Very soon we will be seeking nominations for a portion of the positions on the Board of Directors, to include Chapter President, so start thinking about how you could serve your chapter. Our next event will be a group meeting on Saturday, 29 September at the first ever APG Oktoberfest at Shine Sports Field, located next to the commissary. We’ve invited the non-chapter MOAA members in Harford and Cecil counties to come join us as well, so they can meet fellow MOAA members. So, please plan to come out and help us recruit members for the chapter, in addition to reconnecting with your fellow chapter members. Enjoy German food and beverages, family fun activities and games, a Festhalle with live entertainment, fireworks, and much more. Admission is FREE for this family- friendly celebration of a 200-year old Bavarian tradition. The evening promises to be “HOOAH with OOMPAH!” For further information, contact Brian Lantz at 410-939-0648, or send an email to [email protected] so we can save you a spot. A Message from the Chapter President Lt Col Jeffrey A. Brock, USAF Ret.

Dear Fellow Susquehanna Chapter members,

It is hard to believe that Fall is already upon us. It

seems like the summer just started. However, the

chapter has been quite busy over the summer months.

Very soon we will be seeking nominations for a portion

of the positions on the Board of Directors, to include

Chapter President, so start thinking about how you

could serve your chapter.

Our next event will be a group meeting on Saturday,

29 September at the first ever APG Oktoberfest at Shine

Sports Field, located next to the commissary. Come

over to the MOAA section of the festival tent between 4

pm and 10 pm and celebrate with your chapter. We’ve

invited the non-chapter MOAA members in Harford and

Cecil counties to come join us as well, so they can meet

fellow MOAA members. So, please plan to come out and

help us recruit members for the chapter, in addition to

reconnecting with your fellow chapter members. Enjoy

German food and beverages, family fun activities and

games, a Festhalle with live entertainment, fireworks,

and much more. Admission is FREE for this family-

friendly celebration of a 200-year old Bavarian

tradition. The evening promises to be “HOOAH with

OOMPAH!” For further information, contact Brian Lantz

at 410-939-0648, or send an email to

[email protected] so we can save you a spot.

For detailed information and updates about the

On May 4th, several Susquehanna Chapter members joined the Johns Hopkins University

Blue Jay Army ROTC unit for their Dining Out aboard the Spirit of Baltimore cruise ship.

The cruise departed from the Inner Harbor, cruised up to the Key Bridge and back, offering

spectacular views of Ft McHenry and the waterfront. The night provided an opportunity to

meet the cadets and discuss military service life with them. Most had no prior military

interaction other than their cadet life, so the cruise provided a unique opportunity to share

some “war stories” about “real” military life from those of us that have “been there, done

that.” Members attending the event were: Maggie Talbot-Bedard and Paul Bedard, Brian

Lantz, Ted and Colleen Newing, and Jeff Brock.

Have you ever wondered if your family is prepared to handle your personal affairs during an emergency or

after your death? Do you think your loved ones will be able to keep your affairs in order to make an effective

transition? MOAA has a few documents that will assist loved ones during this stressful time.

There are two guides on the MOAA website that will assist you in preparing yourself and your family

during this time in everybody’s life. These guides provide a comprehensive list and interactive spreadsheets to

identify your accounts, financial holdings, will, life insurance and other personal information that will be

needed upon an emergency or a member’s death.

The guides can be found by clicking on the pictures underneath the guide titles below or by typing “Personal

Affairs” in the MOAA web site (www.moaa.org) search box (in the upper right-hand corner of the page).

On Sunday afternoon, June 24th, the

Chapter enjoyed a superb picnic at Jim and

Betsy Wasson’s home. There was no shortage

of food, drink, and fellowship. In addition, we

celebrated Bill Cyr’s birthday in style,

complete with a flaming cake. Thank you

again to Jim and Betsy for your hospitality

and willingness to open your home to the

Chapter, and to Brian and Tina Lantz for

orchestrating the food and drinks.

On Tuesday evening, August 28th, the Chapter met at

Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen to enjoy the Ironbirds

Military Appreciation Night baseball game. The APG

leaders and color guard were only part of the

celebration, as several local military and veterans

organizations, as well as businesses that support the

military set up display tables, giving away shirts, and

other items. Because only a limited number of folks

enjoyed the evening, the chapter did end up paying for

the unsold tickets. Those of us that attended enjoyed the

great evening and weather, despite the Ironbirds loss to

Brooklyn.

A reminder: The Military Officer Association of America Annual Meeting

will be held 29-30 October at the Sheraton National Hotel in

Arlington, VA. There is no cost for the meeting, but you do need

to register via the website: www.moaa.org.

On September 11th, the Maryland Council of Chapters Legislative Appreciation Luncheon was held at the

Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, DC. Chapter members who made the trek to DC to represent

you were: Nick Borns, Ty Stark, Brian Lantz, Howard and Connie Beardsley, and Jeff and Annie Brock. This

was the second luncheon the Maryland Council has hosted, and the room was filled to the brim with fellow

Maryland MOAA Chapter members, as well as MOAA National members to include VADM Norb Ryan,

President.

The forum of the luncheon is a two hour block of time where Maryland’s Senators and Representatives stop

by and speak for 10-15 minutes, then they are able to join the table with their district members, represented by

the various Maryland MOAA Chapters. Our chapter, was selected to host Representative Dutch Ruppersberger

(District 2). Unfortunately, with the death of Art Modell (former Raven’s owner), Rep. Ruppersberger attended

Mr. Modell’s funeral in Baltimore, subsequently arriving to speak during the final 15 minutes of the luncheon;

he was, therefore, unable to spend time meeting with our members. Other representatives who spoke include:

Sen Ben Cardin, Rep Andy Harris, Rep John Sarbanes, Rep Roscoe Bartlett, and Rep Chris Van Hollen.

Thank you to everyone that made a donation to our

Stay-At-Home Tea conducted from mid-July to mid-

September. Your donations enabled the chapter to

present a check to the Perry Point VA Center for

$1565 on Wednesday, 19 September. Our stay at

home tea drive was targeted to supporting the VA

Maryland Health Care System’s need to raise $8,000

to purchase a patriotic gift for each of the 700

hospitalized Veterans this Veterans’ Day, November

11th. A big THANK YOU goes to Roy Valiant for his

efforts to lead this fund raising drive. Without his

leadership and time assembling the envelopes, and

materials, this would not have been possible. Thank you

again to all who donated - as our fellow Veterans will

benefit from your generosity!! If you are interested in

assisting the VA hand out the gifts on November 10th

or 11th, please let me know. The patriotic gift our

donations will assist in purchasing for each Veteran is a

Service specific bear that plays the Service’s song. Roy

and I were quite surprised to find out how much these

bears are appreciated by the Veteran patients. Brandi

Sima and Susan Kern both raved about how the patients

smile and care for their bear.
