Hello all!
Summer is coming very quickly and
will be here before you know it.
There will be plenty to look forward
to in the month of June. The Nation-
al Senior Olympic Games are com-
ing to Albuquerque for the first time
from June 14 – June 25. There will
be 20 different events all across the
city at 16 different venues, with
anticipated record attendance for athlete participation as
well as spectators from all across the country. The City of
Albuquerque and the Department of Senior Affairs are
encouraging all those interested to either spectate or
volunteer !
To kick off summer, we will be having a “Food-Truck
Day” on Friday June 7 featuring “Punchy’s Pizza” along
with a car show!
Let us not forget to give gratitude to those fatherly figures
in our lives by celebrating Father’s Day on Sunday the
16.th. The official start of summer begins with the Summer
Solstice on the 21st.
Again, Bear Canyon staff and volunteers would like to
thank all members and participants for the continued sup-
port and transition of scanning/swiping cards for attend-
ance purposes. This process has helped our department
and center show our great participation through more
accurate attendance numbers with close to 4,000 visits in
the month of April alone. As we continue to move closer
and closer to solidifying the overall process, we anticipate
seeing our participation numbers increase and going pa-
perless in the upcoming months. We appreciate all of the
cooperation!

National Senior Games
Dennis Diaz Hometown: Las Cruces Age: 61 National Senior Games: Shot Put, Discus, Hammer Throw The nickname of Pastor Dennis Diaz’ at the Mesilla Park Community Church in Las Cruces is “Big D.” (The church is soon to be renamed Real Life Church.) The reason is pretty obvious when you see him. He is a big man. Alongside his 39-year ministry in the church, Diaz has also been a life-long athlete. Since high school he has specialized in track and field events, in-cluding discus, shot put and javelin, and in weight lifting. He qualified for the 2019 National Senior Games shot put, discus and ham-mer throw, despite having what he considered several off-years for train-ing. In 2016, his wife TJ died after an 11-year battle with cancer. And last July, he remarried. “This past year has been devoted to my wife Teresa. Some things are more important than training for a track competition,” he explained in an email. As a college student at New Mexico State University, Diaz was a stellar track and field athlete. In 1994, he was elected to the NMSU Sports Hall of Fame and continues to hold school records in the shot put and discus. Dur-ing his 26 years as senior pastor at the 2,000-member congregation in Las
Cruces, he also made time to serve as a track and field coach on the staff of UC Irvine, Baylor University and New Mexico State University. Diaz keeps in shape by working out six days doing cardio, and stretching and three day a week in the gym concentrating on heavy weight lifting. He enjoys competing in Master's and Senior track and field competi-tions, playing golf, basketball, hiking and watching sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys. (He attended seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.) “My greatest, most enjoyable hobby is hanging out with my wife Teresa,” said Diaz. For Diaz, the key to success as a senior athlete is to train smarter, not harder. After turning 50, Diaz said he tried to train like he was still in his 20s. He was working harder but his performance wasn’t improving. Fel-low senior athletes cautioned not to over-train, which was exactly what he was doing. “I have to figure out what works in every season of my life,” said Diaz. Sometimes, he said “it pays to back off.”

Wendell Osborn Home Town: Clovis Age: 81 National Senior Games: Shot Put, Discus, High Jump, Triple Jump, Standing Long Jump, Hammer Throw Last year, the Board of Directors for the Clovis 50+ Senior Olympians nominated Wendell Osborn for Golden Male Athlete of the Year for his dedication to seniors and senior sports. In his 25 years of participating in Senior Olympics in Clovis, he has won more than 400 medals in dozens of different sports and recreational activities. The retired farmer, who has lived in Clovis since 1959, has a chest full of medals but has never been heard to brag about any of them. In his Clovis gym, he is famous for racking up points in back-to-back free throws in basketball. “Well, I’m still on the top side of the dirt, so I guess I’m doing great,” folksy Osborn remarked recently. Last summer in the New Mexico Senior Olympics, the taciturn native New Mexican qualified for the National Senior Olympics in several field events, including shot put, discus and long jump. “He’s amazing. He’s the one of the oldest in his age group and he’s still winning,” said Jan, Os-born’s wife of 46 years and his greatest fan. The Osborns married when he was 35 and she was 22. Jan is a retired educator at Clovis Municipal Schools. The couple have two adult children and four grandchildren. Like many senior athletes, Osborn is a life-long athlete. He started playing basketball in high school. As he grew older, he simply remained active, and stayed fit and kept in shape through physical hard work. Now that he is retired from farming, Osborn hits the gym every day concen-trating on lifting weights and toning his legs and core. He is always the first to encourage newer athletes and to offer his help with volunteering and coaching senior sports. In addition to Osborn’s talents in sports, he is an accomplished musician, singer and song writer, who has recorded a Christian CD with his wife. She sings and plays the piano. He is an active member of his Baptist church and belongs to the Fraternal Order of Eagles, a 120-year-old interna-tional fraternal organization. In nominating Osborn for the Golden Male Athlete, the Clovis50+ board noted that he is a “big man with a kind and gentle heart. … We are proud to nominate Wendell Osborn.”

A Babylonian youth named Elmesu carved the first known Fa-ther’s Day card in clay nearly 4,000 years ago. His special message wished his father good health and a long life. William Jackson Smart of Spokane, Wash., a man ahead of his time, is the inspiration for modern-day Father’s Day. Smart was a widower and Civil War veteran who was both father and mother to his six children for 21 years after the death of his wife. Smart’s daughter, Sonora Louise (Mrs. John Bruce Dodd), got the idea for Father’s Day in 1909 while lis-tening to a Mother’s Day sermon at church. She en-couraged local churches to institute a Father’s Day observance the following year (1910) on one Sunday in June, the month of her father’s birth. Through her efforts, interest in the celebration of Father’s Day grew and spread to other cities and states.

Lillian Jaramillo Age: 72 Hometown: Pueblo of Isleta National Senior Games: Did Not Qualify Chalk up Lillian Jaramillo’s disappointing perfor-mance at last summer’s New Mexico Senior Olym-pics State Summer Games to “the agony of defeat.” A six-time Gold Medal winner in Shuffleboard and Doubles Shuffleboard, Lillian Jaramillo said some-thing just didn’t click for her in the last year’s New Mexico Senior Olympics State Summer Games. She didn’t qualify for the 2019 National Senior Games in
Albuquerque. “I don’t know what happened. I just didn’t have it that day,” Jaramillo said of the sport she has played consistently for six years since retiring from teaching special education. However, her long-time domestic partner and shuffleboard partner, Jose Martinez, did qualify in the men’s shuffleboard competition in his age group, so he will be able to play in the National Senior Games. “It’s Jose’s turn to shine,” said Lillian. “I’ll be there in the cheering section.”
