Nathan who took another great mark. Noah and Seamus made sure the ball found its way into the hot spot, with Thomas taking the mark, lining up and putting the ball through for the Bears' second goal. Tackling and shepherding training was paying off well -‐ Kobi, Hayden, Jack and Bailey making it very difficult for the Vampires to get past the half way line.
Bears 2.5.17 Vampires 0.0.0 Q2 | Quarter 2 belonged to the Vampires. They took early possession of the ball and hand numbers on all parts of the field and flying past both Raj and Darcy to create early chances. Nathan managed to get the ball back out for the Bears to Darcy who took a clean mark to put a temporary stop to the Vampires attack. Lucas and Haddi in defence were doing all possible to hold them back. Henry and Darcy were again getting great tackles, but Vampires always seemed to have the numbers. Vampires' persistence paid off in the second quarter, giving them two goals in the second quarter.
Bears 2.7.19 Vampires 2.1.13 Q3 | Quarter 3 was fought hard by both teams. No goals were scored by either team. Efforts by Haddi, Angus and Andrew got the ball out of the Bears half. Bears kept better possession of the the ball and managed to get two behinds in the quarter.
Bears 2.9.21 Vampires 2.1.13 Q4 | Great defence was needed. The coach called on James and Haddi in full back to keep the Vampires at bay. They responded, getting the ball to Darcy who then found Hayden. Angus and Andrew continued the push, getting the ball within striking range. Vampires took possession of the ball, but were not able to get it past Seamus, who marked and sent the ball forward again for a mark by Luca. Jack kicked cleanly to Hayden who then went long down the line to Tom and Noah. Vampires kick out was intercepted by Andrew who spotted Darcy. Darcy boots the third for the Bears. The Bears then took charge. Seamus put another goal through and Thomas added another two. A great win for the U11 Polars.

Under 12 After a comprehensive defeat in round one our boys were looking to respond and put in a stronger display in round two. Coach Beet had implored the boys to work together as a team but more importantly apply team pressure. He asked for a bigger contribution and effort in the tackling department and the defensive areas of the game.
The coaches instructions worked a treat and our boys came out and played four quarters of spirited football from the first bounce. The midfield were able to get on top early with Sebastian and Angus getting first hands on the football in the ruck allowing Sam and George to continually drive us forward. When the opposition did venture forward our back six held firm and continuously rebounded well. Archie, Harry and Cormack were not allowing any balls to get behind them and were mopping up brilliantly.
With a solid platform being set by our midfielders and back six the forwards eventually wore their opponents down and were able to start hitting the scoreboard. Nicola gave us a target across half forward and big Nick was his usual bustling self. Nick’s ability to break the packs open and create the loose ball meant the smaller forwards started to get some opportunities.
Our first goal was a ripper, young Cormack who was in everything all day swooped on a loose ball to score a fine goal on the run to ensure that we headed into the break with an advantage. After quarter time the scoring opportunities were more plentiful with big Nick breaking through to open his account followed by a cracking running goal by Harry Beet.
Angus Edgar got on the scorer’s sheet with a fine snap from distance and the game appeared to be ours. Further goals ensued from big Nick for his 2nd, Orion and George completed the rout late in the last quarter.
Michael M, Ryan and Andy created a lot of pressure around the ground and supported their team mates with some great blocks throughout the day. Overall it was a fantastic team effort with contributions from all 19 players who were available on the day. Hopefully we can continue to show this sort of form throughout the season and keep on improving.

Under 13 Our ANZAC weekend began with those who could make it attending the dawn service at the Caulfield RSL very early Saturday morning. Many of the team who couldn’t make it were already attending similar events with school or family so they were all pumped full of the ANZAC spirit for the following morning. Luckily, our newest recruit Dylan, was able to “stand by a mate” and managed to pick up a stranded Finn O who was wondering where the rest of the team was when he was left at Walter Galt Reserve instead of Parkdale SC.
Charlie G also showed great spirit, turning up to support the team, and work the magnetic board although he was feeling too unwell to play. Bully then filled the boys with a passionate speech, and they observed Last Post and a minutes silence in the rooms prior to charging out to take on the Mustangs.
From the first bounce we showed great spirit and mateship, our focus was on courage and putting heads over the ball and everyone contributed in some way which was most pleasing. Flynn was awesome in the ruck with great support from “The King “ -‐ Joel never complains, just does his job and this week he showed the Mustangs what real class and courage is about. Beau not only played a ripping game but showed awesome leadership in standing up to an aggressor who had taken on his mate – the Bears were ferocious but fair.
Matty and Kai were wreaking havoc in the forward line and with big Dylan chipping in with a couple of goals we now have a forward line with plenty of options. Nick and Jaffa continue to improve every week, their determination belies their size and lifts their teammates. Gordo and Lurch were inspiring with their hardness and tackling, little Lurch at one point in a David and Goliath situation actually felling Goliath! That’s what we are looking for from everyone.
Henry was showing his flexibility and played one of his best ever quarters of footy in the first quarter at centre half-‐back , attacking one moment, then saving a goal on the line the next, a fine Captains game. Finn O, Billy and Max were solid contributors all day, bringing other teammates into the game and beating their opponents. Fraze came back after a heavy knock at training to play another fearless game, as did Josh.
Finn H is another Bear who has improved, he hasn’t missed a training session and loves to get out there with his teammates. The Lukes, LT and Mazz gave us great run and carry, breaking the lines and taking on the opposition, keep it up lads. Vas was again solid and showed he can play on any line, he’s another who hardly misses training showing the benefit of regular attendance, keep going Vas. The pocket sized engine that is Paolo, basically missed the first quarter as the ball did not go down into the back pocket, so the coach took him off and primed him for a different role. When he took the field next quarter he showed his class and absolutely dominated on the ball.
Only 2 awards being given out each week at the moment, but the votes for this week would have been spread wide over the team, and virtually every player could have got them. A true TEAM performance this week. Well done guys.

Under 14 Greetings, my fellow Bearisians and hail to those who braved the cool morning spritzer of rain to enjoy some champagne football on Sunday morning against Cheltenham. Two things that should be clarified: I forgot I was doing the report so brought nothing to makes notes on; it was such a big win I’m going to deftly avoid the fact that I was completely disorganised by just calling out some game highlights.
Before the game: It was very subdued in the change room and there was a bit of doubt flying around as to whether the boys were fired up enough. Further investigative reporting revealed that the boys were in shock that Macca had referred to a Non-‐Hawthorn coach in his pre-‐game speech!
The Opposition: Highett/Cheltenham had a tough day at the office, no doubt about that. However, they impressed by not dropping their heads and fighting out the game to the very end. They may not have won the game but they certainly won our respect. It was also encouraging to see our lads keep to their code of ‘Humble in victory, gracious in defeat’.
Harry’s 50th: Shattering the myth that the 50th game can be a dud, Harry burst out of the blocks like Usain Bolt shot out of a cannon with a rocket pack on and put in a cracking game. In the first quarter he had the ball on the string and was close to being told by his mum to be nice and share the footy with the other boys. Then he goes and tops it off with a goal! If he’d also won the girl at the end of the game, we could have sold this story to Hollywood. Well done Harry.
Best on ground: The team. Your brave correspondent didn't envy the Coaches difficult job of picking players for the awards (but ‘unbiasedly’ agreed). The consistency across the team was the best I’d even seen and, to the oppositions’ dismay, when one Bears player fell by the wayside, another one would stand up. There was more pressure on the opposition than the time I remembered I had to buy presents ten minutes before the shops closed the day before Mother’s Day.
One percenters: This, in this uneducated writer’s mind, is what actually made a big difference to the game. The effort that was put into second and third tackles, the chasing down of players and tapping the ball back in from the boundary line was brain snapping in its intensity and was reflected in the number of goals that followed these plays. If you spend every second of the quarter giving that extra percent multiplied by the number of players on the field and then divide by the number you first thought of, what do you get? BEARS FOOTY!

Under 17 In a very big day for milestones, we celebrated Oliver and Tom C (100 games) & Liam (50 games). After a successful opening round we came up against St Bedes/Mentone who we played last year with mixed results. Q1 | We won the toss and kicking with the wind we opened well with Tom C wining in the ruck and Oliver in everything around the packs. The team looked up for the challenge & when Mitch won the ball across halfback & kicked Nick L half forward. From the stoppage the ball kicked forward where Liam took a strong mark & kicked the 1st goal of the match. With the aid of the wind the team was well on top but when the ball did venture into the defence Hamish, Josh & Tom W were well on top to move the ball forward & out of danger. Nick L was in everything early on & after receiving a handball from Gavin at half forward slotted our 2nd goal. Then the roles reversed & Nick L kicked long & Gavin over the back of the pack took a well-‐judged mark & kicked the 3rd goal. By this time it was all the Bears and with great team play between Nick O, Olme & James saw James kick another goal. Luca found Nick O on a difficult angle but his long kick went straight through the middle just as the siren sounded.
Score: Bears 5.0.30 St Bedes 0.0.0 Q2 |Kicking against the wind a big effort was required to maintain the advantage that had been set up in the 1st quarter. The midfield was on top & we were consistently winning the ball out of the centre giving the forwards plenty of oportunities. Jacson won the ball & passsed to Olme & even against the wind kicked a long goal. It seemed that everyone was contributing at this stage of the game and great team play resulted in James posting another goal for the Bears. As the quarter moved forward St Bedes managed to get a bit of a run on & managed to get a couple of late goals. The back line had done an outstanding job in this quarter with Hamish in everything, ably supported by the rest of the defenders in playing his best game for the club.
Score: Bears 7.5.47 St Bedes 2.6.18 Q3 | As soon as the quarter started you could just tell this was going to be a different half of footy compared to the first. St Bedes started winning the ball out of the midfield & putting our defence under a lot more pressure. St Bedes started to register some goals despite the strong work by Hamish, Josh, Ben & Tom W. We needed a lift from the midfield & wwhen Nick O kicked long to the square with Luca roving the pack kicked a steadying

goal. Olme then passed in typical fashion to Liam whio kicked another goal the pressure was slightly reduced. St Bedes were not going away easily and the pressure was going to be on with them coming home with the wind.
Score: Bears 9.7. 61 St Bedes 5.8.38 Q4 | The Bears needing to lift & when Nick L gathered the ball at half forward to snap a great goal on his left foot it appeared the bears were going to come home strong. Both teams were giving everthing and it seemed we slightly had the better runners at this stage. Liam won the contest at half forward & with his kick missing Gavin who managed to run onto the ball & handpass to Luca for another goal. Liam in his 50 game had been a great focus at full forward and when he took another strong mark which resulted in a goal the game appeared to be over. To St Bedes credit they never gave up kicking two late goals but in the end we ran out winners by 22 points.
