n Don’t forget The Mitten Tree! Every year for the past 30 years, The Beacon has decorated a Christmas Tree in our entrance foyer with mittens, scarves, stocking caps, and any number of knitted items to help keep heads, hands and hearts warm this winter season. We are also collecting toys for needy families in the area. The Salvation Army will be coming to pick up the items from The Mitten Tree next Thursday, December 18, so please get your items to us before then. Thanks.
n Another wonderful Holiday Tradition is Nate’s Annu-al Christmas Benefit Breakfast with Santa. It started at Mon Ami 35 years ago when Nate Buchantz managed it. He moved it when he opened Nate’s in the Knoll Crest Center (now Waldo Peppers), and the tradition is carried on today at 1812 in downtown Port Clinton. It will be this Sunday, December 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with all proceeds going to OCJFS, the Holiday Bureau and Salvation Army. Donations of new toys, clothes and non-perishable food items are welcome. Admis-sion is $10 for adults, $5 for children 10 and under and free for kids under 3.
n The Wreaths Across America program has become so special during the Holiday Season that the Ottawa County Veterans Administration has seen fit to take it County-wide! It all started last December, in a snow-storm, at Catawba Cemetery, where Reggie Langford and Diane Belden joined forces to make it happen in a very moving ceremony. This year, wreaths will be placed at the gravesites of nearly all Ottawa County Veterans at cemeteries across Ottawa County.
n Our “Find Wylie” winner this week is Anna Jenkins who was one of 78 people to find our friendly fish hid-ing the ad for Howard Hanna Realty on page 5B in last week’s Beacon. Anna wins our weekly $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. n Port Clinton resident Tony Tucker has learned that he has Stage 3 Lung Cancer and is now waging a coura-geous battle with the disease. A group of his friends has set up a special spaghetti dinner at the Port Clin-ton VFW to help him wage this battle. It will be held on Sunday, December 21, from Noon to 6 p.m. Price for the dinner is $6 for adults and $4 for children. You get a choice of venison, ground beef or meatless spa-ghetti sauce as well as an option of gluten-free spa-ghetti. Santa, Mr. Freeze and the Heat Mizer will be there serving it all up.
n I also heard that Nick Wadsworth, who was assaulted in Wisconsin a couple of weeks back, is on the mend and has been transferred to UTMC in Toledo. We wish him well, along with his family.
n Congratulations to Becky Clemons, who we must now address as “Dr. Clemons”. She learned this week that she has earned her Doctorate in Business Administra-tion after she wrote a 200 page dissertation. She is the wife of Don Clemons and together they own Ameri-ca’s Best Motel and The Bait House in downtown Port Clinton.
n This Sunday, December 14, the Oak Harbor Knights of Columbus will sponsor their annual Breakfast with Santa at St. Boniface Catholic Church beginning at 9:30 a.m. after Mass. The menu for the all you can eat family breakfast includes: scrambled eggs, ham, homemade rolls, homemade applesauce, coffee, hot chocolate and Juice. Donation is $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12. All proceeds benefit the Ottawa County Holiday Bureau.
n Also in Oak Harbor, the Class A Performing Arts stu-dents will put on a Happy Holidays Extravaganza this Sunday, December 14, at 3 p.m. The show is free and open to the public, although monetary donations will be accepted and welcome. They will also be accepting donations to benefit the Holiday Bureau and Salva-tion Army, to include toys, new or gently used coats or canned goods.
n The 13th Annual Holiday Breakfast with the Arts will be held this Tuesday, December 16, at Port Clin-ton High School especially for PC School District residents age 60 and older. Tickets are on sale at the High School office, Mary’s Blossom Shoppe and Otto & Urban Greenhouse and Flower Shop until this Fri-day, December 12. Cost per ticket is $2 and includes the cost of breakfast. Advance purchase is required. Breakfast will begin slightly earlier this year at 8 a.m.

there was some skepticism about whether or not they would fulfill their promise of giving back all of their profits to local community organizations. That skep-ticism was laid to rest Tuesday morning when Mary Maine, the manager at Portage Resale Center, handed out checks totaling $50,000 to 31 local non-profits and
community organizations dedicated to helping with a variety of social ills in Ottawa County.
“The year has been wonderful with the stellar work by our many volunteers,” said Maine. “The community support with never ending donations and, of course, our tried and true shoppers have given Portage Resale Center the ability to give back to those in Ottawa Coun-ty that need it most.”

Portage Resale Center pays it forward to the tune of $50,000
List of 2014 gift recipients
The Port Clinton Kiwanis Club, Port Clinton Rotary and Port Clinton Lion’s Club, along with Lake Erie Adven-ture Play (LEAP), Friends of Port Clinton Parks and citi-zens have come together to raise funds and develop an all inclusive playground at Lakeview Park.
The three service clubs see the need for a new, state-of-the-art inclusive play struc-ture, which will provide play opportunities for all citizens no matter their ability level. The committee, comprised of the above participants, has been meeting with various play structure companies for about 6 months. They have settled on a design, which they presented to the city on November 17. The concept of an inclusive playground and location at Lakeview Park was approved by the City’s recreation committee.
To move forward, the committee is asking citizen’s to join them at Port Clinton City Hall on Wednesday, De-cember 17, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. to look at the current drawings, provide input and start fundraising for the park.
The committee believes for a community to thrive, it must believe in and support sustainability for ALL of its citizen’s, from birth through death. To ensure this, the community needs to create inclusive, welcoming struc-tures and facilities for people to visit and use their entire life.
Facts about our area and disability:• We have about 600 youth with various disabilities in
Port Clinton and Danbury School systems combined. • Ottawa County has the third highest population of se-
niors in all of Ohio.• In the United States, about 40% of grandparents cur-
rently provide child-care for their grandchildren and another 19% have done so in the past. 22% of them provide care 25 hours or more a week.
• In the U.S., the population 65 and older will more than double by 2050, rising from 39 million today to 89 million.
• US research by McKinsey & Company predicts that by 2015, the baby boomer generation will command almost 60 percent of net U.S. wealth and 40 percent of spending. In many categories, like travel, boomers will represent over 50 percent of consumption.
• More than 500,000 troops have been wounded in recent conflicts, many of them suffering traumatic brain injuries, amputations, severe burns, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
• The closest playground like this is located in Cleve-land.

■ Need Christmas Cookies? Two local organizations will be holding their annual Cookie Walks next Sat-
urday. The Cookie Walk at Immaculate Concep-tion Catholic Church will be held in the school gym from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Cookie Walk for the Hu-mane Society will be held at Peace Lutheran Church, 900 Jefferson St. in Port Clinton will be from 9:30 to 1:30 the same day.
■ The Ottawa County Museum at 126 W. Third Street in Port Clinton will be open additional hours on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays during the Christmas season. Hours are Noon to 3 p.m. on De-cember 24, 26, 28 and 31 as well as January 2 and 4. The museum has an extensive collection of photos and artifacts of Ottawa Coun-ty’s early settlers, includ-ing items from the Battle of Lake Erie. ■ Otterbein North Shore will hold a special Christmas Open House this Wednesday, December 17, starting at 1 p.m. They will hold a special Tree of Hope celebration at 2 p.m.

Ronald William BlackburnAug 15, 1934-Dec. 5, 2014
Ronald William Blackburn was born in Port Clinton, Ohio on August 15, 1934, the son of Douglas C. Blackburn, and Beverly Blackburn Riedmaier and stepfather, Harold (Whitey) Riedmaier, who all preceded him in death.
Ron passed away after a brief illness on December 5, 2014. He is survived by his beloved wife, Essie, who he married on December 25, 1982, their children, Becky (Gary) Quisno, David (Sharon) Blackburn, Douglas (Tami) Blackburn, Robin (Don Greenberg) Sandenburgh, Polly (Ged) Foley, Sally (John) Thomason; Grandchildren Adam (Kristin) Quisno, Mandy (Ian) Formaz, Annie Quisno, Benjamin (Sonia) Blackburn, Bailie, Breezie and Katie Blackburn, Drew and Farin Blackburn, Jamie, Elizabeth and Jake Greenberg, and Clare Foley, and three great grandchildren, Alexis, Sabrina and Emma Blackburn. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy; Essie and Ron’s son, Eric Sandenburgh, and his parents.
Ron grew up in Port Clinton, Ohio, where he graduated from Port Clinton High School in 1952. He attended col-lege at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio from which he graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1956. While at Miami, he met and married Nancy Cummins in 1955, and they were mar-ried for 24 years, until she passed away in July of 1979. On December 25, 1982 he married Essie Sandenburgh, and she survives. Together, Ron and Essie continued to raise their families, travelled extensively, and eventually settled in the Bellaire, Michigan area, where they could ski in the winter, golf in the summer, and just enjoy the beauty of Northwest Lower Michigan. In his free time, Ron was an accomplished artist, filling his and Essie’s home with many of his paintings. He loved to read, loved the Detroit Tigers AND the Lions, loved liver and onions, and remained an Ohio State fan. Mostly, though, he loved hanging out with his Beauty, Essie.
His contributions to the communities he lived in are numerous, of both his time and talents. He was a Past President of the Port Clinton City School District Board of Education, a member of the Port Clinton Yacht Club, the Catawba Island Club, served on the board of the Grass River Natural Area in Bellaire Michigan. These are but a handful of his many activites.

Sandra G. Gonzalez, 64, of Port Clinton, passed away peacefully, Monday, December 1, at her residence, sur-rounded by her loving family. Sandra was born on June 7, 1950, in Elsa, TX, the daughter of Antonio F. and Juanita (Garza) Garza.
A memorial service was held at 1 p.m., Saturday, De-cember 6, in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1509 Cedar St., Fremont, OH 43420. Renwand, 76, of Oak Harbor, died early Friday morning, November 28, 2014, at his residence, surround-ed by his loving family, after suffering over 20 years with Chronic Beryllium Disease and being nursed and taken care of by his loving wife, Barbara. Gary was born Janu-ary 14, 1938, in Oak Harbor, Ohio, to John and Bernice (Durdel) Renwand. On June 30, 1956.
Visitation was 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, December 2, at the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 165 E. Kathryn Virginia WohlersNov. 30, 1921-Dec. 3, 2014
Kathryn Virginia Wohlers, 93, a life-long resident of Oak Harbor, passed away in her sleep, with her caregivers, as she was taken by the angels to be with her Lord unexpectedly ear-ly Wednesday morn-ing, December 3, at her second home in Port Clinton.
Born on November 30, 1921, on the fami-ly farm in Salem, Oak Harbor, the daughter of John Henry and Clara Rosetta (Druck-enmiller) Wohlers.
Kathryn graduated from Salem Oak Harbor High School, Class of 1939, as Valedictorian. She played basketball in a 1940 tournament and com-peted in the 120 meter hurdles track event. Kathryn went to the Davis Business Col-lege and began her career with Hayward, Inc. shortly thereafter. She had a dedicat-ed 70 year long career as a legal secretary, retiring in October 2012.
She loved volunteering for The Salvation Army of Ottawa County, enjoyed baking, making candy and reading. She was a TRUE fan of the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Browns. Kathryn also had a passion for spending quality time with her family and friends.
She was a lifelong member of the St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Missionary Aide Society of Oak Har-bor.
Kathryn leaves to mourn her pass-ing family and her many friends.
She was preceded in death by her par-ents.
Per Kathryn’s request, there will be no
visitation and private graveside services will be held. Interment will be at the Riv-erview Cemetery in Salem Township, next to her mother and father.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Ottawa County Hu-mane Society, the Oak Harbor Library, The Salvation Army of Ottawa County or to Sts. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Oak Harbor.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Da-vid F. Koch Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Avenue, San-dusky.

Vernon S. Zenser, 93, of Oak Harbor, died Sunday evening, November 30, at Foundation Park Alzheimer’s Care Cen-ter in Toledo. He was born December 31, 1920, in Frenchtown, Carroll Township, Ottawa County, Ohio, to Oliver F. and Ma-bel (Kulow) Zenser.
Visitation will be Friday, December 12, from 2-8 p.m., with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m., at the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 165 E. Water St., Oak Harbor. The Oak Harbor Masonic Lodge #495 F&AM will conduct services at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Vern was a life member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, 165 Toussaint St., Oak Harbor where funeral services will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, December 13. Burial will be in Salem Township Union Ceme-tery, Oak Harbor. Following the service at the cemetery, a luncheon will be served in the social room of the church. The fam-ily has suggested memorials for Vernon to Shrine Children’s Hospitals, St. Paul Unit-ed Church of Christ, Heartland Hospice of Toledo, Ohio; or the donor’s choice. On Sunday, December 7, the 11th annual Tree-A-Rama charity auction benefitting the Salvation Army was held at Mon Ami. This year, the event was dedicated to Richie Saponari, the late husband of Salvation Army area director, Maureen Saponari.
The event raised nearly $14,000 through donations, a silent auction and a live auction. There was also food and live entertainment at the event. All of the money raised will go back into the communi-ty through the Salvation Army.

Mayor Vince Leone had his first Mayor’s Night Out town hall forum. The number of people attending and the discussion had at the meeting did not disappoint. The hottest topic of the night was talk of a Sober Living Community house that has been rumored to be opening on Fifth Street in Port Clinton in a residential area.
In November the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services announced that The Light House, Inc. would be receiving a grant to open a re-covery and sober living home in Ottawa County. Judge Bruce Winters founded the non-profit organization The Light House.
The Sandusky Register reported that the clean and sober living house is scheduled to open in April of 2015 after the purchase and renovation of a structure. The uncon-firmed structure is rumored to be an old church on Fifth Street.
An audience member asked what is hap-pening at the church on Fifth Street where the Sober Living Community is rumored to be going.
“I have reached out to Judge Winters and haven’t heard back yet. In 1988 the Fair Housing Act was passed and it prohibits housing discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, disability, famil-ial status and national origin. Those who suffer from alcohol and drug addiction fall under the category of disabled,” said Mayor Leone. “I want more information on this facility. I need face to face time with the Judge.”
“I have been told that it is not a halfway house, it is a sober living community. It is a place where people who need help can go to reintegrated into the community,” said Mayor Leone.
“Why don’t you ask the guy who owns the property?” said an audience member. “He’s right there!”
A man, unidentified, claimed to be the property owner and responded, “Where were your concerns two years ago when the building was falling down in disrepair? I’m working on the property and protect-ing my investment.”
Members of the audience did not receive the comments well.
“What are your plans for the building?” asked an audience member.
“What I do with it is my business,” said the property owner. “There is no deal in writing at this time.”
“What we have here is people just ex-pressing concerns,” said Mayor Leone. “Everyone needs help sometimes. These people definitely deserve to be helped. And what the Judge is doing to help these people, kudos to him. We should all reach out our hands to help our brothers and sisters.”
“The issue isn’t helping people, it’s the location!” yelled someone from the audience. Many in the crowd expressed they were feeling the same.
Another audience mem-ber said, “Alcoholics don’t affect property value, drug addicts do. Dealers will stand outside and wait. It will branch out. There are a lot of children and elderly in that neighborhood. I want to help, but this is a bad idea in such a small, residential neighborhood.”
“It’s getting the people who need help away from their unhealthy environ-ment,” said Port Clinton City Councilman Beth Gillman. “We need to em-brace something that could help, not build up walls.”
“That’s why I want to get the information about the facility, we are not sure of details or a plan at this point,” said Mayor Leone. “We need to not make as-
sumptions. You being here showing your concern will grab the attention from Judge Winters and he will get information to the community.”
City Zoning Inspector and Fire Chief Kent Johnson told the audience that he has contacted Judge Winters and The Light House asking that they submit a business plan for their organization.
“They have not submitted their plan to the City yet,” said Chief Johnson. “It’s ear-ly to be looking at this. We already have some of these facilities in town already.”
“Let’s not jump to conclusions,” said Mayor Leone.
“We just want to know what’s going on,” said an audience member.
“The property value isn’t my concern. It’s the safety of my family,” said a father in the audience. “I know drug addicts, they will stop at nothing and do anything to get their fix.”
The mayor then looked to the high school students that were attending the forum.
“Raise your hand, how many of you know someone that does drugs,” said Mayor Leone.
Every high school student in attendance raised their hand.
“It’s part of our society if we like it or not. Those people are still part of our commu-nity,” said Mayor Leone.
“We are being backdoored with no in-formation to the people in that neighbor-hood,” said an audience member. “We are seeing newspaper articles and Facebook updates about this, but there is no real in-formation. No one knows anything.”
The mayor, again, assured that informa-tion would be found and brought to the citizens as soon as it was available from Judge Winters.
Another topic touched at the forum was the economy of the City.
“We need tax dollars,” said Mayor Leone. “The pockets of the City of Port Clinton are empty. Tourism is an industry; like it or not. The population of Ottawa County goes from 44,000 to upwards of 255,000 in the summer time. We need to get people to stay here and not use us as a parking lot. We have inherited a mess from an ad-ministration that couldn’t invest in itself.”
The next Mayor’s Night Out town hall meeting will be held on Thursday, January 8, with the time and place to yet be deter-mined.

Mayor’s Night Outbrings heated discussion
BY JASMINE CUPPPort Clinton resident Tom Allen recently celebrated his
25th anniversary working for the Kroger Company. While talking with Tom, it is easy to see that he loves his job.
“I like to talk to people and I love getting paid,” said Tom, “but, I know I have to work hard.”
Tom is a bagger at Kroger and has met many people throughout his 25 years of service.
“I love my job,” said Tom. “I love living here. I love work-ing close to my home. My co-workers are nice and I like helping and listening to them. My job is important, it’s
more important than anything else. I always put Kroger number one. I work and shop here.”
Not only has Tom helped the Kroger Company and its patrons with their groceries, but he has helped people in the community in ways that he hasn’t realized.
“I posted a photo of Tom on Facebook celebrating his 25 years at Kroger and I was overwhelmed with the re-sponse,” said Cathy Allen, Tom’s sister. “It was great to see the positive response from the community to Tom.”
Cathy also heard, in personal messages, how Tom has helped people be more accepting of people with disabili-ties. Tom has downs syndrome.
“A woman named Jessica sent me a message saying that she used to live in Port Clinton and she moved away. Eight years ago she had a child with downs syndrome. She said there was a moment when she was alone in the hospital room; her husband wasn’t in the room and they had taken the baby away to clean her after she was born. She said this is when it really struck me that my baby had downs syndrome. Jessica said that the only person she knew that had downs syndrome was Tom Allen,” said Cathy as tears welled in her eyes. “Jessica said she thought to herself, “Tom is okay, I know my child will be okay too”.”
Cathy said that their mom’s vision for Tom is coming true. She always wanted Tom to grow up to be a role mod-el for other people with disabilities.
“He is doing that now,” said Cathy. “Tom is self-suffi-cient and happy.”
“I have good friends here,” said Tom. “They help me and that means a lot.”

Tom Allen celebrates 25 years with Kroger

lies lined the streets of downtown Port Clinton for the lighted parade. The parade, which was part of the Com-munity Christmas and tree lighting ceremony, was put on by Main Street Port Clinton. There were over 40 floats in the parade.
Winning first place for best float in the parade was the Fraternal Order of Police Association #34 depicting The
Grinch Who Stole Christ-
mas. Winning second place was Immaculate Conception School and winning third place was Phil’s Inn, PC Plumb-ing and Slater’s Madison Street Pub.
The lighted parade started at Monroe and Perry and ended at Adams Street Park. At Adams Street Park spec-tators gathered to watch Mayor Leone and three lucky children light the Community Christmas tree. After the tree was lit, PCHS’s Touch of Class performed for the crowd.

On Saturday, December 13, the Humane Society of Ottawa County will be holding a Cookie Walk at Peace Lutheran Church. All of the proceeds from the event go to the Humane So-ciety of Ottawa County. The Cookie Walk gives people in the area the chance to get holiday cookies without turning on their ovens all while donating to a great cause. There will be a large variety of cookies that will be able to be purchased by the pound.

On Sunday, December 14, the Oak Harbor Knights of Columbus will be sponsor-ing their annual Breakfast with Santa at St. Boniface Catholic Church beginning at 9:30 a.m. after Mass. The menu for the all you can eat family breakfast includes: scrambled eggs and ham, homemade rolls, home-made applesauce, coffee, hot chocolate and juice. Donation is $6 for adults and children under 12 $3.
All proceeds will benefit the Ottawa County Holiday Bureau. Santa Claus plans to be there with treats for the children.

On Sunday, December 21, Santa will be flying in to the Erie Ottawa International Airport at 11 a.m. Santa will be taking Christmas lists from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Liberty Aviation Museum Lobby. There will also be free hot dogs, Christmas cookies and hot chocolate for the children attending the event.

Local artist, Rick Dziak, will hold open studio sessions starting in January 2015. Informal instruction will be of-fered during these two hour sessions as needed. There will be no charge to attend and days and times may be determined by applicant’s needs.

These open studio sessions replace the earlier adver-tised classes that would have been more formal.
Mr. Dziak is an award winning artist who is represent-ed by self at Dziak Studio/Gallery, Ferguson’s Gallery, and Collector’s Corner at the Toledo Museum of Art. He also belongs to several art organizations both locally and nationally, and he holds signature status in Oil Painters of America, a national award. Behind a combined 34 points from the Rumball brothers, Port Clinton defeated Wood-more, 70-59, to give Von Graffin his first victory as head coach of the Redskins.
Tytan Rumball led all scorers with 19 points and Carter chipped in with 15 to help Port Clinton rally from an early deficit to claim victory.
Down six points early in the second quarter, Port Clinton went on an 11-0 run and outscored the Wildcats, 19-13, in the period to take a 31-28 lead at the half.
The Redskins, who pushed the lead to 50-37 midway thru the third quarter, led 52-46 heading into the final period.
In all, four Port Clinton players finished with double figures. Ryan Alexander came off the bench to score 11 points and Stefan Daniels finished with 10.
Grant Weis led Woodmore with 17 points and Drew Lewandowski chipped in with 14.
Bellevue 63, Port Clinton 54With the score tied at the end of the first quarter, Bellevue took the lead for good in
the second quarter before hanging on to defeat Port Clinton, 63-54, in non-conference action.
The Redmen, who built a 19-15 lead early in the second quarter, were able to answer every Redskin rally, the last one coming late in the third quarter when Port Clinton, which had scored seven consecutive points after trailing by 11 to bring the score to 42-38, put the game away on a three-pointer by Dylan DeWitt.
DeWitt and Quinton Brimmer led Bellevue with nine points apiece, Daniel Thatcher had eight points and Thomas Pressler scored seven.
Ryan Alexander led all scorers with 12 points and Stefan Daniels and Carter Rumball had 10 points apiece.

levue, the Port Clinton Redskins rebounded with three victories, winning those games by a combined 95 points.
The most recent win, a 58-31 defeat of Mar-garetta, saw Bethany Urban lead Port Clinton with 16 points and seven rebounds and Han-nah Weaver chip in with 13 points and 10 boards.
The ‘Skins (3-1, 1-0 SBC) only led 12-9 after one quarter and 26-20 at halftime before slow-ly building the lead by outscoring the Polar Bears, 32-11, in the second half.
Sydney Alexander also finished in double figures, scoring 12 points, and Emily Ashley had nine points in helping to lead Port Clin-ton to its first win in Sandusky Bay Conference play.
Margaretta got 12 points from Alex Michel and seven from Kylie Dickman.

Following a difficult loss to Genoa, Oak Harbor re-bounded to win its first Sandusky Bay Conference game of the year, defeating Edison, 54-52, in thrilling fashion.
With her team trailing by one, sophomore forward Emma Barney connected on a three-pointer from the right wing with 1 minute, 10 seconds remaining to give the Rockets the lead for good and account for the final scoring.
In a back-and-forth game that saw the lead change hands numerous times, Megan Dunnavant connected on a free throw with 1:22 to play to put the Chargers ahead, 52-51.
Oak Harbor forward Andrea Cecil led all scorers with 18 points and Barney finished with 13. Maddy Rathbun had eight points and 10 rebounds and freshman Ashley Riley hit two 3-pointers in her first varsity game.
Edison’s Brianna Pittenger scored 16 points and Erica Reber had 12.
The Rockets dominated early, taking a 17-4 lead after one quarter before the Chargers, who cut the deficit to 24-20 at halftime, stormed back to take a 32-26 lead.
Oak Harbor, which improved to 2-1 and 1-0 in the Sandusky Bay Conference, responded with an 8-0 run as Barney and Riley hit two 3-pointers that were sand-wiched around two free throws by Rathbun.
Genoa 49, Oak Harbor 41Oak Harbor’s annual matchup with Genoa didn’t fare so
well as the Comets took control early in the second quar-ter before holding off a late rally to defeat their Ottawa County rivals, 49-41.
The Rockets looked sluggish as Genoa employed a zone defense that made it difficult for Oak Harbor to set up its
offense.The turning point came early in the first quarter with
Comets trailing, 11-6. Eight straight points helped Genoa (1-2) take the lead at 14-11 before building the advantage to as high at 14 when Carly Gose drilled a baseline jumper to make it a 42-28 game early in the fourth quarter.
Late in the first quarter, a steal and a basket by Hal-ey Pickard cut the deficit to 11-8 before a free throw by Christy Dazley and a three-pointer by Caitlyn Shessler gave the Comets the lead for good at 12-11.
The Rockets, who trailed 32-23 at halftime, made a rally in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit from 12 points to five when forward Andrea Cecil connected on a three-pointer to make it 44-39 with 1 minute, 14 seconds re-maining.
But several missed opportunities on for Oak Harbor, as well as five Genoa free throws, put the game away.
Gose led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points, and Emily Edwards finished with 11. Christy Dazley finished with seven, Haley Pickard had six and Erica Harder, who played a significant presence in the post for her team, chipped in with five points.
Cecil led all scorers with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Emma Barney contributed with eight points and Maddy Rathbun had 17 rebounds.
Oak Harbor 85, Rossford 50In the opener against the Lady Bulldogs, Oak Harbor
controlled things from the outset, outscoring their oppo-nents by 19 points in the first quarter on their way to an 85-50 victory.

The Danbury Lakers started the season off with a tough non-conference loss, fall-ing, 59-21, to Huron last week.
The Tigers (2-1), led 17-2 after one quar-ter and pushed the advantage to 30-10 at halftime.
Huron got a game-high 14 points from Hannah Cantrill, nine from Monika Giar-dina, and Ali Grendow and Jessica Carroll finished with seven points apiece.
Danbury got five points from Stephanie Kukay and four from Lexi Mitchell.
Old Fort 64, Danbury 39Holding a four-point lead early in the
third quarter, the Old Fort Stockaders took control with a 12-0 run on their way to a 64-39 non-conference win over Danbury.
Old Fort, which led 28-24, scored 12 con-secutive points to push the advantage to 16 points, effectively putting the game away.
Led by Alli Adelsperger, who scored seven of the points during the spurt, the Stockaders scored in a variety of ways,
converting on a three-pointer and an out-back.
Sarah Bell led all scorers with 15 points and Peyton Miller chipped in with 12 to lead Old Fort.
Alyx Perram led the Lakers with 14 points and Stephanie Kukay contributed with 10.
Danbury BoysSt. Mary CC 94, Danbury 55Danbury was able to hang around for
one quarter before St. Mary Central Cath-olic pulled away for a 94-55 win over the Lakers last week.
The Panthers used their athleticism and size to their advantage as they built on their first-quarter lead, which stood at 14-11 before SMCC outscored Danbury, 31-12, in the second period to take a 45-23 lead into the half.
Melvin Jackson led all scorers with 27 points, Trent Zimmerman scored 17 and Hayden Snow finished with 11.
The Lakers got 13 points apiece from John Rhodes and Caleb Gerber, and Ryan Chapman chipped in with 12.

Danbury Local Schools will be offering the American Red Cross Lifeguard Train-ing Course beginning Friday, January 9. Class will be held January 9, 10 and 11; and January 16, 17 and 18. Participants must attend all six classes. Additional require-ments are participants must be at least 15 years of age and must pass a swim test prior to taking the class.
Fee for the course is $165. Lifeguard manual and pocket mask for CPR seg-
ment are included in the fee.

Otterbein North Shore, a faith-based nonprofit senior lifestyle community in Lakeside-Marblehead, Ohio, has announced the selection of Jennifer Lenthe, RNBSN, as its new executive director. Ms. Lenthe will fill the va-cancy created by Tom Keith’s departure in September to join a senior living community in Jackson, Michigan.
“We are very pleased to announce this appointment,” reported Jason Miller, Vice President of Operations for Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Communities. “Jen has ex-celled as Director of Nursing providing leadership and care for our residents and rehabilitation patients. To have her step into the role of executive director will pro-vide a seamless transition as we continue to fulfill the Otterbein mission of enhancing quality of care and ho-listic growth of older persons in the north shore region.”
Prior to joining Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices in 2012 as Director of Healthcare Services Jen served sev-eral years as an intensive cardiac care nurse. In 2006 she realized a great passion for elder care and services when she transitioned into long-term care as a care co-ordinator, nursing supervisor and assistant director of nursing.
Jen grew up on Catawba Island in Port Clinton and graduated from Bowling Green State University with a major in nursing. Jen had the unique opportunity of completing her Administrator in Training program with Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices. Jen and her hus-band, Steven, have resided in Marblehead for the last fourteen years and are minutes away from Otterbein North Shore. Natalie Faye Eyink of Oak Harbor has received the Wil-liam Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Eyink will receive $1,826 towards tuition for the 2014-2015 aca-demic year.
This scholarship is funded through an endowment giv-en to BGSU Firelands by The Hearst Foundations. The Foundations were established in the mid 1940s by pub-lisher and philanthropist William Randolph Hearst. Port Clinton High School Touch of Class was selected to perform the National Anthem for the Cleveland Cava-liers game on Wednesday, January 21, as they take on the Milwaukee Bucks at 7 p.m. This game is sold out to the general public, however, PCHS has been given a special bank of additional seats to be sold to the community in support of Touch of Class.

The not-for-profit federal credit union, Commodore Perry, has quietly been hard at work making some big changes for credit unions everywhere over the last three years, according to an article published in the national industry-leading magazine The Credit Union Times last month.
Credit unions undergo routine examinations by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) to assess how well the credit union is operating. The scores from these exams are determined through a combination of reviewing the credit union’s financial statements as well as an on-site exam performed by an examiner from the NCUA.
It was shortly after Commodore Perry FCU’s regu-larly scheduled exam that the credit union’s top execu-tives, CEO Michael S. Barr and President Thomas Renz, learned that their credit union’s exam report contained “falsehoods and inaccuracies”, an act of retaliation from the examiner who Commodore Perry’s management team say “harassed and bullied employees, particularly female employees” so much so that the executives be-lieved the organization was not only morally but legally responsible to take action.
After making no progress informally appealing the un-fair results of the exam, the two realized just how difficult it was for any credit union, particularly a small institu-tion like Commodore Perry, to file an appeal against the NCUA’s exam results. Commodore Perry’s ended their appeal in late March 2013 but the fight to change the ap-peals process for future credit union exams didn’t stop there.
Renz feels that it is of vital importance to protect the rights of all credit unions, especially small credit unions like Commodore Perry FCU. Renz reached out to other credit union officials in his interview with the Credit Union Times saying, “If you feel like none of this matters because it hasn’t affected you, then you’re lucky it hasn’t. But if it ever does, you will sadly regret having not done
more to protect your due-process rights prior to having them called into question.”
Because of the hard work of Renz throughout the ap-peals process, Commodore Perry Federal Credit Union received the Political Action Award at the CUNA Gov-ernmental Affairs Conference’s 2013 Trailblazer Awards in Washington, D.C. Commodore Perry Federal Credit Union is the first Ohio Credit Union to win any Trail-blazer award.

The Fleet 6 student of the month for November is Gar-rett Hirt, the son of Jennifer and Kurtiss Hirt. Garrett has been involved in Boy Scouts, Flag Football and is a server at his church. His favorite subject at PCMS is Science. When asked what he enjoys the most about school he said, “My teachers and the freedom to be myself.”
Elena Kessler is the Fleet 7 November student of the month. She is involved in Student Council, Ski Club, Swimming, Volleyball, Gymnastics, and her church’s youth group. What she enjoys most about school is meeting new people and learning, her favorite subjects are math and science. Elena is the daughter of Slate and Mary Kessler.

Port Clinton High School announced the Senior Spot-light for November 2014 is Andrew Cline.
Andrew is Vice President of National Honor Society and a member of Leadership Council. Last year he served on the committee to bring hundreds of students to PCHS as part of the Ohio Association of Student Councils An-nual Conference. He has been on the Redskin Football team for the past four years, spending a great deal of time weightlifting in the off season.
Andrew was awarded the Captain Award as a junior and received multiple honors this season: Most Improved
Offensive Lineman, Redskin Sportsmanship Award, and 2nd Team SBC Offense. Last year, Andrew was a member of the wrestling team and received the Tomahawk Award. In addition, he has been a member of the PCHS band for four years, he has worked at Bassett’s Market and Dock’s Beach House.
Andrew is the son of Leigh Carroll and is appreciative of the special influence his grandfather, John Carroll, has had on his life. Next year he plans to continue his ath-letic career while pursuing a major in history/secondary education.

On Monday, December 8, Port Clinton Middle School students in Mr. Ron Aukerman’s STEM (Science Technology Engineer-ing and Math) lab participated in the Hour of Code. Last year, the Hour of Code made history. In one week, 15 million students tried computer science.
The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify
code and show that anybody can learn the basics. Students participated online developing their own games. Hour of Code events are held December 8-14 during Computer Science Edu-cation Week to help reach 100 million students by the end of the year.
