CLAUDIA WALLER ORLANDI PhD

Claudia’s involvement with the dog fancy began in the 1960’s as a Junior Handler of the St.Bernard, Ch. Bowser Waller. Although she has shown various breeds of dogs since, for over 20 years her passion has been breeding Basset Hounds. The Orlandi’s Topsfield Kennel is located on 200 acres in Vermont and can house between 40 to 50 Basset Hounds. Claudia and her late husband, Dom, have owned and produced over 100 Champions. Topsfield Bassets hold various Bred and All-Breed records and include National Speciality winners at all levels. Ch. Topsfield Bumper Cars C.D. ROM, a National BISS winner, was the No. 1 Hound All Breeds in 2001, and No. 2 Hound All Breeds in 2002 and is the top Group Winning Basset Hound in the history of the breed with 250 group firsts. Winner of 45 Best in Shows, Bumper Cars, to date, also holds the record for most Hound Group firsts (117) of any hound breed won in a single year. Ch. Topsfield – Vision Silver Noodles is the top winning Basset Hound bitch in breed history. Topsfield Basset Hounds have won over 100 All breed Best in Shows, over 500 Group Firsts and numerous Best in Speciality wins. They have also received a record breaking 4 Hound Dog of the Year Awards, which is awarded to the hound winning the most group firsts in a calendar year. They have been No. 1 Basset All Systems for a record 11 consecutive years.*

Claudia has served on the Basset Hound Club of America’s Health & Research Committee and has chaired Member Education for which she has designed an innovative concept called Basset Hound University. She is presently Chairman of BHCA Judges/Breeders Education. Since 1997, she has authored the column, “Breeder’s Toolbox,” in the BHCA newsletter. She speaks at numerous National Specialties and dog clubs and has been a speaker for the AKC/CHF Breeder’s Symposia, the Eukanuba Breeder’s Symposium and various AKC Judge’s Institutes. She developed a home study programme for breeders called the ABC’s of Dog Breeding, which is sponsored by the American Kennel Club and the Canine Health Foundation.

She judges Basset Hounds, Dachshunds, P.B.G.V., Beagles, Basenjis, Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Junior Showmanship. She is 2009 Dogs in Review Outstanding Breeder nominee and winner of the 2009 American Kennel Club Breeder of the Year Award.

MARIANNE R NIXON

My husband and I bought our first Basset Hound in 1962 and bred our first litter in 1964. We were lucky to breed Ch. Brackenacre Annabella in this litter and 17 more UK Champions plus several overseas Champions followed, all descended in direct line from Annabella. I became interested in judging various breeds in the Hound Group and now give CC’s in 18 Hound breeds. I have judged Bassets in Scandinavia, Europe and in Australia. But most notable was the Hound Group at Crufts.

licensed events.• When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a

busy holiday route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams.• If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea

at all.• The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of

water available to drink.• Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around the

dog.• When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle.• Keep the dog in the shade - take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have plenty

of water available to drink so your dog stays well hydrated.• Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for extended

lengths of time. Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could

lead to dire results. Please look after your dog’s welfare. WaRnInG: IF YouR doG Is Found To Be aT RIsK FoRCIBle enTRY To YouR VehICle MaY Be neCessaRY WIThouT lIaBIlITY FoR anY daMaGe Caused. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog’s health and welfare at risk by any action, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the General Committee for disciplinary action under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. Exhibitors/Competitors are reminded that show societies have the right under Kennel Club Regulation to refuse any entry.

18. Not for Competition entries will be accepted. Details of each dog so entered must be recorded on the entry form and must be Kennel Club registered.

19. Any owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog is requested to remove as soon as possible any fouling caused by their dog(s) at any Kennel Club licensed event within the licensed venue and within the environs of that event including car and caravan parks and approaches. Adequate receptacles for the disposal of such fouling will be provided.

20. Should the Judge be prevented from fulfilling his/her engagement the committee reserve to themselves the right of appointing another judge to fulfill his/her duties. Exhibitors are at liberty to withdraw from competition but no entrance fee can be returned.

21. No person shall carry out punitive correction or harsh handling of a dog at any time whilst at the licensed venue including its environs, car park and caravan parks and approaches.

22. The owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog at Kennel Club licensed events must at all times ensure that the dog is kept under proper control whilst at the licensed venue, including its environs, car and caravan parks and approaches. This Regulation applies before (at any time during the set up period at the venue), during the event and afterwards (at any time during the breakdown of the event).

23. Every exhibitor shall ensure that whilst the dog is being exhibited, its handler shall display the correct ring number.

healTh and saFeTY deClaRaTIonExhibitors and spectators are reminded that, just as the Basset Hound Club has a responsibility to ensure the health and safety of all those attending their event, exhibitors show at their own risk if conditions are not ideal and have a duty and responsibility for their own safety. They are therefore expected to take great care to avoid guide ropes, uneven surfaces and other hazards, which are inevitable and integral elements of a dog show. Those bringing and using portable items of equipment such as folding chairs, trolleys, cages, and grooming tables also have a responsibility to ensure that their tools, equipment and collapsible furniture is used and erected safely and does not constitute a hazard to others. Exhibitors are also reminded that they should wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the prevailing conditions on the site.
