Southern Stars Dance 2018 – Iconic
Over the past 6 weeks, 28 Stage 3 students
have been busily preparing for Southern Stars
2018. We will be dancing in four items in this
year’s show – Iconic. The Show will celebrate
contributions made to the creative and
performing arts over the past few decades
and will recognise iconic moments in music,
dance, art, film and drama. Balgownie’s
Stage 3 dancers will celebrate Walt Disney in
their items “Chillin’ Like a Villain” and “Happily
Ever After: Part 2”. Keep an eye out for Cruella
de Vil and Captain Hook on the dance floor!
After weeks of rehearsals, Show Week is finally
here! Students will perform in four shows this
week:
Friday 31st August: Matinee show 10am,
Evening show 7.30pm
Saturday 1st September: Matinee show
2.30pm, Evening show 7.30pm
Students at our school would not be able to
participate in these events without the
continued support of our amazing P & C! The
P & C provided our Southern Stars dancers
with funding to assist with some of the costs
associated with Southern Stars. This included
paying for each students’ Show T-Shirt and the
cost of buses to and from our rehearsals. On
behalf of the Stage 3 teachers and Southern
Stars Dancers, I would like to say a huge
THANK YOU to our wonderful P & C for their
assistance this year and for their continued
support of Southern Stars and the performing
arts. We would not be able to give our

What Kids Learn From Fathers
(Grandfathers, uncles, family friends, coaches, older cousins and other
positive male role models) By Michael Grose
Kids learn important lessons from their dads. A
recent study conducted by Galaxy Research
found that three quarters of Australian dads
nominated their father as the person from
whom they learned their most important life
skills.
Shaving, riding bikes, driving and changing
tyres are the skills that men attributed to their
dads. At first glance these may not appear
too startling but dig a little deeper and you
find that they attribute vital lifelong success
characteristics to their dads. High work ethic,
honesty, supportiveness and loyalty were all
values that men directly attributed to their
dads. The results of the study show that dad is
the ‘doing’ guy.
Mothers tend to interact with their kids
differently. They are more verbal, more astute
at developing interpersonal skills and more
likely to reveal what is on their mind. The
language of fatherhood is about activity –
dads teach many of their important lessons
through activity. Learning to be a good sport,
to share and to work toward a goal are
lessons that dads teach their kids in very
hands-on ways.
The study also showed that it was through
activity that men formed their relationships
with their dads. Playing, tinkering, building
and pulling things apart are the modus
operandi of many dads.
What do dads teach girls?
Dads teach girls fundamental lessons about
interacting with males. As my girls were
growing up I wanted them to expect to be
treated well and respectfully by males (both
Term 3 Week 6 2018
Respect, Responsibility, Real Learning Relieving Principal: Sarah Steele PO Box 192 Fairy Meadow NSW 2519 P&C: www.balgowniepnc.com
present and future) as well as having the
confidence to be assertive.
Numerous studies have linked fathers with the
healthy development of girls, including self-
esteem and confidence.
Certainly dads should compliment their
daughters genuinely and persistently in
adolescence when body image doubts are
very common. But they also need to let their
daughters grow away.
This is a challenge as dads tend to be
protective of their daughters and hard on
their sons. It’s lucky then that most mums are
protective and super-supportive of their boys!
The yin and yang that mothering and
fathering provide is a fabulous balance for
kids.
Boys grow into their dads
Little boys want to be like their dads. They
attribute superman-like qualities to their
fathers. Dads need to make the most of this
while they can because their sons become
teenagers and try hard to reveal their feet of
clay. The GOOD NEWS is that the Galaxy
Survey showed that most men still want to be
‘like their dad.’ That boyhood dream doesn’t
diminish in adulthood. That’s lucky as most
men become like their fathers, hopefully
better versions!

Playground Update: I wish to inform you that we have had further
advice from our Assets Management Unit and
Health and Safety Directorate regarding the
fragments of non-friable asbestos found in our
back playground.
A ‘chicken pick’ was completed two
weekends ago and the site has now been
declared safe. A clearance certificate has
been issued by the hygienist. A further
management plan will be provided to the
Compliance Directorate. We will notify the
school community of any further updates as
we are advised.
Find your Treasure Book Week 2018
This year our annual children’s Book Week
celebration will be happening at our school in
Week 7 (3rd to 7th Sept). We hold our amazing
Book Week Parade every second year, and
while we will not be parading this year, we
have some great activities lined up for our
students to enjoy.
This year’s theme is Find Your Treasure! I love
this theme as it really helps us to impart to our
children that stories and books can be
treasures. All we need to do is know how to
find them. That is where I come in! As a
Teacher Librarian, my passion is about getting
our next generation hooked on reading.
It is books that are the key to the wide world;
if you can’t do anything else, read all that you
can. —Jane Hamilton

Treasure Hunt!
Jess lives by the
ocean. George lives
in the forest. One
morning they both
wake to find that something is missing –
something terribly important. It appears their
world may have changed ... and not for the
better! Despite their differences, George
and Jess realise they share a common need.
Together they set off on a quest to find the
treasure that has disappeared from their
homes. There are strange and challenging
obstacles to overcome but they discover that
help may be found in the most unexpected
places…
Find Your Treasure
Competition
This is voluntary, but lots of fun for those of you
who would like to get involved. Enter our Find
Your Treasure “Turn me into a Pirate”
competition. All you have to do is turn
something that is NOT a pirate (eg. a
pumpkin, a teddy bear, a potato, a toy, craft
materials, etc.) INTO a pirate. Remember, it
must be a pirate, not a treasure chest or a
pirate ship or anything else ‘piratey’. After
making your pirate model, fill out the entry
form available in the library with your name,
class and object’s pirate name (e.g. Captain
Boxbeard, or First-mate Pumpkinhead). Entries
will be displayed in the Library and will be
judged in Book Week by our three pirate
judges Ms. Steele, Mrs. Oyston and Mrs.
Thompson from the Office. Entries will be
judged on imagination, craftsmanship and
creativity. One winning entry will be chosen
from Kinder, Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3. All
winning entries will receive a $25.00 book
voucher. The entry date closes on Monday
3rd September. Good luck to all of our
creators.

Year 5 STEM Day Report
By Zoe Johnson and Emily Petrov From 5/6B
After going to Keira High School and
participating in many activities for STEM
(Science Technology Engineering
Mathematics) we had participated in the
events that were: meltdown madness,
catapult building, bionic hand, bridge
building and water turbines. One of the
activities was Meltdown Madness we had to
use an iPad to control a robot which had to
pick up different coloured batons. The red
batons we called the ‘critically injured’, the
yellow were the ‘severely injured’, the blue
were the ‘highly injured’ and the purple were
the ‘mildly injured’. The batons were worth
different amounts of points but if dropped,
they would subtract a certain amount of
points off your total. For the catapult building
we were given rubber bands, pieces of
masking tape, a piece of string, scissors, safety
glasses, wooden sticks and a wooden spoon.
We only had an hour to complete this
challenge and our main goal was to build a
catapult, put a wooden spoon on the
catapult and flick a ball into the target using
rubber bands as our ‘flying force’. For the
bionic hand we had to make a working hand
that you pull string and you can grab things
with. We had to use thick straws, string, tape,
gloves and scissors. We succeeded in that
activity as well as the bridge build. We had a
durable bridge that held weights of different
measurements. As for Bally we made it to the
weight of 93.8 grams. For the water turbines
we were provided with foam, tape, paddle
pop sticks and plastic sticks. The water was
poured down onto the turbine and it rotated
35 times and in that activity we came 3rd.
Overall we enjoyed the day thoroughly!!

Girls Touch Footy Knockout
On Thursday 16th August our Senior Girls
Touch Footy team played in Round 4 of the
PSSA Knockout competition. This was our first
game after 2 bye rounds and after receiving
a forfeit in Round 3. We played against
Corrimal East in windy conditions, but that

didn’t stop the BPS girls. We went into the half-
time break leading the game 4-1. After some
fancy footwork from a few of our players we
extended our lead in the second half by
another try. Corrimal East fought back with
another 2 tries in quick succession. Balgownie
girls were not disheartened and responded
by scoring another 3 tries. Balgownie won the
game 8-4. The girls showed great
sportsmanship and encouragement for their
peers. Well done girls! We play our next game
in Week 7 against Shell Cove Public School. \

KK Scarecrow Update
The male scarecrow has been in the cubby
house garden for a month. The students in KK
have been reflecting (Orange thinking cap)
about our scarecrow and we have realised
the following points:
In the afternoon toddlers enjoy looking at the
scarecrow and often do so by climbing up the
retaining wall.
There are still significant numbers of Balgownie
Public School students using the retaining wall
as access to the cubby house and
surrounding gardens.
Our scarecrow looks awesome in the garden.
Even though our scarecrow hasn’t solved the
problem of students and staff climbing the
retaining wall we think he looks great.
Over the next few weeks KK will be re-
planning and producing a different idea to
stop students, staff and toddlers climbing the
retaining wall.
Please watch this area for the next solution to
our problem.
