St. Mary Catholic School Administration, Faculty, Staff, and Students welcome Fr. Alberto Ortega to our parish! We look forward to having him visit our class-rooms and special events. Fr. Ortega is from Columbia and has been serving in the Diocese of Raleigh for several years.

Report Cards have been emailed to par-ents. All families PreK-8 should have received the Parent Conference Schedule last week. We are assuming that all par-ents will visit the teachers in person,

however if a phone conference would be better for you, please email your child’s teacher to tell them that you request a phone conference at your assigned time and include your contact infor-mation in the email. If you choose to trade an appointment with another parent, please let the teacher know. MASKS ARE REQUIRED INSIDE THE SCHOOL!Scholastic Book Fair Returns On Monday, Nov. 15th, during Parent Conference hours, the SMS Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the cafeteria in the lower school. It would be a good time to choose books for Christmas presents.

Mrs. Karen Dries, lower school Spanish and Resource teacher, has just published a book for elementary grades. Our own “guest author” will be present to personalize copies of her book for your child or other children for whom you are purchasing gifts. Do stop by!

Arrival to School Please have your child(ren) at school by 8:00 am each day. Teachers begin the classroom routines promptly at 8:00 when the bells ring. We would like to include the Pre-K in this sched-ule as well.

EANS II Forms We have sent forms home today in envelopes addressed to Mrs. Price. I ask that you please fill them out and return them sealed by Monday, Nov. 15th. I am attempting to apply for govern-ment relief funds for support of safety and learning during COVID and need a certain percentage of income levels to re-ceive the funds. The forms will only go to me and I will not be forwarding them to anybody. Size of family when compared to

income could qualify our school for these much needed funds. Thank you in advance for participating. Your children will ben-efit from the funds we receive.

Congratulations to Charlotte (6th) who won the $25 Visa card from the Spooktackular Ring Toss Drawing!

Picnic Table SponsorshipsYou may have noticed that we have many picnic tables in our lower school courtyard and in the sandy playground at Tileston. If you would like to sponsor a table for $200, please contact the school office and we will send you the form to fill out with the dedication you would like included on the table plaque. This request is for our school parents and parishioners. Our children and other church groups have been enjoying the tables outside for lunch and learning in the fresh air. Thank you in advance for your support.

Dress Codes We have reviewed dress code guidelines with your children and will be expecting those guidelines to be followed. Please review the handbook..

Formation Update!

Dear Friends,

We have over 225 enrolled chil-dren/youth

from kindergarten through high school, and I am thrilled to announce that we have opened enough classes to accom-modate everyone.

All Confirmation students will be meet-ing in the church instead of the Tileston

building due to a movie being filmed. We anticipate this arrangement lasting for only a few weeks. We will keep you posted as to when they will be able to gather in Tileston again.

Registration is now closed. Due to COVID restrictions, and as an act of charity and love for our neighbor, we must be very diligent and careful about how many people we are allowing in each classroom.

Peace in Christ! Deacon John Walsh

MASS HEALTH INFORMATION

Out of an abundance of caution, masks will be required to be worn over the nose and mouth at all the masses (daily & week-end) for any attendees aged 2

yrs and over at all times. Masks will be provided for those who enter our vestibule/sanctuary maskless.

We are trying to organize our holiday activities.

Thanks to our St Mary School and staff, St Mark School, and UNCW staff and students, we will be helping many people with full baskets of the ma-kings for a Thanksgiving feast. I have plenty of bas-kets promised but need help with distribution on site and deliver of Thanksgiving bas-kets to guests that are una-ble to pick them up them-selves on Tuesday, Novem-ber 23rd. . Please contact me by phone or email if you are willing to help. The bas-kets tend to be heavy so mus-cles are helpful !!!

My next task will be to decide

how to handle our Christmas activities; you’ll hear more about that once I have Thanksgiving under control! It’s a challenge to run our holiday projects in a Covid world, but we are determined to do the best we can.

Support our Seminarians

Knights of Columbus are committed to providing moral, financial and spiritual support to our future priests and religious at all stages of their formation. Again this year our local council is participating in the Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP). Knights stand in solidarity with our priests and religious. Through this program, council and parish families will raise funds to support seminarians in our local area. Though financial support is vitally important, it is not the only aspect of the RSVP. Councils are also called to provide their “adopted” seminarian or religious aspirant with moral support and prayers for their success. This year Council 1074 is helping four seminarians through this program, and to fund this effort we’re conducting a raffle. There are great prizes and tickets are available after all the masses this weekend. A pack of 5 tickets costs $20, and the drawing will be held Dec. 3. You can also purchase tickets by visiting the Council’s website at http://www.kofc1074.org.

We and our seminarians sincerely appreciate your sup-port.

The impact of social media on the rise of human traf-ficking and why trafficking is a respect life issue

For our November show, our host, Judi Paparozzi, who teaches and trains extensively on human trafficking, gives a virtual talk for Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southport, in honor of Respect Life Month, on how our kids could be vulnerable to trafficking if allowed unsupervised and unfettered access to all online social media formats. In addi-tion, she gives tips on what

parents and grandparents can do to partner with teens to protect them online. Finally, she discusses why trafficking in all its forms is a respect life issue for Catholics.

This show will air on Wil-mington Catholic Radio on stations 91.7 FM, 93.1 FM, and 103.1 FM in Wilmington on Sunday, November 14th, at 6:00 pm.

This show can also be heard via live-stream on our website at www.wilmingtoncatholicradio.com, by clicking on the "Listen Now" tab.

ENDURING FAITH

Enduring Faith

A documentary film on the faith, perseverance and inspiring exam-ple of Indigenous Peoples across North America.

Enduring Faith: The Story of Native American Catholics dives deep into the rich contribution of Native Americans in the tapestry of the Catholic faith. A must watch with the family, classroom or faith group.

Available to all at kofc.org/enduringfaith.

The Fr. James E. Waters Colum-biettes Auxiliary #12017, based at St. Mark Church, has received the MMJ Mangan Award for achievements during the 2020-2021 year… for the 11th time!

The Supreme Council was im-pressed with all the good works accomplished this past year. Despite Covid-19 obstacles, the auxiliary has continued to apply its time, talent, and treasure to serve those in need: to promote the spiritual, social, and charita-ble welfare of its members, to aid charitable institutions in the Wilmington community, and to support the programs of its affil-iated Knights of Columbus Council.

When the Auxiliary was found-ed, there were only 2 other aux-iliaries in North Carolina. We thank our members, especially our 10 charter members, for their dedication. To continue to thrive we seek new members to bring new ideas and energy into our organization. Members do not need to be St. Mark Parish-ioners.

If you are interested and would like information (or know a pos-sible candidate for us to reach out to), please contact Vice President, Barbara Schradin at [email protected].
