WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS

We would like to extend a warm welcome this week to these new

parishioners at St. Timothy:

Don and Janice Fey; and Wayne and Lynn Jeckell.

DONATION ENVELOPES

Many of you have asked when the donation envelopes will be

mailed out. The company advised that some were sent out

December 18 and another batch went out on December 31.

Hopefully, the envelopes will be distributed this week. Sorry for

any inconvenience.

Life is not just a succession of events or experiences. It is a

search for the true, the good and the beautiful. It is to this end

that we make our choices; it is for this that we exercise our

freedom; it is in this – in truth, in goodness and in beauty – that

we find happiness and joy.

-Pope Benedict XVI

HOW I SPENT MY HOLIDAY

After Christmas, a teacher asked her young pupils how they

spent their holiday away from school. One child wrote the

following:

“We always used to spend the holidays with Grandma and

Grandpa. They used to live in a big brick house, but Grandpa

got retarded, and they moved to Florida. Now they live in a tin

box and have rocks painted green to look like grass. They ride

around on their bicycles and wear name tags because they

don’t know who they are any more. They go to a building

called a wrecked center, but they must have got it fixed

because it is all OK now, they do exercised there, but they

don’t do them very well.

“There is a swimming pool, too, but they all jump up and down

in it with hats on. At their gate, there is a doll house with a little

old man sitting in it. He watches all day so nobody can

escape. Sometimes they sneak out and go cruising in their

golf carts. Nobody there cooks, they just eat out. And they eat

the same thing every night—early birds.

“Some of the people can’t get out past the man in the doll

house. The ones who do get out bring food back to the

wrecked center for pot luck.

“My Grandma says that Grandpa worked all his life to earn his

retardment and says I should work hard so I can be retarded

someday, too. When I earn my retardment, I want to be the

man in the doll house. Then I will let people out, so they can

visit there grandchildren.”

RESPECT LIFE

This year on Friday, January 22nd marks that fateful day, the

anniversary of Roe v. Wade, where the outcome declared that a

baby may be aborted in the womb. Today it is even further

advanced where in some places the abortion may take place up

to the moment of birth.

BE SILENT NO MORE

Please join the Respect Life Committee in praying the Rosary of

the Unborn and the recitation of the Chaplet of the Unborn on

Friday, January 22nd at 9:00 AM (immediately following the

8:30 AM Mass).

Our Blessed Mother has promised "For each Hail Mary prayed

from a loving heart will rescue one of these innocent lives from

death by abortion"

Imagine the impact you will have in saving countless lives by

joining us in prayer.

ENTERING INTO THE LIGHT

We simply want to see as God sees. That’s the work of eternity.

Let’s get started already.

God is light and in him is no darkness a all. If we say we have

fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not

live according to the truth; but if we walk in the light, as he is in

the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of

Jesus cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we

deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our

sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse

us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we

make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

-1 John, 1:5-10

In God’s presence, consider . . .

Am I ready to walk entirely in the light?

Do I want that to be the way I live my life, every day, every hour,

every minute, every second?

Breathing in and out God’s Word, which is my life, which gives

me light?

Closing Prayer:

Make me your light, Lord, all yours.

CATECHISM CORNER: HOW TO EAT AN ELEPHANT

ONE BITE AT A TIME

Article 44 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

MAN is by nature and vocation a religious

being. Coming from God, going toward God,

man lives a fully human life if he freely lives by

his bond with God.

Reflection:

There’s a Zen-like irony to this: the only way to be fully human

during our time on earth is to commit our lives to an unseen God

who calls us to a reality beyond what we can know in our

present world.

Prayer.

Jesus, you promised that if we would seek first the kingdom of

heaven, every thing else would fall into place. Keep the promise

you have made to your servants and supply all of our needs.

CHURCH IS OPEN—NORMAL MASS SCHEDULE

For those who have concerns about attending weekend Mass at

this time:

“The obligation to attend Mass on Sunday is lifted until

further notice.” – Bishop John Noonan

If you have reservations about coming to church on the

weekends, think about coming to daily mass to be able to

receive the Blessed Sacrament.

ARE YOU SOMEONE OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO . . .

1. Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic?

2. Has a child over the age of seven who has not been

baptized?

3. Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the

Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist?

We offer an opportunity to learn more about our faith. Sessions

focus on the teachings and experience of Church and prepare

individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism,

Confirmation, and Eucharist during the Easter season. There are

separate sessions for children or youth. You are welcome to

participate in the process with your questions, your insights and

your faith story in a warm accepting setting. For information

please contact Anna-Marie Wright in the parish office.

MINUTE MEDITATION:

But the Lord is faithful; He it is who will strengthen and guard

you from the evil one.

-2 Thes 3:3

REFLECTION.

God’s faithfulness should be my comfort and my encouragement

when I feel weary and disheartened in performing my duties.

My Father never abandons me. He helps me according to the

measure of my faith.

PRAYER.

Faithful God, strengthen my faith. Make me willing and obedient

in fulfilling Your will, even when it is difficult for me.

WHY DID JOHN THE BAPTIST BAPTIZE?

Pat McCloskey, OFM

Q. During Advent we hear Gospel readings about John the

Baptist and his ministry. This month we celebrate Jesus'

Baptism by John. This, however, was not a Jewish practice,

was it? Why was John baptizing in the first place?

A. You cannot find the word baptism or any of its derivatives in

the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament). Baptism was not an

official part of Judaism as it reshaped itself during and after

the Exile in Babylon (most of the sixth century B.C.). Baptism

was, however, practiced unofficially by some Jewish people

in the century before and after Jesus' birth.

In this context, baptism was a sign of general repentance

and thus could be repeated (as altar calls can be among

Protestants). At Qumran on the west side of the Dead Sea,

the Jews known as Essenes practiced a baptism of

repentance during Jesus' lifetime. Some scholars think this

group may have influenced John's ministry.

Around the same time, ritual baths for purification became

more common among Jews in urban areas. These were

obviously not possible during the desert years under Moses.

If you go to the Jewish quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem

today, you can see houses with ritual baths dating back

almost 20 centuries.

Eventually, some confusion arose concerning the baptism

conferred by John the Baptist and the Sacrament of Baptism

given by Jesus' disciples. In Matthew 3:11, John describes

his baptism as being "with water" while Jesus' Baptism will

be "with the Holy Spirit and fire."

In Acts 8:14-17, the apostles in Jerusalem send Peter and

John to baptize some Samaritans who had been baptized "in

the name of the Lord Jesus" but had not yet been baptized

with the Holy Spirit.

Later we meet Apollos, a Jewish man instructed in the Way

of the Lord (Christianity) but who "knew only the baptism of

John" (Acts 18:25). Priscilla and Aquila explained to him the

Baptism that Jesus' disciples used. In Ephesus, Paul

rebaptized those who had received only the baptism of John

(Acts 19:1-5).

The relationship of John's baptism to Christian Baptism is

directly addressed in Matthew 3:11, Mark 1:8 and Luke 3:16.

OUT OF SILENCE COMES LIFE

Out of the silence of Mary’s womb, a baby emerged into a world

of human struggle. The infant, born in a stable in Bethlehem,

outgrew the manger in which he was laid and the swaddling

bands in which he was wrapped, as he would later leave the

tomb and throw off the wrappings of death. Jesus of Nazareth

grew up to challenge his world and ours with the promise of

everlasting love. With his hands, he offered a healing touch; with

his arms, he held and consoled; with his feet, he walked with his

friends and disciples. And after all was said and done he offered

his very body and blood. The Word was consumed in the

wordless eloquence of the cross and the silence of the empty

tomb. Out of that silence is raised a passionate belief in promise,

in covenant. When despair overwhelms us, when promises

suddenly seem empty, when it seems that we’re surrounded by

dashed dreams and disappointment, by love betrayed and

friendships faltering, we remember that we’ve staked our lives

on the belief that only through death is there life.

Out of the silence, we must go forth and proclaim the love of

God alive and dwelling in our midst. To this love we commit all

that we are and all that we can become. We follow Jesus of

Nazareth. We love as he loved. And so we are called to bring a

healing touch to those who hurt, to gather people into a loving

embrace, to cry out at the horrors of oppression and destruction,

to cherish the gifts of creation in all its varied forms.

We must become the word of love spoken by God in our hearts.

We must become the Good News made flesh for our world.

—from the book Simple Gifts: Daily Reflections for Advent

by Diane M. Houdek

https://www.franciscanmedia.org/minute-meditations/out-of-silence-comes-life

We must restore hope to the young people, help the old, be

open to the future, spread love. Be poor among the poor. We

need to include the excluded and preach peace.
