Saturday night CASA hosted its annual Dancing withthe Stars fundraiser at the Camp Perry Conference center.Six local celebrities and six veteran dancers took the stageto raise money for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advo-cates), which gives a voice to abused, neglected or depen-dent children. At the beginning of the event, a video fromchildhelp.org was shown to remind the audience why theywere there. We must remember this is for the children, said Connie Cornett, the Executive Director of CASA andorganizer of the event.

After the video, hosts Judge Kathleen Giesler of OttawaCounty Juvenile Court and Genoa Police Chief Bob Brat-

ton spared no time bringingthe comedy. The judges forthe evening were DebbieHymore-Tester (portrayingCarry Anne), Tracy Gaines(portraying Max) and KimDusseau (portraying Cher)who were all former CASADancing with the Starsdancers.

The dancers were RoseannHickman and Craig Olsze-wski, Pat Adkins and Annes-sia Nyman, Carlos Mincheffand Lisa Ramsey, AngelaRahm and Hank Fox, AnnDuez and Timothy Nymanand Rich Riedmaier andMary Ann Snider. Therewas also a live auction byGreg Peiffer and a specialperformance by One LoveDancers.

The couple that raisedthe most money was Pat Adkins and Annessia Nyman, who raised $6766 for CASA. In second place were AnnDuez and Timothy Nyman, who raised a total of $6173.The Judges Choice Award for best dancing went to An-gela Rahm and Hank Fox. Overall, the evening brought in$18,169.80 for CASA. Over a hundred more tickets weresold this year over last which brought in record numbersin attendance and profits.

    CASAs Dancing with

the Stars a big hit BY DONNA LUEKEIn 1993, Nancy Barna opened one of the first masso-therapy practices in the area at a small office on Madi-son Street. This month she celebrates her 20th year ofbusiness in Port Clinton.

I want to express my gratitudeto my family, friends and clientswho have supported me through-out, such as Bruce Winters, DocWaite (the late Dr. John Waite),Mike Bassett and Julie Dunham.Barnas family includes husbandGino; son Bart, 31; daughter Mel-anie, 22; daughter Madison, 15;and grandchildren Annabelle andBrick.

The Kenny HouseIn 1997, Barna moved her office to a turn of the cen-

tury house on Adams Street. From the beginning, TheKenny House has had a spirit of giving thanks incor-porated into the place. The Kenny House was namedin memory of Barnas beloved father, Kenny Oglesbee.Barna purchased and remodeled the house, investingmoney that passed on to her when her dad passed on.I wanted to expand the services, and find a way to stayconnected to and thank my Dad. He was always a greathost and loved people. I wanted to carry on that tradi-tion.

Recently Keith Fleming of Keith Fleming Gallery on2nd Street in Port Clinton assisted Barna remodel thereception area, blending several of her items with someof Flemings antiques and displays of merchandise thatthe Kenny House offers, maintaining its style that canbe described as recycled and eclectic, yet functionaland warm.

There are three licensed massotherapists that work atthe Kenny House: Barna; Barbie Bloom, who special-izes in orthopedic massage; and intern Kimberly Wil-liamson. They offer traditional massotherapy, reflexol-ogy, Thai massage, whirlpool, basalt stone massage, andpregnancy massage. There are clients that have beenwith Barna from the beginning of her practice.Thereare those who come here once a year, and those whocome twice a week. The business has developed morethan I ever anticipated.

Barna at times refers clients to other massotherapistsat The Kenny House and in the area. If I am not of-fering what a client needs, it is to their benefit to go

to another therapist. It is a much better fit to have anopen door, for clients to come and go when it is rightfor them.

As to her own specialties, in 1991 Barna graduatedfrom The Ohio College of Limited Medical Practice inCleveland, which was one of only 7 schools of mas-sotherapy at that time in the state of Ohio. Since thenshe has continued to study, taking approximately 50classes over the past 20 years because of my passionfor learning more about the field. That field has takenher as far afield as Thailand, where last year she studiedThai massage with the masters at a beautiful resort, with wonderful people. In addition to massotherapy, she is certified in reflexology, Hellerwork, myofascialtherapy, basalt stone massage and Thai massage.

    Twenty yearsof gratitude at

Often, Barna combines study with travel. Recently, she returned from a week-long re-treat with the noted Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh in Mississippi, one of the best experi-ences ever.

The Wellness CornerIn 2011, Barna purchased the neighboring property

on the corner of Adams and 3rd Street that now houses

David Prudhommes Mederi Wellness offices. The KennyHouse and Mederi Wellness form a community WellnessCorner in the heart of Port Clinton. Dave works with themind, and I work with the body. We have had excellent re-sults collaborating to offer a full wellness experience, saidBarna. On Mothers Day, the Wellness Corner offered aweekend program that incorporated group and individualsessions at Mederi Wellness and the Kenny House alongwith an outdoor yoga class and lunch.

On the 3rd Street side of Mederi Wellness, there is a laby-rinth made of native stone that is open for anyone to useat anytime. There have been people who have walked thelabyrinth as early as 5 a.m., and late into the evening. It isgood to know that people are using the corner to be mind-ful and reduce their stress. Herb and flower gardens anda circle with outdoor yoga mats are part of the grounds atWellness Corner, all open to the community.

CIC and Sandusky MassageSince 1994, Barna, who lives on Catawba, has also had a

satellite office at the Catawba Island Club in Port Clinton.Recently she opened a new office, Sandusky Massage, lo-

cated at 121 Water Street in Sandusky. Born in Sandusky,Barna wanted to open an office in downtown Sandusky, because it was home.

    BY JEFF ROTH

    WHAT IS A GIFT?

A gift is an irrevocable transfer of an as-set without consideration from one personto another. A gift may be of tangible assetssuch as real estate, jewelry and physical ob-jects or of intangible assets such as shares ofstock, investment accounts or even insur-

ance policies. Of course cash is great.WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY IRREVO-

    CABLE?

Irrevocable means that the gift is completeand you will not get it back. That soundssimple, but there have been many parentsthat thought that what they gave could stillbe theirs when they wanted it back. It is im-portant to understand that it is no longeryours and if your child chooses to misspendyour gift there is very little you can do ex-cept never give again. It is a serious decisionwhich should be carefully thought out withfull knowledge and understanding thatyou will never have access to that propertyagain.

    HOW MUCH CAN I GIVE?

The law allows each individual to give upto $14,000 per person each calendar year. This means that if you had ten grandchil-dren you could give $140,000 total madein separate equal gifts to each grandchildper year. If you are married, you andyour spouse could double the amount to$280,000 per year.

IS THAT ALL I CAN GIVE?

Many people think that is all they can do.Actually a person can give up to $5,250,000above the annual exclusion gifts during hislifetime before a tax would be due. Thismeans that if dad gave you the farm worth$4,000,000, your dad would not owe any

    gift tax at that time.

DO I NEED TO FILE A FEDERAL GIFT

    TAX RETURN?

A gift tax return needs to be filed if yougive over the annual amount in any oneyear. The amount given would be disclosedand applied against your $5,250,000 life-

time exclusion. Once you have given in ex-cess of that amount, you would owe federalgift tax which is equal to the federal estatetax.

WHY WOULD A PERSON GIVE SUCH

    A LARGE GIFT?

If a person has a property that is rapidlyincreasing in value and it is important that

it stay in the family, the gift procedure canbe very beneficial. If you gave a piece of realestate which is next to the city limits and itwill be worth substantially more in the fu-ture, the increase in value will not be in yourestate. This is a freezing technique that canpass appreciating property from one gen-eration to the next and avoid estate tax onthe appreciated value. If you give land or anasset that you purchased for a low value youmust be very aware of the potential capitalgain tax that could affect your childs taxwhen he sells many years later. Gifting canprepare a person for Medicaid qualificationbut it must be carefully planned and haveat least a five year window after the transferbefore applying for Medicaid.

There are many valuable uses for gift-ing in estate planning and it is importantto review your assets and determine if anygifting would be beneficial for you and yourfamily. For the average person in their lateryears a gift to a grandchild can be a reward-ing event for both the grandparent and thegrandchild. Most grandchildren still havethat stock or money that grandmother gavethem twenty years ago. It will always havethat special meaning.Jeff Roth is a partner with David Bacon and

The Marblehead Lighthouse and Keepers House are fes-tively decked out in pine garlands and red bows, ready forthe holiday season. The Lady on the Lake sports two LEDcircles, having had her 150-watt halogen bulb and greenlens cover replaced late last spring. Sighted from morethan seven miles away, her new light is also green but onlyuses 20-watts of electricity. It has a battery backup in caseof power failure.

While walking the Lighthouse grounds, visitors are en-

couraged to visit the Compass Rose, a centerpiece of com-memorative bricks. Over 123 bricks were laid this year byDick Frederick, Bob Hartman, Ron Kochensparger andAlan Salzgeber. Memorial bricks may be purchased bydownloading and completing the Brick Order Form onthe website: www.marbleheadlighthouseohio.org. Brickpurchases and their placement about the Compass Roseare kept on file at East Harbor State Park office or theMarblehead Lighthouse Historical Society (MLHS) Mu-seum when it is open to the public.

Eighty-seven business members supported the Marble-head Lighthouse Society this season. Businesses as wellas regular memberships maintain the museum and theimminent construction of the Marblehead Life SavingStation Museum and Education Center. HEAD COACH: TOBY BICKEL, 11TH SEASONLAST SEASON: 21-4 (12-2 SBC)

Key Players: Hope Thorbahn; Tiffany Colston; Han-nah Weaver; Emily Ashley; Paige Culver; Kennedy Gu-las; Kristen Wood; Marissa Day

Outlook: Last year was arguably the greatest season inPort Clinton girls basketball history.

The Skins won a school record 21 games, just missedout on winning an SBC title and advanced to the Divi-sion II District Finals before losing to a great Toledo

Rogers club. And on top of that, Port Clinton returnsevery member of that team this season, led by star play-ers Hope Thorbahn and Tiffany Colston.

Both Thorbahn and Colston were all-league selec-

tions last season, but it wasnt just them who were in-strumental in leading the Skins to a great season. Last

year, juniors Emily Ashley and Hannah Weaver tookadvantage of their opportunities and Kennedy Gulas,Paige Culver, Kristen Wood, Maddy Burris and MarissaDay provided much-needed depth for the club.

For Port Clinton, their success will be determined byhow much help Thorbahn and Colston get from theirteammates, as well as the teams performance on thedefensive end and whether or not they can limit their

turnovers.Picked to finish second in the SBC by both the me-

dia and the coaches earlier this month, the Skins openwith Bellevue and Woodmore before entering confer-

    ence play against Mar-garetta.

Outlook: After a rebuilding year in

2012-13, theres hope that the PortClinton Redskins can return to theirpast form that has seen them com-pete for league championships andgo deep into the postseason, as evi-denced by their runner-up finish in the 2010 OHSAA Di-vision II Basketball Tournament.

With most of their key players back from last season anda year of experience under their belt, Troy Diels team isprimed for marked improvement from their 5-16 recordin 2012-13.

Leading the way is guard Nathan Stubblefield who burstonto the scene as a freshman last year and established him-self as one of the most dynamic players in the SanduskyBay Conference. Hes likely in for another good season, but hell need help from his teammates if Port Clinton isable to drastically improve.

One of them is senior point guard Dylan Webb. How heperforms will be key to the success of the team, especiallyuntil last years starting point guard, Brock Moore, whobroke his leg while playing basketball over the summer, returns. (Moore is hoping to return sometime in Decem-ber.) Hell need help from returning letter winner CarterRumball out on the wing and Drew Fodor, Ian Kyle andCameron Rodriguez in the post. Newcomers Tytan Rum-ball, Carters brother, and Stone Scott, Stefan Daniels andAustin Krupp will be expected to provide depth as well.

Oak Harbor High School Basketball PreviewsOak Harbor Boys BasketballHEAD COACH: ERIC SWEET, 3RD SEASONLAST SEASON: 11-12 (7-7 SBC)

    Key Players: Andy Rathbun; Josh Sar-ahman; Derek Wood; Cole Weirich; TateHaar; Ben Cochran; DeShawn Johnson;

Garrett Harvey; Paul Shay; Tyler Sievert.Outlook: In just his second season at Oak

Harbor, head coach Eric Sweet was able toturn things around and pointthe program in the right di-rection. After going 3-18 inhis first year, Sweets Rocketswent 11-12, finished fourth inthe Sandusky Bay Conference

and pushed Clyde to the limitin the sectional tournament.

Oak Harbor does, however, lose its share of key play-ers from last season, namelysecond-team SBC selectionsGreg Haar and A.J. Cecil, theteams top two scorers.

But Sweet will have a pletho-ra of players to choose from tofind that missing production,a lineup that includes qualityshooters in Andy Rathbun,Ben Cochran, Paul Shay andDerek Wood and other play-ers that can drive to the basketin Deshawn Johnson, Tyler

Sievert, Andre Ramsey, TateHaar, Cole Weirich and Bran-don Schimming. Josh Sar-ahman, Garrett Harvey andVince Szabo in the post.

In the preseason coachespoll, Huron, who tied withPerkins for the league titlelast season, was picked to fin-ish first, followed by Clyde, with Perkins, St. Mary CC,Port Clinton, Edison and OakHarbor Margaretta roundingout the conference. The me-dia picked the league to finishas follows: Huron, Perkins,Clyde, SMCC, Port Clinton,

    Oak Harbor, Margaretta andEdison.

Key Players: Andrea Cecil; Amanda Het-rick; Nikki Weis; Athena Eli; Coral Pe-tersen; Brandy Lochotzki; Emma Barney;Emma Bergman; Maddy Rathbun; AllieKuhn

Outlook: Oak Harbor has one thing go-ing for them: theyre loaded with talent.

But theyre also very young and inexpe-rienced.

After losing four key seniors from last

years squad, including their top two scor-ers (Abbie Gezo, Maria Boers) and pointguard (Makayla Carpenter), the Rocketswill be forced to fill those voids with someyounger, more inexperienced players.

Sophomore Andrea Cecil, who wasHonorable Mention in the Sandusky BayConference last season, is one of three re-turning letter winners along with seniorsAmanda Hetrick (wing) and Nikki Weis

    (post).Joining those three in the

rotation will be a numberof players, among themAthena Eli, Emma Bergmanand Brandy Lochotzki atthe wings with Allie Kuhn,Ivy Martin and MaddieRathbun in the post andfreshman Emma Barney atpoint guard. Kontak alsonotes that Olivia Rollins, who is recovering from kneesurgery, could be healthyenough to play by the endof the month.

Last season, Cecil did afine job of getting the ballout on the break and gettinghigh-percentage shots whilealso setting her teammatesup for scores. Shell haveto do that again this seasonas shell be asked to carrymore of the scoring load. And along with Cecils tal-ent and athleticism, Kontakhopes the teams condition-ing plays a key role in wear-ing down opponents andgetting wins this season.

Key Players: Connor Lenthe; Caleb Ger-ber; Dominic Manuella; James Dorko;John Rhodes; Hunter Stinchcomb;Keegan Rakosky

Outlook: After a couple of tough sea-sons, things are starting to look up forDrew Davies crew.

With just three seniors and a core ofplayers that have gained crucial experi-ence in the past few years, good things are

in store for the present and future Dan-bury Lakers.

This unit, which includes seven return-ing letter winners in Dominic Manu-ella, Caleb Berger, John Rhodes, HunterStinchcomb, James Dorko, Keegan Ra-kosky and Connor Lenthe as well as new-

comers Ryan Chapman and Jon Brooks, features some versatile athletes who willbenefit from Davies decision to have the

team switch from playing zoneto playing man-to-man defense.

Playing in the Toledo AreaAthletic Conference is no easytask. With heavyweights like Ot-tawa Hills and Toledo Christianand quality programs in Mau-mee Valley CD, Gibsonburgand Cardinal Stritch, the Lakerswill have their work cut out forthemselves, but they should beup to the task. Five of Danburysfirst seven games are on the road, but it will have opportunities to

get some early wins before get-ting into the heart of the TAACschedule.

Key Players: Erin Lavelle; Katie Almend-inger; Cassidy Rhodes; Tori Wright; AlyssaAlmendinger; Stephanie Kukay; MeganStephens

Outlook: The Lakers were good last year.

Expect them to be better this time around.Having lost just one player from a unit

that finished third in the TAAC last sea-son, Danbury should be able tocompete with the best teams inthe conference this year and makesome noise come playoff time.

The Lakers, led by Erin Lavelle,a first-team TAAC selection lastyear, have seven returning letterwinners, a group that includesAlyssa Almendinger, Katie Al-mendinger, Cassidy Rhodes, ToriWright, Megan Stephens andStephanie Kukay. It is a versatilegroup, one that has a sufficientsupply of point guards (Rhodes,

    A. Almendinger), wings (K. Al-mendinger, Lavelle, Stephens)and post players (Wright, Kukay).

And while theyre a talented bunch, howthey play together will determine whetheror not theyre successful this season. Butmore than that, its their commitment todefense that will enable them to take the

next step and become a 13-15 win teamthat will challenge for a league title.
