You’re invited to join the Humane Society of Ottawa County at its “Kitty & Kiddie Fair” this coming weekend, July 7-8. and support. In conjunction with Darke County Work-force Development, he met with many area businesses to better match the skills of the students in the school district with those required by area employers. Greenville Schools are similar to BCS in that they have also had to close some of their outlying elementary buildings. Parmigian worked to promote a positive transition between the staff, students and community members through this difficult process. He brings a wealth of educational experience to this position and embraces the challenge of leading our district.

Parmigian stated, “It will be a privilege to serve the stu-dents, families and community of BCS Schools. I will do my best to work with all district stakeholders to build for the future. I will be guided by the fact that students are job number one.”

TELL TALES from 1A

SUPERINTENDENT from 1A

A recent news article published in The Beacon has become an inspira-tion and an emotional lifesaver to an 89 year-old grandmother.

Genevieve Prorok, a retired el-ementary school librarian, continues her life of service by taking up the sewing of pillowcases for hospitalized children here in Northwest Ohio. On June 27th , Prorok donated 46 hand-made pillowcases to Linda Peiffer, re-gional coordinator for Toledo/North-west Ohio ConKerr Cancer program serving Toledo and Mercy Children’s hospital.

Before having a major stroke 3 years ago, Prorok spent many hours sew-ing dolls to be given to children in disaster situations by local firefight-ers. Since her stroke, the dolls had become too difficult for her to sew,

leaving her frustrated, feeling useless and without purpose.

On a recent visit to her daughter in Port Clinton, Barb Cabral, Prorok read of the need for pillowcases to help cheer up sick children. Follow-ing the instructions published in The Beacon, she began making pillowcas-es. The pillowcase sewing project has given her a new purpose in life and gives her joy thinking of the children who will receive them. Surrounded daily by piles of pillowcases, she is an inspiration to all. Prorok set a per-sonal goal of making one pillowcase each and every day and continues to fulfill that commitment.

Prorok said she now has a renewed mission in life and if she can find a new purpose that benefits others, she says anyone can do the same.

Edgewood Manor Health & Rehabilitation Center has just received a deficiency free health survey from The Ohio Department of Health. A deficiency free survey rep-resents that all aspects of the facility are being operated by the guidelines set forth by the State. Each department is thoroughly reviewed and evaluated by the Department, over 500 regulations in a span of four days. They found no areas of concern. Edgewood Manor has now joined a small group of facilities in the State of Ohio to earn such results.

Lori Lieb-Opfer, CEO and Administrator of Edgewood Manor is elated with the results of the 2012 survey. “ I am so very proud of our team. Each and every member of our staff helped achieve this goal and earn a deficiency free health survey. Last year only 12x% of Ohio facilities earned a deficiency free health survey. It is very rare and I couldn’t be more pleased.” Opfer added, “We know that we come to work each day, in a difficult industry, and give 100% to the care of our residents. It is heartwarming for the Ohio Department of Health to agree!”

Edgewood Manor, owned and operated by Covenant Care, recently received many achievements from their corporate office as well. They were recognized for both their Operational and Clinical Excellence.

Edgewood Manor is located at 1330 S. Fulton Street, Port Clinton.

To take a tour of the facility or for more information, call Carrie McGlothlin, Marketing & Community Outreach Director at 419-734-5506.

The 18th annual run/walk fund-raiser for Ottawa County Habitat for Humanity was a great success thanks to the help of several local businesses. The monies raised will go toward building a home for a lo-cal family who otherwise may not be able to own a home.

The day featured a 5-mile run, 3-mile run/walk and a kids fun half-mile run at Catawba Island Club on June 3. There were more than 200 runners and walkers and more than $15,000 was raised. Post-race events included a buffet, music by the Ca-lypso Gypsies and trophies for win-ners of all ages.

The CIC committee consisted of Dave Kruse, Holly Geary, Jim Wild-man, Mary Ann Alton, Michael and Virginia Schenk and many CIC em-ployee and member volunteers who all came together to give time, mon-ey and cheer on the participants.

Local businesses that helped in-cluded Miller Boat Line, Crown Bat-tery, Pier 53 Marine and Monterey Boats, Roth and Bacon Attorneys at Law, Gene Ptacek and Son Fire Equipment, Steve Hahn and Pru-dential Insurance, Chris Redfern, Firelands Winery, Freedom Boat Club, Cleveland Menu Printing, Ship Shape Marine, Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home, Baumann Auto Center, Hartung Title, North

Coast Property Management, Ken Gill Construction, Toft’s Dairy, Na-tional Bank of Ohio, Bolte Insur-ance, Catawba Mini Storage, USG, Catawba Moorings and Magruder Hospital. Logo to a Tee did all the T-shirt design and Davenport Sign provided course signage, Culligan donated on course water and Gor-don Foods, Bassett’s Market and US Foods provided food for all runners and walkers.

“This is a team fundraiser with many, many helping and caring hands working to aid a very good cause. We even have a Harley driven by Steve Smith leading the charge on a beautiful run through the Catawba Cliffs,” said Michael Schenk, CIC general manager.

Special thanks go to the Catawba Cliffs Association, Catawba Volun-teer Fire Department and Police for logistical help and the race course.

On Thursday, June 28, Joyful Connections and Ottawa County CASA held the Rally for the Kids Shopping Spree at Bassett’s Mar-ket. The lucky winner was Lynn Schmidt. Her ticket was drawn at the Rally for the Kids event in May. Schmidt was given 3 min-utes to fill as many shopping carts as possible. Before participating in the shopping spree, Schmidt and her husband Tim spent time formulating her plan of attack. The start of the shopping spree was in the produce section, but

Lynn quickly headed to the meat aisle. All together, she was able to grab more than $500 worth of groceries in the 3-minute allotted time.

The shopping spree raffle was held in conjunction with the Ral-ly for the Kids fundraising event in May. Both Joyful Connections and Ottawa County CASA are organizations that help children and families in crisis situations.

Joyful Connections mission is to provide a healthy, safe and home-like environment where

children can interact with fam-ily members in a non-judgmental setting. Ottawa County CASA’s mission is to advocate on behalf of abused, neglected and depen-dent children.

Both organizations rely heavily on the generosity of their donors and would like to thank everyone who purchased a ticket for the raffle. Also, the shopping spree and the Rally for the Kids event would not have been possible without the kind consideration and help of Mike Bassett.

Magistrate Louis P. Wargo III recently presided over a special session of the Otta-wa County Municipal Court to recognize three graduates of its Benchmark Alco-hol/Drug and Mental Health Intervention Court Program. The Court session, fol-lowed by a reception for the graduates and their supporters, honored the program’s graduates for their successful completion of the two-year court program.

“Since its inception nearly four years ago, the Benchmark Program has served the families and citizens of Ottawa County by addressing the County’s mental health and substance abuse issues,” said Judge Freder-ick C. Hany II.

Wargo, who regularly presides over the weekly court sessions, commended the graduates, stressing the fact that each of them has made great strides turning their lives around for not only their betterment but also their families, friends and our community as well.

“We’ve never seen the energy and excite-

ment before that we’ve seen with these three graduates,” he said “These particular graduates, have seen that through their perseverance, hard work and commit-ment, that they have not only bettered themselves, but others as well. All three graduates have served as a positive role model and mentor for those participants following them in the program.”

The Court’s Benchmark Intervention Program has been, with the assistance of the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office and other community agencies, supervising a rehabilitation program for chemically dependent individuals as well as individu-als with serious mental health problems charged with misdemeanor offenses since July 2008.

Funding for the establishment and op-eration of the Intervention Court was initially being supplemented by a Depart-ment of Justice Grant, but has, since that date, received the full support of the Ot-tawa County Commissioners.

As the world’s largest self-help bereave-ment organization, The Compassionate Friends offers friendship, understanding

and hope to families that have experienced the death of a child. There are more than 640 chapters in the United States, includ-ing all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. The local event is being held in conjunction with The Compassionate Friends National Walk to Remember in Costa Mesa, Calif., where as many as 1,500

The local walk will start East Harbor State Park’s

Lakeview Shelter at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 22. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. Follow-ing the walk, there will be a balloon release and potluck lunch.

“You do not need to be a member of The Compassionate Friends to join with us and you do not need to walk the full 1-mile,” says chapter leader Roseann Hickman. “We welcome everyone who wants to join hands and hearts in remembering all chil-dren who have died too soon.”

Anyone interested in walking should call Hickman at 419-308-4690 to receive a registration form. Registration is $10 and pre-registered walkers will receive a special

Compassionate Friends walk T-shirt, as well as a walk bib to record the names of those being remembered. Participants are encouraged to seek pledges that will go to the local chapter to support outreach and chapter activities.

The Compassionate Friends of Ottawa County meets at Peace Lutheran Church the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. For information, call Hickman at 419-308-4690. Firelands Regional Health System has acquired the Imaging Center, Women’s Imaging Center, Urgent Care and Occupa-tional Health Center service lines formerly operated by Northern Ohio Medical Spe-cialists. FRMC began operating the service lines effective July 2. Firelands Physician Group began operating the Urgent Care Service Line on July 1. Services will con-tinue to be offered at the 2500 W. Strub Road facility and will continue with the same hours of service.

Employees of the Imaging Center, Wom-en’s Imaging Center and Occupational Medical Center were transitioned into similar positions within Firelands, ensur-ing the integrity of services being offered. Likewise, employees of the Urgent Care were transitioned into similar positions within Firelands Physician Group.

Martin Tursky, President and CEO of Firelands Regional Medical Center, states: “It is exciting to see the strengths of Fire-lands Regional Medical Center and NOMS come together to more effectively pro-vide these services to the region currently served by both entities. We are pleased to be able to continue to enhance services and provide added convenience to the community.”

The 2500 W. Strub Road facility offers an additional location for patients to re-ceive services — similar to other satellite locations Firelands Regional Medi-cal Center and Firelands Physician Group provide throughout the region, in-cluding Physical Therapy sites, Laboratory sites and Physician Offices. Patients registering for Imaging Ser-vices and Women’s Imaging services will have the option of receiving their services at 2500 W. Strub Road or at the Main Campus facility. (Most Imaging procedures will also be available at the Strub Road facility.) Addi-tionally, patients schedul-ing digital mammography, DEXA and select ultra-sound studies can choose the Main Campus Women’s Health & Wellness Center, or the Women’s Health & Wellness Center at the Strub Road facility.

Business clients of Fire-lands Regional Medical Center Corporate Health

Center and the former NOMS Occupa-tional Health Center will be seen at 5420 Milan Road for scheduled appointments, non-injury services, work-related injuries and follow-up care, Monday through Fri-day 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Work-related injuries and follow-up care will also be seen at 2500 W. Strub Road, Suite 120, Monday through Friday 1 to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Severe injuries and injuries occurring outside of these hours should use Firelands Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Room at the Main Campus facility.

Firelands Physician Group Urgent Care will provide diagnosis and treatment of minor injuries and illnesses for all ages. Located at 2500 W. Strub Road, Suite 120, Firelands Physician Group Urgent Care is available when individuals need to be seen promptly by a physician, are unable to get an appointment with their physician, it is after hours, or if individuals do not have a primary care physician. Most major in-surances are accepted. Firelands Regional Medical Center Emergency Room will continue to serve those patients with more critical conditions. For information about Firelands Physician Group Urgent Care, call 419-557-6490 or visit firelandsphysi-

ciangroup.com.“The goal is to make all these operational

changes as smooth as possible for patients,” explains Tursky. Individuals utilizing the 2500 W. Strub Road facility will register for services by calling the Centralized Sched-uling offices at Firelands Regional Medical Center at 419-557-7840.

To learn more about the acquisition or

for information on services, visit firelands.com. Firelands Regional Medical Center is the region’s largest resource for advanced healthcare services as well as being known for providing high-quality care for daily and routine health needs.

NOMS will continue to operate its multi-specialty physician practices at 2500 W. Strub Road and throughout the region.

Dr. Jerome Webster began his duties July 2 as the sixth president of Terra State Community College.

Members of the campus community lined the hallway to greet Webster as he reported for his first day and a small reception followed.

“I am very excited, humbled and honored to serve in this role,” Webster said. “I believe so much opportunity exists at the college to serve our students and all of our com-munities with distinction. I look forward to working with what I believe is the best faculty and staff on any college

campus.”Webster served as the Vice

President for Student and Administrative Affairs at Terra since August 2008. Earlier this year, the board of trustees chose him to succeed President Dr. Mar-sha S. Bordner upon her retirement.

He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Admin-istration with a concentra-tion in human resources from Olivet College in Michigan. After working as a residence hall director and housing coordinator at Olivet, he briefly served as a human resources associate at Standard Federal Bank.

Webster returned to high-er education when he ac-

cepted a position at the University of Toledo. He spent 10 years working in various positions in university housing. After completing his master’s degree in educational technology and human resources development, Webster entered the doctoral pro-gram in higher education administration at the University of Toledo.

Participation in the distinguished Community College Presidential Fellowship Program brought Webster to Ter-ra, where he eventually was hired as the Dean of Student Services.

In January 2003, he accepted the position of Dean of Students at Lawrence Technological University in South-field, Mich. Four years later, he accepted the position of Dean of Student Affairs with Cuyahoga Community Col-lege in Cleveland.

Webster’s previous service includes being chairman of the task force on professional staff recruitment and a member of the conference host committee for the Great Lakes Association of College and University Housing Of-ficers. He was also a member and conference chairman of the Ohio Housing Officer’s organization, a member of the Ohio Council for Student Development and a delegate for the American Association of Community Colleges.

He has served as a member-at-large for the Michigan College Personnel Association, the state’s organization for professionals working in student affairs. He is past presi-dent of the Ohio Association of Community College’s Chief Student Affairs Officers group.

He is a member of Rotary Club International-Fremont Chapter, a board member of the Sandusky County Ameri-can Red Cross and a member of the development com-mittee for the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center.

PLAYTIME IN MARBLEHEADSeven baby foxes and their mom are living in the cave of rocks by Capt. Ron’s house in Marblehead. They moved to Lakeside when Ron and Mary came back from Florida, but have returned. They are the talk of the town.

Employees from the Ottawa Coun-ty Soil and Water Conversation Dis-trict and Natural Recourses Conser-vation Service met Wednesday, June 13, at the Schuffenecker Farm to talk about Great Lakes Res-toration Initiative grants.

Tom Schuffe-necker, the owner of Schuffenecker Farms, discussed his passion for no-till farming and other conservation farm-ing practices. No-till farming is when seed is planted into undisturbed soil, which keeps residue on the soil helping to diminish soil erosion, and retain soil moisture through the season. In reference to no-till farming, residue is just keeping plant matter, such as roots, stems and stalks, in the fields. In fact, Schuffenecker has a field which he has been “no- till” planting for 13 consecutive years. He also methodically rotates his crops from year to year to keep nutrients in the soil, and obtain sustainable yields. His rotation is: corn, beans, wheat, beans and corn.

When asked why he no-till farms, Schuffenecker simply stated: “Because I believe in it.”He further explained that he believes that no-till farming is the best way to keep the

soil where it belongs; after all, soil is the “farmer’s factory.” Schuffenecker went on to say that in his opinion plant roots are the best way to “till” the soil. No-till can be a sustain-able way of life for farmers in the wet soils of Northwest Ohio, especially when managed properly like Schuffenecker Farms.

Farmer spreads word about no-till method

Tom Schuffenecker explains his passion for no-till farming.

Crosswalk striping at Erie Beach and North Shore Blvd. will be reviewed by the Prosecutor.

Desdemona’s Art Gallery has moved to a bright, spacious new lo-cation in the plaza at Route 163 and Buck Road. The gallery is alongside Allure Printing and the popular Ca-noe Club Wine Bar. Artists Laura Brown (Egan) and Bailey VanKirk operate the new space. The talented mother-daughter duo are offering their oil paintings, as well as featur-ing the finest work from the out-standing island-area artist colony.

A very lively grand opening party was enjoyed by hundreds on a re-cent weather-perfect Friday night. The happy winner of the Lake Erie Islands couch throw give-away, de-signed by Brown, was Maxine France of Massillon, Ohio.

“Our goal has been to fully focus on work created around the Lake Erie area,” said Brown, “Everything in the gallery was created by artists and craftsmen working within a radius of from here to Toledo, Columbus and Cleveland. The definition of Ameri-can made!”

Much of the work is nautical in subject, and much is inspired by nature. VanKirk’s oils range from dramatic seascapes to highly detailed

wild game still lives in the Flem-ish Baroque tradition. Also an oil painter, Brown renders Lake Erie-related subjects on canvas and whim-sical mermaids on driftwood or barn wood planks.

Photographer Jeanne M. Schwerkoske is displaying stunning shots of Catawba sunsets, native flora and charming marsh creatures that include turtles, frogs and blue her-ons. Schwerkoske uses a wide range of creative printing techniques to en-hance the beautiful images. Ari Eick-ert’s crisply drawn watercolor prints of sailing scenes and picturesque landmarks are available in a variety of easily frameable mat sizes.

A devout beachcomber, John Bra-bander creates his “weed pots” from Lake Erie driftwood. He has recently adapted them beyond the usual dried weed accent vases to act as lovely candle holders and even decorative lamps when he finds an especially in-teresting piece.

Jewelry is also born from our beaches. Denise Gallup creates with sparkling sea glass while Beth Akins’ uses “lucky stones,” a treasured bone from our fun fish, the sheephead.

Visitors are finding a wealth of art to choose from. Michelle Gottschall does amazing stuffed sculpture mer-maids. Ben Kendall and Kim Carl-son create wonderful work in fused glass. Diane Freedman’s seashell en-crusted mirrors have been in great demand. Nautical tables by Greg Boltz have been a hit, as well as hand-made wooden bowls by Ralph Oxley, ceramics by Helen Brabander and Missy King, scenic watercolor prints by Jim Siemer, nautical jewelry by Lara Trech and Ann Snepp’s elegant necklaces.

“We plan to include new artists as we go along,” said gallerist VanKirk. “We have a process for accepting new artists. We want to encourage area talent, but we are very selective.”

Artisans wishing to apply should send an introduction and attach photos of their work to: [email protected].

Desdemona’s is open seven days per week throughout the summer, and five days in the fall and throughout the winter holidays. Current hours are Sunday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday and Satur-day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Local art fans gather at new Desdemona’s Art Gallery

Desdemona’s grand opening party drew a large crowd of local art fans on Friday, June 22.

Women of different ages and experi-ence levels joined Ottawa Soil & Water Conservation District at the Oak Har-bor Conservation Club, Wednesday, June 20, for the second session of the “Women in Conservation” series. This session specialized in giving women an opportunity to fire handguns and to shoot archery. Before the activities began, Bob Rogers, from the National Rifle Association, gave a safety talk on how to properly handle a firearm in order to prevent misfire and injury. Throughout the event, the women were more thoroughly instructed on technique by cer-tified professional gunmen and archers. Many of the women in attendance had never participated in either type of recreation before the session, and afterwards, all of them agreed that they felt more confident and com-

fortable with handling guns and found both sports to be enjoyable. The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District would like to thank the Oak Harbor Conserva-tion Club and all the volunteers for making this event possible.

The sightseeing cruise will depart Port Clinton at 7:30 p.m. and cruise past the Ca-tawba shoreline, Marblehead and the historic lighthouse, then continue on past the islands of Kelleys, Rattlesnake, Sugar, Green and the Bass before enjoying the sunset on the way back into Port Clinton. The Jet will be traveling at high speed to reach the different points of interest and then slow down to enjoy the sights.

Signature hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar with top-shelf cocktails and wine will be featured. The cost is $40 per person or $70 per couple. This truly unique cruise is sponsored by the Jet Ex-press and benefiting the Port Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce. Rain date is scheduled for Thursday, July 19.

Survey is available online at wil-dohio.com

COLUMBUS - The Ohio De-partment of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Wildlife is

asking Ohio waterfowl hunters to provide input on the timing of the fall waterfowl hunting season and where they prefer to hunt in Ohio.

The Ohio Wildlife Council will establish season dates and other regulations in mid-August after federal guidelines are es-tablished for the upcoming wa-

terfowl season. Biologists are seeking input from Ohio wa-terfowl hunters through this online survey so opportuni-

ties can be closely matched to the preferences of as many hunters as possible within the constraints of federal guidelines.

The survey is available at wil-dohio.com until Aug. 1. Hunters will need to have their customer identification number read-ily available (found on all Ohio hunting and fishing licenses) when they take the survey.

Similar information was solic-ited from Ohio waterfowl hunt-

ers last summer and used to set the 2011-2012 hunting season dates within each zone. This year, hunters are also asked to provide input regarding potential chang-es to goose hunting season length and bag limits as well as rate last year’s season.

ODNR ensures a balance be-tween wise use and protection of our natural resources for the ben-efit of all. Visit the ODNR website at ohiodnr.com.

SECOND ANNUAL FIRST TEE SCRAMBLEThe second annual First Tee of Lake Erie Two-Person Scramble was recently held at Ca-tawba Island Club. The winners were Ken Williams (left), Noah Sampson, Bob Gleckler, Jack Gleckler, Phillip Bolte and Joey Kurtz. Bolte and Kurtz were first with 69; Williams and Sampson followed with 70 and the Gleckers rounded out the top three with 71.

Anglers throughout the state can do their part to protect Ohio’s high quality fish-ing by reporting fishing violations they observe to the Turn In a Poacher hotline at 800-POACHER or online at ohiotip.com, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife.

Each year, the TIP hotline receives approximately 4,800 calls from concerned citizens reporting violations involving the poaching, or illegal taking, of fish and game, trespass-ing, commercialization of wildlife and the over-harvesting of fish and game. Since its inception in 1982, more than 3,000 convictions have been made using information from the hotline. While the majority of TIP reports are received during the hunting seasons, anglers should remember that the TIP hotline is available year-round.

“Double-tripping, keeping fish over the daily bag limit and snagging walleye and other species of game fish are serious violations of the law,” said Ron Ollis, law enforcement program administrator for the Division of Wildlife. “Ohio’s state wildlife officers rely on law-abiding anglers to be our eyes on the water, and we request that people report any suspicious activity that they observe.”

Anglers are reminded not to approach anyone committing a wildlife violation. Instead, take note of the violation, date, time, location and the license plates of any vehicles in the vicinity. Call 800-POACHER or go online to www.ohiotip.com to report the informa-tion. All reports are confidential and can remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a cash reward.

The TIP hotline is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays.

Ohio’s fishing regulations are available at all hunting and fishing license agents by calling 800-WILDLIFE or online at www.wildohio.com.

ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and pro-tection of our natural re-sources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR website at www.ohiodnr.com.

LEGAL AD/NOTIFICATION

A new consignment shop for kids’ gear is now open in Port Clinton. Flip Flop Kid Swap — located next to Pizza Hut at 2868 E. Harbor Road, Unit 3 — offers a variety of gently used name-brand clothing, toys, bedding and nursery needs. Items are stocked for kids 0-16.

The shop is the brainchild of a pair of Marblehead moms: Jessi-ca Szuch and Stephanie Uhinck. And with seven kids between them — the pair knows a little something about kids’ stuff.

Right now, the store is stocked with items from more than 40 consigners. When gently used,

name brand items are brought in, Uhinck and Szuch price and tag the items and put them on the floor. Once something sells, the consigners get 50 percent of the sale price.

According to Szuch, they are still accepting items.

“We will be switching seasons in August,” she said. “Keep us in mind for school shopping.”

The shop opens daily at 10 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. Mon-day through Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

For information, call Uhinck at 419-573-9124 or Szuch at 419-656-3910.
